Excellent tip! It will fit the rear sight screw, but not the one on the receiver though. No matter: In the field, you'd only be concerned with the sighting anyway.
I picked up the pouch and put it on my A-R7. It is a little tricky to fit properly, but once i got it where i wanted it, i immediately loved it. Its great for holding my extra mags and ammo. Can't wait to take it hunting.

Great advice. I picked up the butt stock pouch and ripped out a couple seams. Using some trimmable velcro I was able to set up the 'end strap' for the pouch so I could attach one end where it was intended (under the pouch) and the other attaches on the outside so I can just pop that strap and open the butt cap. I also rigged a sling using a standard two-point strap to a ring on a single strap around the stock between the pouch and the receiver screw.
16 rounds in the 2 clips that come with it. I was able to put 30 rounds in the ribbing of the stock. There is a video where the person put 48 rounds in the ribbing. I tied 48 but a lot of the rounds were loose and fell out. I order 3 additional clips from Henry. 1 in the stock 2 in a 2 clip mag belt pack I got at Walmart for $3.00. Fastened the clip pack to the stock with Elastic from a pair of suspenders. put a stock pack on the stock which will hold 200 rounds of 22lr. I Can hold 264 to 312 rounds. This will make the gun much heavier and if you drop it in water may not float and the ammo on the outside of the stock will be ruined. I used the 50 round packs which come in the hard plastic container, this give some protection from water and dirt. Thanks for the idea on the carry strap, the rest of the old pair of suspenders.
You can also store about an additional 50+ rounds inside the storage area. The orange “grid” portion can each hold two rounds. So in essence, with that butt pouch, you can hold 260 rounds in it. I use 22 interceptor rounds or the 22 sniper rounds with mine. I like that set up. Im still considering placing a detachable vortex scope on it.

I just inherited this rifle from my Late Father-in-Law's collection. I've known about this model for decades, just never pursued it for my bug-out needs. BTW, my Father-in-Law was a retired Coast Guard Veteran.
According to Armalite history, a mismanaged company all the way. They sold the rights to Colt for a quick profit and Stoner went with it. Stoner it was said designed it for the consumer market with the goal of attracting the military market. I think this is one of the best designs for a back pack firearm as it was originally designed for. Just to show his wisdom and vision.

It is actually water proof. It floats on water. It weighs 2 lbs. I actually got the all steel barrel, a vortex scope and a single point sling. Mark the spot for the scope and it can be popped off and put on. Get a nice protective bag for the scope and strap it on the stock. This can be a day to day gun with the steel barrel.
I have one of those Henry AR-7's. Always wanted one as a kid when they were introduced by Armalite, and finally got one in old age. One big difference in the Henry version is the addition of a 3/8ths scope/sight rail which is nice. One change I despise is the hunter's orange plastic front sight which makes the thing look like cheap, and a toy. Orange parts have long been used on air pistols to distinguish them from real handguns. A metal blade with an orange dot would have been fine, but an orange plastic sight? In my parts box I'm certain I have a front sight which will fit or be made to fit the Henry's front dovetail.
Same with me. I wanted one since I first saw it in a store 30 years ago, thought was very cool. They were only 99.00 back then. Decided to add one to my firearms now. I agree the picatinney rail is a nice touch if you wanted an optic to occassionally use. But the only disappointment is all the orange! An orange front bead is fine but making it so big it sticks out like a sore thumb and completely blocks your target view at any thing but close ranges is bad planning. Also having the entire interior of the buttstock where everything is stored bright orange makes it very cheap looking and unnecessary. Basic black wouldve been fine while keeping the gun looking more classic, tactical and like a real gun! You're right, all the orange makes it look like a toy and cheapens what is otherwise a great rifle. In an attempt to make changes and improvements , some companies always have to ruin Something!
I took a dremel and cut the fins out of the orange plastic under the butt cap. I can fit about 60 rounds in there as well. I don’t store my mags loaded so there is a possibility to hold more. Granted the ammo will likley fall out when you take the cap off to assemble the weapon, but you will need the ammo any way.
Nice video. Always kind of wanted one, thought the concept was interesting and wanted a compact 22LR back pack/truck gun. Just picked one up a couple of weeks ago because it was on sale for $209. Cleaned it and took it to the range last weekend. 200 rounds and it functioned as well or better than my 10/22. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually seemed to like the American Eagle and Remington round nose lead ammo better than CCI Velocitor HPs. With the CCI, 4 failures to feed and one magazine didn't like 8 rounds (7 were OK). 1 failure to extract with the the American Eagle and no problems with the Remington. Shot the CCI first, so it may have been break-in issues. Trigger is a bit stiff, but I imagine it will get better with use. Accuracy wasn't too bad, about 1 to 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards once I got used to the trigger. Again, the round nose lead ammo seemed more accurate. Thumbs up so far!
Peep rear with bright orange blade front sights. Perfect for a blind old man like me. I thought Id need a low power scope, but I seem to do fine with or without spectacles.

