Seriously?!!?!?? I can't believe we're getting this so soon after the Diamonds Are Forever "debate". This is FANTASTIC. I simply cannot wait. Both of your channels are great, but when you two team up, well, it's GOLD!!!
I agree about the Goldfinger plot. Thunderball is my favorite Bond film overall, but the Goldfinger plot is either the best or one of the very top tier ones in the Bond Series.
My favorite Bond film and my second most favorite movie of all time. (Raiders of the Lost Ark). This is the movie that made me a lifelong Bond fan. And I LOVE Dawn Raid at Fort Knox. One of my go to soundtrack cuts. Please don’t hate me.
After rewatching all Sean Connery Bond movies, i find Goldfinger on the top of my list from SC as an actor. Complete Bond movie, got it all what it needs to be perfect! Style, Class, Locations, Girls , Poker, Drinks, Cars , real espionage !
28:48 yeah, the 1st 3 films weren't in wide-screen. I saw Goldfinger on the big screen and then Thunderball at the cinema the next day - there was a big difference.
So great to see you guys back together. Especially so soon after there was quite a gap between The World is Not Enough, and Diamonds Are Forever. Looking forward to giving this a watch.
That's incredible, I was literally just revisiting your Thunderball debate! Great discussion lads, really good points all around. I had no idea Calvin could do a decent Connery impression, that was very good! The thing about the long sequence where Bond is held prisoner, it appears that Goldfinger holds all the cards. We don't necessarily know how Bond is going to get out of this, so the stakes are raised.
I love Goldfinger. Movie and the villain alike. This type of evil plan - he wants to do something unspeakable to boost the gains of his legitimate business - is probably my favourite film plot.
David, it’s Ken Adam. Not Adams. Thankfully Calvin kept getting it right. Very very very enjoyable episode with you both. “ Do you expect me to say Ken Adam ? No Mr Zaritsky, I expect you to die “
I LOVE the soundtrack to this film. I love the big brass sound. It is so bombastic, so Bond-like. It's the best of the lot. Everything about this film is pure comic book and it just hits the right notes throughout. Not just the music, but the lighting, the color, the opulence, the characters. It's pure pop corn gold. There is no other Bond film that is as iconic as this film. Having said that, it doesn't make my top ten list of Bond films!
I wanted to watch you and Calvin today, but there was so much going on in my house. I finally got to see the both of you, and it was fantastic! Goldfinger has always been my favorite Bond film, even though I know there were more polished Bond films. But it is just so much fun to watch, no matter how many times I have seen it.
Nostalgia. If you're David's age or, like me, older (DOB 1961), nostalgia is expressly or implicitly a factor in any discussion of Bond films. The first five are absolute time machines that transport us older folk back to a place in time that is no more, but which we fondly remember. Goldfinger, of course, is in that category.
Used to watch this the most of the 007 movies when I was young. Despite a few questionable logic gaps, it remains a classic quintessential watch. Will be fun to watch the discussion.
Wow this was such a amazing suprise and it was brilliant as always from you both, your such huge bond fans and my favourite you tubers, keep them coming guys
The way I see Goldfinger is, it has absolutely the best theme song and title sequence, that part is - there is only one word - outrageous - and it sets up the film so well. Goldfinger does live up to the song - he's outrageous. He is my favourite Bond villain, funny, charismatic, ruthless. His henchman Oddjob is outrageous. He's my favourite Bond Henchman - the way he crushes that golf ball - pure cinema. Pussy Galore - just the name is outrageous and she is one of my favourite Bond women, after Fiona Volpe (2) and Tracy (1). She's charismatic, competent, cool and with the perfect sprinkling of arrogance. Bond's car is outrageous. I was 7 when the movie came out and I, like every boy I knew, had a Dinky model of it. That idea, of an ejector seat - outrageous. Connery as Bond here is charismatic. It's his most difficult role as Bond since for half the movie he's a prisoner. But even then, he constantly takes the initiative and ultimately defeats Goldfinger via his hold on Pussy. He is also confident, cool and charismatic. The Ken Adam sets - he'd outdo this movie in You Only Live Twice but none the less, it is pure style. It is the ultimate James Bond movie. It is not my personal favourite but everything in Bond hangs of just two movies - this one and Dr No. Of the two, this in my mind makes the greater contribution. I agree with you entirely, for me the best of Bond is pure fun. I happen to think of OHMSS as fun, though - yes it does end in tragedy but the journey is so terriffic.
