Biggest problem with this version:
You can't have Yellow Toad and Blue Toad at the same time, which means at least one player always has a handicap with four players.

Yeah. I don't feel like it would have been hard to make it so that when one player chooses Yellow or Blue Toad, the option changes to the opposite Toad for everyone else, so you can play as both.

I got through the whole of 3D World in about a month not counting Champion's Road. That level by itself took about 2 weeks for me to complete and I just got really lucky on it.
Your wish has been granted Arlo, there finally is a way to disabled the mid-air spin move being mapped to the jump button, ableit a really stupid way to disable it, but hey it's there.

They also don't use the default control scheme from this game for the NSBMU theme in SMM2, they use the the optional one that you would activate using this method. So they obviously realized at some point that it was a mistake. Why not just change the control scheme that works to being the default? Cause Nintendo.
Another huge gripe I had with this game, and every Mario game on the switch is the inability to remap controls within the switch menu. Unless I'm playing on an NES, I hate holding down the run button with my thumb, and then rocking my thumb to hit the jump button. I used to Speedrun SMW on emulators, and I would always set run to the right trigger, so that could hold run down with one finger, and click my jumps with a completely separate finger. This feels so much more natural for me. This problem is kind of made worse by the smaller buttons you have on a joy-con. I tried playing on the old Mario games on the Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES services, and they felt horrible to me.
Then the 10.0.0 update hit, and all my dreams came true. Finally I can run in every Mario game using ZR, and even map the spinjump in SMW to ZL, and I feels amazing. Before I was playing with two fingers, one for moving Mario, and the other for running, jumping, and spin-jumping. Now I can play with two thumbs on the face, and two fingers on the triggers, and each digit is doing just one thing. This might just be a personal preference type thing, but whenever I'm playing a game I don't like my finger to have to move around too much. If a game requires both sticks being active at all times, I set every action oriented buttons to the bumpers and triggers. If at all possible, I don't like using the face buttons at all unless the right stick goes unused. The only real exception to this is BOTW, and it's only because ZL becomes your main camera controlling button in combat. Although now that I can remap controls I might have to mess around with an alt-scheme for BOTW too.

Two things I didn't remember to include until it was too late:
Getting kicked out to the world map every time you die is EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I know it wants to give you a chance to use items before going back in, but there are many better ways it could do this.
The ice flower is like the worst item in the game. I don't want to freeze baddies, I want to kill them. Plus the projectile bounces so stupidly high that it's hard to line up your shot. This wouldn't be such a problem if it didn't feel like the vast majority of the items in the game were ice flowers. It's like every other level, that's what you're using. It gets really old.
Also yeah, this game isn't five years old, it's a little over six. Not sure what I was thinking there.
Arlo The Ice Flower is meant to turn enemies into platforms for reaching otherwise inaccessible areas, in some cases.

The ice flower is my favorite powerup in the game, but to each thier own I suppose.
Totally agree on the "death" part. It took me just a few attempts before giving up on one of Luigi U's harder levels because of the sheer time it takes to just retry. Heck, that kind of issue ruined Super Mario Maker to me ; in Super Expert, you can easily find yourself speding more time watching 8-bit Marios waltzing around than actually playing through levels. Ugh!

People who have playwd the very first Super Mario Bross and the even better Super Mario Bross 3 love to play 2D Super Mario games. This is why Nintendo has made the New Super Mario serie. Of course they make good money out if but it's perhaps esch of them are excellent games on their own. Even if this is a 2D Mario game, it does take a while for developpers to create new levels.

