this was recorded Feb 1987 on The River Boat President in New Orleans during Mardis Gras. It was part of MTV's first broadcasting of the Mardis Gras......I was in the front row...lol..... the concert lasted well over 6 hours and was an amazing night....
To everyone who thinks SRV was just flash and speed, just listen to how tasteful his solos are here. They fit the song so well it's hard to imagine another solo in place of them. Such an ear for melody and an amazing internal rhythm. We miss you brother.
I saw the Fabulous Thunderbirds years ago and they were so good , I've loved their music for years and they are Really good with Jimmie Vaughan on Guitar , and add Stevie Ray you have something special .
Stevie Ray Vaughan is the greatest guitar player I've ever seen in my life. You should have seen Stevie Jimmy Kim Wilson T-Birds Bonnie Raitt Jeff Healey and Buddy Guy, that was one hell of a show!
Stiff competition- best. I wouldn't be dubious if I hadn't been right up next to SkyDog Duane Allman at this dinky little festival they weren't even billed at. Sly Stone and Family turned up as a surprise too.
Junior Brown..and Reese are giving me rhythem and sound along with Kim Wilson ..Jimmie And Stevie Vaughan got them strats wound up and going over the airwaves..This is Entertainment.
Jimmie was always a less is more player. He was a master of finding the note you didn't play. Stevie was on the other end of that spectrum. Something special was in the water at Martha's house. Lol
My older brother and I are both guitarists. We've both been playing since we were little kids. He started first. I used to sit in our room and watch him practice. I was 9 and he was 15, and already good enough to play in a garage band. I guess he could tell I wanted to learn because one day when I was watching him he said " Hey little bro, you want to be a guitar player, don't you?" I said yeah. All he said was "Right on, man! Right on! Then he got up and left. (Hey, it was 1971. Dude's talked like that LOL). A couple hours later he came back with a '65 Gibson Melody Maker and handed it to me. I said "Wow! You're going to let me use it?" He said "No! I'm not letting you use it, I'm letting you have it!". So, thanks to big brother I was able to start learning at 9 years old. We both went on to play in local bands and did gigs around our state. Unfortunately, to this day we've never played in the same band together. Its on my bucket list. I sometimes wonder if Stevie Ray and Jimmy have a similar story from their childhood.
I met The Thunderbirds years ago and Kim Wilson was very nice and down to earth , it's still one of my favorite cd's to listen to . Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to Everyone .
Remembered seeing Roomful of Blues with the Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Mabrey near Ocean Beach in New London, Connecticut. They each alternated sets and played all night! Incredible music...Both bands jammed at the end of the night!
Yeah, I remember this! It was on MTV from Mardi Gras some time in the late 80s! I had this on video and watched it all the time. Nice to have it again! Thanks.
Who the Hell can hate on Jimmie's playing here? That solo was a perfect example of how economy and tone, note choice and the space in between the notes can make for a far better solo than a 'watch me shred' guitargasm that was SO prevalent at the time this was taped (1987: think 'hair metal').
Plenty of room for blues purists & hair-metal shredders to co-exist in the broad church of music. Progressive rock has been around almost as long as electric blues now - both valid forms of music.
Spot on assesment.. I think this is a perfect example where Jimmy really watched what he played and made it super interesting because SRV was there in the wings. Interesting how Stevie seemed to tone his work down a little, because in this instance it wasnt all about him.
thanks so much for posting this- theres no such thing as getting enough of srv or the T-birds...had the privilege of seeing srv and the Tbirds on different occasions in toronto and germany- lucky old me.
Remember hearing a neighbor playing Ray Charles and the Raelettes "What I Say" dozens of times a day. Ray Charles and the Raeletts created some great timeless music back in the day. Now widely imitated around the world.
Man one of my biggest regrets in life is I had a chance to go see Stevie Ray Vaughan and I turned it down. I said "I'll catch him next time" and it wasn't that long after he got killed. I've regretted that ever since.
I saw SRV play with the Thunderbirds at the Medgar Evers festival and he lit it up! I also saw him at Griffith Park in LA shortly before he died and BB King opened for him & they both lit it up. His last album where he celebrated his recovery from drugs and alcohol had great depth and soul.
so sad. anyone can do that Fing song. but YOU have stevie ray in there and OMG. you have EVERYTHING. lots of music is traditional..............hello. hope you were happy that you got to experience the greatest guitar player in history.
