Kansas city quail farms would beg to differ on the size differences. Jumbo meat makers are much bigger than standard. They all might be the same species but they are selective bred for what you want. My jumbo meat makers are double the size of my standard ones and the eggs they lay are nearly twice the size too.
Reality is jumbo is a term given to meat coturnix as they are selective bred to be bigger. Non are called brown that's a seperate quail that's not coturnix called the common brown quail which isn't same bird as coturnix. Standard size wild type coturnix and jumbos are the breed japenese pharaoh both the same colour just ones bred to be a bigger coturnix. Then you have italians and english whites and other colours of the same bird species that can be bred to jumbo size.
With my recent batch of Coturnix quail I noticed significant size difference. This video helped. Now I'm going to choose the largest male to mate for future quail generations. Thanks.
I hatched eggs sold as jumbo, and celadon (Blue eggs, from another farm) which hatch as a variety of feather colors and patterns. The "jumbos" are huge in comparison to the others. I assume the jumbos have been selectively bred for larger size, so you are right that they technically aren't different, but I will continue breeding my "jumbos" selectively based on weight. The others I will breed for color pattern and blue egg laying.
I keep them as pets, I just ordered mixed fertile quail eggs. I just wanted them as pets so I didn't care much, I just wanted them to look different so I could tell them apart easily, and I got that. I incubated 12 eggs and 6 hatched (apparently that's normal, you should get 1/2 - 1/3). I gave 2 away and kept 4, so I now have 5 (I was hatching them as companions for one I had as it lost its companion - long story), 3 females and 2 males as it turns out. They were just maturing last autumn and the males got a bit feisty, but settled down over the winter but now it's spring we had to seperate the males and we put one with one female and one with two. We are thinking of incubating some eggs (probably 6 to get 2 or 3) later in the year (when our friend isn't using her incubator and can let us borrow it), around June.
Same here. I call mine jumbo for the simple fact that they are double damn near triple the size of my standard birds. So yes jumbo is a term that can be used and is accurate. I would also never keep 5 roos in a cage with 1-2 hens like this guy thats just trouble waiting to happen.
I took 5 coturnix quail eggs from the same brown female quail the only female that I have with a red male and I hatched all 5 eggs and had 3 different color variations one of the quail chicks is 100% white and is the smallest of the 5 chicks at 6 weeks old now.
I use to live on a farm full of quails I raised 2000 quails but then a huge tornado ripped through my farm and All I saw was birds flying away I lost all my birds but now I moved to another farm and have 803 quails
That happened to me just over a year ago, the tornado ONLY killed my birds and damaged my coops. Took me one year to rebuild my egg laying numbers by incubating the eggs from survivors
hi Urban. i am from South Africa and i struggle a lot to find Coturnix Quail here. Now the first question is will they do fine here by me, it gets in the summer around 40 degrees Celsius and the winter go seldom below 0 degrees Celsius. Do you know of someone that might be interested in sponsoring me some eggs to incubate. We have chickens and it is going well with them and now we want to start with Quails for some extra income( selling eggs mostly ). Can you please help? Thanks for the video :)
They will do fine on those conditions, assuming they have decent air flow, shade and water access. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with international shipping of eggs. I will keep looking for someone in South Africa that breeds Coturnix.
How do you go about getting the different colored quail? I have 5 brown baby coturnix quails but 2 are males only 3 females. I don't want to kill a boy so I'd love to add a couple of different colored females to the bunch. Thanks.
there are regular brown quail and jumbo brown. most have been crossed so its hard to find a true jumbo, but if you can find a true jumbo they are noticeably bigger
Tuxedos come in all sorts of combinations of colors. I have silvers and tibetans that are tuxedos. They are the same bird, you just get that color combination by breeding the right colors of birds.
Should I be selecting the biggest eggs ? Will this hatch out bigger sized quail? Also, I got a mixed lot of eggs (all different colors) how many generations until they breed true?