@@aardbei54 Wario as a Nabbit reskin makes sense in context since Wario was technically invincible in most of his games and hording items and treasure as collectables.
Kinda wouldn't make sense though. Why would Wario and Waluigi want to help Peach? Maybe if they established that they want cash, and hope that getting her back means they can charge her for it, but I doubt Nintendo would bother making a cutscene to explain that for a feature that wouldn't do much to benefit game sales.
I'd probably get it if it was $30 or $40. $60 is just too much for a port.
(edit) To clear it up a little, I wasn't that big a fan of Mario U one the Wii U initially. It's just plain and didn't expand on the formula of the series like Mario Kart 8 did to the Mario Kart series. That's why I bought MK8 Deluxe, because Mario Kart 8 was already a good game WORTH $60, and now I could play it on the go with new characters and a better battle mode.
(edit edit) just a nitpick, I tried the Mario U Deluxe demo at Target once, and I agree with Arlo: WHO THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE YOU SPIN WITH A?!

Captain Cold At least that actually has new things in it plus the dlc included isn’t it for free. Literally the only new thing this port has is Toadette. The graphics and music are practically untouched, no new levels or content of any kind to experience aside form a very easy mode character, and even introducing new problems with controls and picking balanced characters for multiplayer.
@@rarm5899 lest you forget NSLU was DLC? I will admit that if you have 4 people one of you having to go easy mode is kinda stinky, but that wasn't his main point. He was saying it was a port and that he wouldn't pay 60 bucks for it, but MK8D is as well.

I absolutely suck at platformers so it was nice to have a 3D platformer that I could access in some capacity. The levels were short and sweet and I felt like it accomplished what it set out to accomplish beautifully. Not the most ambitious title in the 3D mario line but certainly a fun one imo

I really hate that Toadette and Nabbit have a handicap. What if I just wanna play as Nabbit because he looks cool or something? They shouldn’t have a handicap and there should just be an easier mode.
Also the people who developed DK Country Tropical Freeze should develop a New Super Mario Bros game, they could give it so much life and interesting mechanics and great music.
That's Retro Studios. Everything they make is gold. Pretty much the modern equivalent of Rare in the 90s. As of now, they're in charge of developing Metroid Prime 4, so I wouldn't expect them to take on a Mario sequel anytime soon.
Graphomite Well we know that they're working on Metroid Prime 4 now that the previous version of the game has gone into the trash, but that begs the question... What might Retro have been working on before Metroid Prime 4? They had lots of time to create _something_ spectacular, so it doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility that they could be working on a new Mario game as well.
It's still far-fetched, but hey, a Mario fan can dream, can't he?
I play with my wife and she's always toadette because she's the only Pink character. It would be nice if she had a toad mode. no way to play without a handicap if you have four players.

I usually don't react super strongly when watching reviews, but when Arlo made the comparison of doing something completely new to Miyamoto's comments about F-Zero, I shouted "YES!!!" more loudly than I would most things.
My biggest problem with this game is that it wasn’t a collection of every new soup game because that would actually be worth something
I never thought about it that way! A "New Super Mario Bros Deluxe" should really be a compilation of:
- NSMB (DS)
- NSMB Wii
- NSMB 2 (3DS)
- NSMB U
- NSLuigi U

I think he does it just right so that Nintendo doesn't hate him. He rants, but he's never mercilessly bashing a game. Even when talking about bad things, he tends to lean positive and look on the bright side.
To be fair to his 4/7, a lot of people like this game for doing a good job recreating the 2D Mario experience and the people I know that had the Wii U version said it was fun, polished, but nothing that gets you particularly excited. That is, you've seen it all before. So I think a 4/7 is fair (especially in a world where 6/10 is considered an awful score from professional critics). And it's nice to seen someone (professional critic or You-Tuber) not totally spurg out over this game. I've seen this game get glowing reviews from almost everyone. I feel like I'm going crazy because it's a straight up port of a super derivative game that totally failed to convince anyone to buy a Wii U six years ago. Although I did defend it from being totally trashed, there's no way this old, recycled content would get 9/10 no matter how polished it is.

