  • We take a look inside an unusual piece of equipment, a Sony SRP-X700 Digital Powered Mixer. This is a device for routing video and audio in lecture theatres, halls and other places where you may have multiple source needing to be selected and displayed.

Good teardown again. The 70V output probably is a bridged configuration of the stereo outputs. That would explain the 70V (2* 35V) and the minimum impedance of 16 Ohms. Power is squared if voltage is doubled (P=U²/R), so the impedance has to be squared to keep the max power the same.

Probably is bridged like that for 70V.

Lots of good salvage parts in all that.

      Full of good stuff :-)

The unit does RGB, S-Video and CVBS switching but no conversions between them. It's fixed architecture audio DSP is its real neat secret but you can't access it without a pc via USB using the manager software. Speaker relays are for muting, 70 volt output mode is activated in the software. Out of the box it runs stereo, low impedance out. Being a device from the 90's it has the appearance of a familiar analogue audio device from the front panel but with a decent DSP running inside, the faders are not passing audio, audio levels can be controlled remotely via RS232 or a remote potentiometer if you use the DB25 connector.

Very interesting device. Was worth grabbing it for a teardown.

Interesting choice of a Class D amplifier but a conventional linear power supply.

It was interesting to see that.

ADSP-21065L Super Harvard Architecture Computer (SHARC) DSP Microcomputer. I've always heard that pronounced as Shark.
I wonder if those relays on the speaker output board are just for muting, and soft power-on/off, so that you don't get loud clunks in the speakers on power-on/off.

Probably for the muting. But maybe more sine it has resistors there too.

The X700's are next to indestructible. The only pain with them now is there are no USB drivers for Windows beyond Win7 when trying to configure it via the manager software.

It is annoying good hardware can't be used due to not supported software.
