For the guys who are new to the trade. The unit had a small amount of refrigerant in it before he added the nitrogen. Before he opened his manifold it was at 45psi standing pressure. The nitrogen will help force the refrigerant out to pick up with your leak detector

Your title says: "Don't Buy", don't buy a Rheem/Rudd or a package system? In my area, Rheem/Rudds are very good systems. Also we almost only have packages. Miss leading title. As for your video, it would be helpful if you state how low it was. Keep it legal.
The lowest quote we got to replace our 19 year old 3.5 ton 12 SEER RTU Tempstar is for a Rheem 3.5 ton 14 SEER package heat pump. The next best price is on Day and Night and Ruud (Rheem) package units. Rheem and Ruud package units are the most commonly found around here in this part of AZ. We’re leaning towards Rheem because parts are readily available here and a couple of friends recommended the contractor. Our heat pump didn’t have any Freon left and would have cost $800 to install some kind of stop leak and R22 with no guarantee it would work, so we’re going to have it replaced.

So far I’m truly enjoying the challenge of learning the business side of the trade. It is definitely a lot different than just being a tech. You ott clarify for the new techs that the unit in the video was out of refrigerant and it is not okay to mix nitrogen with a system that still has some of its charge left, only a trace amount is to be added with the nitrogen.
A tech should always have the conversation before adding nitrogen to a system. As reclaiming or venting would be needed after adding nitrogen. First miss. Leak check good and not stopping after first find is great. I would hate to have one of my techs jump to nitro and not have the conversation before.
Per the EPA it is acceptable to install a small amount of refrigerant with nitrogen fill for leak detection purposes using a very sensitive sniffer device. Many leaks won't actually leak until they're under the high operating pressure, which is why the N2 is needed to fully pressurize the small quantity of refrigerant.
Don't buy Rheem is a little whiny, isnt it? Trane has had major issues with leaks and so has just about every other brand out there. The new ones use bohn coils, are those junk too? Are ADP coils impervious to leaks? I'm genuinely curious what your thoughts are.
As I guy who installs Day & Night I’m just gonna say that ADP coils definitely leak 😂 also my all time favorite units are the early to mid 2000s Rheem units. Simple and bulletproof. Sadly a lot of them are going the wayside due to age, but they’re still solid the ones that do run!
@@miniman9198 I prefer heatcraft for refrigeration as well, but I've also set Russell, which is a Rheem brand. No issues with either, but heatcraft still edges out Russell for me. My business is a Rheem Pro Partner, so I'm probably biased. However, I could (and would) set something better if I felt like there was a better manufacturer. I have yet to have a warranty claim denied and they always take great care of my issues...for the most part. I still think most of them could build a bulletproof unit and sell it for what it's worth, but instead engineer a unit designed to last 12 years. Just my opinion.
I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but I have a difficult time trying to find leaks… I normally bump the pressure up with nitro to the design pressure on the low side and sniff with my leak detector (field piece slr8) I’ve used it a hand full of times and had not much luck. Seems like it’s very sensitive at times or gives false dings. Any advice would be appreciated.

What would qualify as extremely low on refrigerant? I’m just getting into leak detection now. I use to always just top it off. I like the bumping it up with nitrogen idea. I had trouble finding a leak with light wind the other day.
I like to look at standing pressures when system is off and everything is equalized if it's under 5 degrees outdoor ambient in saturation temp on your gauge you typically will have less than half total install charge

If the pressures look just a little low, you'd be best to recover, but with the low side at -2.4psi it was a safe bet there wasn't much charge left. I'd have still made sure it wasn't a closed txv first, but he may have had some history on the unit and knew it was losing charge from the start.
Hey Zac, great video as always! I have a question about the install process. When you pressure test with nitrogen does it matter what direction the nitrogen gets pumped through? Same with the vacuuming process. What line do you pump from? Lastly does a TXV or piston affect the pressure test or vacuuming in any way? For example is it possible for a TXV to close and prevent nitrogen/vacuum from reaching both sides of the system?
I wouldn’t think it would make a difference, it’s usually easier to fill from your service ports at the condenser. In rough in situations I cap the inside and install my own shraders outside to pressure test. When you vacuum you can use a single hose setup or a dual hose setup.
I always fill nitro the way the refrigerant flows, then when emptying I go out the suction. Then when I open the system I open suction first then liquid

From my personal experience in hvac, yes it is possible for a txv to close off and prevent you from pulling a true vacuum. If you pull a vacuum and add refrigerant, you will now have noncondensibles in your system making. I have had quite a few txv metering devices cause premature compressor burnouts. If the compressor is already bad, then I can't test the txv by my refrigerant pressures. Instead, I blow nitrogen through the liquid line, and if it flows freely, than my txv is not locked shut. I am aware that this does not always let me know if I have a bad txv, but it does let me know if it is stuck closed. Another way to know you have a txv that is locked closed is if you are pulling a vacuum and the micron guage keeps jumping all over the place. If your micron guage is jumping all over, than you either have a restriction in the metering device, oil with moisture in it, oil sitting in your hose or evap coil, or a leak. You may also have a restricted filter drier. Regardless, always replace the filter drier for assurance.
Did I miss the part where you discussed avoiding this type of HVAC system? You discovered a leaky system, and replaced the unit. Is it worth it to lose viewers to hang a clickbait title on your vid? I won't be back.

Now you have to pull the charge and bill the customer for more (by weight) than you would have originally and you've got a useless mixed charge to deal with... Not criticizing, but that seems like a pain in the ass to me. Now, I've only ever worked commercial so I might be full of crap.. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Residential is not for me, but I like watching the vids..

At 2:00 when he first connected the hose, the refrigerant pressure was negative, basically flat.

As long as there’s a little trace of refrigerant it’ll be able to sniff it out

Did you mix the nitrogen with the 410A?
I've actually heard from HVAC school it's ok to mix R22 to find it faster. Once you're sweeping the system after the test anyway.

Ok.....Im confused. Did you dump nitrogen in w/ what was left on the system, or did you recover? Would what you recover be any good anyway because i assume youll suck outside air thru the leak hole...but i know the rest of the charge is gonna be worthless if you dump nitrogen in with it...🤯
The low side pressure with the compressor running was -2.4psi. I doubt there was much there to recover.