Has any one besides me noticed that the AR-7 is designed for a Lefty? I got a new one recently after the one I had in the 80's disappeared after a move. I put the scope on it and Whoa!-had to almost tilt it 15 degrees to the left to get a line on the scope. Apparently, the barrel, in storage inside the stock, extends all the way to the end of the handgrip, and they chose to put it to the left of centerline (since the receiver bolt has to go through there somewhere) which throws the receiver to the right of center. If you're a lefty, it's real handy.
Not an everyday gun? A lot of people put a lot of rounds thru their AR7! Maybe the key is leaving the gun assembled most of the time. And using standard velocity ammo for plinking. Saving the high velocity stuff strictly for hunting, or "emergency use". Although standard velocity works pretty good for most hunting situations, too! Test all ammo for accuracy and function. I learned the hard way about that!
I had some problems with jamming using standard velocity ammo. Discovered a lot of people hold the clip while shooting. I stop doing this and a lot of the jams vanished. The other two problem I have had deals with a dirty clip, a touch brush and a drop of oil helps. Also make sure all of the round is seated to the rear of the clip before loading the next round. As with the Mosien Nogant stripper clips if the stripper clip is loaded wrong the gun will jam. this is a problem with rimmed ammo and stripper clips. watch a video on loading a Mosin Nugent.
I have one and love mine. I use a single point sling on mine with a Blackhawk wrist strap mounting point. I keep mine with my bug out supplies on thing is I store mine in a Uku gig bag so if I am stopped at a check point they will not ID mine as a firearm while leaving in an evacuation.
A bit of friendly criticism, more light front and center instead of on (or in conjunction with) both sides of you when you shoot your videos. The rifle is very dark and I can barely see it. other than that, great video!
I have had one from 82 still works great, love this gun!!! Barrel on the new one are shit , want hold true !! So my new unit has older barrel, hold true every time !! I use a nylon cord for a sling. That all you need for a light weight gun!!!
I would flip the pouch to the other side. Yes the zipper is facing down, but you shouldn't be reloading loose rounds in a firefight anyways. That should get it out of the way of your arm, and you can still pull off mags with your left hand. :D

