    Developed and published in 1989 by System 3
    Games released by System 3 always seemed to have better production values than most other titles, and I think it shows with this game.
    You play the part of some teenager obsessed with mythology and legends, who is chosen by the last remaining Titans to fight his way across time and space to defeat the evil demon, Dameron.
    The game is divided into 4 key sections:
    * Greek Mythology
    * Norse Mythology
    * Ancient Egypt
    * The Final Confrontation
    The first 3 stages involve fighting various mythological monsters, such as reanimated skeletons, trolls, Viking warrior and Egyptian mummies. Not all enemies can be killed with brute force; you have to use the correct weapons and, sometimes, need to find the correct strategy to beat your foes.
    Your life energy (shown top-right) constantly ticks away and is sapped quickly by taking damage from enemies. You can regain health by killing certain enemies and collecting the glowing health orbs they drop.
    The controls are near-perfect, the combat decent and the levels well realised, with some nice background art and good sprite animation.
    The final stage is a little disappointing as the game suddenly decides to become a shoot 'em up, but the rest of the game more than makes up for this, as does the final boss who looks pretty impressive.
    The title music by Jeroen Tel (Maniacs of Noise) is probably one of the best pieces of music for the system, and I remember almost falling out of my seat when I heard the digitised speech spoken by the woman at the start of the game.
    My one criticism is that some of the puzzle elements are slightly ambiguous, such as the Norse mythology section where you have to make a hole in the dragon's armour using your sword and then throw a dagger into it. The dragon doesn't actually die, but you're then allowed to run by and access the next level; I'm not sure many people would have realised that straight away.
    Incidentally, this game was repackaged and sold on the NES as Conan the Barbarian. There was also a 16-bit version developed and released later on the Amiga, although I think that version lacks the charm of the C64 version.
    Gameplay starts at 4:42
    A true classic.

    I had this game as a cartridge for the C64C. I was so obsessed with the music from Maniacs Of Noise that I even found a cassete a few years back with a recording having that music. I think I recorded it using a microphone, but it sounds so good that I might have recorded it directly from the headphones jack from the TV into the 'line in' of a little boombox I had. Which is interesting because I was only 8 or 9 years old... Whats more interesting though is that I remember completing this game one time and one time only, also at that age, something I can't do today!! The game has some really hard parts! For me, the best game for the C64, hands down.

      @@Kerveros1904 considering many of us were kids when this game came out ZX Speccy or C64 was all we had. And that never stopped us from enjoying these games. Also C64 has twice as many games available for it and back in those days before the internet, we traded tapes with friends to get new games. Which meant even if you had an Amiga most of your friends had a C64 or ZX Speccy. So you were out of luck on getting access to the games anyway.

    The first level of this game is definitely the most artistically beautiful. As the levels progressed, the visuals became more and more sloppy, culminating in the final level which is just an undetailed blue sludge and... R-Type clone (lol WTF?)

    • @jemenfish5408
      @jemenfish5408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First part of the game indeed doesn't quite rhyme with the second part. Even before the R-type bits, the Egyptian level was a color clash similar to earlier c64 games and the opposite of the artistic style of previous levels. The storyline as well, being indeed 'myths' in the previous levels, then turns into a 'collect the vases' and shoot em up clone as if 2 different teams were involved between both parts. More likely, someone in charge at one point said 'This game is dark and deep and brooding, and way too intellectual. Keep the parts already coded if you must, but put in something we can hype that buyers are familiar with. What's the popular shooting games? That R thingie. Do that one'
