@@GrosvnerMcaffrey - I agree with you 100%. I just watched "Die Another Day" a few days ago and really had fun with it. People can crap on that movie all they want, but at least Die Another Day is wildly entertaining at times, whereas No Time to Die is a bleak, dreary, downer of a movie that doesn't at all entertain me, but rather just makes me feel depressed inside.
R.I.P Robbie Coltrane. Valentin is one of my favorite characters. That reluctant ally. Having the shady history with bond but still ending up helping him before he dies in TWINE was pretty cool
My kids grew up in the '90s so we were able to "bond", as it were,, with Goldeneye. We spent many a happy hour together playing the N-64 game and watching the film on VHS.
From a storytelling perspective, Calvin kind of blew my mind talking about how the helicopter theft scene would have been written completely differently in Roger's day (with Bond not appearing, kind of like the submarine-napping scenes in TSWLM) and it makes me have even more respect for the already excellent screenwriting. It's brilliant.
Goldeneye is still my favorite Bond film! Bond was excellent in there, the story was fun, 006 was legendary as a villain and a cool concept to have another agent and Xenia is still the best and sexiest henchwoman. Gave me a few fetishes as well haha!
Goldeneye is my all-time favourite Bond movie. I always say if aliens landed on Earth tomorrow and asked "What is Bond" I would show them the first 30-45 mins of Goldeneye (from the start up to the Tiger being nicked) and that would tell them everything they needed to know.
It's also really cool how this movie plays with you at first. Because at that time, if you didn't know what was going on, you'd probably think that was Timothy Dalton right up to, "Sorry. Forgot to knock."
My intro to 007. Was just a kid at the time of it and the N64 game. Pierce was the perfect bond for the 90s/start of the 00s. Reinvigorated the franchise with fun and explosive outings. Even die another day was viewable cheese, but this and TWINE are my favorites of his 4
Always love hearing David and Calvin’s takes! You guys make it fun and keep it fresh. Eagerly awaiting Calvin’s GoldenEye review and the 20th Anniversary of NightFire video! The Brosnan Renaissance is happening! 🎉
I was a bigger fan than most of my friends when this came out. Being a little older than Calvin, I went to see this in theaters and as literally blown away at the bungee scene. Then when the Nintendo 64 game came out, it felt like a 1:1 companion plus an amazing celebration of Bond in multiplayer. I mean, I got to play as Jaws
Goldeneye was definitely my favorite bond movie and the movie that got me into bond movies. Brosnan was the best bond and will always be bond to me. i also remember playing the n64 game for hours and hours. Goldeneye and the N64 game was my entry to bond 😂
One of the small gripes I have with this movie (even though it's my favorite) is that Ourumov has such a quick and unceremonious end as opposed to the other three who have spectacular deaths. Blink and you miss it.
I always like that. It seemed to emphasize that despite what the character believed, he was nothing more than a pawn in everyone else’s game. The one who should be in charge of the whole operation is just another guy being used.
Great video. I’m surprised you guys said that you didn’t think the song connected to the film. I felt some of the lyrics were directly citing Brosnan - “you’ll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child (his first film in a cinema was GF)/ “you’ll never know how it feels to get so close and be denied (losing the role in ‘86).
How funny. My introduction to Bond was so similar. I saw an ad for GoldenEye64 in a Nintendo Power magazine, went and rented it from Blockbuster - loved it. Asked my parents to buy it for my birthday and they did. Along with it, my mom also gifted me one of the VHS boxsets and my fandom was instantly born. 😂
I'm a sucker for quick endings for characters and not these drawn out fights. The Xenia death for example is a good example of that, she came, kicked ass and then she's out! And you're just sitting there shocked like "Oh, damn, okey...". David mentioned the Safin death in NTTD, which I personally loved. It was quick, brutal, head turned away, multible bullets. There's some satisfactory on making it fast, more realistic and again, more brutal.
Every Bond actor who has had multiple movies has always started off with a bang. Dr No, Live and Let Die, Goldeneye and Casino Royale have all been big deals.
I’ve got to say, the Mario Bros car chase theme aside, I love the Eric Serra soundtrack. The drums playing the Bond theme is very unique and somehow suits the movie theme.
With Goldeneye, and I remember thinking this at the time, even as a teenager, they pitched the tone perfectly. It was as though they were winking ever so subtly at the audience, to say "yes, we know this is silly and fantastical", but didn't take it too far like some of the Roger ones, which were more like NUDGE NUDGE WINK WINK ARCH EYEBROW.