They are planning to make New Super Mario 4 not a remake of Super Mario 4 (Super Mario World). Yes, most people in the West ignore that Super Mario 4 indeed came out and most of them played it because it came with the SNES.
@@lilylopnco Nobody knows. Even though it's considered Super Mario World 2, it should have been a separate game because the gameplay is complety different and it gave birth to Yoshi's island serie.
@@lilylopnco I feel like that game is only Mario World 2 on technicality. It's _so_ different from 1 and I feel like everyone pretty much acknowledges "Yoshi's Island" as its own thing.
The game is basically just a mashup of SMB3 and World, so it's certainly "inspired" in that sense. I played it back on Wii U and agree that it's a bit on the bland side but it's still a lot of fun and hits the "good enough" territory. The controls weren't an issue for me with that version, but I haven't played the Switch one. NSMBU is certainly the best of its respective series just based on presentation, aesthetic, and level design. Maybe that's not saying much, but at least Nintendo delivered a polished experience that's a culmination of what came before.

I honestly think the biggest problem with this game is the price. I really don't get Nintendo's thought process with most of the WiiU ports. Charging full price for a port of a game from the last generation of consoles without making any signicant changes besides adding an easy mode is kind of insulting to the consumer in my opinion.
Felipe Pagani that’s always been Nintendo, and most Japanese game companies. But especially Nintendo, they have large reservoirs in the bank and could care less whether you buy their ports or not. Which equates to hardly ever their being sales or discounts on their software.
I guess they could justify the price because both it and Luigi U are within one package.
I was ok with Mario Kart at full price but this game does not seem worth the price. I got the game but only because I split the cost with my brother, otherwise I would not have gotten it
I agree. Nintendo does not care about any wii u game fans and they really only care about people who bought the switch for their first console. Thats how they charge full price and people buy because they either didnt have a wii u or they dont know it was a port
It isn't necessarily a matter of being stingy-- It's a staple of quality. It's Nintendo not wanting to imply their game is worth less now compared to a couple years ago.
I don't necessarily think it's justified, but that is how Nintendo perceives it. It's why all of their products take so long to lower in price, port or otherwise.
Thank you for saying what you did about F-Zero! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who sees Miyamoto's statements about not having any new ideas as somewhat hypocritical, in a world where NSMB exists in its current state.
At the very least, you could say Mario games simply pay the bills whereas F-Zero probably wouldn't. But beyond that yeah it's very silly.
Miyamoto doesn't really have much of a choice. New Super Mario Bros. is 2nd only to Mario Kart in terms of best-selling Nintendo IPs for the last 10 years. I'm sure Miyamoto was cringing more than Arlo that this game made its way out the door. F-Zero, on the other hand, would take some juice to get started again what with how lousy the sales of the last few games were.
F-Zero is something that Miyamoto NEEDS to revive before it's trademark expires.
I would honestly love to see a new F-Zero, even thou it probably wouldnt sell that well at first. They should give the series a 2nd chance

This game in a nutshell.
It’s “funny” that both the floaty controls and the jump button making you twirl were fixed in Super Mario Maker, yet return in NSMBUD (these acronyms are getting stupid btw). Shows how little they cared about this port
The jump button didn't make you twirl in the original NSMBU either. They added it just for this port and presented it as "making the game easier" or something like that. As Arlo said, it's a bafflingly stupid design choice.

I was initially appalled by these controls, but there is one upside:
For the powerups that do something else when pressing ZR, this change allows you to twirl if you want.
Can we talk about how little this game was marketed back in 2012 when the Wii U was a thing even? Like I felt in the back of my brain that this game was meh at the start. Now in 2019 of January, why am I seeing it when yet again, Nintendo did not market it all to well. Hell, I could say the same for Mario Tennis Aces but at least you kinda feel something from that game as opposed to this.

1:52 you can actually turn this off, just press hold down the left stick for about 3 seconds on the title screen and press R and L to make it so that pressing the A button doesn't make you do a mid-air spin. I don't know why Nintendo made the way to activate this better control system really obscure, they could have just put it in an options menu or something.

