Big builder who has spent $1000s on custom keyboards. That extra space on the caps lock allows you to run step caps lock or regular, which is actually pretty uncommon on entry-level boards, so that's points for nuphy
Keyboards are great these days. I upgraded to open-source QMK-based boards a few years ago, and I'm never going back to proprietary. I recommend diving deep into the firmware and remapping, to make a custom layout optimized for your personal needs. It can do much, much more than what it says on the keycap labels. I don't even need a mouse any more.
I own two of their keyboards. Stellar quality. I own multiple really nice pro level mechanical keyboards, and they hang with the big boys just fine. They are a bit pricey, but they’re worth it. Really solid stuff. I use the NuPhy Air wireless low profile 75/80 key on my living room Xbox. Clear yellow!!! It goes perfect with Cyberpunk2077.
Glad you finally got to try a really good keyboard. The Gem80 is admittedly pretty overpriced vs the best aluminum alternatives, but it's still extremely good for the mainstream tech crowd and is feature-complete with QMK/VIA + Tri-mode Wireless + RGB + all the foams and various mounting styles, different plate options, etc. Full QMK + wireless is pretty difficult to find. One mistake I noticed in their installation guide, is that you should put other switches into the board first BEFORE removing the 3 default ones. Barebones boards that come with a couple switches in there do that to keep all the layers aligned, so if for example you took the 3 switches out and then handled the board a bit, the layers might shift and then block the switches from going in until you take it apart and align the layers by hand. The 2 positions for the caps lock are so you can choose between standard and "stepped" caps-lock keycaps, and in order to have 2 switch sockets so close together they usually need to turn them sideways, which is why it was so difficult for you to pull it and the enter switch out, the puller tool wasn't pressing in the clips as they were horizontal instead of vertical.
I have a Nuphy keyboard (it's a small portable one) and it's been a good board to me so I'm glad to see them getting into full sized ones. Glad that you got a fancy board out of this video!
It was genuinely fun to work on! I had these boxes sitting on my desk for ages, and now I'm wondering why it took so long to get around to actually making it :P
I'm a viewer from Newfoundland! Don't hear people shout us out that often lol. Makes sense though, we only really have the population of a medium sized city. Fun fact, our time zone is UTC-3:30, we are a half hour off from most time zones.
I’ve been thinking of getting the Nuphy Air60 for when I retire my iPad Air 2 for a Mini 6 or 7, and, man, I guess that’s gunna be an adventure assembling it. 😅
Haven't checked in on you in quite a while. I obviously haven't seen the whole thing yet, but I'm loving it so far! I see you're close to 70K, which is painfully close to 100K, so, keep on keeping on, I guess! Cya again in 4 more months!

Careful with drink around keyboards, at school we watched a video where a kid spilled his milk on his keyboard and then got sucked into the computer and ended up on a farm learning how milk is produced, I’m pretty certain it was a documentary
A nice little video editing project would be to re-cut this so that T.Dweeb installs all the switches in the correct left-to-right, top-to-bottom order the way a normal person would do it. ps: you maniac

Noooo not in random places. you have to start over. Start form the beging. Start in top left corner then the 1 to the right, then the 1 below the first, and so on, on a diagonal pattern.. There is something quite satisfying with the sound of the keys, kinda sounds like tap dancing... My keybourd cost £15, but doesn't have tap dancing keys.😿
😴😴😴😴 Huh? What did I miss? Oh yeah, building your own keyboard is strangely satisfying and can take you down an expensive rabbit hole... a very gratifying expensive rabbit hole.
I don't like keyboards with small enter keys. I don't understand why there is no support for other languages. For example, I would like to use a keyboard with Turkish letters and a large enter key.
I just don't understand the appeal of paying computer prices for a.....keyboard. I've tried several of these "make your own" keyboards and they feel no different then what computers in the box with most PCs and they are WAAAAAY too loud. Guess I'm just Goofy that way. But you made the build a keyboard process very entertaining TechDweeb
It ultimately just depends. There's a lot of factors for the high end keyboards like case design, mounting style, layout, switch type, and even spring weighting within the switches. I actually have a rotation of a few different builds because I like to change things up pretty often. It seems pretty pointless, but a keyboard is something we use on the daily so being able to really customize the typing experience just makes using a computer feel better overall, especially if you're fortunate enough to use one for your day job. The most important thing is to figure out your needs for things like typing feel, aesthetics, and even functionality. Even just one build that satisfies those wants/needs can be quite a game changer for your daily life.
@@seta_souji I totally understand that. But so far out of the different ones I've tested, none of them were as good a my almost silent keyboard from lenovo. All that clicking noise is irritating to me
Did you know, you can actually buy wireless keyboards fully assembled, perfectly working for 20-30usd? And those don't even sound like a typewriter is about to explode. Congrats on your first boring video! 😊

Good to know 👍
If you want to remove the orange switch, rotate the switch/keycap puller 90 degrees. Thats where the clips to remove the switches are
This is the most satisfying video I've ever watched in my life

Hipyo got me hooked on keyboard building and modding. You did a great job! Also, this sounds amazing.
Looks great! I've built a few and love the choice of switches and bases and colors...it's fun.
Did not know full kits existed before this video. Tempted to build one for the mini pc.

Haha I did that a few times in this vid. :S
Ironically, I am using a Nuphy keyboard as I watch this. Nuphy Air96. It's very cool. I think I might order another set of keycaps for it.

I'm hoping to get that very soon!
