    Years ago, when I was an FFL, I ordered a bolt-action .375 for a friend who was rapturous about the idea. When it came in, it had the most beautiful piece of Circassian Walnut he or I have ever, ever, seen. Stunning. We took it to a quarry and tested it with a custom Magna-ported, Mannlicher-stocked .458 I had, a Ruger M77 in .220 Swift, and a Ruger No. 1 in .25-06. We shot gallon jugs of water, and the most plastic damage was from the .220, (the plastic looked like it had been attacked by a lion) but the .375 was a heavy hitter. Amazingly, the .458 was a pussycat in comparison - the long stock, big vented recoil pad, and Magna-ported barrel made it milder to shoot than all but the Swift. He was ecstatic, and treasured that .375 so much he gifted me a - are you ready? Colt Python. Yup. As thanks for the rifle. Now that's what you call an enthusiast! I still have it. True story.

    My Grandfather Bought a .375 Rifle off someone at a gun show a long time ago, It came with a mounted scope and One round Missing out of a Box of 20.
    He sold it a week later, with Two Rounds Missing out of a Box of 20.

      45-70 does a number on a deer though, I have one of the navy arms 45-70 bolt guns they were selling in the 70's using the Siamese mauser action, it is strong enough that you can load almost to 458 magnum specs.

      Not anti-gun-I’m a lefty, and I’ve always owned weapons-but pro-regulation. Like with any dangerous product. There’s no interference with the 2nd Amendment, which specifies “...well regulated...”. In fact, you’d have a much more sympathetic audience if you acknowledged what, to me and many of us, are reasonable and evidence-based regulations.
      Instead many people see a complete refusal to even discuss the need for regulation. So we’re stuck, but we don’t have to be.

    This brings back great memories of two of my great friends and I shooting my Ruger No. 1 in .458 Winchester Magnum back in the day. All I can say is wow! The most amazing recoil I've ever experienced. I've shot the .375 H&H and it recoils hard too, but the .458 Winchester Magnum has definitely got it beat. I honestly thought my liver would fall out. We shot two boxes thru it. One box of 300 grain solids & one box of 500 grain solids. Devastating damage to whatever we shot. I was so sore, I could barely raise my arm at the shoulder for several days. It also made driving my stick shift pickup truck somewhat difficult. Shooting that gun was a great learning experience that I will never forget. An awesome teaching experience for the three of us, but one I won't soon repeat.

  • @recoilrob324
    @recoilrob324 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The stock hard red (thin) rubber butt pad on the #1 was actually painful after a few shots, but with the Limbsaver fitted pad it's easy to shoot all you want with the .375 H&H and 300's. Mine wears a 1.5x4 scope which works well with that round. On 1.5x you can shoot with both eyes open like it's a red-dot and the brain accomodates the difference without complaint, then cranked up to 4x you can get some range on it and take advantage of the good ballistic performance. This is the big difference in 'stopper' cartridges....the .375 H&H has a trajectory similar to the 30-06 w/180 bullets so you can reach out and touch things much better than the rainbow-like 458 Win or the like. Great rifle the #1 and great round in the 375 H&H.

    The No 1 Ruger, Bill Rugers favorite design of his entire career and an extremely fitting way to remember Mr. Ruger! I started with he No 1 in college starting with a 220 Swift cal. and have loved the rifles my entire life the last one of bought is in a .257 Weatherby Mag its equally as beautiful as the first one I owned, if you have that special appreciation of fine work and beauty/Art in a fine rifle you do need to own a No1 in your life it gives you a feeling inside that no black plastic rifle will never be able to fulfill and I have nothing against black rifles sometimes in ones life after you have and do own so many black rifles there is an opening for true blued steel, incredibly fine wood to steel finishes and the make one shot count and when you reach THAT point in your life I highly recommend Rugers finest rifle ever produced!

    have had a Ruger No1 in 300 Win Mag for a lot of years. I keep my ammo on my left wrist, and I can shoot that thing pretty darn fast. Dropped a moose with it years ago and have loved it ever since. !!! Just a classic rifle. I did two things with mine. First I added a wolf main spring for faster hammer speed, and the second...probably the most important thing was adding a Kickeez recoil pad to it. What a difference !!!!! Also, not an add-on, but took the ejector spring and lessened it so I can save my brass ( reloading ) What a great rifle !!!!My neighbor has one he re-barreled from a 25/06 to a 30/06, then finally to a .243 with a truck axle schillen barrel. Beautiful wood furniture, flat black barrel, tricked out trigger, wolf mainspring, flat black rings and a 6-24x50 scope and he shoots it at 1,200 pretty darned well. Cool Guns !!!!

    I've been a gun guy all my life, but I was born in the wrong country to be able to shoot some 'fun' guns.
    I owned two 22 cal. riffles at one point and enjoyed shooting at the local outdoor range but I sold them when I moved abroad.
    I feel like I'm able to live my joy of target shooting through you, but it's not just the guns - it's your way of "teaching us" that I enjoy too. - It didn't surprise me when I found out that you are/were a teacher --- a very entertaining and informative one to top!

    Dear hickok45, I regularely watch your videos, and I very often agree with your opinion. This video about the 375H&H was great again. I was lucky enough to be hunting in South Africa, this July/August, where I actually used a Sauer 202 in 375H&H, using a Rhino bullet, 300 grain. I shot anything from Cape-Buffalo, to Wilderbeest, Hartebeest, Kudu, Impala,... using a Svarowvski scope. I shot distances from 50 to 235 meters, which took it pretty much to the max distance. This caliber proofed to be such a great choice, that I do not even think of another caliber for the next trip there. The recoil is not small, but when you focus on dangerous game, you actually don´t feel the recoil at all. Meat damage was surprisingly small. The weight retention was incredible, the deformed bullet showed 299 grain on the scale. I can only recommend this combination on medium or heavy game. Regards from Germany, Klaus

    Mr. Hickok, you will probably never see this post, but just in case... I served as a firearms instructor for my agency for a total of 15 years. During that time I was constantly looking for a “better way” to do shoot so as to provide our trainees with the very best training possible. I discovered in my quest that when shooting a Remington 870 with rifled slugs that if the shooter pulled the butt stock hard into the shoulder and at the same time pulled hard forward on the for-end with the other hand that the apparent recoil and recoil arc were reduced significantly. This is particularly noticeable when shooting in the under arm assault position. I believe that by pulling forward with the support hand that one is absorbing part of the recoil with that hand thereby reducing the recoil felt by the shooter’s shoulder, or in the case of the underarm assault, the shooter’s support hand....

    I found a can't pass it up deal 2 years ago. A gunshop in western Pennsylvania had 5 cerakoted stainless steel Mossberg Patriots in 375 Ruger, pretty close in ballistics, but fits a standard length action. $290 brand new. After sighting it in, some with the lead sled, I got a 3 shot group at 100 yds that measured .55" 270 gr Hornaday sp at 2,850fps. I quickly got it to my gunsmith and put a muzzle break on it. At only about 7 lbs, it was just short of brutal in recoil. Now it's like a 30'06 with 180 gr loads.

I was only 5ft8 and a light weight at 58kg. I soon learned the way to avoid a sore shoulder was to treat this rifle like a good woman, hold it close and give it respect.
