To help the victims, this is a local organization that I saw out there helping in the mountains: You can donate here to Samaratin's Purse: www.samaritanspurse.org
I made this video to raise awareness & donations for the local organizations. I will be donating the proceeds of this video to the local organizations. I chose not show the 200+ vehicles I searched in the rivers downstream of towns or the locals I spoke with, so the video had a lot of driving & may come across as just driving around, but it is important to me to show for the above reasons.
I drove 2,000 miles across the country to attend an event in Virginia and visit my family in the North Carolina/Tennessee/Georgia tri-state area - I grew up in these Appalachian mountains and spent half my life here paddling the whitewater rivers in these hills, it was devastating to see so many mountain towns and communities destroyed.
Because of road damage and lack of access, I was not able to meet up with a rescue/recon group that I was trying to help. Afterwards I was not able to get to an area where I was trying to search for someone that had been swept away in their house into a canyon I used to kayak that I knew well. I began searching rivers downstream of towns for vehicles that potentially needed recovery missions. Finally I ran across a bridge I didn't know was out trying to get to my father's house in the mountains. I was very glad to have not found anyone in the vehicles I searched.
Hurricane Helene has absolutely destroyed the Western North Carolina (and Eastern Tennessee) communities. Towns are obliterated, homes gone, people & pets missing, and the communities are in need of help in all manners. There are a lot of areas that are difficult to get into (that are in need of help) and access is for locals only in many areas, primarily because of the road damage.
If you'd like to help in person, contact one of the local volunteer and charity agencies (such as Samaratin's Purse) for more information and to show up in person to help. From what I saw, donations to small local community relief organizations are recommended over larger organizations. Thank you for your support everyone and stay strong!
Weather is supposed to start cooling off this week, so they are in need of jackets/propane/fuel/sleeping bags/headlamps and supplies to get locals through the cold weather to come.

Don't say anything against people who are "not doing anything " or "just going about their daily lives ". Etc. Being there after a disaster is super dangerous etc and not easy. Many ppl are helping in their own way or not and that's ok. Do YOUR thing.

Went to Hendersonville few days after the hurricane hit. Drove in from Moore County, NC. Drove my pickup with bottled water. Drove 40 and 26. All I saw was civilian vehicles pickup trucks, some pulling trailers all of us loaded with various supplies. On the start Harris Teeter paid half. Gets better as we are loading up the cases of bottle water a young lady came over said to my wife are you going to the mountains? Wife said yes. Then she asked if she could pay for gas. Kinda told her we was full. But then she said I’m paying for the water. Was amazing. We didn’t ask. We have some outstanding people here still. Bless those people, especially the young woman that gave from the heart. We still have a lot of good people and thank you all.

Thanks for showing this, as a Katrina survivor, I understand how important it is to get the word out. The United Cajun Navy was taking horses and mules up into the mountains there, trying to get help to people. How do you get shelter to those people, when you can’t get equipment up the road, and it’s getting cold. It’s hard for people to understand, if they haven’t been through something like this. Thanks for helping get the word out. It’s more important than ever.

Who the hell are you and what have you specifically done to help our area? I’m simply asking. I’m from this area (born, raised, and currently reside) and this storm destroyed everything and if it were not for our own communities helping one another, there’d have been little to no help, but if you’re so concerned about and full of bright ideas, you have what 12,000 subscribers? Why don’t you donate a week’s worth of revenue to Samaritan’s Purse or to one of the local churches along Swannanoa River, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, or Black Mountain? First off, thank you for showing your subscribers the severe damage done to this area. Unknown to many, we had several days of torrential rain that weakened the soil and filled the banks of creeks and rivers in the days before Helene hit therefore causing a double whammy. We live in Polk County, NC and it was one of the worst hit counties in NC, but this damage also went into SC, TN and VA.
The greatest blessing of all of this is the community of people that live in these mountains and still treat others like family. Luckily for us, while we were without power for 8 days, we survived mostly intact. Samaritan's Purse is a wonderful organization that thank you for mentioning them specifically. We will survive and we will prosper once again because these people are Mountain Strong.

