    33:27 I can’t speak for the community but my problem with the Arctic wolf is not the “found in captivity” argument. Otherwise people’s wouldn’t be asking for walrus and musk ox. It is the fact that just after the game came out with two bear subspecies both of which are from a cold climate, having a second cold climate wolf sub felt like a waste of space over something that is distinct such as Arctic fox or musk ox.

    • @OldCountry
      @OldCountry  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yea I remember some people saying that they didn't like the wolf because they wanted something else which never made too much sense to me. Not getting an animal doesn't make the animal we got instead any worse and they should each be looked at fairly, but to each their own. I also know this community has a vendetta against canines which I understand because that's just preferences

    When it comes to the European badger, there are some European zoos out there that has it in captivity such as Wildwood and New Forest wildlife park but even then, it isn't an animal that's usually found in captivity.

  • @marlin8631
    @marlin8631 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Ok, I‘m through the vid now, and I mostly agree with many placings here. Still, there are some points I disagree with, so let me list just a few of them:
    - The Alpine Ibex…. This is the only placement I actually actively despise, because as someone who has had SO many nice memories of visiting Alpine Ibex in my local wildlife park, I for one think it‘s perfect in almost every category. There could be a point made about the males being a bit too ‘vibrant’ in colour, but otherwise, they are portrayed masterfully accurate. High S-Tier for me.
    - This is for sure a matter of personal preference, but all of the habitat animals in the Europe Pack are easily top 10 for me. They really cover the most important parts of the continent imo and are also breathtakingly modelled.
    - My last point is a question, rather: Why do people who are focused on realism in their zoos only look at the current holdings in the respective area of their facility? Like, yeah, the European Badger is not common at all in real American Zoos, but that doesn’t mean that it is unrealistic for a zoo there to adopt one: They are suited to the northern climate of Canada/Northern USA, so them being adopted there is a fully realistic option. Now, there are of course exceptions to this 'rule': Animals like the Eurasian Lynx would be unlikely for your average zoo as there are easier-to-get and similar relatives of that species (Bobcats or Canadian Lynx), so an American zoo would tend to acquire the local fauna. Also, animals like the Proboscis Monkey have a very strict and hard-to-fulfil diet, so it would also be unrealistic to house them in this scenario. There are probably reasons for people only looking at current, actual holdings, but it just never really made sense to me and seemed like an unneeded restriction.

    • @OldCountry
      @OldCountry  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. Okay with the Alpine Ibex I knew I was going to get a decent amount of potential backlash with this one. My opinions on the animal still stand however. I have nothing against real life Alpine Ibex, if anything I would like to use them more but just in my personal opinion I think they could look so much better and it turns me away from them. It's just going to have to be a agree to disagree situation.
      2. This is another agree to disagree for me. I just tend to like the animals that I've built more personal connections with. Hence why I also have so many strong positive feelings towards animals in game from North America like the Prairie Dog and Cougar. I know the prairie dog isn't the most loved but it is a very accurate animal in game and a very personal favorite of mine due to real life encounters and experience. I am a little harsh on the Europe pack, I always have been but I just can't pretend to like it when I just don't. Sorry I know the Europe pack is loved by so many and I encourage you and others to love it even more!
      3. This is actually a very good question and I might do a video or podcast diving deeper into this topic because I think the answer might be different from person to person. All I can say is my take on it. When I set my sites on doing an American Zoo project (Texas State Zoo for example) I go in and do my research. I want to be as faithful as possible to the reality of it all. So I go and look at the zoos of (in this example Texas) and see what species they have in their zoos. I also take into account the architecture, theming and layouts. If you have been to the amount of zoos I have been to (33 AZA and 41 total with non AZA) you start to understand what is common in American Zoos, what's uncommon and what just never occurs. Why are there no AZA facilities with European badgers, or Eurasian Lynx? I think it comes down to the fact that we have counterparts in America that are well... more suited for our zoos. There are a lot of very similar animals in North America and Europe, and I think that's why European animals and European sections are extremely rare and well just not found in American Zoos. It's kinda also more hard to explain. It's like why would someone like one animal but then not like another? Usually the reason is, there is no reason, people just tend to like certain things because they just get that feeling inside that they like it. It's weird because I don't like the European badger but would go crazy over the American badger. I have that nostalgia and that connection with the American version that I don't have with the European version hence why I put it in C - meh. I just don't have any feelings for it positive or negative. Really the only thing that make it decent in my opinion is the model is okay. Otherwise on my criteria is hits pretty low. Personal Preference and Usability it gets almost 0 points for me (for reasons I've already explained) and behavior's it gets very low points as well. I feel like there is just a lot more they could have done with the animal. I guess you could say the same thing with the skunk which is fair but skunk hit low A for me because it rates well on my personal preference scale and usability. Hopefully I cleared some things up and hopefully this doesn't make you or anyone else like the Europe pack and animals any less. I knew there were going to be some things people disagreed with heavily but people really wanted this tier list and I needed to be fair and honest.