Great discussion, guys. Really loved that. I did roar at the Masterson sister's gravestones! Tragic both sisters dying but the escapist feel doesn't make you think that. It's more a case of, oh she's out of it now, and you think of the actress walking away with her paycheck. Goldfinger is wonderful. Top 3 for me.
Got turned onto both of your channels in the past few months and am hooked. I've been a Bond fan since I watched The Man with the Golden Gun with my mom when I was a kid. She was a Bond fan because she like Connery. Been hooked on Bond ever since. Currently doing my first read through of all the books. Just finished Goldfinger, and I loved it. The books have really been adding to my enjoyment of Bond. Keep up the great work, guys.
My Two Cents: - I can't find a quote but I heard even Guy Hamilton had an issue with the scenes at Auric Stud. The film does grind to a halt after moving at a brisk pace (Like Thunderball! 😝). Things really don't pick up again until the finale but even then, it's not that good. In the novel, it was absolutely chilling to arrive to a town that appears to be dead. In the movie, I just see soldiers fainting on cue. That's why GF doesn't make number one for me. Most of the last third of this movie drags. - Goldfinger is arguably one of the few times that James Bond is actually acting like an agent for an intelligence gathering agency or a "spy". They get information and pass it along and that's what Bond does throughout most of the film. - There's a chilling aspect to Barry's music when the soldiers are being knocked out at Fort Knox. The music sounds emphasizes the fact that to Goldfinger, he's doing as much destruction as a building being erected. The massive loss of life? To quote the man himself: "American motorists kill that many every two years." - I also agree that Auric Goldfinger is the best Bond villain both on a surface level and a substantial level. Physically, he looks highly unusual which is a great thing when you want an actor to play a villain. On a substantial level, you feel the deep resentment Goldfinger has towards Bond. He is well aware of how he looks and he has to pay women in order to be seen with him. When you take that into account, it's no wonder why Goldfinger wants to castrate Bond via laser, it's personal attack. That sort of pettiness, combined with his grotesque appetite for Gold, actually makes him more interesting than the other Bond Baddies that are generally not much more than cloak and dagger. Auric seems more human. I also feel the same about Max Largo from Never Say Never Again. There's a pettiness and humanity their too.
The book mentions something the movie doesn't. Goldfinger made a practice of painting women gold, not to kill, but to pretend that he was literally making love to gold and was sexually satisfied by it. He would pay a woman a thousand dollars to do it, and would not kill them. Jill 's death was a revenge killing.
From Russia was my first bond film at the cinema.saw it as a 10 yr old in 1970 .massive experience.my favourite.been a massive fan ever since.hope ATJ does a great job
I've lost count of the times I've watched Goldfinger and it's never lost its shine. Seeing it at the cinema as a reissue was such a treat. I've also lost count of the DB5 toys I have. You can never have enough Aston Martins. 😊
love the outfit David. I've got Goldfinger vying for number two with From Russia with Love, behind OHMSS. John Barry's score creates the light , fun atmosphere
Strongly disagree Calvin. The transition from the cold open to the title them is perfect. The silence, Connery delivering a joke after almost dying and then BOM BOM! Gooey Pizza! That's one of my favorite Bond moments
My first Bond movie I watched in the 70's and my favourite. My best scene is Bond on the table with the laser pointing between his legs, just the sound the laser makes it so creepy and suspenseful. Also has a great villain Auric Goldfinger, Odd Job, named because he did odd jobs, Pussy Galore. Amazing ken Adam sets of Fort Knox and lots of Gold. Soundtrack is amazing and that Bassey song needs to be bold and brash to match up to the movie. Only downside i can think of is it's not shot in widescreen. Great review you two :)
The strange thing is even though Goldfinger is a masterpiece, I never reach for it like I do many other Bond films. I still enjoy it quite a bit, though.
This was my first Bond film. I technically saw Spy Who Loved Me earlier but i was far too young to follow the plot or know what was going on. This is fhe first movie i remember actually following the plot of when i was like 8.
I do like the book, but you're right. A rare case of the film being better than the book. I think both The Exorcist and Jaws are other notable examples.
Something that was not mentioned, is that Goldfinger is the only Connery Bond that doesn't feature SPECTRE. Auric is his own man; we couldn't see him working for anyone else.
