For anyone who is wondering, Film School does NOT teach any of this. This is very valuable knowledge that Jakob is giving away for free. Much respect dude!
Y'all asked for more business videos...see here's another! New video every day in January! Comment below what you want to see covered! hit that BELL notification
How do you deal with problem clients? I shot a music video over the summer, and im still dealing with the client. They have drop the ball so many times. I sent them the first cut months ago. they went MIA. Now they're on my ass with all kinds of changes. its been back and forth for months. Ive already been paid im at the point I want to just give them there money back and take the lost.
Came her from IG to support and interact! You keep motivating me to grow! I’ll eventually quit my teaching job and do this full time! In the meantime... one short and quick video idea could be TOP ways to grow and network?
This series is becoming EXTREMELY useful and relevant and other youtubers are not covering these topics. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Would love to see a video on proposals (what to include, how/when to send, etc) for smaller projects/clients.
I second that! I'm creating a proposal right now; it's the biggest budget I've had to work with, and I'm SO GLAD I asked my client what their budget range was. It was WAY more money than I was expecting; it will really allow me to spend it in the right places and still make a good profit.
Only guy on youtube this successful trying to give you free content people usually pay for that is ACTUALLY WORTH IT. So many of these filmmaking youtubers try to make their lighting and color grade good that they dont give you shit in terms of knowledge. THANK YOU JACOB for making these , even if you made them every day for 365 days I would watch them and study it. YOU ARE A G.O.A.T. of filmmaking youtubers
These past few business videos are sooooo good man. Cant stress that enough. This is the best content by far. How to come up with creative ideas was amazing as well. These are all things we struggle with as creators trying to do this full time. Thank you!
The only other channel doing the business side of video content is Flash Film Academy and maybe The Futur even though their content is directed towards designers, but Chris has mentioned he shoots music videos as well. You're an essential niche. please keep this going so that no film maker or videographer gives up because they don't have the money or know how to be a business.
Even though this video is only a couple weeks old, it should have hundreds of thousands of views. People are so caught up in things like how to create b-roll of food, that they forget that if you want to make money with your passion, you NEED to learn the business side of things. Jakob, you're the absolute man for this. Clear and succinct. Can't wait to take your course brotha 🔥
Hey guys I know this video doesn't have many views but I know that the people who really need this information surely found this video very helpful, as did I. Thank you for the resources and I hope you all keep making these kinds of videos - it's so hard to find this information anywhere else on the internet!
TheBuffNerds, in this segmented part of your HOW TO RUN AND OPERATE YOUR OWN BUSINESS video, you've answered the aged old question: Why do you charge so much for the work you do? For example: You only make, or you only do (fill in the blank). I can do that. They'll claim. As if what was accomplished by you was done effortlessly and with the greatest of ease. Truth of the matter is they can, but will they? I am so excited to jump into a business venture (real estate photography) and to have something that is tangible and is my very own and along the way it's the people like you who work behind the scenes that deserves much of the acclaim!
Bro, your content is fire. So helpful. There's a plethora of tutorials on the craft these days, but you're one of the only people out there talking about the real stuff that makes an actual difference to our businesses. Appreciate you man.
The value in these videos are going beyond the roof. Well done Jacob...we admire your work and generous sharing of your process. You possibly have little to no idea of the extent of how valuable this series of videos have been to so many of us subscribed. Thanks for sharing
Once again you dropped us a dime.thanks for the valuable info. I scooped up the essentials pack a few months back and it has paid for itself quality and professionalism. An element our production company truly needed. Appreciate it. How about doing us a solid and sharing some of your tips and tricks on treatments when you’re planning a project for a client. It’s nice to see you back!
Excel or Google Sheet templates for invoicing are a quick and easy way to get started. I definitely recommend any freelancer or business owner to get started that way. Plenty of free templates available online or you can simply follow some video tutorials such as yours. However, once you hit about 3-5 invoices per month, I'd change to use an online invoicing tool such as InvoiceBerry as it is faster and also allows you to take online payments from your clients. Then probably at the 100-150 invoices per month mark (not really relevant to most freelancers), I'd pick a fully-fledged accounting package with a payroll, etc. for team members.
Dropping gold!!! I’ve been doing invoices for a while now, but I still wish I knew this when I started 3 years ago. This series is game changing, thanks Jakob! Much appreciated
If you choose to, you can charge separately for raw footage. In my experience with clients, the few that ask for raw footage either want to archive it for future reference or for future modifications. You can choose not to charge for it but I usually let clients know it comes at an extra cost. I have archives of every single project I have ever worked on because some clients comeback for tweaks down the line or requests for portions that didn't make the cut during edit and its important to have it handy. For that I usually charge separately as well and every client of mine eventually paid gladly with accolades too because they're shocked I archived the raw footage to begin with.
You can add this as a section in the contract under pricing. Ie: “raw footage is available for purchase at $x per clip or at x% of total project”. By having the pricing stated ahead of time you’re allowing for a smoother transaction.
Thank you so much for these past few videos, they've been super helpful as I've been trying to start my own, I'm 18 and have no idea what I'm doing so these videos are super helpful, thank you!
Omg I'm so thankful I know English. For some reason this type of content in my native language is really poor. But at least, by searching on TH-cam and typing in English I found your video and it was amazing. Thanks a lot! 👍
Great info!! I think a cool video would be, at what point should you start bringing on help for lighting, camera operation, etc.. when we all start out as the "do everything" guy, it's hard to know when the best time to bring on help would be for different areas. You've started out like that and worked on bigger things as well, so how do you determine it? Love these videos and the helpful nuggets of info you're bringing to us all!!
For me personally I would say immediately. I work near somebody who pays his crew per hour just barely over minimum wage but I believe people should be paid what they are worth so I pay them their day rate. So currently I only have 1 person helping me but he is about the best person I could have helping me. I can only afford him but his help is much more worth it to me than having 5 people that I’m paying super cheap for. But as soon as I have a budget to pay more people what they are worth then I will bring more people on. Hope it helps!
Love the video!!! Could you maybe do one about quotations or contract agreements? I would assume these are much more in depth in the case of raw footage rights, sudden cancellations, unforeseen circumstances (e.g. talent backing out last minute) etc. Happy new year and thank you!! 😁
I want to know how you do taxes as a freelancer. I know it can be from 15-30% of the total project, but would you not put it down as a percentage or do you add the tax % in already. Hopefully that makes sense!
Jacob, this series has been so helpful to me and my business... Please keep producing this type of content that touches on the business side of running a production company. thank you!
Excellent video. My husband is so backwards. He's way too nice and creates the product before payment, then is swindled by the customer at the end.... sending him this video!!! Thank you!
Really good video. Thanks for sharing such valuable content. Last few lines was really touching. It would be really appreciated if you can share the invoice template
I didn’t know you where affiliated with the tropic color company at first. Thank you because I’ve bought the better contracts pro edition and it’s awesome.
Great Info as always. Keep going strong, don't get discouraged by not getting views or attention on Instagram a-lot of people are benefiting from the stuff your sharing.
Hey, Jakob! Just now discovering you’re in Tempe…? Lol I wish I had known that to possibly collaborate on some work… but I just moved from there to Chicago.. Thanks for sharing this knowledge! It’s a great addition to our education and awareness arsenal - Jared
I brought your package and I can't find this invoice I tried going to your site, I even tried emailing the email I received. I also noticed its no refunds. That's a side issue I have with Apple Pay but as a professional and indie filmmaker that supports all business small or large I feel like that package you sell should have a breakdown of each document provided. 40 dollars is not bad at all but some things I don't agree with it.
I made my business official a month ago. This video is super helpful. I want to get the contract pack, but I'm not sure if I can use it in the Netherlands.
I have a question! If you don't have a physical location that you run your business out of are you supposed to put your home address on the invoice? Would a PO box work?
Will businesses be open to sending payments as friends or family on their end? I'm curious coming from a business perspective if that would be allowed for their tax and invoicing structure
In your invoice would you also include the project budget as well or just how much you personally are charging to shoot or edit? I’m a one man band so most times I need extra money for props, locations, etc
If you've agreed to 2 revisions before hand and now they're moving into 3 & 4 you need to make a new invoice for those extra revisions that were un-agreed upon before hand
For anyone who is wondering, Film School does NOT teach any of this. This is very valuable knowledge that Jakob is giving away for free. Much respect dude!

