- Franz Waxman's score for the 1962 movie "Taras Bulba" featured this exhilarating "Ride of the Cossacks" in which Taras Bulba, played by Yul Brynner, and his fellow cossacks gallop to Dubno. It was splendidly played by the fabulous hand-picked John Wilson Orchestra as an encore at the 2013 "Hollywood Rhapsody" Proms Concert in London's Royal Albert Hall, to an ecstatic audience of 6,000 prommers.

The gathering of the horsemen in the 'Ride to Dubno' is one of the greatest scenes in movie history and this music score is a classic.
Herrmann called this, "the score of a lifetime."
The scene was an homage to John Wayne's Stage Coach.

We all know the Cossack's were fearsome warriors and this music could be the soundtrack to one of they're greatest battles!

Fabulous scene from the film. No CGI etc back then, all real horses with real riders. The music together with the thunder of all the horses was an outstanding feature of the film

One of our greatest orchestras. John Wilson's movie music concerts are incredible. This and his arrangement of Casablanca are his best in my opinion.
Along with their amazing "Tom and Jerry" suite featuring dustbins, dishes and assorted household items.

You can find anything you want on TH-cam, including the greatest movie score of all time. Long live Taras Bulba, and Franz Waxman. This movie and it's music made my Pop doubly proud to be a Russian from the Steppes. I am more proud than ever to be his son, even 12 years after his passing. He taught me everything I ever needed to know.

The best score of any movie, ever made for the big screen. The Ride to Dubno will be remembered by me and my deceased Pop forever, after we saw it in 1963 together. My Pop was a Cossack descendant. And he enjoyed that legacy. He always wanted to ride with Taras Bulba.
May this wonderful theme live in the Ukrainian people today.

Maybe it's just me, but I keep seeing myself on a 2022 Honda Gold Wing, with this music track playing on the bike's speakers!
It takes eight months for John Wilson to put his 'Prom' concerts together. Much of the music he chooses is lost and has to be transcribed from ear to paper again! His orchestra is hand-picked and there were nine orchestral leaders from various other ochestras in this 90-piece symphony orchestra.
There were actually 108 Players in this concert and the 9 Leaders mentioned were just in the First Violins, there were others playing in the Seconds.

A virtuoso orchestra in full flight under its visionary conductor playing one of the great Waxman film themes.

Taras Bulba. In the scene where this piece is being played, the Cossacks scream "Zaporoztsi" as each new group of Cossacks joins the main group. If you've never seen the film, I highly recommend it.

this is AWESOME! I have seen Taras Bulba j about 50-100 times just to see the "Ride To Dubno" sequence. Pretty crappy movie overall, but the music is so great...

At 1:21, what are the three instruments playing within the French Horns. I'm sure I've seen them in European orchestra (not British ones) but wonder what they are. Is the sound/range really different from French Horns?
They're usually known as Wagner Tubas, combining elements of French horns and trombones, but are not often used. Still, it is interesting that Waxman decided to use them in this piece.

There are 2 of them with beards. The 2nd desk player is Greg Lawson who is Principle 2nd Violin with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and on the 3rd desk is Bradley Creswick who is Leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia

@@CDB8939 _ Thank you so much. I play - and was not too bad when young but nobody this good is unknown ~~~ !!! If you know him just tell him he is much admired. I studied with Broiles, Jim Maxwell, Bobby McCoy and Clark Terry - I know a great player like Profesor Lovatt when I hear them !
@@theimp5901 I have met him a few times, he is a wonderful person and alway has time to chat. He has a CD out just recently called "56 degrees North" . You can also search him out on google and TH-cam. Believe me you will have heard his trumpet on many of the film soundtrack recordings he has played on.

Not all of the scores have been lost as alleged by Mr Hebbron. The Waxman scores exist in their original form and may be hired by professional orchestras.
He didn't allege that all the scores had been lost, just some of them, and not this one.

I've seen most of the 50s/60s epics, but not this one.
Reminds me of Shostakovitch.
What I wouldn't give to see the score to this piece. I tried contacting the Waxman music hire reps, and they couldn't have been less helpful in my pursuit; just said 'no'.

The movie itself is pretty crappy and does no favor to Nikolai Gogol´s great novel. But this horse scene music is absolutely great.