Give Golden Gun some love in the next episode :) It has great villains with unique and personal story relating to Bond, lovely scenery and a lot of fun :)
Cheers guys! In the last few weeks I’ve spotted the bond movies on prime and I’ve watched em all at least once and got into the whole Bond culture etc, and watching you discuss it makes me wanna get into the “cult” 😂 I don’t know if I’m gonna stick to it like that but now I’m gonna be a Bond fan forever 😁ciao ✌️
I remember seeing that car with the gadgets in use as a 7 year old and I was never the same afterward. One of those movies I can't imagine life without...
Regarding the aspect ratio, the first three films are presented in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio, which, at the time, was the European standard theatrical aspect ratio.
Always has been My favourite Bond film because it was My first. My Cousin took me to see it in Birkenhead in the 60's and as we arrived early we waited in the Circle foyer listening to the sound from when Pussy Galore is seduced. That meant I heard John Barry's stunning music cue 'Raid on Fort Knox' and I've been hooked ever since.
Seen Goldfinger so many times, but saw it on the big screen at the Prince Charles cinema back in Feb. Still a great Bond film (if somewhat overrated - it's 6 in my rankings) and surprised how humorous it really is. Everyone at the cinema was laughing at the "Man Talk" scene, a lot of the Miami sequence, Bond interacting with Moneypenny and Q, golf scene, Bond's one liners all the way up to Goldfinger's death. That made my row and the row behind me laugh like idiots! Similar to when I saw Licence To Kill on the big screen a few years back. The darkest, grittiest Bond movie. And yet certain scenes made people laugh!
Great video as always! One thing though: I don't think that's Gert Frobe's real voice in that clip. It sounds too close to Eric Pohlmann, who voiced Blofeld in From Russia With Love and Thunderball.
If you had lived through the release of the James Bond films, you would know that "Goldfinger" had more of an impact than any other film in the past 60 years.
The gold standard (pun intended) of Bond movies by some margin. This along with From Russia with love are the best Bond movies, but Goldfinger has more of everything and goes to the top. The best Bond in splendid form and a memorable villain. Great locations and it doesn't lose pace along the way - Bond doing spy stuff in the beginning, the golf match, the mountain chase and factory in Switzerland, the reveal of the masterplan in Kentucky and the assault on Fort Knox - all great and epic scenes! A clear 10/10
Calvin, you should watch 'Es geschah am helllichten Tage' (It happened in broad daylight), 1958. I'm Sure you know this was Gert Fröbe's 'calling card' for 'Goldfinger'. But his performance herein is really terrifying.
It's matured like a fine barrel of talaska Goldfinger is in my top 5 James Bond Adventures In no particular order Goldfinger Skyfall Spectre The man with the golden gun From Russia with love
36:30 Yeah, she owns him, but then she was raped in the haystack and then she helps Bond ! It is a bit bizarre. I have to admit though, she's a tough cookie and a shrewd business woman, which was a novely in those days on screen. You have some before, like in Johnny Guitar, but il was seldom.
I would have to ask myself why I would suggest this as a first must watch for someone. It would be because of first impressions. Opening sequence, Bond completes a mission, pow, q the music. It has the clothing styles of Bond. It has a good basic villain and henchman vs Bond. Bond converses with M, and Q, and the car is introduced with gadgets. It would leave the person wanting to see the next one. Then I would suggest other ones they are now primed for.
Great commentary from the two most expert Bond aficionados. Maybe we should put in some cutoff for older Bond films vis-à-vis newer ones. Seems unfair to compare for a ranking, a film from 1962 and one from almost 2022. Goldfinger: He’s a great villain. A smart mastermind, without being an all-out psycho like, unfortunately, so many Bond villains. Goldfinger gassing the gangsters: I have always felt that, while Goldfinger was always prepared to kill them, he doesn’t really make a final decision until he gets push back from Mr. Solo. In the film, Goldfinger doesn’t even come back to talk to the gangsters having, imo, just decided that they aren’t worth the trouble.
My nostalgia for this film means I can overlook some deficiencies in the story and thw portrayal of Bond (fails to save the lives of at least two people, getting captured and being essentially inactive for half the film).
Perfect timing, I watched goldfinger 2 days ago. I'm rewatching all official bond films in order over the course of the month. Sorry to tell you this but I do feel goldfinger is massively overrated
I think the whole "Easy answer" sentiment on Goldeneye is right on the money. So easy to like, as it's really the first bond blockbuster. More polished, rich, iconic, etc. Easy to go along for the ride and to recommend. And yet, From Russia With Love remains my favorite of the connery era. That rough, lived-in look, tone, and feel. I think spy thriller, i think FRWL. I'm honestly splitting hairs though. It's either/or whenever i revisit 60s bond more times than not
I r se memb I remember the year 1964 iseen goldmines at the met movie theater in Baltimore this was the first time I had to stand in line to see a movie. A long line with my brother I was nine years old
I completely agree with Calvin in that I can easily find myself reflecting the many criticisms the film gets and going along with the consensus that it's overrated. But when I sit down and watch it, none of those thoughts are in my mind, and I have fun.