Let's not forget the famous Parker Jotter exploding pen that kills Boris. Every time I pick up my Jotter I think of Bond, it's the little moments in life.

You guys are both great, love your videos. Goldeneye is Brosnan's best Bond film. At almost 70 I am of the Connery generation - older than David as he is to Calvin. So there is something that was the first thing I noticed about Goldeneye that no one ever mentions. OO7 has a blond haired partner, they are separated, the parter feels betrayed and returns as the villain... I know Napoleon Solo was a bargain basement Bond... but I always felt that at some point someone had an idea for a Man from UNCLE movie with Illya Kuryakin as the villain. Hey, it could happen, they made Mr. Phelps the bad guy in Mission Impossible after all. So someone had this UNCLE idea and then decided "No, that's too good, let's use it as a Bond movie." That may be a common idea that I've just never seen anyone mention, but it is what I think of every time I see Goldeneye.
You're so right about the richness of Bond movies. I'm totally on board with the concept. I can't watch CR or OHMSS like anytime, but only on special occasions. Because they are so great.
I feel GoldenEye is the Gen. X and Millennial generation's Goldfinger. There is a "play the hits" quality to it in following the Bond formula to the T, but there are plenty of new elements which make it a fresh and fun experience for the franchise. Its a really great debut Bond film for Pierce Brosnan.
David, you also blew my mind with your brilliant analysis of Natalya and Boris as characters who get the opportunity to tell you so much about who they are. The bit about Boris having red tape on his glasses 🤯🤯🤯🤯
I saw this movie in a personal marathon of all the movies I had zero nostalgia for it or any of the Bond movies and this is the best of them all Everything that every movie tries to achieve is firing on all cylinders in this movie It’s simply perfect
Thanks David and Calvin you picked out everything that makes Goldeneye a classic Including the supporting cast and characters and how well they are introduced what they go through and how they end up. Its not just about Bond but with Brosnan you get what worked with Connery and Moore and what worked and didnt work with Timothy Dalton and Lazenby. Can't believe some fans don't like the beach scene maybe they weren't ready for Bonds failings as a human being to be exposed. Its whats keeps me alive.. no it's what keeps you alone. Thats said more about the character than anything that went before. You also nailed why we don't always watch the ones we rate highest the most fir me it's all about keeping them special by not overwatching. Im the same with Spy Who Loved Me and Goldfinger.
Calvin must be close to me in age because Goldeneye the game was also my introduction to Bond. I had heard of him beforehand but never watched any of the movies. My first Bond movie in theaters was Tomorrow Never Dies, and the first one I saw on TV/rental might've been Moonraker.
Great discussion. This was my first Bond movie in the cinema. There was so much hype, and it more than delivered. I joined the James Bond International Fan Club shortly after.
The dream team!! Great vid as ever! I lived on N64 goldeneye (and nightfire) as a kid! Although I love it I also don’t watch it as much as some, reason for me is the overall visual darkness of the locations, the whole cold grey Russia vibe. Too dark and cold for too much of the film. I remember seeing it in the cinema which was amazing, specially the pts (where the skydive stunt got a few laughs). DB5 vs 355 in the hills above Monaco….probably my fave part!!
I love these debates. My introduction to GoldenEye was as a fan born in the late 90s who loved Casino Royale and Skyfall so then worked from Dr. No onwards, so GE was probably one of the last Bond films I saw for the first time. Loved it ten years ago and love it now, although on my latest Bondathon, Tomorrow Never Dies overtook it to become my favourite Brosnan Bond film. Can’t wait until the next debate - Diamonds are Forever, perhaps?
The song is weird (even for Bond) because of the line "You'll never know how I watched you from the shadows as a child," which strikes me as Bond getting addressed by a movie fan. Thank you, Calvin and David, for your love for Scorupco as Natalya. While we're talking about how cool it is to drink with your boss, can we talk about the informal efficiency of this? "I want you to find out what GoldenEye is, what they plan to do with it, and stop it." For those of us who are fed up with bureaucracy -- in other words, the human race -- this is pure bliss. I like Jack Wade because he's a full-on Yank, but a good Yank, not really the Sheriff Pepper that David worries about. (I would now like to take a moment to savor Xenia's breathless realization "He's going to derail us ... !") The way David feels about this reminds me of how I feel about the 2017 Wonder Woman, which I saw thirty times in the theater -- it's such a big rich experience that nowadays it's hard to sit down to all of it on a whim. Perhaps the answer is to find excuses use this as the movie with which to personally introduce others to Bond. Let's bring back Brosnan one more time!
