    Next to the .30-06, the .338 win mag is one of my favorite rounds. Not terrible recoil, but amazing ballistics.

      Incredible knockdown power..I used to wonder why it was the gun of choice hunting caribou, which are not that big. Then I saw a caribou hunter step up on a grizzly and it all made sense.

      @@markkosa1 My Dad used his Sako .338 for deer here in Pennsylvania. If SHOT PLACEMENT is correct it will literally pick them off of their feet and kill them before they hit the ground. No meat wasted. Just both lungs and heart a bloody soup.

    Hickok, thanks for the problem solution. My daughter lives in the mountains 50 miles N. of Missoula MT. She's having black bear trouble, mostly from one big male. He's knocked down her front door twice and done the home shopping network for bears. He's killed a few chickens. Most troubling, however, is he keeps returning after being set upon by four good-sized dogs. Game and Fish said she could kill him, if they can't respond in time, because this is a dangerous bear.
    I'll fill that prescription (Rx: Ruger M77 Guide Gun .338 Win Mag, PRN) right away...Thanks!

      Dude you don't need a 338 win mag for anything in North America. you don't even need a 300 win mag but people who can't shoot want one to make up for accuracy. a 44 mag would take down a bear.

      jared Noah it could but it may not get through bone or enough tissue to do anything. a 250gr or 300 gr hard cast flat bullet loaded hot is the best weapon in a small package. You'd always want a bigger gun but it's not always easy to carry one. a 44 mag in a holster isn't as far away as a rifle can be

    One of my favorite calibers I used to hunt with one of these since I was 12. Huge power not too bad of a recoil. Also you can reach out pretty far with a good hand load great for elk where you need something to reach out and also still pack a lot of power.

    It really is a nice rifle, I own one myself, chambered in 300 Win Mag, fell in love with the stock at first sight. Shoots smooth as a baby's bottom, the muzzle break really takes quite a bit of recoil out, and its a practical, workable, accurate, reliable and durable rifle.

    I moved to Kodiak from Montana in 1984 and started hunting for deer with a Ruger M77 in .338 WM not because the Sitka Blacktail deer of Kodiak are particularly tough, but because I hunted in the company of Kodiak brown bears and suddenly the .30-06 I had been using before seemed a bit anemic in case a Brownie decided to charge me. I hunted deer in Kodiak 29 years and the big Nosler Partition 250 grain bullets ruined less meat than my wife's .243 did. They are heavy, tough bullets meant for bear and moose and don't expand excessively in such a light animal as a deer. But all the deer fell on the spot. Then I moved to Alabama in 2013, and although there are no Brownies here I've kept on using the old "Bazooka," as a friend of mine calls it, on whitetails. I've killed five of them in the past four years and--just like the Kodiak deer--they all fell on the spot as if they had been poleaxed. If I had to have only one rifle, it would have to be a .338 WM. Last winter I connected with a really nice eight-pointer, and the old Bazooka knocked it down--dead before it hit the ground absolutely motionless. I always shoot deer in the forward point of the shoulder blade. The heavy bullet breaks the spine and it's lights out. I am not a trophy hunter and we utilize every last ounce of deer meat. It's on our table more often than beef, chicken or pork, and certainly much healthier.

      Yeah I kill all my deer and elk with my 338 wm 250 grain nosler partitions, lights out 1 shot and less meat damage than a 270 or 30- 06, I love the rifle

    I own one of these in 338 win mag and took an elk with it a little over a year ago. I'm with you Hickok, I don't enjoy shooting a 338, but in this gun with the muzzle brake it's quite enjoyable to shoot. Interestingly too, when I switch to the weighted attachment on the end, the point of impact doesn't change much at all. Great gun.

      Perhaps YOU need to practice more, not all shooting takes place in a perfect world. Put on your man pants and burn up a few boxes doing what he does. If it's too much for you, sell it and find a caliber more suited to what you can handle. No sense having a rifle that you can't handle or makes you nervous when it's really needed.
      Read the Alaska state game regs on brown bear hunting, they recommend you get a 30-06 if the bigger guns are too much to handle.