Awesome thank you so much. Very helpful information. Is there an app you would suggest for making invoices? Thank you again.
this is nice because you give us idea whenever we have client we should get first partial payment so that we can have lessen our scam
Would you be able to make a template of this exact invoice? I just love the options you have and the room to be more detailed with payment.

I keep all footage for 4 weeks after completion of the project before deleting to make space and the client has those 4 weeks to ask for the footage

cant speak for everyone but I absolutely needed this video 💯
Great series you have going here. Could you talk about who owns the rights to the footage that you film and if you ever give clients raw footage?
its the client if they're paying for your services unless you agree too otherwise.

Yes they are at least for me
Kind of seems unprofessional to me. I just add the 3% or whatever to my quote. It’s just cost of doing business.
Man thank you so much!
Thank you so much!! Such valuable information
In your invoice would you also include the project budget as well or just how much you personally are charging to shoot or edit? I’m a one man band so most times I need extra money for props, locations, etc
Do you need to include a signature/ sign the invoice ?
Do you have clients sign the agreements ? If so how can you set up a electronic signature
Hi friend, what kind of clip on mic are you using? Did you buy that online? thanks
thank you for the info
Fantastic, thank you so much.
Valuable info brother appreciate it 💪💪
What do u do if they dont want to sign the agreement or the contract they send u dont like?
Then you’d either reconnect to devise something you both feel comfortable with or you have to go separate ways. Simple as that.
You the man!
thanks!
Good Morrin BuffNerds thanks also congratulation on your marriage
I almost feel I dirty listening to this AMAZING knowledge for free 😬
hahaha
Can u invoice people/clients that has no venmo paypal or anything by doing this same technique?
How safe is it to send personal information via email? Such as: Payment Details, Addresses, and Etc.
How many contracts in your bundle? Seems to be 2 pages based on the table of contents?
Helped out so much
Jakob ain’t letting up anytime soon!
nahhhh
This help so much!!!
Terrific video thank you!
Great information thanks!!
Thanks for posting..
When do revisions come into play when sending invoices?
If you've agreed to 2 revisions before hand and now they're moving into 3 & 4 you need to make a new invoice for those extra revisions that were un-agreed upon before hand
Paypal as friends and family? , woud paypal not hold the money when you try to withdraw?
Thank you for this video sir
I purchased this bundle, and I'm not seeing these templates anywhere... please help!
What did you use to create this invoice? Excel?