father just bought me this rifle. a few things im interested in... 1) what is the but strap pouch you bought for this? I am not finding it online...want to make sure i get the correct size as well if you can remember that 2) i'm very interested in replacing the rear sight with a classic old iron sight...the circle is just not great for me and would prefer a basic old block cut out iron sight that doesn't stop it from being packaged up like usual. 3) to make it more buoyant has anyone considered packaging Styrofoam inside spaces to help with this? While you certainly could, depending on your volume of shooting, popular fixed stock rifles have a greater aftermarket for accessories. The M&P1522 and the Ruger 1022, for example, have more complimentary parts available for them than almost any other guns. Higher cap mags, optics, better slings and so forth. Try the Henry and maybe you'll find it's a perfect everyday 22 and the fact that it breaks down so compactly will just be a bonus.
I understand where you're coming from with that who needs an optic comment but that's also one of those things that just comes down to personal preference
One of the best mods I did to my ar7, I took a piggy bank plug from the bottom of my sons piggy bank, i used a Dremel and I made a hole on the side of the stock, the stock is hollow so now I have over 300 rounds of 22 caliber inside the stock on top of the three magazines. It may not float no more but how many people drop their rifle in water deep enough where they can’t reach down And grab it, go on my channel and check out the mod it’s cool
Good vid, but are you serious? 50 to 75 yard gun? You can shoot a 22 way past that....if you're a good shot and....wait for it.....and have scope. It would be hard without one and that distance. I was thinking it would be cool to have a small scope with quick detach mounts. Even though you couldn't keep it in the stock it would still come in handy
Yeah I'm serious. Any small game beyond 75 yards is a tall order with iron sights. An inexpensive fixed 4X Tasco or Simmons scope would be just the ticket, you're right.
I've always liked the AR7 concept but have always found them very prone to feeding problems. Some have said it's the magazine that causes these issues. I wonder if a more recent made magazine would solve this or is there any design difference in the newer guns that would make them run better?
The Henry's don't seem to have those issues. Mine feeds fine and cycles perfectly even with standard velocity, non copper washed ammo. Henry made the receiver hold the mags a bit tighter and added a spring that sits over the top round to keep them from jumping up. Mine has over 500 rnds through it and I have not had a single failure to feed or failure to fire. I did polish the bolt and inside the receiver with 660 grit wet/dry sandpaper at one point, but only as a preventive measure, because Henry made some over spray with the coating at the factory and I didn't like it's semi rough finish near moving parts. Overall it outperformed my 10/22 which is picky about cheap ammo and had a few failures to fire, due to light strikes because cheap ammo has varying rim thickness. (CCI standard velocity .22lr waxed lead 40 gr target). Happy shooting!
If your rifle isn't cycling it could be any number of things. Give the gun a good cleaning, try different magazines, and yes, different ammo too. Find what works and, by extension, you'll figure out what the problem is. Best of luck.
OH I ENVY YOU SIR my ar7 but plate deformed and falls off edit: the sights suck imo plus it looks wacky to mout a airsoft red dot on it so better with than without edit:2 its a 3/8 inch rail incase you were wondering

Constructive critism concerning your video...why did you wear a black t-shirt ? It was a black background you were showing off a black rifle on! Also, from the very beginning, I did not like the poor lighting set up you have. How about a 3rd light in the middle of your area, so I can see better! I did like your tips and suggestions, but instead of a sleeve pouch and sling, I purchased a small reverse backpack. Plenty of room for ammo, extra clips, small binocs, firestart kit, gloves, etc. and it keeps the rifle from being unwieldy when pushing through brush, etc. Finally, if you can find them, you should carry 20 or so tracer .22 rounds with you, to consider this a true survival gun...if you want to be found, using those at night would attract attention as well as fire or flare!
I agree. With no lighting on the area he was showing, and a dark background, I couldnt see a thing that he was describing. Having a light highlighting the thing your talking about so people can actually see what your doing is Always a good idea.
An excellent video, very well done. However, I strongly disagree with your opinion of this weapon. It's construction and materials confine this weapon to only target practice. It is completely unreliable. Not at all suited for survival food procurement in even the most favorable conditions. Far superior options would be: Ruger 10/22TD, Marlin papoose, Savage 24 or 42, or the well established cream of the crop, the Springfield (CZ) M6 Scout.
I've had nothing but good luck with mine though I agree with your other selections - they're just bigger. For BOB usage, I'd take the Henry. For any other .22 application I'm going with my S&W MP1522.
The more I research, the better the Henry made ones come out. I have finally had the displeasure of shooting a Charter Arms version and was right on board with the bad mouthing they receive, but I'm telling you the Henry ones are in a whole different league, yes they are built cheaply, but that's why they can be bought cheaply. The tolerances are a ton better on the Henry made guns and I have personally put over a thousand rounds downrange with mine with no failures, of course I clean it after every outing, but that goes without saying. Maybe I got lucky and landed a good one, or maybe they are built good enough.
This is made from an aluminum/zinc alloy, only the stock is "plastic". How many Law Enforcement officers protect themselves with plastic (polymer) guns every day, think Glock, S&W Sigma,etc.. Also, the guns that won both world wars were the ones that were cheap to manufacture like the Sten, the M3 Grease gun., and the PPSH. The Israeli Defense Agency even issued a version of this gun to their heli pilots for self defense, in the event of a crash. Do you think they would issue a gun if it was junk? Do yourself a favor and do some research before you make yourself look like a fool.