Love GE, my only nitpicks with the flick is who was stealing the Admiral’s ID during Xenia’s Snu Snu kill and who was with Xenia when stealing the Helicopter
What can I say about Goldeneye? I popped the proverbial cherry with that one, it was the first Bond film I ever saw, aged 6 or 7, and I never looked back. i just love pretty much everything about this film, and it's only very recently that I've started ranking it below the #1 spot, but it has never left the top 5 or nor will it ever, me thinks. I'd just like to say that this was once again a great video, Calvin and David, and thank you for pointing out that not only does Goldenye have one of, if not the best ensemble cast of any Bond film, but that each and every character's introduction is just pitch perfect. This is something that goes a long way in crafting a compelling film, and while Casino Royale also did it to perfection thanks to that Martin Campbell magic, other Craig films struggled in that regard (looking at you, Madeleine Swann and Franz Oblofedlhauser...) and never quite recovered from it.
I liked the techno music. At the time, one of my favorite soundtracks was The Living Daylights because it was Bond with more modern style of music, and not just that but the music I was really into. But it was even better!! Because the upbeat techno music was backed up by a beautiful orchestra. I saw this with a group of newly made friends, out for the night, and I was on a semi date, kind of a group thing, but had the girl sitting with me and we were just getting to know each other. Made for an amazing time because that just added to the excitement of the night, and the new Bond movie. None of them knew what a Bond freak I was. Later that week we all went together again to see Toy Story in the theater. Amazing times for movies back then!! I did not wind up dating the girl, but it all made Goldeneye just that much more fun for me!
Great video and talk as always! But I want to say: we can agree on the DB5 music scene that is awful, and the score replacement on the tank scene, but the rest of the Sierra score is awesome, is fully on point with the mood of the movie, from the gunbarrel (one of the bests ever) to the piano melody when 006 reveals himself as Janus and so ever.. It's the movie signature, it's so unique and recognizable!!!
This discussion only makes me love the film even more.. I had never thought about HOW much time they give Natalya before she meets Bond. As Calvin says, we've only ever seen this before with For Your Eyes Only. This is something which is missing from the Craig Bonds, where they played so heavily from Spectre onwards, on, "these are Bond women; not Bond girls!" Natalya has a job, a work colleague/friend, at some life before Bond.. Her value and existence doesn't pull into focus after meeting him. *I must add though, i'm a little surprised David didn't mention is so much detail the yacht door opening scene.. Which is something I have adopted in my day to day life, opening sliding doors like i'm Bond.
crazy detail! the first time we see 006- Trevylian, he steps from the shadows and when he catches more light, the left side of his face is most noticeable. when Janus- Trevylian reveals himself to Bond, the right side of his face is most noticeable, which is the burned side, while he steps from light. that to me is a very cool little detail and nod to his name Janus, how Bond mentions; "the two faced Roman god".
I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene where Janus is revealed. Great movie, i can imagine with a better score it would feel even better. I saw it twice opening weekend. In the saturday night showing by the time Xenia came on screen at the train yard the audience clapped.
Absolute favorite Bond film of the entire franchise. It accumulates everything in the world of Bond into one exceptionally made meal. I love the score, I'm a fan of Eric from his works with Besson-save the tank chase ofcourse. Have you talked about XXX? I know it's a Diesel movie but it's influenced by Bond and I find mostly Brosnans Bond films. It would be interesting. RIP Robbie This film fully excels in that it's a memorable ensemble of characters circling James who are more that types
This film has the exotic Russian espionage feel shades of FRWL with the 90s early technology world of today this was Old Style Bond transitioning into the more tech Bond films of now and I know Bond has always been cutting edge technology wise but the newer films have tech we all use or experience in our lives
I could have listened to 2 more hours of this. Im pretty much 100% with calvin on all of this. Pretty sure its a thing for guys our age but the n64 game was my first proper introduction to 007 and i dumped hundreds of hours of my 6th and 7th grade year into that.
I think the tone of the game matched the movie; which is something I find very difficult to put into words, but the feel is there. Also, check out : "The Critical Drinker's" Bond list...wasn't quite sure when I saw it originally, but found myself agreeing with it.
Yes and interestingly Martin Campbell directed 2 of the best recent fight scenes in recent Bonds but after both movies the fight scenes became lightweight affairs.
