    My friend and I did the Trans-Sib 2 years ago from Moscow to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, and it was probably the most memorable trip I've ever taken. We broke up the trip in Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk and Ulan Ude. We did 1st class (2 berth cabin) because we didn't want to risk sharing a berth with strange men. What several people told us is that if you're a woman travelling solo and don't want to spend the $$$ for 1st class, then plastkartny is usually safer than 2nd class because the sleeping area is open (no doors) and always in plain view of the provodnik/nitsa, so it's much harder for anyone to get away with taking advantage of other people.

    I would land in Khabarovsk every 2 weeks to refuel while working for an Air Cargo outfit.
    Never had the chance to get out and explore but, watching your video brings me back great memories.
    Safe trip.

    first view...first like...first comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!...last year I went to Russia for the World Cup....I traveled by train (3rd class) Moscow-Sochi (Adler) then Sochi-Volgograd and lastly Volgograd-Moscow...all those trips were very long journeys....and they were also very interesting....on 3rd class you really get a chance to mingle with real Russian people

    So happy you had an amazing start to your Trans-Siberian journey! I'm in absolute awe with the Russian railway stations- some of the best architecture I've seen! It's so cool to see Japanese vending machines in Khabarovsk- what a small world we live in :)

    I have not followed your journey for the last 2 months as I have been in the thick of my own travels. Currently in Malaysia. But my 15 days in Russia was so memorable. I loved it and would love to repeat the experience one day. Maybe even stay longer and work there - such as teaching English. I also had a train journey. On the bullet train (Sapsan) from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Simply awesome. Thought I left the booking too late and there was no vacancy for the date I needed except for Business Class. So it was far more expensive than I had planned. But worth it.

    Thanks for sharing these interesting videos of your trip across Siberia. They remind me of my own trans-Siberian journey many years ago, when I unfortunately didn't have a camera -- so I have no pictures to remember the trip. I traveled from Luxembourg to Moscow by train in October 1979 (during Brezhnev's time -- USSR), spent one night at the Leningrad hotel there, then took the trans-Siberian all the way to Khabarovsk, where all foreigners had to get off because the train continued directly to Vladivostok, which was a closed city in those days (no foreigners allowed -- Soviet Pacific Fleet HQ). So I spent one night and half a day in Khabarovsk, and then took another train to Nakhodka east of Vladivostok, and from there I took a Soviet passenger ship to Yokohama in Japan. I spent 11 days in a row traveling on trains that time. I still have the stub of my ticket from Moscow to Khabarovsk and a few other souvenirs, but no pictures.

    I don't know how people watching your videos would not want to visit Russia and see the things you're seeing and do the things you're doing. I smiled when you sampled new food and drink and were pleasantly surprised. That was my experience here, too. If you manage to visit the Northern Caucasus Mountain area near southern Stavropol Region not too far from the border with Ukraine, you'll be amazed at the food they serve. There are so many different ethnic communities, all with their own unique cuisine.

    Люблю поезда дальнего следования: едешь быстро, но при этом долго. Никуда не торопишься, но никогда не опоздаешь. И можно с чистой совестью отоспаться, начитаться, отъесться и встретить интересных людей, Хотя, как повезет, могут попасться соседи, громко храпящие во сне. :)

    Can always go eat at the Canteens for a cost effective meal. Schwarma is also a cheap eat. Gritchka = Buckwheat. For those that haven't eaten it, it's pretty bland and tasteless which is why it's just not popular in the states. Usually you mix some meat sauce of sorts (or whatever you have available) to give it a flavor. 15 yrs in Russia and I still don't eat it. However, it is healthy and contains that all important fiber for your "big deals"! My longest train ride was Moscow to near Crimea region (sea of Azov). 3 days/2 nights. The worst thing is if the air-con in your wagon doesn't work. Can get quite hot as you can't open the windows in your cabin! Only the ones in the common corridor can you open on the newer wagons. Another thing is when sharing a cabin with people not of your party. When you buy a ticket, you are assigned a bunk. Now, I'm not sure if there's a written rule on this, however, if your bunk is on the top, sometimes the person below you may demand you move to the top even if it's mid day! Now the unwritten rule is that you only have to go to your bunk when it's time for sleep at night. But you will get the occasional 50yr old woman who will demand you move to your assigned bunk. I figure it's because she grew up in Soviet times, and she paid money for "Her Bunk" and she's got all rights to it. Gives her kind of power in a sense.

