Robby Robinson gives his review of the 2022 Mr. Olympia... and he seems to be an extremely tough critic.
We are just over a week away from the 2022 Mr. Olympia - and after some holiday gatherings we are starting to get more hindsight on the event. With a much hyped Men's Open lineup, some shocking finishes, and even more shocking upsets - many were calling this year one of the best Mr. Olympia competitions in quite a long time. But don't count Robby Robinson as part of that group. In fact, he has some extremely tough criticism for nearly all of the competitors who stepped on stage this year. Not to disrespect them but because he holds the Olympia up to such a high standard. In our latest episode of the Generation Iron Podcast, Robby Robinson explains why he thinks 2022 was the worst Mr. Olympia yet.

I completely agree with Robby about the machines. They have their place but the iron should always be your foundation. Free weights are just going to build harder denser muscle. I don't even compete plus I'm all natural and have a better Christmas tree 🎄 than most pros so I completely understand his point of view.

He was always one of my favorite bodybuilders from the 80s era.. his a gentlemen to ,I spoke to him on the phone a few times.. gave me some good advice

Robby is amazing person whom I admire! You ask him a question he doesn't always sugar cote the answer, with Robby he will tell you what you need to hear instead of what you want to hear. Either way he only leads with the truth. No sugar coating his answer.......What a legend still competing for his love of doing so at 76! While most are in a rocking chair!
He's correct, Arnold was a different breed. Coleman, stepped it way up. Gotta handle that iron according to the best. Great interview.

Posing definitely is a workout in its own and improves size and shape...
The thing that stood out that I agree with him on is Brandon Curry would improve a lot in muscle quality if he stuck to free weights like Ronnie with only some cables for back. Brandon has awesome shape and would be a beast like Flex Wheeler with harder quality training. He has so much more potential.
While this is true, too much free weights all the time you’re at a higher risk for injury, Ronnie Coleman is a perfect example for this

He's not being a harsh critic, he's looking at the stage and seeing guys with access to better everything compared to back in the day and the bodies look worse. Someone has to come back to reality and stop blowing smoke up their asses... Only the top two guys looked truly conditioned.
He didn't look at any stage loool, he has no fcking clue who was on it..
Robby made some good points ,but don't think he understands classic and its weight class . CBUM wasn't flat he was probably top two over all in that show for being on point ready and professional .And Derek and Nick were pretty great.

I have to agree from the start to the finish, too many athletes, too many women's classes, i live in the UK and it was waaaay too late for me. and i think that showed in the Mens open with them being a bit off in their condition.
People praise and listen to Robby like he won Multiple Mr. Olympia's. Robby had/has a great physique, but he will always knock the modern day bodybuilder's. If you think Robby Robinson and bodybuilders of his era took critiques of their physiques differently, you're fooling yourself. Vince Taylor is 66 years old.

The Black Prince throwing some HATE. He complimented Brandon Curry but said Chris Bumstead didn’t impress him. He said Bumstead looked better at the Arnold. Did Bumstead even do the Arnold? No. Robbie lost all kinds of credibility in this interview. I don’t even think Robbie watched.

And this whole idea that machines don’t build muscle is nonsense. Chris also uses a lot of free weights. He did not watch the Olympia. Dude just talking. How do you say you watch the Olympia and not even know who the competitors are. Robby one of those guys that thinks only about bodybuilding in the past. That’s why he only knows the names of the older guys. He doesn’t follow bodybuilding as much as he’s pretending he does.

Robby’s right, these guys just don’t look as good and timeless like the guys back in the day. Bumstead looks too freaky and his posing is not good. His back pose looks too stiff, etc.
Robby Robinson, you are a legend and I admired you growing up. A word of advice. Next time before you do a bodybuilding interview, educate yourself on the current bodybuilders. Watch the 2022 Olympia and educate yourself on the 2nd place winner Derek Lunsford. Finally educate yourself on Classic Physique Olympia champion Chris Bumstead. Chris never did the Arnold Classic.
I thought he should e won an Olympia in his prime. But in the 70s was mostly Arnold and the. Zane! Only flaw perhaps smaller calves but that is genetic. But he more than makes up with amazing quads and upper body

I'd like to see the weight restrictions lifted 30lbs for classic division and make it just the one show.. no open class mass monster insulin and growth hormone monsters any more.. bloated guts etc..

I’m sorry to say, but Robbie’s knowledge on new school bodybuilding is very poor. He barely knew who the competitors were. He compared himself most to Brandon Curry, yet he was arguably off the most, and then he goes on about how machines are for lazy people, and machines are built a lot different than they were in the 70s and 80s. bodybuilders back then retired earlier, with the exception of Robbie, who is a genetic freak. Bodybuilders nowadays need the longevity, if they did all free weights, there’s too much risk for injury.

Arnold stopped competing seriously in 1975. Robby was just starting to win in 1975.
While I agree the quality of the mr Olympia as a whole could be better, better conditioning over extra size imo-most of what Robbie said misses the mark in my opinion. He talked like he didn't watch the show at all and doesn't know most of the competitors. It was all negative. And his critique for a lot of guys is they need to get bigger??!! Like what, Nick walker needs to get bigger!! He is big enough in my eyes, being more shredded would be the better way to go. Bigger isn't always better.
