The Hollywood of old. Perhaps gone forever. They once knew how to instill a sense of nobility in the human experience. They understood it. Kudos to John Wilson for knowing how to pick it out in his music selections.
It is not gone, my dear friend at heart, it is still there...temporarily suppressed and waiting to revive. Today's trash culture is not helping mankind and, hence, we have so many depressed and miserable people in the world but when they hear great music such as that composed by dear Steiner and more contemporary composers such as Williams that magic starts to shine again...to give them that sense of wonder that you and I knew when we were children watching the images...light captured by grains of silver halide...and sounds recorded magnetically....transporting us to other times and worlds. When Hollywood reawakens from its sleep of trash culture then, perhaps, the greatness will revive once more and truly great composers will create wonder for us on the screen again. I live for that day and I hope you do too.

These comments were so upifting to me. I came of age in the 70's; I did my best to embrace the music and films of the time. There was much to enjoy and appreciate, but this old soul found a "better fit" with the films of yesteryear. Would set my alarm to awaken me in the middle of the night to watch old movies like "The Heiress," "It Happened One Night," and of course, "Casablanca." As Frank Capra said, "I make films that perhaps don't show who we are, but who we could be."

I'm 80, Roy. The war was raging in my early childhood. My parents returned from the theater raving about this incredible film. I've watched it a hundred times since and it's never failed to hit the spot.

I have never heard the entire score to this classic film performed by a contemporary orchestra. What a treat! The legendary Max Steiner, conducted by the powerfully emotional baton of John Wilson... a tough combination to beat.

"As Time Goes By" was a popular song that predated the movie ... perfect for the flashback scenes to use a real song from the earlier era. Of course, the song would never have gained immortality without the picture.
Casablanca is a "return-to" film for me. Several times a year, I'm drawn to watch it. The musical show-down between French patriots and Nazi occupiers never fails to assure me that the Allies and the Resistance will win the war.

My god whoever composed this is trying to kill us halfway through with the overload of strings piercing ur heart so heard that u want to die on the spot in a puddle of tears and dopamine. Harmonically brilliant.
Funnily enough, Casablanca was just another run-of-the-mill movie designed to get bums on seats in local cinemas. It only became a cult hit much later. And iconic much later still. My favourites in the film are Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. The world (of cinema) hasn't been the same without them. Anyway, they sure don't make 'em like they used to.
William MacKenzie , that’s true. It was just another movie made in the movie machine in Hollywood. A lot of movies were made that way and in time as you say, became classic. Key largo also, another simple movie with a good plot and now has a great following. Many ate like that now. Just simply were good written movies.
@@Michaelbos I asked my late mother about Casablanca some years ago about the film. She did not recall it being a big hit at the time. Not like Gone With The Wind in the 1930s; or Mrs Minniver let's say. It in fact did not run that long in the cinemas in Sydney; where she lived during the war. So she missed it. It was only years later and especially when screened on late night TV in the US that it became a cult hit.
It certainly couldn't have hurt it any as it won the 1942 Oscars® for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay.
Sidney's career was *way* too short.
Perfect intonation in those strings and for a live performance, that is a very big deal! JW is at the top of his game when it comes to these movie suites!

This s GLORIOUS, but dare I ask when we shall hear Mr. Wilson's transcription of Bernard Herrmann's exquisitely beautiful score for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - one of the loveliest background scores ever written? It would make wonderful orchestral suite. Mr. Hermann's haunting, evocative music MAKES the movie the poignnt, memorably lovely thing it is.

I expect John Wilson put the score together himself from audio recordings?
@@williamgardiner2010 I researched it and turns out, Steiner's original hollywood score can be found online completely preserved in his original handwriting. Such acts of preservation are rare!

I should note that the great Hugo Friedhofer, who received an Oscar® for his original score for "The Best Years of Our Lives", orchestrated Max Steiner's score for "Casablanca."

No,"Johnb," it wasn't. As much as my favorite Hollywood composer IS Bernard Herrmann, he did not score The Best Years of Our Lives. It was, indeed, Hugo Friedhofer.