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol yeah that annoys me when people hog the bottom bunk the whole day. It’s like fine I get you bought it for the majority of the day but where are the people sleeping in the top supposed to eat?

    There are so many hidden gems and places that tourists miss. Following the same paths they see half as much and spend twice as much. Therefore, all the vlogs about Moscow are like corn on the cob and why should you do it again?

    Thanks for bringing us along this trip! The places you visited I bet they're amazing in person.
    Congrats on no dislikes on the video lol.
    Got a question. Way back in high school I had a Russian friend and she told us so much stories about Russia and stuff (most shocking was things about the Chechen people) but long story short, is it really safe for Asians to visit Russia? She showed me videos of skinheads and I was shocked the things they'll do. But I guess they're not after the tourists? It's just people like the migrants from the south that they're attacking?

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'm pretty surprised there's no dislikes! lol
      As for the country being safe for Asians, I would say yes. I don't know if you saw my Vladivostok vlogs but the city is literally the mecca of tourists from Japan/Korea/China. Irkutsk was also very popular with Chinese and I assume Moscow/St Petersburg are popular too. Overall I don't think too many people are outwardly discriminating, but of course there's going to be the odd ones here and there. I'd say you'd be quite safe and welcome.

    • @bj3040
      @bj3040 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general Russia is safer than big cities of Europe and north America, you won't see a lot of homelessness and drug users there. Be aware of alcoholics at night, you might be harassed robbed or beaten up. There are thieves and scams at tourists spots, but less than Paris, Rome.... Corrupted cops might extort foreign tourists, from asian countries in particular. Don't take seriously about the rudeness, that's the way when they interact with stangers. Be patient with inefficiency and don't expect a random person speaks in English with you.
      Have a nice journey.

    Oh goodness! Finally somebody is paying a proper respect to what such a vast country as Russia has to offer to a tourist and inversting TWO MONTHS of their time into the trip! Not just rushing through the whole county in 10-14 days! Definitely subscribing!

      I totally feel the same! I put off doing this trip until I could make some concrete time to do it justice. Thank you for noticing :)

    9:11 LOL, You just started a Far Eastern civil war here, considering feud between the two, and the fact Khabarovsk is still bigger than Vladivostok, and until recently held more important political status.

      It's much better than Vladivostok for sure. Shame about the stuff that happened recently.

    Хм, хорошая идея - попросить открыть вино в магазине... Но боюсь, это только к иностранцам снисходят. А Хабаровск хорош! И думаю, что Алина ещё не всё увидела.

    20:20 The display is fairly missleading. I stumble upon this every time I plan a trip in Russia. In Coupe the prices highly vary between upper and bottom bunk - which . At the end the bottom bunk in Coupe is somewhere in the middle between Platscart and SV.

    I am glad for you Alina. It is not easy for a woman to embark on a long travel alone. How much does it cost in total?

    Thank you for the video, I smiled. I knew that all tourists are invited to the Russian restaurant. Our embankment, along which you walked and ate ice cream, has recently been completely repaired, everything has become new. I'm glad you enjoyed the ice cream. I myself buy Japanese coffee and drinks :) I have a Japanese right-hand drive car that goes always and everywhere :) I am sorry to see your video just now. One could show you a larger Khabarovsk, the historical part of the city. It would not be difficult for me at all. But I don't know English spoken at all. I can only read a little :) We still have an excellent Ukrainian restaurant, they cook deliciously there.

      My visa expires November 4th so most likely leaving Russia a few days before making the whole journey about 2 1/2 months!

    Алина, Хабаровск не меньше Владивостока. Он крупнее (на несколько тысяч жителей) и старше - на пару лет.

      Да, когда Хабаровский край был в пределах России, Владивостокский угол на карте, был под Манджюрией.