@@markholohan4446 I also think some of them did not warrant it story wise, and others I think the directors were not that good in hand to hand combat filming as well
I am exactly the same. GoldenEye is definitely my favorite Bond movie, but it is one of the ones that I watch the least. It's like GoldenEye is a special occasion. Watching it more would almost rob it of it's specialness for me. That is also the case with some of my other top-tier Bond movies (Goldfinger, Casino Royale)
I honestly think Calvin has the most on-point appraisals of the franchise. + Agrees that _Tomorrow Never Dies_ isn't the best but is probably the most rewatchable film (or thereabouts) + Recognizes Martin Campbell's genius with _GoldenEye_ and _Casino Royale_ and playing to both Bond actors' strengths, not to mention wanting to be in the "right mindset" to appreciate them properly + Has come around to _Die Another Day_ as the fun romp it was intended to be + Dislikes _Thunderball_ and _Never Say Never Again_ as much as me + Has a soft spot for _Moonraker_
I must say, David isn't alone having played TND more than GoldenEye N64. I had PS1 growing up, and that's the only Bond game I had. Never was able to play GoldenEye N64 as other consoles were more popular growing up in my area.
i need to rewatch casino royale as i hated it the first time i watched it. i was never a fan of daniel craig's version of bond but i did come around a little on craig when i watch skyfall spectre and no time to die. but to me brosnan is my favorite version of bond. he was the best all around bond with his wit charm and he knew when to be deadly. goldeneye is my favorite bond film .
I definitely played GoldenEye 007 on the N64 before I was really allowed to watch the movies (cause he's not big on consent). And I KNOW I saw it after I played it because I was doing the Leo DiCaprio point and yelling stuff like, "Dam! Facility! Runway!!" But I know that I saw The World Is Not Enough before I played its N64 adaptation. I liked Pierce Brosnan as Bond, but I like Daniel Craig's movies more. With that said, I get the sense that David's not particularly big on video games - I might be wrong about that. But I'm VERY curious to see what he would think of the Daniel Craig GoldenEye re...boot(?) game's storyline. Not gonna lie, the game itself kinda pissed me off because I felt like my nostalgia was taken advantage of for the sake of selling me a fucking Call of Duty game.... but I didn't hate the story of it.
I'm a huge fan of Goldeneye and Pierce Brosnan is amazing in his first Bond role, I feel he was just born to play the role. The pre titles has not just 1 amazing stunt but 2, the title song is brilliant and Tina Turner was right female singer to do it. The film as a whole tho is a 9.5 for me just brilliant.
If you guys were stuck on a Tropical Island fir a week and could bring one Bond movie with you to watch which one of these do you chose out of these Choices 1 Casino Royale Spoof 1967 2 Never Say Never Again 1983 3 Die Another Day 2002 4 No Time To Die 2021 My Pick is Die Another Day at least you can have fun with this one
I remember being so hyped for this when I first saw the trailer. I tracked down the version of the Bond theme that was in it. I found the CD and bought it but I lost it lol. Does anybody remember who did that version? Was that Moby's version?
After the uber-depressing conclusion of Daniel Craig's era, I am bigtime nostalgic for the Pierce Brosnon era now. Give me Pierce's Bond anyday!

About time you and Calvin did another Bond debate! It's been too long. You two have great chemistry and fun discussions about everything Bond.
Not just my favourite Bond movie but my favourite movie.
DB5 vs 355 in the hills above Monaco….probably my fave part!!
how can Goldeneye song not be in your top5?!😳
I love these debates. My introduction to GoldenEye was as a fan born in the late 90s who loved Casino Royale and Skyfall so then worked from Dr. No onwards, so GE was probably one of the last Bond films I saw for the first time. Loved it ten years ago and love it now, although on my latest Bondathon, Tomorrow Never Dies overtook it to become my favourite Brosnan Bond film. Can’t wait until the next debate - Diamonds are Forever, perhaps?
My school bus driver had a bottle of liquor under his seat.
Two hours please🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hehe I was just watching your discussion on die another die when this popped up. Yes please!
Let's bring back Brosnan one more time!
calvin and david videos are the best 🎉
Did you guys know that the goldeneye theme song was written by Bono and the edge?
We love Calvin Dyson!
Love GE, my only nitpicks with the flick is who was stealing the Admiral’s ID during Xenia’s Snu Snu kill and who was with Xenia when stealing the Helicopter
Another question about the TIGER.....
It's a 2-man helicopter. So how did Boris escape??
Great discussion, baby! ^_^
This discussion only makes me love the film even more..