As the story goes the way I read it, Sam Goldwyn wanted Alfred Newman to score "The Best Years of Our Lives," but Newman was too busy not only scoring at Fox, but runnning Fox's musical department. However, Friedhofer had joined Fox after "Casablanca," because Newman was giving him chances to write scores ("Lifeboat," for instances). So, Newman begged off scoring TBYOOL, but he suggested Friedhofer. If you listen to that score, listen for the homage to Aaron Copland in some of the music. Friedhofer said it was intentional.
Steiner's score was orchestrated by the great Hugo Friedhofer, who in 1947 won an Oscar® for his magnificent music for "The Best Years of Our Lives".

The intro is so familiar-- siting in a darkened movie theater with a bag of popcorn waiting for the start of the double feature to begin.. That isn't now, when few remember double features allowing kids to spend an afternoon entranced by the films. Listening to these tracks, memories come flooding back of the films they were part of.
Fondest memory double feature 633 squadron & seventh voyage of Sinbad Cinderella theatre, Detroit. Me and my friends weren't allowed in balcony cause older brother and his buds were with girls...hahaha. I'll guess 1964. Maybe.
Mine is a bit earlier, but the "balcony" was where teen age girls met boys, and made out as we once called it.

I first saw CASABLANCA (that i remember) after a long and exhausting battle over my draft status, at the darkest point in the Vietnam War. I'd been to Canada, and was encouraged by friends to 'go underground'. It was no answer and I knew it----besides, I was in love with a girl back here. I returned, to face whatever was to come----Max Steiner's superb score brings that all back.

One of my favorite film scores, as all great scores it can live its one live despite the years, decades...especially I like as The Marseillaise is incorporated into the score, it sounds so naturally here
This is brilliant. The score fot the flashback montage. Some of Steiner's finest composition, married with this more-than-ca[able orchestra. Sumptious beyond description.

A bit old fashioned but wonderfully sentimental to the music of the 1930 and 1940s, but I love it. The musicians play so well, and are very talented. I bet they enjoy playing this great music out of the past.

As long as the music falls on new ears, it will never be regarded as old fashioned. It will actually sound novel because its different from what the average listener is exposed to.
So what if its old-fashioned? Why is that a negative? The orchestration and harmonies are incredibly well written, it makes your heart soar. No modern music that I have heard comes close to the feeling this gives you.

+joy reeve I must agree. I've been priveleged to hear many of the finest in the world, but this group of musicians rises far above the rest. John Wilson has selected a perfect blend pf tone and talent, and under his baton unheard of magic is brought forth.
There are 13 major Orchestra Leaders (Concertmasters) playing in the violins here, Many of the others are section Principals in their Orchestras. Plus at least a dozen Professors
Great performance by the orchestra. This video is also a good way to introduce kids to how an orchestra functions, the various instruments etc.
Casablanca was cinematic perfection. One of John F.Kennedy's favorite films.

I just listened to this suite and I just love it! It reunites all that is best in classical music: piano (romance), flute (mystery/ calm), harp (calm, delicacy, ) , violin (hope), percussion (order, reverence, victory), and many others instruments whose names I don't know... That suite is marvelous. :)

Love hearing this 'live' and I like Wilson especially his Tallis Fantasia with the Phil players and other 'live' stuff, but since the 70s the RCA series with Gerhardt is my gold standard, no disrespect intended. Keep up the inspiring work, like Beecham and his orchestra.

This film was one of the routine Warner productions designed to keep bums on seats during the war years. The film marked Bogart's transition from bad guy to hero -- and he pulls it off very well. In addition there are those wonderful "bad guys" Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Not to mention the luminous Ingrid Bergman. It only became "iconic" long after the war. It must rank as one of the most most romantic films of all time. Although I'm still mystified about what Ilsa (Ingrid) saw in Rick (Bogart). Vive l'amour!

Max Steiner wasn't particularly fond of "As Time Goes By" but you would never know it from the brilliant way he adapted it.