    Had a good friend that loved his .338WM, while I preferred the .300WM for long range deer, elk and moose hunting (and the occasional bear). While we loved hunting, we did a LOT of weekend 'paper killing' after working up custom handloads for our respective rifles. What we found after ranging, chronographing, penetration testing, etc., was that the .338WM has a LOT MORE 'trajectory curve' than the .300WM (do NOT confuse the .338WM with the Lapua round, at ALL...Lapua has a LOT more flatness)...and in the end, found that I had about 200-yards more effective range than his .338WM for the same 'brush cover' in actual hunting. Yes, he could easily load 200 and 220 grains for his rifle...and even more, but the trajectories looked like a .30-30's as you went over 220...and being made fun of, because you are firing a HOWITZER (with associated trajectory arch) isn't cool...not when the guy with the .300WM is shooting 168-grains out to 1000 yards and staying SOLID in the 7-ring or better! Can't kill Elk if you can't HIT THE ELK!!!

    I just received a beautiful Ruger 77 MKII Blued with a wood stock, Leupold VXII in 338 Win Mag. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet, thanks for the video. Now I'm drooling. I watch your stuff all of the time. I was wondering if I could get some clippings from a Laminate Tree to splice into a Virginia Pine just to see what will happen. Thanks. :-)

    To add the fourth round you have to press the first three into the magazine allowing the fourth round to be chambered using the bolt; it works very well. I usually load four for elk hunting but rarely use more than one round with the 250 grn Speer Grand Slam bullet at 2600 fps. Great gun and cartridge combination. Great video, as usual.

    Such a unique, sturdy/ tank like rifle. LOVE that it has a Mauser style action and a huge fan of the safety. I researched the guide gun and after watching countless videos and reading up on Ruger forums from other folks who own this rifle, I had to buy one! I ordered one chambered in 30-06 and can’t wait to be called Mr “Aught Six Plinkster” ha ha.

    Wow there is a huge difference between the 338 win mag and the 338 Lapua. I always thought they were pretty similar but watching your video made me look up the Ballistics and roughly a 1000 foot pounds of energy difference. Cool gun wish it held 5 rounds non the less very cool rifle👍

      I don't see a four-round capacity being any meaningful disadvantage in a hunting rifle; I routinely load my M77 Mark II/Hawkeye rifles in .30-'06, .358 Win, and .338 RCM with three: One for the chamber and two on standby in the magazine. I rarely am forced to dip into the magazine.

    The first Centerfire rifle I ever purchased in 1979 was a Model 77 and 7 mm mag with what I believe to be was a 26-in thin barrel. The rifle weighed 9 lb. And I got a load for 140 grain Spire point and some tips on how to load it that was loaded with I believe 69 grains of h4350. Which was three grains over Max of any load in any book anywhere at the time. But I trusted the bench rest Champion that gave me the load. And it fired my first group was a 20-round group that fired into a hole that the extreme edge of the hole didn't measure more than .33".
    I fired several 20 round groups into that small of a group with both Hornady Spire Point 140 grain and Sierra Spire point and 140 grain, which were two completely different design ogive bullets. The Model 77 is capable of phenomenal accuracy. Beyond anything that I've ever seen a Remington or a Winchester model 70 produce.

    These rifles chambered in 375 Ruger have become very popular where I'm from. I work at the local gun store and we've sold a literal ton of these. Main reasons for the popularity is the stopping power for grizzlies, and they make an excellent round for dropping a 2000lb bison

    What's the difference between 338 lapua, and 338 Winchester?

    • @devirandersen5760
      @devirandersen5760 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lapua has the ability to travel much farther than the WM, and its a bit longer in size. Lapua is the superior round, however the box cost is pretty damn high, which is keeping me away from it, but, Im not trying to make no 1 mi. shots.

    • @MistaRunIt
      @MistaRunIt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Devir Andersen yea and to get that long mile shot it is substantially a lot more recoil Than the .338 Winmag also for just 350 to 400 FPS more. A lapua I think is good in combat where you would need to be very far past 300 yds to decrease your chances of getting shot at or detected while sniping in a war environment. Just my thoughts
