पारंपारिक आकाश कंदील | Traditional Akash Kandil
Aakash Kandil or the Sky Lantern is similar to the hot air balloons. In the month of November, when it is the Diwali season, enthusiasts from Konkan's Kalmath village come together to fly these Hot air balloons in the night sky.
These huge but delicate lanterns are made up of kite paper. These papers are stuck around a stick, shaped in a circle which forms the base of the lantern.
To make a lantern, around 10 to 15 dozens of kite papers are required, depending upon the size of the lantern to be made. Also to stick them together, half a KG of puppy gum is used. It takes around 3-5 hours to make a lantern by 5 people.
This video shows the process of how the balloons are filled with hot air and launched into the night sky.