I've known Jimmy Vaughan my whole life, he is the nicest guy. Him and his two little girls are a s sweet as can be. The comment about his skill is not even worth me saying anything about.
Saw SRV's first Colorado show back in 1982 ... back when music was real, people actually wrote, sang and played their songs. Greats are still around, but you don't hear them on radio - gotta luv the web, baby!
You didn't hear them on the radio back THEN, either. Why can't we just appreciate good music without backhand passive-aggressive and undeserved shots at current artists? You DO realize there are TONS of GREAT bands and artists today who don't use auto-tune and are brilliantly talented.... and also that the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's was not all solid gold... In fact, the vast majority of stuff on the radio was CRAP... and whenever you forget it, just remember that Disco Duck was a NUMBER ONE HIT!!
this is 1987, its on the Cruise Ship "River Boat President" for Mardi Gras!! Awesome show , i think one of Stevie's best shows / tone!! You all have to see the SRV and Double Trouble performance on this night.
This is great!!! I have never seen Kim Wilson with hair before. His bald look works for him. Thanks for sharing this piece of history with us. SRV is still the man!!!!
Get his butt kicked if he did. I lived where the Texas musicians came for fishing, legendary jams in the dive bars. They always had the younger/older brother vibe.
Is nobody going to comment on the fact that Kim came in too early? The keyboard player was starting to play the song the way ray Charles did it, but had to abort abruptly cuz Kim started singing. Unless I’m mistaken, of course.nice to see these guys are human after all!
@ayotte61 Sad to hear about Keith! I worked for the Boathouse venue in Norfolk in the 80's and always remember him chewing away the whole show. Rest peacefully Keith and SR!
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas and half a pack of cigarettes; it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. The Vaughans. The real life Blues Brothers.
Whooo. Thank you. Well Jimmy's got a good almost angry guitar but Stevie - It's not at first. He has to warm up. But then his fingers and his pick give way and his wings take over. Never seen anybody else play a guitar with his wings. wow. I saw him live once, with Bonnie Raitt. I didn't know what happened, then, but now I think he took flight and I went along ...
the guitar wizards are on the stage in one session,i'll bet jimmie was glad he got to pull this off with his brother and now he can remember it always,TBIRDS ROCK HARD
this was recorded Feb 1987 on The River Boat President in New Orleans during Mardis Gras. It was part of MTV's first broadcasting of the Mardis Gras......I was in the front row...lol..... the concert lasted well over 6 hours and was an amazing night....
I hope you can feel the petty jelousy in my note!
Priceless!!
the Brothers Vaughn doin what they do best. Rock the house, baby.
very cool ID logo. yeah, this a great tune to jam on.
Here here!!
Always a treat to see Stevie Ray and Jimmie performing together.
To everyone who thinks SRV was just flash and speed, just listen to how tasteful his solos are here. They fit the song so well it's hard to imagine another solo in place of them. Such an ear for melody and an amazing internal rhythm. We miss you brother.
This singer is the only person out of place here...
Kim Wilson is the consummate entertainer. And one of the best harmonica players around. He was definitely not out of place.
He had finesse.
David bromberg
Stevie just flash and speed?!
Saw the Fab TBirds and Steve Ray & Double Trouble play a double bill at Festival Hall, Melbourne 1987. An unforgetable night.
R.I.P. Stevie Ray.
Man I miss Stevie Ray Vaughan,,,
Jimmie sounds straight out of the late 50's early 60's. Great phrasing and vibrato. Dude is deep.
#realdeal
He was a heck of a harp player also.
Love the entertainment..wow..Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan..sensational guitar players..Kim Wilson a legend and terrific singer..
Steven Ray may be the greatest blues guitar player ever. Miss this great talent.
You obviously haven't listened to a lot of blues.
@Marty R prepare yourself for the 'my favourite guitarist is better than your favourite guitarist ' comments
I saw the Fabulous Thunderbirds years ago and they were so good , I've loved their music for years and they are Really good with Jimmie Vaughan on Guitar , and add Stevie Ray you have something special .
Saw Jimmy and Stevie in San Diego at Sea World Pavilion in 1988. If you weren't there.... you missed it.
The king of cool ole Jimmie Vaughan, the thunderbirds where great back then.
Stevie is the best of. all time
this is one of those songs that never ever ends
Stevie Ray Vaughan is the greatest guitar player I've ever seen in my life. You should have seen Stevie Jimmy Kim Wilson T-Birds Bonnie Raitt Jeff Healey and Buddy Guy, that was one hell of a show!