Must have-why? I remember ordering a Charter Arms Tactical AR-7 19 years ago and leaving the gun and my $75.00 deposit with the FFL and buying a 10/22 instead. I distinctly remember all of the easily lost parts that fall out after one removes the receiver side plate-this gun was not designed to be field stripped! I also remember the front sight that had neither elevation nor deflection adjustment and the rear sight not having both! Then again, I have not been impressed by any of Eugene Stoners designs and own a pretty varied collection of European C&R fire arms.
Qualitywise, the new Henrys are worlds away from the Charter Arms of 19 years ago. That said, these days I'd probably still lean toward the 1022 takedown over the AR7 unless I was ultralight backpacking.

Several of my guns are over 100 years old. After serving 5 years in the USN, and discovering how varied in practicality the US designs are, I went to the dark side when I got out. If my comments can prevent one person from buying this POS, then I have saved them some hassles:)
absolutely not. But if I wanted a take down gun with an optic, it wouldn't be this one. I'd probably go with the 10/22 takedown with a decent 1-4x on it.

While I most assuredly appreciate your safety concern, the reality is that guns don't function well without magazines. That is we need to be comfortable using and shooting our guns safely and regularly. I double and triple checked everything well before I filmed.

I think its funny you bash on putting a scope on a .22, But put a sling on a 4 pound rifle. Hmmmm…. Good video though. Didn't even think about the buttstock pouch.
I didn't bash scoping a .22 - just this particular .22. A quality fixed 4x on a .22 is quite useful. And slings aren't related to weight. They ensure that your rifle stays with you and allow you to use your hands for other things while keeping your rifle at the ready. In fact, I have slings on all my pistols too. You know, just in case.
Yea. I want one of these for when I am out hiking for rabbits and any wild cats I see. Not a fan of having to hold it or put it down anytime I want to do anything ..
Dear God, please stop the ridiculous parade of "Survival Experts" who think this gun is a survival rifle. This is a gimmick gun. Every and I mean E-V-E-R-Y videos shows how the rifle is stored in its stock and all make mention of its ability to Float if dropped in water. Now lets talk about the really important factors - It is cheaply made, subject to damage and or lost parts relatively easily, it has th horrible sights and its most appealing quality would never come into play in a survival situation. No useful firearm is disassembled in survival situation. If you are dropping your rifle in water that you need it to float so you can recover it, you are probably not going to survive because you dont know how to take care of your equipment. This isnt a must have, this is a gimmick rifle that should never be relied upon in a survival situation. If you are serious enough about survival that you take a rifle with you, you are not packing this rifle.
I bought one about 5 years ago. So I actually speak from first hand experience. I would ask you to not recommend garbage to potential customers. You will come across as not very knowledgeable once they see what you recommended
I'm curious what you think would be a good survival gun. My only faults with this gun is its moving parts would be better replaced with a bolt action, and instead of those rubbish sights it would be better with a cheap optic package. But what would you count as a good survival package for the average person?
FlyRiverFly I agree and disagree with you. As for survival it depends on what you are setting your sights on. Small game for example rabbit squirrel or ground hog ( hey if you're hungry you'll figure it out). Do I see this as a primary not in the slightest as I have noticed my charter arms is prone to jamming after moderate abuse and let's be honest if you're in a survival situation you're not going to clean your rifle after every event be it from exhaustion or simply don't carry items for that in sfth situation. I think this rifle is ideal as a trainer for your youngster, defense from wild dogs in a shoot to kill situation ( I am animal friendly but at the end of the day I'm on top of the food chain for a reason), and if you find yourself in a situation where you can't ecscape but have time to assemble to give you a fighting chance. This is not a battle rifle or anything of the sort but for what it is it is a fairly accurate for an open sight rifle that can teach and offer some defense and help keep you fed plus saves ammo on your primary. They are also kinda fun to shoot too

