R.I.P. Comicstorian. He'll never get to see Deadpool and Wolverine now. In the video he did about it last month he was so hyped and said "he couldn't wait to see what's the future of Marvel and DC had to offer." 💔
What a great and objective documentary on a show of which I have very fond memories, for all of its flaws. BTW you are totally correct: Rocket Robin Hood totally merits a revival, theme tune and all!
The great thing about 60s Spiderman that the 70s live-action show lacked was Peter's monologues. He had such great comments on the situation. For some reason, the producers of the Nicholas Hammond edition kept him almost silent when in costume. That was the reason I never really liked it. Great job and keep up your good work.
I first heard of and saw Rocket Robinhood last year and immediately realized that the 1960's Spider-Man cartoon was reusing footage (or as was pointed out in this video, stolen model sheets) from Rocket Robinhood.
Season 3 was a disaster in the 1960s Spiderman cartoon series where few episodes were repeated with a lot of dialogues being muted which made no sense.A lot of old comic book Spidey villains sadly did not appear in the original Spiderman series (e.g. Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon,Sub Mariner, Jackal,Mountain Man, Tinkerer, Kangaroo, Dr.Doom, Red Skull, Shocker,Prowler, Boomerang,Hydro Man,etc.). Otherwise 1960s Spiderman cartoon was a good Saturday kids show at that time.
I'll always love this adaptation of the wall crawler, it's simple fun with a unique campy detective feel to it. If there's ever a DVD boxset, best believe I'll be snatching it. And the theme song is one theme I've been wanting to transcribe for big band for a minute. Great video my g!
I've seen more of the 60's Spiderman over the 90's Spiderman during the 90's. Eventually I gave up and expected the 60's version to be on and it was treat to watch the 90's one. That's how much the 60's Spiderman was on all the time during the 90's.
Thanks for this in-depth look. I came up on this show as reruns in the 70s and I always knew there were a whole bunch of episodes that there WAY OFF but I didn’t know why. Those psychedelic backgrounds and endless silent swinging scenes from seasons 2 and 3 were completely baffling to me as a child. Which maybe proves that kids DO actually pay attention to narrative because they would just make me feel WEiRD and there would be no explanation for why anything was there. And then they’d show a season one episode in the random mix and I’d be back on board. I don’t mind “dark” cartoons for kids that don’t always have happy endings but I don’t think half-assed cheap surrealism works. The only thing giving seasons two and three any grounding is actually Paul’s voice work as Spider-Man. He definitely never phoned it in.
I enjoyed the series as a lad in the 1970s, but I did have my complaints, which you covered: * frequent reuse of various animation sequences * dearth of canonical villains in seasons 2 and 3 * inaccuracies! inaccuracies! inaccuracies! I thought that I’d seen the entire series, but I wasn’t aware of the episode with Mary Jane Watson.
I liked the lizardman. Scorpion was also cool. I liked how he uses his tail as a weapon, punching holes in walls with it and even using it as a spring. A lot of jokes were corny but that's part of the charm. I also like how spiderman was drawn. The simple bright red and blue colours with the web design. I hate the dark blue shades they use now
It was phenomenal music (late '60s Hard Bop/Progressive Jazz) compared to what other cartoons were playing at the time!! Look up artists like Ray Ellis, Martha Jane Weber, Kenny Graham and Syd Dale for some amazing scores created just for the show- Ex: Rescue Squad by Syd Dale. These were the waning years of popular jazz as Rock was taking over, so interesting to see the state of music at this time.
4:57 - are you sure that's Bob Harris? It looks like James B. Harris, Stanley Kubrick's producer, and when I googled it, I saw the pic you used is really a pic of James B. Harris, just cropped, cutting out the movie camera and Stanley Kubrick. Amazing video btw
The 60s Spiderman was a total blast to watch and you could tell there were problems with it. Though! I do not understand why Marvel did not completely back the Spiderman TV show just to balance out everything that DC was doing If they would have given their animators the money and licensing rights they needed, they would've doubled their sales across the board of their comic books. The other animated Marvel show is another example of being cheap and short sighted. Because of the way they did the animation as well that probably hurt them in a lot of ways because nobody talks about their original show, which proves the point . They needed to learn a lesson from Disney, who went all out to support everything about his characters and how they looked. I know Disney made movies. But even if they didn't make the shows every week. It would have been worth it because of the fan base it created.

Yeah, '60s Spidey will always be my Spidey. Even with the little trick he does when he catches the falling I beam (which halts his swing, but after a pause he resumes swinging.)
0:54 that's not the design that Jack Kirby made for Spider-Man in fact that's just a repurposed image of Giant-Man from Tales to astonish #51 and while we never saw what Jack Kirby's original design was Steve Ditko drew that design in comparison to his design