As much as I like Oddjob, I think that he is the second best henchman. Red Grant is the absolute best. He literally had Bond on his knees begging for a cigarette. No other henchmen can make that claim.
Seriously?!!?!?? I can't believe we're getting this so soon after the Diamonds Are Forever "debate". This is FANTASTIC. I simply cannot wait. Both of your channels are great, but when you two team up, well, it's GOLD!!!
AGREED!!!
I agree about the Goldfinger plot. Thunderball is my favorite Bond film overall, but the Goldfinger plot is either the best or one of the very top tier ones in the Bond Series.
Well done! A great conversation to kick off the 60th Anniversary of GOLDFINGER!
I genuinely wish these two would set up their own duo channel for more frequent stuff. They are fantastic together.
They should do a remake of The Persuaders.
Keep these “debates” coming, please. 🙏 I love hearing y’all talk about the Bond films. ♥️
Kind of incredible how well this movie holds up 60 years later!
I was so happy to finally see it in a theater a few years ago. They should regularly put the Connery films back in theaters.
The dynamic duo is back! My two favorite Bond reviewers.
My favorite Bond film and my second most favorite movie of all time. (Raiders of the Lost Ark). This is the movie that made me a lifelong Bond fan.
And I LOVE Dawn Raid at Fort Knox. One of my go to soundtrack cuts. Please don’t hate me.
No one should hate you, Dawn Raid at Fort Knox is fantastic and I don't understand the dislike for it.
After rewatching all Sean Connery Bond movies, i find Goldfinger on the top of my list from SC as an actor. Complete Bond movie, got it all what it needs to be perfect! Style, Class, Locations, Girls , Poker, Drinks, Cars , real espionage !
Gin Rummy, not Poker.
My favorite Bond movie for so many reasons.
28:48 yeah, the 1st 3 films weren't in wide-screen. I saw Goldfinger on the big screen and then Thunderball at the cinema the next day - there was a big difference.
That intro was superb!!
Miss Galore is definitely one of the best bond women.
So great to see you guys back together. Especially so soon after there was quite a gap between The World is Not Enough, and Diamonds Are Forever. Looking forward to giving this a watch.

@@tobyhart Ah. Thanks Mr Harts. Or is that Mr Hart …………..

I used to think this movie was highly overrated but the more that time passes the more I grow to love it
Just began watching, but have to say that intro was amazing 🎉

I agree with you entirely, for me the best of Bond is pure fun. I happen to think of OHMSS as fun, though - yes it does end in tragedy but the journey is so terriffic.
I feel like this is the movie where Bond really and finally became a huge part of popular culture. And I wasnt even born in the 60s!
Yeah, that's when the spy craze began.
Apparently it was Dr No.
That intro. The editing of the snare hits with odd job, the breaking of the pencil, and Dink was top notch 🫡
Can't wait for this. To prepare I'm going to watch some of the previous discussions again.
Top work on the editing Joe, and as always a great discussion chaps!
Great film, the blueprint for all Bond films.
Yay! Love this series so much🤘🏼 going through a really hard time right now and rewatching them all and this was a great surprise!
Loved this as I love all of them! Always look forward to these 👏
Awesome. Looking forward to it. The definition of the template of a Bond movie. Great film
A fantastic conversation guys. I throughly enjoyed it.
Wow, David REALLY stepped up his editing game for this one. Bravo! 👏🏻
David and Calvin discussions are perfection for me! The more the better.
My Two Cents:
- I can't find a quote but I heard even Guy Hamilton had an issue with the scenes at Auric Stud.
To quote the man himself: "American motorists kill that many every two years."
- I also agree that Auric Goldfinger is the best Bond villain both on a surface level and a substantial level.
Recently discovered both your channels and am so happy to see you both still collaborating, please PLEASE keep it up!
I've just put on From Russia with love seriously the music is so good. I love this film so much it's top 3 or top 2 Classic Genius
From Russia was my first bond film at the cinema.saw it as a 10 yr old in 1970 .massive experience.my favourite.been a massive fan ever since.hope ATJ does a great job
Loved the Conversation and new subjects around Goldfinger! Its my fav Connery Bond Film!