Mark the spot for the scope and it can be popped off and put on. Get a nice protective bag for the scope and strap it on the stock. This can be a day to day gun with the steel barrel.

I have one of those Henry AR-7's. Always wanted one as a kid when they were introduced by Armalite, and finally got one in old age. One big difference in the Henry version is the addition of a 3/8ths scope/sight rail which is nice. One change I despise is the hunter's orange plastic front sight which makes the thing look like cheap, and a toy. Orange parts have long been used on air pistols to distinguish them from real handguns. A metal blade with an orange dot would have been fine, but an orange plastic sight? In my parts box I'm certain I have a front sight which will fit or be made to fit the Henry's front dovetail.

Same with me. I wanted one since I first saw it in a store 30 years ago, thought was very cool. They were only 99.00 back then. Decided to add one to my firearms now. I agree the picatinney rail is a nice touch if you wanted an optic to occassionally use. But the only disappointment is all the orange! An orange front bead is fine but making it so big it sticks out like a sore thumb and completely blocks your target view at any thing but close ranges is bad planning. Also having the entire interior of the buttstock where everything is stored bright orange makes it very cheap looking and unnecessary. Basic black wouldve been fine while keeping the gun looking more classic, tactical and like a real gun! You're right, all the orange makes it look like a toy and cheapens what is otherwise a great rifle. In an attempt to make changes and improvements , some companies always have to ruin Something!
I took a dremel and cut the fins out of the orange plastic under the butt cap. I can fit about 60 rounds in there as well. I don’t store my mags loaded so there is a possibility to hold more. Granted the ammo will likley fall out when you take the cap off to assemble the weapon, but you will need the ammo any way.
Nice video. Always kind of wanted one, thought the concept was interesting and wanted a compact 22LR back pack/truck gun. Just picked one up a couple of weeks ago because it was on sale for $209. Cleaned it and took it to the range last weekend. 200 rounds and it functioned as well or better than my 10/22. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually seemed to like the American Eagle and Remington round nose lead ammo better than CCI Velocitor HPs. With the CCI, 4 failures to feed and one magazine didn't like 8 rounds (7 were OK). 1 failure to extract with the the American Eagle and no problems with the Remington. Shot the CCI first, so it may have been break-in issues. Trigger is a bit stiff, but I imagine it will get better with use. Accuracy wasn't too bad, about 1 to 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards once I got used to the trigger. Again, the round nose lead ammo seemed more accurate. Thumbs up so far!

Peep rear with bright orange blade front sights. Perfect for a blind old man like me. I thought Id need a low power scope, but I seem to do fine with or without spectacles.
I have one and it works as a last option rifle, but I'd just end up using it for small game.

Has any one besides me noticed that the AR-7 is designed for a Lefty? I got a new one recently after the one I had in the 80's disappeared after a move. I put the scope on it and Whoa!-had to almost tilt it 15 degrees to the left to get a line on the scope. Apparently, the barrel, in storage inside the stock, extends all the way to the end of the handgrip, and they chose to put it to the left of centerline (since the receiver bolt has to go through there somewhere) which throws the receiver to the right of center. If you're a lefty, it's real handy.