Damn! That would've been a show for the ages!
S.R.V. can't get enough of his guitar. ❤❤❤
Junior Brown..and Reese are giving me rhythem and sound along with Kim Wilson ..Jimmie And Stevie Vaughan got them strats wound up and going over the airwaves..This is Entertainment.
Man, that was kick-ass! I miss those old R&B jams. And with that lineup, what a party that must have been!
Stevie defers to his brother and plays in the Dallas less-is-more style, very much like Jimmie, in his first solo.Very cool thing to do.
Jimmie was always a less is more player. He was a master of finding the note you didn't play. Stevie was on the other end of that spectrum. Something special was in the water at Martha's house. Lol
Jimmie safe stevie

Raised to be gentlemen. Saw the same deference with the Winters Brothers.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee||es|||||e
I saw them with Stevie Ray and Robert Cray at the Wiltern Theatre in 1984... it was surreal... one of the best live shows I have ever seen...
thank you God for sharing Stevie Ray Vaughn with us. Love you Stevie
SRV was and is the best blues cat! Soul, heart, sweat, moves, fast fingers! Interesting, exciting! The more I watch him, the more I love him!!!
Jimmie and Stevie are like red wine and white wine, complementing each other.
and Kim Wilson is underrated af.
Good to see those Ole Vaughn boys from Oak Cliff, Texas together!
To see these two brothers with such immense talent ........
Stevie Ray Vaughn RIP. When we lost Stevie a big portion of Texas rhythm and blues and precise guitar playing went along with him.
Don't say that in Austin
I met The Thunderbirds years ago and Kim Wilson was very nice and down to earth , it's still one of my favorite cd's to listen to . Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to Everyone .

Jimmy Vaughn is all so a outstanding guitar player. So much great music.
*Jimmie
Absolutely phenomenal..Legends on stage and rhythem is fantasic..band is terrific
Really really good, like put your whole heart and soul into it. Great clip, spreading the love.
Reese Wynans on keyboards is simply amazing. He played for SRV and Colin James.
And now Joe Bonamassa.
he is so great!
Whoa. I thought I was the only one who knew who Colin James was.
He’s also played with Tab Benoit back in the 90s
Always loved this band, and kim just has that classic rock-n-roll voice,we have lost this i want it back!!!!!!
Love it!. You gotta love the 80's clothes. I sure did!
Who the Hell can hate on Jimmie's playing here? That solo was a perfect example of how economy and tone, note choice and the space in between the notes can make for a far better solo than a 'watch me shred' guitargasm that was SO prevalent at the time this was taped (1987: think 'hair metal').
+jjstratford +1. Jimmie's tone is really clean here and it cuts through..............
Plenty of room for blues purists & hair-metal shredders to co-exist in the broad church of music. Progressive rock has been around almost as long as electric blues now - both valid forms of music.
his best
Spot on assesment..

Interesting how Stevie seemed to tone his work down a little, because in this instance it wasnt all about him.
Wow the two Vaughan brothers.
Saw the T-Birds 4 times here in Norway. They always delivered the goods.
Great to see the brothers together! And that organ solo was dynamite! Can't forget Kim's voice - it fits the song!
Just saw this for the first time. This is HOT thanks for posting!!!
Stevie Ray Vaughan, priceless.
thanks so much for posting this- theres no such thing as getting enough of srv or the T-birds...had the privilege of seeing srv and the Tbirds on different occasions in toronto and germany- lucky old me.
Everyone knows that the Vaughns are legends but dont forget Kim Wilson is a great stage showman and he loves what he does.
FB thunderbirds were great but Stevie was Awesone❤️❤️ Miss him sooooomuch!!
This is the Riverboat Jam from New Orleans, about 1987. SRV , the Thunderbirds, Mason Ruffner, the Radiators. Great show!
Gotta Love Kim. He get's the job done. Thaks for posting.
The electric piano player is Junior Brantley from Milw. WI. he had a should group around town in the early to late 60's...really great.
Kim Wilson looking quite Andy Kaufman-esque back in the day, but he could still tear it up.!!!!!
Happy Birthday Stevie
Good Night SRV RIP!
Doesn't get a whole lot better than this!!
Hell!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!What I Say sounds Fabulous 🖤💙
Hot Damn! This is Smokin!!!!
I tell you, Jimmy Vaughan is also amazing guitarist. Knows how to put the right note there

Best ever..Teacher and the Student....
Pretty good,
My favorite person there is SRV
You need to listen more carefully to Jimmie, then...
Sensational..thank you

This is something very rare to see Stevie Ray and one nice rock banda The Fabulous Thunderbirds=
Nikolay Lachev Not rare at all! They often played together here in Austin.
They did this a lot in Austin in the 80s. Glad I was there.
I saw Jimmy do an interview. He never spoke badly about Stevie, which is awesome 👍😎.
Get his butt kicked if he did. I lived where the Texas musicians came for fishing, legendary jams in the dive bars. They always had the younger/older brother vibe.
SRV and the Thunderbirds
