They really lightened up Father Maxi from the early seasons where he was basically the stand in for the larger problems in the church. As they expanded South Park's world he became a positive depiction of the local Catholic churches at odds with the greater Catholic church.
As a catholic, although I have quite distanced myself from the church, the first time I saw this episode I was dying.
Safe to say that in my country, Malta, the Catholic Clergy were given complete immunity to civil law courts proceedings by the British, something which lasted until 1973. Not surprised that some child abuse back in those years only came to lights in the recent years 😂😂.
Catholicism is just a cult, they go against the bible at every turn and worship the pope who is a very clear false idol, they have even re written parts of the bible
if you want to be a Christian then be a Christian not one of the strange sub factions that are just cults, if Jesus walked into most modern churches he would burn it down and be even angrier than he was in the temple.
Don't let the pressure distance you too far. Remember, we live by the words and actions of Jesus Christ, not priests.

The spider has nothing to do with anything. 😂 But that's the whole point. Organized religion has a lot of arbitrary BS that subtracts from the teachings of the faith.
Edit: I really shouldn't have to explain this but apparently I do - No I am not saying organized religion is inherently bad, nor am I promoting atheism. If you wanna be an atheist that's fine, if you wanna follow an organized religion that's fine. The only argument I'm making is the one my words actually say - That most organized faiths contain some irrational rules and practices - what I called "arbitrary BS". That's IT. That's ALL I said. I didn't say any of these wild extremes y'all are taking it to.
The BS component of organized religions actually serves a rational purpose. I saw a neat analysis of it in a book on game theory. The idea is that being a member of an organized religion usually does provide benefits. Churches usually organize social activities for their members and provide aid in times of need. If you have a business fellow church members often will favor your business over businesses of people who aren't in the same church.
Those benefits may attract people to join who aren't actually interested in the faith. (The game theory book had a drawing of a man holding a hamburger at a church picnic, with a thought balloon that said "I'll pretend to believe in Jesus for a free hamburger!"). To counter that what you can do is have some annoying things that church members have to deal with.
For the real believers, the ones who believe that unless they keep to the faith they are going to end damned to an eternity of torture their perceived reward is worth nearly anything. They will put up with onerous rituals or annoying dietary restrictions or restrictions on the social life that the people who are just there for a free hamburger will not.

Father Maxi is morally grey. On the plus side, he's against child molestation. But he's still a fear-mongering bully who sees nothing wrong with using fear of hell as motivation to keep people in his religion.
He is morally good. In nearly every episode that features him, he is on the right side of things. It is just that he is flawed and does some grey things.

I'm not sure about how you join the Catholic church, but my family left the faith because of their abuse. They rejoined under a non-affiliated Church when I was in my early teens and the preacher didn't want me to feel pressured and leave later, so he gave me a bible and some recommendations of sections to read and to come back in two weeks after I'd decided.

IIRC It used to be okay for priest to marry. But hundreds of years ago the pope changed things, mostly because back then nobles would donate money and property to the church to try to buy there way into heaven and he wanted priests to not have kids that could inherit all that instead of it going to the church.
Fun thing is that there's a bit of a loophole. Eastern Byzantine Catholic priests are allowed to be married, and if they transfer over to being a Roman Catholic priest, then their marriage is still recognized by the church.

4:50 I absolutely agree on that. I grew up in the Methodist church & I never wanted to go every Sunday growing up but I did it bc I didn’t have a choice with my parents making me go. I finally stopped going (making the decision myself) shortly after my 21st birthday. My parents, especially my mom, were not happy with my decision bc they thought I was happy being there & I wasn’t & I always hated vacation Bible school. When I made the decision to stop going I got tired of that kind of life & seeing the same group of people every Sunday. And my mom had the nerve to say “After all these people have done for you…” but the way I felt about that was that I never asked for help from anyone there, that was always my mom asking them to help me out. I appreciated the help & stuff but I didn’t want to be a part of that anymore. Now that I’ve stopped going to church I’ve never been happier to have some freedom
Well the issue is not church, it’s that you were forced to go and didn’t feel a connection to god. Hopefully later in life you will reconnect to the lord.

Why do I feel like the entire episode was built around the Martha Stewart segment?
I grew up in a very Christian household and not the nice one. When I came out, my grandma, who was a preacher, tried to perform exercises on me. A lot of trauma came from it, I have kids of my own, and they are free to make their own religious choices. The only thing I do is steer them to being kind. love, and accept everyone for who they are and not use Christianity or the Bible as a way to throw hate.