Not an everyday gun? A lot of people put a lot of rounds thru their AR7! Maybe the key is leaving the gun assembled most of the time. And using standard velocity ammo for plinking. Saving the high velocity stuff strictly for hunting, or "emergency use". Although standard velocity works pretty good for most hunting situations, too! Test all ammo for accuracy and function. I learned the hard way about that!

I had some problems with jamming using standard velocity ammo. Discovered a lot of people hold the clip while shooting. I stop doing this and a lot of the jams vanished. The other two problem I have had deals with a dirty clip, a touch brush and a drop of oil helps. Also make sure all of the round is seated to the rear of the clip before loading the next round. As with the Mosien Nogant stripper clips if the stripper clip is loaded wrong the gun will jam. this is a problem with rimmed ammo and stripper clips. watch a video on loading a Mosin Nugent.
The honeycomb pattern plastic in the buttstock is made to hold spare ammo.

I have one and love mine. I use a single point sling on mine with a Blackhawk wrist strap mounting point. I keep mine with my bug out supplies on thing is I store mine in a Uku gig bag so if I am stopped at a check point they will not ID mine as a firearm while leaving in an evacuation.

There are a bunch of compact 22s out there, the other I'm itching to review is the Ruger 1022 takedown.
A bit of friendly criticism, more light front and center instead of on (or in conjunction with) both sides of you when you shoot your videos. The rifle is very dark and I can barely see it. other than that, great video!

I have had one from 82 still works great, love this gun!!! Barrel on the new one are shit , want hold true !! So my new unit has older barrel, hold true every time !! I use a nylon cord for a sling. That all you need for a light weight gun!!!

I would flip the pouch to the other side. Yes the zipper is facing down, but you shouldn't be reloading loose rounds in a firefight anyways. That should get it out of the way of your arm, and you can still pull off mags with your left hand. :D

For survival only???!!! Bullshit it's a great plinking rifle so I give my 10/22 a break and use my ar-7 for fun. I have shot more than a 1000 rounds so far.

Sorry, it may look like a Picatinny Rail on the AR-7 but it is not, it is a Dovetail mount.

father just bought me this rifle. a few things im interested in...
1) what is the but strap pouch you bought for this? I am not finding it online...want to make sure i get the correct size as well if you can remember that
2) i'm very interested in replacing the rear sight with a classic old iron sight...the circle is just not great for me and would prefer a basic old block cut out iron sight that doesn't stop it from being packaged up like usual.
3) to make it more buoyant has anyone considered packaging Styrofoam inside spaces to help with this?

While you certainly could, depending on your volume of shooting, popular fixed stock rifles have a greater aftermarket for accessories. The M&P1522 and the Ruger 1022, for example, have more complimentary parts available for them than almost any other guns. Higher cap mags, optics, better slings and so forth. Try the Henry and maybe you'll find it's a perfect everyday 22 and the fact that it breaks down so compactly will just be a bonus.

I understand where you're coming from with that who needs an optic comment but that's also one of those things that just comes down to personal preference
One of the best mods I did to my ar7, I took a piggy bank plug from the bottom of my sons piggy bank, i used a Dremel and I made a hole on the side of the stock, the stock is hollow so now I have over 300 rounds of 22 caliber inside the stock on top of the three magazines. It may not float no more but how many people drop their rifle in water deep enough where they can’t reach down And grab it, go on my channel and check out the mod it’s cool

