- This classic 1989 performance was videotaped at NightMoves in Memphis, TN during the TARGET 10 year reunion concert. An end of show jam featuring special guests Rob Caudill(vocals / bass) and Shawn Lane on guitar. PRICELESS MEMPHIS ROCK!
When I'm dreaming about being on stage and playing a solo, this is what I sound like.
Yup.
I like how he references the original solo so closely as well as doing his own inimitable thing.
I met him in 87 in a little club in Little Rock Arkansas. The band was called The Willys or something like that. I heard a radio add that he was gonna be playing and I called up my musician buddies. I showed up with recorder in hand, waited till he went on break, asked his permission to record, and permission was granted, and he made several suggestions about placement in order to get the best sound. On every break between sets he came to our table and asked to hear what we recorded to make sure it was coming out ok. At the end of the night it was just me and him sitting at my table talking about music...and the origins of specific instruments...and Charlie Parker...he was big on Parker. An audio recording of at least 2 sets from that night as well as our conversation at the end exists somewhere. I’d love to get my hands on it again. Shawn was one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met in that type of setting. Also...I had been turned on to Shawn by a guy I met in a music store who said he was a childhood friend of his. I told Shawn about him and he verified that he was indeed a childhood friend and asked me for his number, which I gave him. 3 weeks later I moved to Alaska, where I still live to this day.
On a side note, there was a big guitar competition sponsored by a popular radio station around that time period...and the big question all of us were asking before we committed to signing up was “is Shawn gonna be in this?”
Thanks for sharing this story
Thanks for posting this!! Is there any way of getting those recordins?? I'll do pretty much anything haha
thanks for sharing your story.
Yes. I can echo this. I met Shawn a couple of time while attending Memphis State in the 1980s. One of my studio mates was close friend and he brought Shawn to campus a few times and the three of us hung out. His daughter had been recently born. He loved to talk about music. One time we went to a jazz majors' jam session at someone's house and Shawn brought his Les Paul. Permission was granted for him to sit in. He sat on the floor. His time for soloing came and he was ripping out this solo and the dudes were looking around for the source. Our friend had a big grin on his face. Shawn existed in his own beautiful musical space. A one and only. I'm so glad to see his beautiful talent so well documented. Somehow fame and the big spotlight was not part of his fortune. It seems (from the videos) that he was truly happy sharing his insights in these low key settings. A true gift to anyone who discovers him now.
Doesn't surprise me that he was influenced by Charlie Parker. Both were instrumentalists with virtuous chops that could only be overshadowed by their musical creativity
What a devastating performance on the guitar!! Unmatched he was!!
Greatest ever
Shawn is the most amazing guitarist ever.
I just have to agree.
I have that feeling too.
DEFİNİTELY
gary morris, I almost never listen to shred stuff. I still have a point.
Still today, no one is close! He is the GOAT!
those who play guitar always hear these awesome solo's in their heads but dont have the technique to play them... shawn was one of the few who could hear those solos and play them to you without error.... so inspiring to see him just shred from the head and heart :)
Close encounter of the third kind with the ALIEN of electric guitar , unbelievable performance by the GOAT . Miss ya Bro .
The thing about Shawn was that no matter how fast he was going, it was still musical, never just random finger wiggling. Not many guys can play at that speed and do it with soul!
Yeah, that is the beautiful thing about Shawn's playing. He was fast, but so smooth and clear in the same time. Every single note he put out was there for a reason.
bconroy2 If you slowed it right down, it would still sound great. Just great music really.
True God
bconroy2 Agree.
", it was still musical, never just random finger wiggling"
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH NO.
Love how he nails the chordal interlude without using a slide
Amazing
How I wish I would’ve had a chance to see this guy. What a talent.
I've just spent the last half hour piecing my jaw back together after it hit the floor. Unbelievable stuff. He may have gone way too soon, but boy, look what that man left behind for us to wonder at. Just like Hendrix himself.
Shawn Lane is the Alien 200 years in the future of Mr.Hendrix
shawn lane,alan holdsworth,frank gambale,michel cusson,petrucci,eric johnson,steve morse,...........life is good listening to one of them!
We interrupt this performance to inform musicians and music lovers everywhere, that there are no more notes available, ever.
Shawn Lane used them up during this solo.
:)
@Randal Toma think you might be able to share with the rest of us, perhaps?
@Randal Toma please, share it! Please!!
This is one of the best covers of this song I've ever heard.
Yo creo que es mejor que la original de jimy hendrix
The best ever. #oneofone From another planet.
Shawn doing his own thing yet so in the spirit of Jimmy.. fantastic !!
The guitar sets the limit .Shawn Lane... what can you say... one of the greatest musician of all time. And will be for a long, long time.
Shawn Lane is the pinnacle of shred..the absolute top
This man hits the strings in my heart.
cool! a legend covering another legend! and with a les paul...!!!
Shawn and Jimi, two of the greatest guitarists ever!