    Personally I would also put the hippos in need a rework column, there model is off- the jaw is inaccurate and so short and no way near as wide/big as hippo’s jaws can be, when they open their mouth you can just see that his jaw is so stubby and it doesn’t look menacing at all. They we’re made way too ‘fat’, short and stubby (yes I know hippos can be those things, but not as severe as planet zoo unless your talking about over-fed hippos) and behaviour is completely abnormal, the hippo will attack the Indian rhinoceros if in the same enclosure but nothing else which is strange. Meaning hippos can be mixed with a variety of animals such as giraffes, elephants and more which would not work in ordinary zoos due to their highly aggressive behaviour. There are many other inaccuracies which I haven't explained… hippo definitely doesn't deserve the good column.

    The situation with the siamang and lar gibbon isnt really that weird i think. People wanted a gibbon and didnt really care which one, so once the siamang got into the game the lar gibbon feels redundant for a lot of players.

    When it comes to which is more common in captivity between the capybara and the African penguin, the capybara is a lot more common in captivity than the African penguin.
    This is because the capybara isn't as interchangeable as the African penguin since the African penguin can be swapped with the Humboldt penguin while with the capybara, the only animal that's similar to it appearance, behaviour and welfare wise is the lesser capybara.

    The hate on the Arctic Wolf is for good reason. It should not be in the game at all to begin with. The timber wolf, going by the worldwide distribution on the range map, is essentially a gray wolf meaning it covers all the subspecies. The arctic wolf should have just been the albino color variant of the timber wolf. There was no need to waste an animal slot on it. We should have gotten the arctic fox in the Arctic DLC, opening up another slot in the North America DLC.

    Adult Komodo dragons don’t really climb in real life the young ones do so the adults don’t eat them. Also that’s why the people who live on Komodo build their homes off the ground. Steve Irwin tested this as a dragon went into food mode and Steve had to climb a tree to escape

      Interesting. Maybe in captivity komodo dragons tend to act differently? A lot of zoos (at least in America) build their komodo dragon habitats with plenty of ground space and verticality space. From the 33 AZA Zoo facilities I've been to I've seen quite a handful of adult komodo Dragons sit up quite high. But this is also due to the fact that they are Reptiles. And from working with herps and learning from some of the best herp keepers on the planet you tend to notice a trend, that most Reptiles, especially basking lizards tend to do whatever means necessary to get closer to a heat source as possible hence why even Reptiles that don't normally climb in the wild, (Komodo Dragons, Uromastyx, Leopard Geckos etc) will tend to be a bit more arboreal in captivity. From just the few Reptiles I own and have worked with I can safely say if you give them room to climb, they most likely will. People told me my whole life Ball Pythons aren't active and will stay in their hides most their life. Boy were they wrong lol mine love to climb her trees lol

      @Old Country I think you're both technically correct. From what I've learned adult komodos will climb but they don't do it much because they're bad at it. Something about their bone structure growing into an adult. Usually when they climb they have plenty of large ledges and branches incase they fall so they don't hurt themselves

      @@OldCountry true animal’s can act differently in the wild and in zoos as in Australia experts said the common brown never climbs. But there have been cases where common brown’s will climb especially into car engines