Good vid, but are you serious? 50 to 75 yard gun? You can shoot a 22 way past that....if you're a good shot and....wait for it.....and have scope. It would be hard without one and that distance. I was thinking it would be cool to have a small scope with quick detach mounts. Even though you couldn't keep it in the stock it would still come in handy
Yeah I'm serious. Any small game beyond 75 yards is a tall order with iron sights. An inexpensive fixed 4X Tasco or Simmons scope would be just the ticket, you're right.
I've always liked the AR7 concept but have always found them very prone to feeding problems. Some have said it's the magazine that causes these issues. I wonder if a more recent made magazine would solve this or is there any design difference in the newer guns that would make them run better?
The Henry's don't seem to have those issues. Mine feeds fine and cycles perfectly even with standard velocity, non copper washed ammo. Henry made the receiver hold the mags a bit tighter and added a spring that sits over the top round to keep them from jumping up. Mine has over 500 rnds through it and I have not had a single failure to feed or failure to fire. I did polish the bolt and inside the receiver with 660 grit wet/dry sandpaper at one point, but only as a preventive measure, because Henry made some over spray with the coating at the factory and I didn't like it's semi rough finish near moving parts. Overall it outperformed my 10/22 which is picky about cheap ammo and had a few failures to fire, due to light strikes because cheap ammo has varying rim thickness. (CCI standard velocity .22lr waxed lead 40 gr target). Happy shooting!

If your rifle isn't cycling it could be any number of things. Give the gun a good cleaning, try different magazines, and yes, different ammo too. Find what works and, by extension, you'll figure out what the problem is. Best of luck.
These rifles often do not work or cycle well with subsonic rounds, try buying some higher velocity rounds and see if you still have the problem.

Constructive critism concerning your video...why did you wear a black t-shirt ? It was a black background you were showing off a black rifle on! Also, from the very beginning, I did not like the poor lighting set up you have. How about a 3rd light in the middle of your area, so I can see better! I did like your tips and suggestions, but instead of a sleeve pouch and sling, I purchased a small reverse backpack. Plenty of room for ammo, extra clips, small binocs, firestart kit, gloves, etc. and it keeps the rifle from being unwieldy when pushing through brush, etc.
Finally, if you can find them, you should carry 20 or so tracer .22 rounds with you, to consider this a true survival gun...if you want to be found, using those at night would attract attention as well as fire or flare!

.22 long rifle. It's a rimfire cartridge and the gun probably won't take anything else. Sadly, .22LR is pretty hard to find affordably these days.

In a true survival situation, whether my gun floats or not would likely be the least of my concerns.
An excellent video, very well done. However, I strongly disagree with your opinion of this weapon. It's construction and materials confine this weapon to only target practice. It is completely unreliable. Not at all suited for survival food procurement in even the most favorable conditions. Far superior options would be: Ruger 10/22TD, Marlin papoose, Savage 24 or 42, or the well established cream of the crop, the Springfield (CZ) M6 Scout.
I've had nothing but good luck with mine though I agree with your other selections - they're just bigger. For BOB usage, I'd take the Henry. For any other .22 application I'm going with my S&W MP1522.

The more I research, the better the Henry made ones come out. I have finally had the displeasure of shooting a Charter Arms version and was right on board with the bad mouthing they receive, but I'm telling you the Henry ones are in a whole different league, yes they are built cheaply, but that's why they can be bought cheaply. The tolerances are a ton better on the Henry made guns and I have personally put over a thousand rounds downrange with mine with no failures, of course I clean it after every outing, but that goes without saying. Maybe I got lucky and landed a good one, or maybe they are built good enough.

This is made from an aluminum/zinc alloy, only the stock is "plastic". How many Law Enforcement officers protect themselves with plastic (polymer) guns every day, think Glock, S&W Sigma,etc.. Also, the guns that won both world wars were the ones that were cheap to manufacture like the Sten, the M3 Grease gun., and the PPSH. The Israeli Defense Agency even issued a version of this gun to their heli pilots for self defense, in the event of a crash. Do you think they would issue a gun if it was junk? Do yourself a favor and do some research before you make yourself look like a fool.