There have been very few guitar playing human beings throughout musical history who truly, and I mean truly become one with the instrument they are playing. Shawn Lane was one of those few.
Rest in Peace, Jimi Hendrix and Shawn Lane.......they must be playing a great show for God in heaven.
I had the chance to meet and hang out with shawn on a number of occasions as he was good friends with a friend of mine. As fiery of a musician and performer as he was on stage, off stage he was really very soft spoken and humble. Really really nice guy. Such a terrible loss to the world.
"Shawn was by far the best guitarist of all time. But more important than that, he was a great man." (buckethead)
That's just crazy and humanity is sleeping. Shawn Lane was the greatest genius on earth
Hendrix said himself that one of mankind's greatest flaws is that they waste time comparing instead of just taking something for what it is. Remember that he covered this song as well as other covers and performed them with heart, just like any true music lover. I'm pretty sure both Dylan and Hendrix would love this version!
As he compares
Shawn pays tribute to Hendrix by emphasizing Jimi's melodic line's ...play's his stuff between the Vocals...then solo's ..... humility to egocentricity balanced. A stunning performance. . . THIS GUY WOULD and Could DO IT ALL WITHOUT DISTORTION !
Wow, everytime I watch Shawn Lane play I just think to myself "What're you doing? You need to go practice guitar! You're NOWHERE near that good!"
Very inspiring.
Shawn Lane was in a class by himself.
I would have loved to see the expression on Jimi's face if he could've watched this!!
I don't think Jimi would have believed it was impossible to play like Shawn. I see only two variants: either Jimi drops guitar altogether or he drops drinking and starts practicing.
maybe shawn conjured up hendrix's spirit
I think it would have put a smile Hendrick’s face. Shaun, like all rock gods, are kind of Jimmy’s offspring. And what father doesn’t want to see their children surpass them?
Proud to say I was at this show
Randy and Shawn in heaven,i will buy tickets.
this is kind of like watching Marty McFly playing his solo guitar at the Under The Enchanted Sea dance with Marvin Berry, Shawn Lane was was way ahead of his time
The most underrated guitarist of all time, R.I.P he was playing like this at 13yrs old !!!! sad but he's with God now.
So do you think he improved from age 13 to 40?
@@commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426 Shawn's skill curve was tragic - due to his psoriasis, his speed and technique didn't get better but worse.
@@nikolakaravida9670 Absolutely no!, his musicality only improved and he was much into Indian music during his later life
Look at his last performance at smilefest, he still had amazing speed
@@ayandey137 I didn't say Lane got slow, he got SLOWER, still crazy fast for us mortals. Lane himself said that psoriasis is affecting his playing as his joints got stiffer.
I feel very sad for three reasons:
- he didn't have the success he deserved
- I didn't have the chance to see him live
- I couldn't talk to him, everybody say he was a genious and a wonderful person
people like him, like Buckethead said, never actually die.
He could be alive today if the US had universal healthcare.
@k1000 Not true what?
@k1000 Then why did he see a doctor every time he went abroad? He had the wrong medication, I have been told.
@k1000 You knew you knew nothing, but still you knew. Huh? Proof? You just proved yourself wrong.
@k1000 US still doesn't have universal healthcare. Only rich country in the world that doesn't. What are you talking about?
Imagine being one of those hot shit players in the late 80's like George Lynch, Warren D., Jake E. Lee,,... whoever.....you go to the hotel bar to relax after your gig, and you see this. Gotta take you down a peg.
It’s the same alert when Pete Towshen if the Who and Eric Clapton in the sixties listen to Jimmy Hendrix in a London concert. They all want to give up to play guitar.
Damn, the sound is amazing!
Legendary. All the little details are stunning.
Freakin`awesome !
I hope he rests in everlasting peace...
We must keep Shawn Lanes legacy alive, all true geniuses get recognition very late, usually after their death or even much later, the world needs to know of the greatest guitar player that ever lived!
The real King. RIP
He wasn't very well known outside of musical circles, but you are right: he was "The real King." Sad that such a great talent was never exposed much to the world.
Shawn’s like “your kids are gunna love this”
I hope there were some guitar players in the crowd who were dumbfounded
Holy shit. This is the first cover EVER of this song that does justice to Hendrix. Hats down boy.
@@datguitarplayer1656 i have no idea
what a master he is
Funtimes w/ShawnLee were worth it
Saw Shawn Lane when he played in Out of Bounds. My head just about exploded! We all miss you!
There will never be a guitarist better than Shawn Lane!!!!Let's just leave it at that ☘
What a fucking treat it must of been to watch him live. I envy you people
If there ever was an immortal god walking across the earth with a guitar strapped to his back it would have been Shawn,R.I.P man..
Shawn was more than a musician I considered him a friend as well. A studio was opening here in midtown. Got an invite to come set in for the all day jams. Carried my Steinberger L2 Bass. Jammed for a while. Shawn showed up. We jammed for a few songs & finally the drummer & I just gave in & Shawn wailed for probably 35-40 minutes. Looked like a backwoods bumpkin cause my jaw just hung open most of the time while I just shook my head. Thanks Shawn....
