It's hard to stop a trane. Even harder to get the parts to get them going again ! Love these outfits generously giving us fixed times for warranty repairs when we use up their allotted time JUST getting our tools across these it center and (what's left of the) mall roofs.
I used to service a mall that had rubber tension roof with small ass gangways to walk on. Kicker is, since it was rubber, mall wouldn't let u carry your tools across it, not even in ur pockets. Everything had to helicopter craned to you. Don't matter if u was just changing a capacitor. Heli crane had to come in lol. Shit was nuts.
Not to hard to stop a trane, I do agree with it being hard to get parts to get them back online, it's gotten worse and worse over the years and now it's just a shame and unexceptable

I'm late to the channel. I recently made the jump to commercial after 20 years of residential. slowly learning Intellipak and Voyager systems. I asked company for training. They bragged about being big on training. I haven't seen it though.
1:04 wow 😨. what a minute. you should press stop 🛑 first. I don't know how many ton that unit is, but the breaker panel could explode in your face depending on if the system is fully loaded. I recommend pressing stop 🛑 on larger systems like that.

Great job. I also recommend changing the prop as well I have seen over the past 30 years the fan blade rivets go later causing that new motors bearings to fail. For the extra cost of a blade it’s well worth it plus you won’t have to worry if you bent the old prop while removing.

I always change the fan blade with the motor. There's a reason that motor seized up and a lot of the time it's from an off balanced blade. Plus sometimes those blades don't want to come off and you end up bending them while using a puller
We always replace the blade as well.....its cheap insurance and the customers will always go for it...haven't had one yet who wouldn't. These are expensive pieces of equipment...customers don't want breakdowns....they don't mind spending a few hundo more for a blade too. Had lots of issues with Trane motors....had 2 bad out of the box condenser motors from Trane for intellipaks last year in a row. Plus the counter guys aren't that great and seem to always screw things up.

Great video. Honestly though, I would not have replaced the contactor unless there were signs of wear like arcing or heat damage. From the video, it looked like those contacts were as good as new with no other signs of wear or damage. Changing a perfectly good part like that is just a waste of materials, time, and the customers money.
One thing to remember is for large commercial units, downtime is way more costly than installing a contactor. I’m not a fan of the shotgun method usually (replacing all suspect parts), but can see why he did it in this case. He brought the parts up and not much cost to replace while he was there. It wasn’t HVAC, but in my field engineer days, often travel time (high cost) was a huge influence on whether or not to replace available parts.
Brother You forgot the rain shield on the new motor, sometimes they come with them sometimes they don't Shaft up orientation you need the black small plastic rain shield without it motor will fail prematurely
Great video! I’ve worked on maybe 10 different intellipak units in my last 9 years in the field. I’ve never worked on one that the test mode actually turned anything on! Or that the knobs you tighten to close the access panels didn’t have the threaded inserts just spinning in the sheet metal! Also really like the foil tape on top of the hub trick. My journeyman taught me to use Tin-Man In A Can paste
I'm not a pro, but more of a DIYer. Just eye-balling these commercial units tells me the quality is several notch above the residential units. Seems to me they are also easier to work with. No crawl space, attics or obstacles hindering access to the unit.

I always get a new rain shield when I'm going to do this on a rooftop unit. The old motor had a small one, but I install one that gives me assurance that the upper bearing does not get rain or snow on it. Otherwise, good job.

Been doing hvac for almost 30yrs now..trust me, u nvr stop learning in this trade. Just when u think you know it all the technology changes. I once read an article on Google. They asked 32 professional tradesmen what are the 10 hardest trades to master. #1 was an electrician #2 was hvac.
Good job Zack but my experience I would replace the fan blade to you never know the fan blade can be out of balance and took that motor out. My experience I did a condenser fan motor one time I went back couple days later on a call back the fan blade had broken off. I did inspect the fan blade and everything’s fine. I think what happened in the fan blade was out of balance, just my experience.
I live next to the coast in Southern Ca. Always order blade also . 50% of the time getting it apart becomes an issue. Cheap $70 insurance to have one on hand. Less than an hour labor usually

