Crab People is a inside joke from the writers. Every time they don't really know how to resolve a plotline someone might suggest "let's just do crab people".
One of the reasons why I love this episode is the first scene. It just comes out of nowhere. Even when you know the name of the episode you're just not ready for that. Kyle represents the audience, walking into the situation with no idea what the fuck is going on.
Haven't seen anyone say it yet, Matt and Trey struggled to figure out how to wrap this episode up and used "crab people" as a placeholder idea, ultimately just going with it lol
To add to it, Matt and Trey said if they had no idea how to end an episode, they’d use Crab People because they thought it was too crazy to fit into any plot naturally. This is why they also mentioned Crab People in the news episode when the kids were trying to figure out what to make a story about.
Crab People is an inside joke because in the episode "Quest for Ratings" Cartman suggests a story on "crab people" during a brainstorm session. Believe it or not Crab People is actually from Ancient Japanese Mythology. Believed to have been the corrupted souls of reincarnated naval warriors. It would not surprise me if Tray Parker knows this because he is a huge fan of Japanese culture and history.
@@citypopradioFM Well, I wasn't suggesting that is where it came from, just that it was mentioned there. It most likely originated from Tray's Japanese obsession.

7:00 as out there as it is for the boys to use the f-slur to describe themselves in this scene, it’s very common in the gay community for some to refer to themselves like that. It’s like how for years how those of us in the black community reclaimed the n-word from being used a slur to our ancestors, to a word some use all the time in conversation within our community in place of our names. If you’re a person of color, you’ve probably said the n-word just goofing around in normal conversation with your peers. It’s basically the same thing in the gay community. This isn’t to say that every gay person likes being referred to this way, just that it’s a way some make due after being insulted or demeaned for generations for their orientation and identities.
Boy, you are reading waaaay to much into it and miss the joke. The joke is that they turned a 180, something they and most people during that time used as a light hearted insult is now their personality. I feel like you look through a very modern lens at this. Everybody understands what you explained, but back then it was an insult to people who arent even gay. It's just suppossed to trigger people, like he said "Fighting words"
When the dying crab popped out at 19:45, it kinda gave me Men In Black vibes where Will Smith activated the switch that opened Rosenburg’s cranium to find the dying Arquilian telling them about the galaxy on his cat’s collar. Also, that “Owen Wilson” corpse next to the dying crab guy definitely looked creepy enough to be a human disguise. 😱
I jive with Kyle most out of the boys, and this is a good example of why--he follows his heart, even when it's against the grain. Sometimes, that takes him to nasty places (and Cartman knows it, which is part of how Cartman can so easily rope him into his schemes, despite Kyle being The Smart One). But in times like this, it takes Kyle down a zig-zagging path toward fixing things, and one can't help but root for that.