If I were to make this a “deluxe” game, here’s the things I would’ve added to make it worth $60.
-Add Wario and Waluigi. Maybe this wouldn’t have really made sense since they’re both rivals to the Mario brothers but I still think it would’ve been cooler than Toadette.
-More power ups. Maybe 2 or 3 powers up would’ve been better than just simply porting over the originals (Electricity, water etc).
-Importing more worlds. If they were just going to port the worlds from the Wii U, why not port the worlds from the Wii version?
-You should be able to use or add items to your inventory while playing levels. By doing this it would be easier not to waste your power ups before starting your level and then getting hit immediately after.
-Fix common bugs (such as the one from the beginning of the video). Don’t really need to explain this one.
Maybe I’m thinking too big about adding stuff like this into the game, but considering this game is $60 and has “deluxe” in the name I feel like this would be somewhat fair. But if it was just a port (which it is), it should’ve just been $40.
1. They're rivals to the Mario Bros. and they really don't fit in the game. Why?
2. This is a port of the Wii U game. Not a new game. If you add new power-ups to a game with already designed levels, then you would have to play-test the entire game to see if the power-ups work with the level design. What would you need an electricity power-up for? There's also already the Ice Flower power-up and the Penguin suit, why would you have ice and water power-ups that'll probably do different things and confuse the player?
3. Again, this is called New Super Mario Bros *U* Deluxe. This game is a port of the Wii U game and SOLELY a port of that game. Not of other New Super Mario Bros titles. Why would you include more levels and keep a title that will make customers think it's purely a port of the Wii U game and nothing else?
4. If you were able to add power-ups to your inventory by just collecting them (while having a more powerful power-up) then this game would be easier than it already is. Same with using items in your inventory. And if someone gets hit after getting a power-up, the game cannot be faulted for that.
5. That was not a bug, it was simple player ignorance of the platforms. This is an intended feature, if you get squashed or otherwise flattened, you lose your power-up. And, while I and probably you found it funny, it is not a bug, as you are implying. "Don't need to explain this one" shows that you don't know any other bugs in this game except that "bug" if you ask me.
However, I do agree with you that this port should have been sold for way less. 20 or 30 bucks would've made this game much more acceptable.

Tbh the plot for 2d Mario is almost always "Bowser kidnaps the princess" in one form or another. Besides SMB 2 it doesn't really get much more involved than that. Even Odyssey was really just that simple, just replace robotic arm for possessed hat.
bowser having a robotic arm could have been an interesting plot. the problem is nintendo didn't put enough effort into fleshing out said plot.
@ hey yo Pretty much unless you count the GB tittles but as far as the other Mario games are concerned that 1 time where Mario went into space and helped a cosmic princess save the galaxy in addition to rescuing Peach is the closest thing we will probably ever get to a proper story line sadly.
The main problem I have with this game is that it's called the "Deluxe" version.
Outside of Toadette & Peachette and the ability for Player 1 to (finally) be a character other than Mario, this is the Wii U game packaged with it's 1 DLC.
Compare that to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which added multiple new characters, an entire new Battle Mode and even had some of it's own DLC in addition to being the Original packaged with it's DLC.
There was enough content for people to double dip if they had the original.
This game however, if you have the original on Wii U you might as well stick with it especially with the better spin controls. The Luigi U DLC was released digitally, physically and even in a bundle with the original. That's 3 different ways to get the DLC for the Wii U version so it's hard to justify getting the Switch version for the DLC specifically if you already own the original.
If you don't own the original, then congratulations because you are getting a complete & pretty good game here and you are the targeted audience for this port.
It's just such a shame that almost nothing new was added to this port like Mario Kart 8.
Honestly, the wii u had more content then this 60$ port, because they removed boost mode , which is still in the files mind you, and it adds nothing of worth
If i had the choise between this and the wii u version, id go with the wii u version
But if you dont have a wii u, its still not worth 60$,maby at 30
Also NSMB games are realy not that hard to make(i litteraly oppend a level editor and made a rom hack)

@@coastersplus it would still work since the switch has a touch screen, pretty well actualy (handheld mode only though...)
@@muffet1536 the touch screen on the Switch will always be underutilized because they push for parity between docked and handheld. For the time being they're still pushing it as a "hybrid" so not very many games will take advantage of handheld only features.
except mario kart 8 deluxe doesn't have any new race tracks.