Just had an a/c replaced due to not cooling great, definitely still blowing cool air though. It’s R-22 though so recharging with new stuff isn’t allowed. The unit was 42 years old and had to be replaced with something that if lucky it will last 15.
I always show up to a condenser fan motor change with a new blade. If the old blade is in good shape I will save it for emergency repairs. I just see so many blades on older units unwilling to come off the shaft OR have micro cracks in them. I've also seen a handful of blades that cracked and went straight into the condenser. I will admit in your case that blade does look to be in descent shape. I have also made the mistake of putting my puller on the blade hub and accidentally hitting the set screw holes. At that point, it's game over and time for a new blade. Had to learn all these things via experience.
I’ve got a 10 to condenser with a restricted filter dryer. Should I replace all the refrigerant with new refrigerant or pump it down and replace the dryer outside the condenser?
What does amping the legs do at the end of the motor installation? about 12:30. Just making sure the fans not over or under drawing? Also how would you know what numbers are acceptable.
in a res. home app. as 4 power safeings is it better to run individual units to clod your house or large 4/5 ton mini split unit out side . single use 2/2.5 kw of power is larger better to cold house to save power

You should do a better explanation regarding the initial complaint of the customer and I initial thoughts to the potential resolution , also when you mentioned swapping the motor &!contactor is it typical to change out both if you have an issue with either ? Thanks
Is there a separate board controlling each of the variable speed motors? They each just came right off the contactor it looked like. I assume troubleshooting that would be more complicated? I don't work on a lot of Trane, as you can probably tell, so I really did appreciate the video. Thanks!
Your an EXCELLENT HVAC TECH. You are the guy I want coming to my place of business to service my equipment. Your attention to detail from start to finish shows you have pride in what you do. You want the best outcome for the customer. If you are new to any service business this is the guy you want to pattern yourself by!
Lets talk about other good things to do and not saying what you did was bad at all no sir ! Good stuff !! When a hp occur and you need a motor, should cover the hole of the fan shrout with cardboard or something to prevent other hp trip and getting cooling. Didnt talk about that drip plug that can be usefull to know when you change a condenser fan motor. They have to be on top and not at the bottom. Condensation make inside drop by gravity Also, should get a big picture of everything before getting good to go… filters may be clogged up or 1 on 2 straps maybe broken on that monster blower…. But good job bro always good to see

They can make higher quality if that’s what the customer wants. It’s the companies that are choosing to take that option. Some places offer a $500 paint job option for your car. It’s not bad bc of them, you picked the low quality option.
Trane motors are significantly more expensive for the sticker change and maybe a plug change. I would have disconnected my failed motor before restart too
Why replace the contactor? If you had proper voltage going to the fan then its most definitely the motor having issues. and after seeing how locked up it was that was definitely the problem.

Never shut a commercial unit down like that. You always stop the unit at the control level. Then disconnect the main breaker.
Wonder how many duct heaters or fpbs locked out on high limit. Charging the customer for all those shots and skimped on a blade on a locked up motor.

Unnecessary expense. If you clean the shaft and put some oil on it you should be able to slide it off no problem.

Moisture will get in and sit under the foil tape.
I like coating the shaft/hub with an anti seize or even good rust spray paint

I like to apply never seize on the shaft and blade before tightening the set screw. Good video..

The biggest issues I have with rooftop unit, are heat exchangers going bad. (I’m just glad we don’t do large unit like that one.)

The #1 failure with all current HVAC is the manufacturers that make them. Their quality doesn’t match equipment made even 40 years ago.

option by cutting corners due to less regulation and offering low pay to workers instead of prioritizing quality. They can make higher quality if that’s what the customer wants.
It’s the companies that are choosing to take that option.
Some places offer a $500 paint job option for your car. It’s not bad bc of them, you picked the low quality option.
Trane motors are significantly more expensive for the sticker change and maybe a plug change. I would have disconnected my failed motor before restart too
So where was this tape on the fan blade hub on the failed motor? If there was tape on it from the factory than how did it become so rusted up?
Why change the contact ? I thought it tested ok ?

Why replace the contactor? If you had proper voltage going to the fan then its most definitely the motor having issues. and after seeing how locked up it was that was definitely the problem.