Thank you, great vlog! For nostalgic and emotion reasons Goldfinger remains my #1 Bond film. 60 years! Say it ain't so Mr. Bond!
Strongly disagree Calvin. The transition from the cold open to the title them is perfect. The silence, Connery delivering a joke after almost dying and then BOM BOM! Gooey Pizza! That's one of my favorite Bond moments
Same here. That's awesome.
BTW, I love when you two get together to discuss Bond. It's fun and insightful. Keep up the great work.
Goldfinger is the best example ever of a movie which IMPROVED the plot of the book. The book plot was... Unreliable.
I do like the book, but you're right. A rare case of the film being better than the book. I think both The Exorcist and Jaws are other notable examples.
Always a top 5 for me
I usually roll my eyes and think "kids today..." with some of Calvins views but I agree with much of what he says in this one.

Thus us my 2nd favourite connery bond film after from Russia with love,
Same. From Russia and Goldfinger are the best Connery Bonds and the best two Bonds in general.
I remember seeing that car with the gadgets in use as a 7 year old and I was never the same afterward. One of those movies I can't imagine life without...
Nailed it. Why Connery and Moore are my favorites! Fun.😉😄
🍸
Honor Blackman was older than Connery, that's true. She was 39, Connery only 34. However, she was a good actress, so no problem here.
Regarding the aspect ratio, the first three films are presented in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio, which, at the time, was the European standard theatrical aspect ratio.
David with the gadgets always gets me!!
Gentlemen, Mr Frobe was German; his name is pronounced Frober [without the final R]. I loved the discussion, though; thank you both.
Yes Calvin! Numero Uno villian.
Technically Blofeld is Numero uno
Always has been My favourite Bond film because it was My first. My Cousin took me to see it in Birkenhead in the 60's and as we arrived early we waited in the Circle foyer listening to the sound from when Pussy Galore is seduced. That meant I heard John Barry's stunning music cue 'Raid on Fort Knox' and I've been hooked ever since.
19:50 Diamonds Are Forever is still the best Shirley Bassey Bond song
Seen Goldfinger so many times, but saw it on the big screen at the Prince Charles cinema back in Feb.
An Easter weekend treat 👌
Great discussion on my all time favourite 007 Film
I also rank Thunderball above Goldfinger.
Do you guys know what watch golfinger wore? On the gold bracelet
43:25 huge missed opp to not have the moonraker pigeon here
Christmas came early!
Guy Hamilton isn't a step back from Terence Young, he's more like a jump to the left :)
Goldfinger just makes me feel good. We need more Bond films like that again.
Ynow I really like the idea of Bond working for Goldfinger like in the book, but the book does it so weirdly where he's not even undercover lol.
Also one of the best moments from this movie: the absolute confidence of shaving on a plane lolol
Great intro 🕺 💃🏾
Calvin, you should watch 'Es geschah am helllichten Tage' (It happened in broad daylight), 1958. I'm Sure you know this was Gert Fröbe's 'calling card' for 'Goldfinger'. But his performance herein is really terrifying.
It's matured like a fine barrel of talaska
Goldfinger is in my top 5 James Bond Adventures
In no particular order
Goldfinger
Skyfall
Spectre
The man with the golden gun
From Russia with love
AND! Fun fact, Shirtley Eaton starred in 3 episodes of "The Saint" including the pilot! Epic!
The ass slap to the music in the intro deserves a mention, great music too
Fast work, you two!
GOLDFINGER is one of the very best. 🙌🏻
Golden!!! 🤩 👏

34:00 David! In TMWTGG the Bottom's Up club is in Hong Kong not Bangkok.
Love the intro music!
It's either/or whenever i revisit 60s bond more times than not
I r se memb
I remember the year 1964 iseen goldmines at the met movie theater in Baltimore this was the first time I had to stand in line to see a movie. A long line with my brother I was nine years old
I completely agree with Calvin in that I can easily find myself reflecting the many criticisms the film gets and going along with the consensus that it's overrated. But when I sit down and watch it, none of those thoughts are in my mind, and I have fun.
I love the techno intro music 😂😂
As much as I like Oddjob, I think that he is the second best henchman. Red Grant is the absolute best. He literally had Bond on his knees begging for a cigarette. No other henchmen can make that claim.
Totally spot on. Red Grant train fight scene is iconic, shame he died, would have been great as a returning baddy.