Hey Timmy, I live about an hour away from Asheville just across the line in Upstate SC. We had some serious damage in our area too, but compared to what is happening in Western NC we are doing great. I’m 47 years old and have never seen anything close to this storm. God bless you for going to help. I’m absolutely heartbroken for the people who are suffering from this. The devastation is unfathomable. Town literally gone. Roads washed away. So many people missing. Interstate 40 will be closed for possibly 2 years. Almost everything has to be rebuilt. It is the saddest thing I have ever seen.

I will say this....generally speaking. There were immediate responses from neighboring counties and states to NC and TN. Some of these areas were just so difficult to get to that it took time. I can't imagine what those people stuck in those areas felt like. I'm assume they felt abandoned, but they weren't. It just took time to get to them. So don't downplay how hard efforts have been to help. And if you hear that aid is being turned down, get the full story first. It might not be what you think. I saw an interview with a rescue worker near Chimney Rock where aid had to be turned away. It wasn't because they didn't want/need it. They got a huge influx of aid from neighboring counties and didn't have a way to store the excess. So they told them to take it to the next town that needed it. I think she said it best when she said they needed help in waves.....periodic supply drops so they don't get overwhelmed with supplies they can't store.
I'm in East Tennessee. In Unicoi County, they had to start shutting down roads to keep the gawkers from jamming up the roads and making recovery efforts more difficult. In the heat of the flooding, we had rescuers die trying to help. There are many stories of pure tragedy and heroism.
I see very ignorant and heartless comments downplaying how massive and destructive the flooding was. Such as oh, you should be prepared for a 100 year flood....😮. We lost bridges...dams... roads... ENTIRE towns. Our infrastructure was not meant to hold up to this type of flooding, BECAUSE these were unprecedented amounts of water dumped on NC and TN. For a lot of these communities, the alert to evacuate was sent out after cell towers went out of service, so they didn't even know what was coming down on them. Most people aren't even researching before popping off at the mouth. The info is out there. Google how much water was dropped on NC and TN.
The conspiracy theories about aid and FEMA have gotten so bad. Don't go off what your brother's cousin told you he saw on Facebook. Look for reputable sources of info.

Helene and other storms dumped a whopping 40 trillion gallons of rain on the South, NOAA says
Experts say Helene and other storms dumped enough rain on the Southeast last week to fill 60 million Olympic swimming pools.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - As Hurricane Helene cleanup continues, we're now learning just how much rain fell in the Southeast last week.
Helene's rainfall totals are stunning experts with an unheard of amount of water. Let's connect the dots.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says more than 40 trillion gallons of rain fell in the past week, including the preceding rainfall event in the North Carolina mountains. That's enough to fill 60 million Olympic swimming pools.

This is simply shocking. I live in the piedmont of NC just beyond the mountains and I am familiar with most of WNC. It will takes years just to get the roads restored. It will require significant engineering in places where river courses changed. Many of these areas were served by marginal roads to begin with. Lots of hairpin turns that a school bus could barely negotiate. Some folks are gone and may never be missed or found. Mountain folk in some areas are out there because they want to be off grid and left alone. Hopefully, most of them were able to at least get up above the sudden flooding. Kudos to THL for even venturing down some of those roads.
I want to go up and see how bad it is but that would be selfish unless I took supplies to bring relief and got out of the way asap. They don't need any unnecessary traffic or folks to add a burden to limited supplies. Thanks again to THL for taking these vids and posting them. It is eye opening.

Timmy is truly such a selfless person. Going all the way down there to help! I think it would be great if he would donate all the money he makes on this video to help people in North Carolina. It was such a bummer watching him drive by donation locations and not help but maybe it was because he was en route to a better place to go help. I’m hoping he’s made some money off this video so he can help the communities affected by this storm.

Thank you and everyone else for coming so far from home to help out and those that are helping out in general. This is the exact reason why outside people are being turned away from helping. You end up just putting more stress on an already broken down system. Never self report to help unless you have a contact from the area and have a specific mission. Unfortunately that's the way it has to be done. Otherwise there would be mass chaos.