Must have-why? I remember ordering a Charter Arms Tactical AR-7 19 years ago and leaving the gun and my $75.00 deposit with the FFL and buying a 10/22 instead. I distinctly remember all of the easily lost parts that fall out after one removes the receiver side plate-this gun was not designed to be field stripped! I also remember the front sight that had neither elevation nor deflection adjustment and the rear sight not having both! Then again, I have not been impressed by any of Eugene Stoners designs and own a pretty varied collection of European C&R fire arms.
Qualitywise, the new Henrys are worlds away from the Charter Arms of 19 years ago. That said, these days I'd probably still lean toward the 1022 takedown over the AR7 unless I was ultralight backpacking.

How to identify commenters with zero credibility.
First, they claim to have "abandoned" large sums of money due to their intense displeasure of the product received. As if this level of "spite" toward the manufacturer means anything what so ever.

Whutever. Have had my C&R for over 15 years, sighted in and gunsmithed many weapons, plus I sight in guns and scopes for others. Over half of my collection is C&R, Combloc and esoteric. Several of my guns are over 100 years old. After serving 5 years in the USN, and discovering how varied in practicality the US designs are, I went to the dark side when I got out. If my comments can prevent one person from buying this POS, then I have saved them some hassles:)

While I most assuredly appreciate your safety concern, the reality is that guns don't function well without magazines. That is we need to be comfortable using and shooting our guns safely and regularly. I double and triple checked everything well before I filmed.

I didn't bash scoping a .22 - just this particular .22. A quality fixed 4x on a .22 is quite useful. And slings aren't related to weight. They ensure that your rifle stays with you and allow you to use your hands for other things while keeping your rifle at the ready. In fact, I have slings on all my pistols too. You know, just in case.

Dear God, please stop the ridiculous parade of "Survival Experts" who think this gun is a survival rifle. This is a gimmick gun. Every and I mean E-V-E-R-Y videos shows how the rifle is stored in its stock and all make mention of its ability to Float if dropped in water.
Now lets talk about the really important factors - It is cheaply made, subject to damage and or lost parts relatively easily, it has th horrible sights and its most appealing quality would never come into play in a survival situation. No useful firearm is disassembled in survival situation. If you are dropping your rifle in water that you need it to float so you can recover it, you are probably not going to survive because you dont know how to take care of your equipment. This isnt a must have, this is a gimmick rifle that should never be relied upon in a survival situation. If you are serious enough about survival that you take a rifle with you, you are not packing this rifle.
My recommendation for you would be to not buy one.
I bought one about 5 years ago. So I actually speak from first hand experience. I would ask you to not recommend garbage to potential customers. You will come across as not very knowledgeable once they see what you recommended
I'm curious what you think would be a good survival gun. My only faults with this gun is its moving parts would be better replaced with a bolt action, and instead of those rubbish sights it would be better with a cheap optic package. But what would you count as a good survival package for the average person?
FlyRiverFly I agree and disagree with you. As for survival it depends on what you are setting your sights on. Small game for example rabbit squirrel or ground hog ( hey if you're hungry you'll figure it out). Do I see this as a primary not in the slightest as I have noticed my charter arms is prone to jamming after moderate abuse and let's be honest if you're in a survival situation you're not going to clean your rifle after every event be it from exhaustion or simply don't carry items for that in sfth situation. I think this rifle is ideal as a trainer for your youngster, defense from wild dogs in a shoot to kill situation ( I am animal friendly but at the end of the day I'm on top of the food chain for a reason), and if you find yourself in a situation where you can't ecscape but have time to assemble to give you a fighting chance. This is not a battle rifle or anything of the sort but for what it is it is a fairly accurate for an open sight rifle that can teach and offer some defense and help keep you fed plus saves ammo on your primary. They are also kinda fun to shoot too

I picked up my AR7 at the local military exchange. Got 2 more mags and a 50 round ammo dispenser. It fits nicely in my BOB. Do carry a XD mod2 45 acp for defense.