To a certain degree that is true. I hatch ALL my eggs, the ones I don't eat anyway, and I select the biggest birds. And I would say at least 2-3 generations.
Urban Aviary thanks for replying. I like the Italian and the English whites. I will focus on those. I have some eggs that are triple the size of others but seem to have same incubation time. Also I forgot to mention i have one hen who lays a completely beige egg (no markings) Is that something to be concerned over?
the only color advantage ive really noticed is white birds are easier to pluck. a poultry farmer explained it like this. the color pigment is like a gel pen ink pushed out the feather folical and it can make them slightly...and i mean slightly harder to remove from the bird then a white or pigmentless feather. not sure if this is "scientific" but i have noticed my english whites are easier to get the wing pin feathers off and though feathers on the side and back that are sometimes more resistant plucking. could be a load of fooey but just my experience.
The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked. Unfortunately no, there's no way to tell by the egg color. That sure would make things easier though!
I don't see any one raising bob white quail...I know they are larger but was wondering if their meat tastes different than a cortunix quail?? Enjoy your videos! Thanks!!!
Bobwhites are very good meat birds, and I believe the meat is very similar though I've never tried Bobwhite. The problem with Bobwhites is that the only lay seasonally so their production potential is limited. Also, Bobwhites do not grow to full size as fast as Coturnix do. Bobwhites definitely are bigger and better for meat from a size standpoint but since they don't grow to maturity in 6-8 weeks like a Coturnix, they will always be inferior as a meat production bird. Thanks or watching, hope that helps!
How old are they? They start crowing around 6-7 weeks. They do most often in the morning and evening. And some birds are just quieter than others as well.
I'm thinking about buying more hens. If you ever get more, do you put the new quail with your groups or do you try and keep them separate? Also, when are you able to tell the gender of your quail based on their feathers? Thanks so much for posting your videos.
+Kayley Schurman Great questions! When I get new birds I introduce them to the rest of the flock at about 5 weeks. The trick is to put then together at night, in the dark. When they wake up next to each other they kind of just assume they were always there. If anyone is being a bulky or if any particular bird is getting bullied then I try putting them with a different group. If they still have issues then I cull that bird. And I can tell the gender pretty well at about 3 weeks. Sometimes it's easy at 2 weeks, but usuallu at about 3. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Yeah my jumbos are literally 3 times the size of my standards. Anything over 350 grams is considered jumbo though my largest was 525 grams(average about 440).jumbos are literally bred by picking the largest and continually breeding the largest in each generation. Jumbo browns are those lines bred to be larger as opposed to standard browns which haven't been linebred for size
+Kevin Sanchez If I have a bird that is malicious to other birds I will try putting it with another group and if it doesn't get along with them then I slaughter it and eat it.
Great info thank you. I will say if you like Italian - you would love Golden Giants. The male has no spots and soo beautiful to look at. My most calm and placid color type. I have seven male birds living in one large pen atm and they all get along. At one point I thought a couple of the males were not actually mating and being far too gentle with their girls. It seems they do just fine - but even with 1 male to 3 hens - no bald spots or feathers out of place. Could be genetics but the birds come from several different breeders to prevent inbreeding.
The yellow and brown lab example is not the best as those are the same breed of dogs , while the different varieties of Coturnix can be different breeds too , Japanese Coturnix is the species , then there are several breeds and colors .
You make it sound like no such thing as Jumbo browns . I hate to tell you , there is . Now , the part where everyone clams that their wild coturnix are jumbos is what I hate .It took me years to find real jumbos again . Some are over 16 ounces .

Finally! I’ve been looking all over to find another bird that looked like mine, your darker silver looks just like mine!
A jumbo quail is determined by the age and weight no matter the breed. If it’s 10ozs at 10weeks old then it’s technically considered a jumbo.
Thank you for the wonderful information
Those birds need a dust bath. Some light and fresh air would be nice too.

Give them chick starter