I played this for a while on the Switch but with the volume low so didn’t even realise they were dancing to the ‘ba-ba!’ Just kept seeing it and thinking WTF!
I love this game. The world needed an HD version of a Super Mario Bros 3-esque game. The worlds are gorgeous, colorful and playful. I’m glad we have it. That said, it’s probably time to try something a bit different now when it comes to 2D Mario platformers. Our next 2D Mario game should definitely be an HD version of Super Mario Land, or something different. Switch it up. There have been three New SMB games in the Mushroom Kingdom. Let’s do Sarasaland now! Maybe make Wario, Waluigi, or Toadsworth playable characters (instead of just having Blue or Yellow Toad).
Playing this game again 7 years later just shows how much better tropical freeze is by comparison.
I really should get around to trying that one out.

Yes!!! Like I know each game has a similar setup which is getting back to they're homes but Tropical Freeze does it better. One of the greatest things about Tropical Freeze was it's context throughout the levels. Like I love the transitions of each level occured in the game. While Mario U just has you going through the basic Grass wordl, Desert world, Beach world, Forest world (except that one level which resembles an oil painting), a Sky world, and a Lava world.

Nah. I bought it on day one. It's pretty great--aside from the extra jump thingy mechanic that throws off your rhythm. Good purchase.

Also, sales don’t tell the quality of a game. 2D Mario games just sell well, and so what if it’s selling better than Smash in Japan? It’s not like it broke massive sales numbers like Smash did anyways... And I for one didn’t like the game!
New Super Mario Bros w/Fried Cheese. Your new ability is the Cheese Suit which lets you throw cheese balls that damage enemies and stick them in place for a couple seconds. It also lets you stick and stretch-Armstrong your way up walls.
This started as a joke, and then I just actually designed a game mechanic.

Try out Donkey Kong tropical freeze, it's an amazing platformer, worth the experience.
I'm kind of bummed about this one. All the WiiU ports make perfect sense, because it means a bigger audience and a chance for all their hard work to actually make some money. That said, I really wish they had just put out a new New Super Mario game specifically for the Switch instead of porting the WiiU entry to this series.

@jesus barrera Maybe, but all these ports still make a lot of sense. As Arlo put it so well, it brings the WiiU's better games to a new and potentially much larger audience. My issue with this one is that Nintendo has been making a unique New Super Mario Bros game for each system. First the DS, then the Wii, then the 3DS, then the WiiU. I would have preferred a new installment for the Switch to keep that pattern going.

I know this is really late, but to remedy that issue you mentioned at the beginning, if you hold down the jump button you still get the higher bounce off of enemies. It feels a bit weird at first, but when you get the hang of it, it helps tremendously.
Playing as Toadette is just really fun for some reason. I played this game on the Wii U and I don't remember having near the amount of fun that I am having now.

At the start of the video, you mentioned that you were having trouble getting the max height from enemy bounces because you were pressing the jump button and got a twirl instead. But couldn't you just hold down the button as you land instead of repressing it like that?

I’m just gonna say it, but this game made me lose hope in Mario Maker for Switch. This is literally the 5th or 6th time we’ve gotten a generic “new” Super Mario Bros game, and it honestly seems like Nintendo flat out doesn’t care about 2D Mario anymore.
I see the opposite, it's obvious they would want to push this out first, because no one would buy this if Mario Maker were an option so they are going to let this do its thing first

It’s just that when I look at this game, then I look at stuff like Bowsers Inside Story DX, it just makes me sad that Nintendo isn’t taking all aspects of Mario to the level of creativity that they could be. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had loads of fun with the games in the NSMB series. I just want Nintendo to push Mario to it’s true capabilities.