The history of this show is such a trip. I knew about the Rocket Robin Hood thing and some of the production problems, but I wasn't aware of some of the other history or the importance of so many of the people involved. And being Canadian and this fitting that weird and incredibly loose definition of "Canadian content," this played on TV for several decades after it probably shouldn't have. Dated it might be, but I loved it. I absolutely loved this style of animation as it was like watching your favourite comic book characters come alive. Many people out there will dismiss these classic cartoons as a lot of stills were constantly re-used and it became repetitive but to be honest I would definitely take these old cartoons over the the cgi influenced crap that they've been making since the early 2000's, it's just so depressing!!! Another great factor about these type of cartoons is the atmosphere that they created, that sinister music playing in the background, it just ramped up the tension. Those little touches make all the difference. I still enjoy watching these, however.......I did lose interest when they started to feature the " Psychedelic " era, they were just dire, we never even got to see the regular villians anymore and the show just wasn't the same anymore. Yes I admit the storylines and actions were questionable, either by the silly villians and even by Spiderman himself. They definitely took creative liberties when it came to Spiderman being able to spin any kind of object with his webbing, I still remember when he was able to fight & win a sword fight with the villians by spinning himself a perfect looking sword?? But this is a cartoon for God's Sake and not a factual documentary, it's purely for entertainment purposes and it still continues to do that. Shows like this, Johnny Quest, Tarzan Lord Of The Jungle, The Space Sentinels, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, Spiderman 5000, Xmen & The Spiderman series both reboots from 1991, Flash Gordon, Dundgeons & Dragons, He- Man & The Spiderwoman Animated show from the late 1980's, for me, despite their flaws, I still love them, and it's best not to read too much into them, just sit back and enjoy them, for enjoyment's sake.

Our black and white TV could pick up a channel from Canada....audio only because the video was snowy fuzzy. So I would listen to the Spider Man cartoon as if it were a radio show. Put that into an imagination inducing pipe and smoke it.
0:24 - is this man really supposed to be Stan Lee? I know introduces himself as Stan, but looks extremely different how The Man looked like even in Trial of the Incredible Hulk and afterwards.
the 1967 Spider-man cartoon will always be my favorite.I still watch it till this very day and enjoy it.footnote-Paul Soles didnt do the voice of The Hulk from the Marvel Sperheroes cartoon series-that credit was given to Max Ferguson.
When they aired this cartoon in the 1970s (when I was a kid), I always hated the episodes from seasons 2 and 3. The Raplh Bashki ones looked so ugly to me with their dark water-color backgrounds. They were so weird.
Comicstorian passed away? 🤨😮 Sad news man, RIP Benny! I enjoyed his videos. Respect for the dedication, or I may not have noticed if his videos stopped popping up on my algorithm. Big up 🇬🇧
You forgot one amazing fact. Some of the principal Spiderman voice actors were also on Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer. Paul Soles (Spiderman) was also Hermey the Elf, Paul Kligman (J Jonah Jameson) was also Donner the Reindeer Coach, and Peg Dixon (Mrs Clause) played Betty Brant.
I'll never get over the "crazy colors, iced out, acid trip" episode. Such a bizarre but unbelievably gripping series of art, sound, directing, and so forth.
The Shakespeare villain with the gorilla suited gang… perhaps just the thought experiment that says an infinite number of monkeys will eventually type the entire works of Shakespeare 🤪
What about thr background music?? The show's incidental music uses jangling surf guitar, brass lines and jazzy scoring. The first season's score was original by Ray Ellis, with season two and three utilizing other music from the KPM, Capitol, Conroy and Josef Weinberger libraries by Syd Dale, Alan Hawkshaw, Johnny Hawksworth and David Lindup. Great Stuff! This the type of stuff that was used for the old NFL videos. Thee is a bunch of the old KPM stuff on YT.

Dr. Noah Boddy is simultaneously the dumbest and the most genius idea for a cartoon villain
60’s SpiderMan is the Best ever
All you have today is over use of CGI.
THAT TRIBAL BLACK CHARACTER VILLAIN IN SEASON 1 WAS DEFINITELY FULL OUT RACISM!
60's spiderman always rocks 24/7=52' of the year
even the music was cool
We were kids we didn’t need everything to be “real” the facts that it was on tv and it was in color. We loved it and still do.
16:25 nahhh that's wild ☠️😭
BLM supporters wouldn’t be so happy to see this💀
(not that i am not BLM supporter im just saying)
I remember having the 📼 VHS in the 80s as a kid , actually, 1 of my black friends thought it was hilarious 😂
@@MasterofMonkeys16😅🤭
The main villain was an Australian stereotype as well , forget to add that 😅
I'll never get over the "crazy colors, iced out, acid trip" episode. Such a bizarre but unbelievably gripping series of art, sound, directing, and so forth.
The Shakespeare villain with the gorilla suited gang… perhaps just the thought experiment that says an infinite number of monkeys will eventually type the entire works of Shakespeare 🤪
i think the spiderman from 1960's and spiderman and his amazing friends with firestorm and ice man are the best spiderman cartoons
I'd also get the 90s animated show in that group, but great choices
Doctor Magneto is my favourite s**tty villan ever! I would love to see Marvel bring him back and fight THE Magneto!
Electric company is where Morgan Freeman got his start. It seems like he’s been around forever!
Oh definitely. It's my favorite series. But hey, I like the 70s live action series and it's sketchy as hell!!😜🤣😂
🕷I REMEMBER 60'S SPIDERMAN!!! ( & WOODY WOODPECKER😄)🕸
I definitely loved the music. I should make a music category for some of these reviews 😅 Always happy to read stuff like this! Thanks!
Compared to half of today’s crap? Yes. It’s cheesy and silly but there are worse things to be.
Pls do spectacular Spider-Man or ‘81 or amazing friends pls please