Beautifully done. My only complaint is that for whatever reason, the song "Perfidia" that played during the classic dance sequence with Bogie and Ingrid is missing. DAMN! That's one of the most beloved moments in the film. I thought maybe it was because the song was not one of Max Steiner's own compositions, but neither was "As Time Goes By," which definitely was included. Go figure.

Thank goodness that the music dept's @ certain film organizations, as well as through the wise and courteous decisions of the corporate heads thereof (e.g. Warner Bros Pictures and 20th Century Studios), had the shred of common decency to maintain their original orchestration scores and kept safe in those respective libraries as opposed to consigning the collection to the city dump as several other conglomerates have already done or destroyed through flames.

Steiner was the John Williams of the golden age of Hollywood. He was nominated for an Oscar for this music but lost out, mainly because he did not write As Time Goes By, nor, of course the Marsellies. He won the Academy Award for Gone With the Wind, and Now Voyager, two other iconic classical films from the said golden age, maybe never to be equalled.
Actually, Steiner did not win the Oscar for "Gone With the Wind." The Oscar was won by Richard Hageman and two or three other composers for "Stagecoach." Steiner certainly was the godfather of Hollywood music, but Alfred Newman won more Oscars and had more Oscar nominaions. He also get the career of John Williams started by giving him a job as a pianist in the 20th Century-Fox orchestra. Later, Williams set a new record for Oscar wins.
Very appropriately "Hollywood"-style expression from the strings. I'm not sure what subtelties go into it, but is a different feel to pure classical/romantic playing.
Lots of vibrato, downbowing, and jazz harmonies to go with the phrasing definately make it sound different from romantic/classical string playing
Yes. I absolutely adore hollywood golden age music. I think the composers of that era were absolute master of orchestration. Such richness of sound. It is indeeed different from the standard repertoire.

The top studios, especially MGM, hired first rate composers. MGM spent the money and the results were onscreen.
And in the late 60s they then basically threw all the orchestrations away. Shame.

The future for classical music seems to be in good hands still in Europe mostly - think John Wilson is British, playing a lot of favourite American repertoire.

C’est sans compter sur ces « quelques » notes, brillamment interprétées, chantre du charisme et de l’élégance, qui mystifient l’atmosphère inégalable de la toile de fond que constitue l’aventure d’un des plus grand duo cinématographique. Bogart never said "Play it again Sam" although the line has become synonymous with the movie. Bogart said to Sam the pianist "if you can play it for her you can play it for me" having banned Sam from ever playing that song again
Ingrid Bergman (Ilsa Lund) said it to Sam. "Play it Sam. Play it for old times sake. Play As Time goes by"

You are wrong. This suite was compiled by the late Christopher Palmer for the Charles Gerhardt recording 'The Classic Film Scores of Max Steiner'. As it is published any orchestra, including Mr Black's, may hire the parts for performance.
+J S R Lasher Just in case you didn't know who Stanley Black was - "Stanley Black OBE (14 June 1913 - 27 November 2002) was an English bandleader, composer, conductor, arranger and pianist. He wrote and arranged many film scores and recorded prolifically for the Decca label (including London and Phase 4). Beginning with jazz collaborations with American musicians such as Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter during the 1930s, he moved into arranging and recording in the Latin American music style and also won awards for his classical conducting."

Thank you. This is a beautiful performance but the Gerhardt recording is more powerful. Wilson doesn't get the opening "Moroccan" rhythms to sound as exotic as the Gerhardt recording. Max Steiner. Marvelous composer. Charles Gerhardt. Marvelous musician/conductor.

It sounds very much like the Stanley Black's arrangement, who opened the suite with the Warner Bros signature theme. It would not surprise me that Mr. Wilson used Black's arrangement, since he admired Stanley's works very much.

I don't think anyone knows who played the piano in the original soundtrack, but I I've never heard it equalled.
Most likely the studio pianist, Jean Vincent Plummer.
I m almost sure that this arrangement was written by Stanley Black. Anybody knows better?