@Arlo: Ice flower can kill enemies, that his the only thing that kills dry bones except for throwing an object at them and the star man, fire snack can only be kill with the ice power-up, and the ice power-up can kill lava bubble, and kill bowser flame, to kill a dry bones with ice power-up pick it up when it his a block of ice and toss it at a wall, or at other dry bones, you can also kill it by ground pounding the ice cube. Phirahna plant when frozen cannot be grab, so you have to ground pound them to kill them, the giant pirhana plant can only be frozen for a very small amount of time you have to ground pound them at the exact point they are still frozen.
I really enjoy this game, I love the controls, level design, and power ups. I watched the whole video and heard you disagree with what I think about this game, but I respect you SO much for what you said at 12:45. It means a lot to me that one of my favorite TH-camrs respects others and understands that others have different opinions. So i just wanted to say thanks for that and thanks for making all the videos you make, because I really enjoy them.

In the advertising for the email Nintendo sent to their subscription list it said “perfect for getting new people into Mario” so I think they’re going to bring in an actually “new” 2D Mario game into the switch. Possibly to ease people into Mario maker “2.0” better, eh?
Mario Maker 2 will probably come out next year, since its Super Mario Bros (NES)'s 35th anniversary. I have the Wii U and 3DS versions but would be happy to triple dip! Hopefully this year, Nintendo make a new Mario Golf to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1999 Mario Golf, that would be sick!

Man, that whole problem with jumping and bouncing was not a problem with the Wii U version, where the actions were assigned to two separate buttons like they should be. Very strange design choice, and I can't imagine how much more frustrating it must make some of the later levels.
Great review Arlo! I bought the game on the Wii U a few years back, and enjoyed it for what it was. Not something I ever think I'll ever feel the need to revisit, honestly the only game I've played that I felt was more creatively bankrupt was the 3ds title.
I just used the ZR button for spinning like on the Wii U. Never had any issues with the controls and never accidently spun by pressing the A button in mid air.
Arlo as always, you're the best Nintendo TH-camr out there. Rather than rushing reviews out before the embargo ends, I love how you put the effort in to give a fair review willing to call out the flaws of the game while also praising what you like about the game.

Something I think would be interesting take on the series is a 2D Mario with from metroidvanias, such as Hollow Knight. Traveling through a gigantic castle and surrounding lands trying to free Peach in a open and dynamic world would be loads of fun. Things could be done to add more of a Mario fair such as a larger emphasis on platforming over combat, but that is for them to figure out.
I love this idea! Makes me think of Super Mario RPG on the SNES which blew my mind when it came out back in the day!

Arlo, using Super Mario Bros. 3 to judge how Mario Games handle is a mistake. It's the odd one out, having the least floaty controls out of the entire series.
NSMBUD plays a lot like Super Mario World does, and like the rest of the NSMB series.

I agree. I found SMB3 the easiest to control precisely.
Despite this, SMW happens to be my all-time favorite, but it's noticeably more floaty/slippery and seems to have been the mold for the NSMB series.

P.s. I've watched your videos for a while and quite enjoy how unique you are so I finally figured I should probably subscribe. So that I did.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you can bounce on enemies just by making sure that the jump button is in the pressed position when you collide with the enemy, which means you can press jump and hold it down and when you hit the enemy, you’ll jump off the enemy. Don’t even have to lift your finger off the jump button. Does that justify the button remap? No. It was fine the way it was in Mario maker where the spin was mapped to its own button. But maybe it’ll help.

I totally agree Arlo. Retro knocked the 2D platformer formula out of the park with the two latest DKC games.
Nintendo needs to up their game to meet the new standard. At least Mario Maker 2 is coming out soon and people will start making crazy, new, interesting Mario levels.