I had never thought about HOW much time they give Natalya before she meets Bond. As Calvin says, we've only ever seen this before with For Your Eyes Only.
This is something which is missing from the Craig Bonds, where they played so heavily from Spectre onwards, on, "these are Bond women; not Bond girls!"
Natalya has a job, a work colleague/friend, at some life before Bond.. Her value and existence doesn't pull into focus after meeting him.
*I must add though, i'm a little surprised David didn't mention is so much detail the yacht door opening scene.. Which is something I have adopted in my day to day life, opening sliding doors like i'm Bond.
Just glad the Ellie is very excited
crazy detail!
the first time we see 006- Trevylian, he steps from the shadows and when he catches more light, the left side of his face is most noticeable.
when Janus- Trevylian reveals himself to Bond, the right side of his face is most noticeable, which is the burned side,
while he steps from light. that to me is a very cool little detail and nod to his name Janus, how Bond mentions; "the two faced Roman god".
This will go live on my birthday, that's nice :)
Brosnan is the easiest one to imagine for me when I read some of the Bond books. ❤
My favorite Bond film
I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene where Janus is revealed. Great movie, i can imagine with a better score it would feel even better. I saw it twice opening weekend. In the saturday night showing by the time Xenia came on screen at the train yard the audience clapped.
Nice work guys! x
I love the movie. Love the French style to his clothes also
Enjoyed the vid. Will watch Goldeneye tomorrow. I preferred Mr Brosnans Bond to the later one
RIP Robbie
This film fully excels in that it's a memorable ensemble of characters circling James who are more that types
Goldeneye did start off as a SNES very early in development. Still waiting for the Xbox One/Switch re-release
The second bond film I saw in the cinema. He is my third favourite bond as well.
Love these gents!
I differ on one thing. Goldeneye is definitely one of my go to Bond films. I rarely if ever watch the other 3 Brosnan movies.
This film has the exotic Russian espionage feel shades of FRWL with the 90s early technology world of today this was Old Style Bond transitioning into the more tech Bond films
of now and I know Bond has always been cutting edge technology wise but the newer films have tech we all use or experience in our lives
Great video! Goldeneye is a very good movie!
Also, check out :
"The Critical Drinker's" Bond list...wasn't quite sure when I saw it originally, but found myself agreeing with it.
Defo my No1 Bond in one of the best movies ....
1:07:00 one of the best fights in the franchise. I think it actually rivals the Red Grant fight from From Russia With Love
+ Agrees that _Tomorrow Never Dies_ isn't the best but is probably the most rewatchable film (or thereabouts)
+ Recognizes Martin Campbell's genius with _GoldenEye_ and _Casino Royale_ and playing to both Bond actors' strengths, not to mention wanting to be in the "right mindset" to appreciate them properly
+ Has come around to _Die Another Day_ as the fun romp it was intended to be
+ Dislikes _Thunderball_ and _Never Say Never Again_ as much as me
+ Has a soft spot for _Moonraker_
I admit, I went to the theater w/sole intention of tearing CR apart (as I did w/DAD).
BUT I LOVED IT.
Graeme Norgate is a great gaming composer. The Timesplitters soundtrack had an excellent soundtrack with his work.
Oh god, when Natalya bitch-slaps Boris, and there's that beat when they all just... admire it. I laugh like a drain every time, it's the best.
Great episode
I definitely played GoldenEye 007 on the N64 before I was really allowed to watch the movies (cause he's not big on consent). And I KNOW I saw it after I played it because I was doing the Leo DiCaprio point and yelling stuff like, "Dam! Facility! Runway!!"
But I know that I saw The World Is Not Enough before I played its N64 adaptation.
If you guys were stuck on a Tropical Island fir a week and could bring one Bond movie with you to watch which one of these do you chose out of these Choices
1 Casino Royale Spoof 1967
2 Never Say Never Again 1983
3 Die Another Day 2002
4 No Time To Die 2021
My Pick is Die Another Day at least you can have fun with this one
fan fact GoldenEye was going to snes but was on the N64
1:11:54 he says “There’s no one within 25 miles, BELIEVE ME.”
The Soundtrack for the car scene are dredfull yes. But the rest of the album are lovely, Specially The Track Fatal Weakness its so dark and relaxing.
I remember being so hyped for this when I first saw the trailer. I tracked down the version of the Bond theme that was in it. I found the CD and bought it but I lost it lol. Does anybody remember who did that version? Was that Moby's version?
It was Parodi-Fair
Good job guys