As the original was not enough for melting faces...this is how u shred kids keeping the original soul and doing ur thing
there are no words to describe Lane.
most people have not heard of shawn lane but most successful guitarrists have heard about him if not obsessed over him for a while. lots of incredible guitarrists such as Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Kiko Loureiro, Jeff Loomis, and several others have all said on more than one occasion that Shawn Lane was the best who has ever lived.
I have never seen anything more impressive than this.
Shawn was 26 here..... that is inSANE!!!!
WHY DOESNT THIS VIDEO HAVE FIVE STARS?!?......well...it should have six stars.....maybe a million...definitely a million
Shawn was amazing... I don't know if I've ever heard someone nail hendrix as note-perfectly as he does. And THEN he goes into crazy mode!
So true. Overall the virtuosity and musicality he displays here is mind-boggling.
Best soulful shredder ever. Just jaw-dropping playing. :D
Straight up Beast!!! Would'nt even pick up a guitar around Shawn Lane!!! Smokin Tone and Shred Fever as he burns up this Classic!!! Yeah I know Shawn plays for the Almighty now..What a Phenom!!! Rest in Peace Brother as I know you are..
Best cover ever .R.I.P
HOLY shit i was only 1 when he played this i wish i could be as good as lane... rip man you will be missed
Definitely indulgent is what you need to appreciate Shawn Lane Memphis TN
LEGEND
This guy's sweep picking is fucking out of this world!! Whoaa Buddy!! Just found out about this guy a half hour ago. Very impressive. It's always a treat to hear somebody who's so passionate about their gift.
At that 3:06 section that's some of the fastest runs I've ever heard. So impressive.
You know Shaun has been gone for a decade or so? RIP Shawn.
Where is sweep picking. I don't see any where. Basically he doesn't use sweep picking.
What is the sweep picking? Tell me.
Yamada Taro
It's an arpeggio thing where you sweep the pick across the strings, and you fret each string at the exact moment the pick hits the next string. He's doing it here with the wah wah peddle.
Thats as good a rendition you will see...ever. It had everything.
We miss you Shawn !!!
Always wanted to heard Jimi Hendrix on a Les Paul and yes it sounds just as awesome! Nice touch with tapping the „slide“ part!
This a great version of this piece. Rob Caudill has a great rock voice. Shawn Lane!!!
What is it about Memphis that produces the most amazing, unique and creative musicians this planet has seen. All major cities have oustanding musicians but this town has produce some of the most unique talent the world has seen. No matter what the genre is. Memphis musicians always seam to work there way to the top and retain a very unique presence in popular music. Shawn Lane,Larry Lee,Eric Gales,Al Green,Issac Hayes, the Bar-kays,the Newborne Brothers,Justin Timberlake,James Williams.Kirk Whalum, Three 6 mafia, Memphis Slim, Jazzy Pha, Stax and Hi record companies It goes on and on and on. Elvis was only a Very Very small tip of this iceberg! I love this towns musical heritage even if the people that live their don't realise what they have given to the world.
Exposure to ALL the musicians. It's a cycle. Musicians flock to each other, and the kids in memphis are either related to or are exposed to a massive amount of music as kids, therefore creating more music to expose more kids to.
When you listen to all these speed guys, it gets a bit you know...and this guy comes out and this is good, well balanced, and very natural...just like Jimi, very awesome, face melting awesome, even Jimi would lift an eyebrow to this!
Great feel to the guitar lead licks...
Be well, happy, and peaceful.

Shawn Lane - excellent guitarist, it's 2015 and I just heard him. Fantastic. Thank you Shawn and band and whoever recorded this.
brings tears to my eyes. shawn was so unique in his own style but could play Jimi to a T and capture it like Jimi did......amazing...completely out of this world.
RIP SHAWN....
3:16 - 3:20 the microphone was instinctively drawn to the awesomeness before
remembering its job was to record the whole band.
+Le Tigidou hahaha, quality comment right there
Thanks for this. Lots of memories here.
The first time I saw Shawn Lane he was a teenage phenom playing with Jim Dandy. Target was the first band that ever asked me to sit in. All the guys were very gracious toward me.
2:43-4:04 arguably one of the best solos of all time
the best n accurate cover no one play like shawn lane

I was there for that show.. Was siting up in the balcony...That is Buddy Davis 59 Les Paul he is playing.
Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Shawn Lane are all awsome!
The best guitarrist ever(2)
that's funny mandrilla, cuz that's EXACTLY how I discovered shawn lane. I had to check him out on here after learning (about a year ago) that BH idolized him, and I'm DAMN glad I did.
The most unique version of this song since Jimbo's. Great playing Shawn!!!
I don't think the Les Paul was designed for that, Shawn. RIP.
Guitars are a canvas . Do what thou wilt with them. If you can
Steve Laney No guitars were designed for Shawn's next level playing!
Buckethead disagrees
