5:53 - Maybe I'm weird. But I just can't find it in myself to split my keyboard apart like butt cheeks. That Numpad has been there since I started learning Key-Fu
The fact people don't value how much faster number input is on a numpad blows my mind. The only use 1-0 should get is when typing passwords or being used as hotkeys in games, other than that every number should be typed with numpad key-fu in a flurry of keystrokes.
@@randomhero123 maybe if it was on the left side. However, if my right hand has to leave my mouse to come back to the keyboard, I’m not saving that much time, if at all, by using the num pad.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but I just can't go tenkey-less. My numpad was there when I started my key tapping journey and I refuse to part with it.
The process of finding what you like is always so interesting. I didn't really even test the feel of too many things when I built my first, just had two pre-builts before it and a TON of YT videos to gauge the sound profile I wanted. It was a tad intimidating, but the biggest hurdle for me is always just sticking with it when something feels like it's taking too long. Ripping off stock caps and switches is soooo booring. Super rewarding process in the end though and been absurdly happy with mine for a year now. I really do want to build a proper split keeb now that I have an Alice layout one. I do recommend protecting your arms and hands with an ergonomic keeb.
I feel for the people who can't have "loud" keyboards in the office. I lucked out - my office mate loves the sound of my loud-as-heck typing on my thocky keyboard!
Nah like honestly I literally got myself a keyboard with silent switches just so I can use it when I have to type for longer cause it fucks with my focus if I use my other ones. So now I have a silent one for typing and one with non silents for gaming and other stuff.
I sat for 3 hours last night, searching for a good keyboard. So many custom builds came up and I ended up being discouraged from an overload of information, and the thought of it being a process that would end up being tedious and mentally painful. Watching this video put me in a "I got this!" mood, thank you!
Your channel influenced me to take an old Corsair Vengeance K70, clean it up, get some new caps, lazy lube the switches and stuff cotton in the chassis (tape mod PCB too). It THOCS! Thanks for educating me and I wish I would have done this long ago.
Mr. Hipyo, thanks to you, I just build my own custom keyboard for the first time You had successfully convince me that choosing the parts & building are fun And it's correct indeed 😊😊
Now her whole entire keyboard is what I want. I think I would change some keys to a green with plant icons, just cause I like plants. The purple, the silent with the clacky feel! Manific
I really like this channel, i just thought about modifying my keyboard for the first time after using a "stock" mechanical keyboard for a long time. some keys stopped working, so i thought it was done for, but a friend of mine brought me some switches, and well, they sounded really nice ( the keyboard initially had red switches, the new ones are brown) and it made me buy a whole set to replace them. and then I added some lil rubber rings under the commonly used gaming keys (wasd) for a very smooth feel, while still getting a more pronounced click for actions. its a very little baby step, but i really do like the feel of it now.
LET'S GO, REGINA! though my heart hurts at just how quiet the keyboard is. i say this as someone who just finished making a quiet one for my coworker and will have to make a 2nd one for another... i never thought a 21 pilots lyric would hit so hard, but "quiet is violent"...
Hilariously, I just changed my thocky switches for silent switches for my office keyboard when I saw this video. I'm still using tactiles because they feel the best but the sound difference is amazing! Switches have come a long way over the past 5 years.
Typing on my GEM80 right now! I went with the blue and picked up switches, caps and a wrist rest. Sadly the profile and caps were for me but yea at the price, just buy them. Put GMK Striker and Cream Blacks on mine. Ragina did a great job, very fun video! I'm sure she will love the GEM80!
I can totally relate! I needed some silent switches for my keyboard at work because my keyboard was too loud and I didn't want to be the annoying colleague who makes so much noise lmao. My last switch purchases were silent tactile (Outemu silent lemon) and silent linear (Akko haze pink) - maybe there are better switches out there but damn were they life-changing. Appreciate the newbie-friendly advice as always (even though I've been into this hobby for nearly 4 years now)
I just got a Gem80 to build for my girlfriend and ooooooo boy this thing sounds lovely right out of the box with the mint switches. I got the lilac one, which pairs perfectly with the PolyCaps Hippo set (her favorite animal, luckily!). I am so jealous as her keyboard now sounds and feels much better than mine. I think I might get my own in the Cosmic Mocha color to match with your Coffee Shop keys!
do you know a place where i can buy keyboards bases, no switches or keycaps included. Everywhere i try to search, its always a fully prebuilt keyboard. And not NuPhy, unless you can recommend me a good non-prebuilt keyboard under $60 from NuPh
I always want that keycaps, unfortunately it'll be very expensive to import it here to my country 😥. That's one very cool keyboard btw, loving the build!
While I generally agree, separate numpads are quite useful in my experience for CAD work. It's rather nice to be able to use the mouse and numpad at the same time without reaching over with my left hand. I keep it on the left generally, and move it to the right when needed.
Man I’m gonna build my own keyboard for the first time… always used razor keyboards and thought they were top of the line until 2 days ago when my keys started sticking after 10 years and I started looking for an upgrade There’s like a whole community of keyboard builder lol wtf how did I not know about this before Anyways.. glad I found your channel
I don't like numpads but if a keyboard doesn't have home and end, hells no, those are essential keys for programming, to go to the beginning or end of a line
Try the malonic gateron switches. It is a very clean and much more quiet. You don't need to, but its just cool that I could listen to clicky switches without going insane
As someone who has 0 idea about keyboards I really do love this. I wish I would've watched it before I spent $100+ on a cherry mx haha I want a creamy keyboard and bought it since I saw most switches used cherry mx as the base and now I have no idea what to do with it or what to buy lol
as someone who technically made my first qcustom keyboard : Dont buy linear switches if you have optical man,,, i opened every switch with MY NAILS and used the bottom of the optical with the spring and opened the switches i bought from temu called the bsun dream which sounds amazing imo , ofcourse it sounds a bit worse with the optical bottom but after i Opened every switch and swapped the stuff in it , i put on the keycaps i bought from temu and had to use some of my old switches cause keys from a different language , and then i lubed every switch with baby oil , but i put a bit too much on my q and now its randomly hitting which is fine. And even tho i used 6 hours opening and switching the switches , it was worth it,,, since i had gateron optical blues before and now it sounds amazing on my ac61m , it already had lubed stabilisers but they were kinda rattly so i removed them from the delete , enter and shift but not the spaceqbar ofc ... but i have this problem where some of they keys are kinda bumpy at the top , which is why i lubed them with baby oil, but it didnt remove all of it .....
Funny, I have exactly the same preferences. But I live in Germany and need the big iso enter key and German legends. Makes building a keyboard like this hell of a lot more difficult and expensive.
Came here to say something like this too. If my employer would supply me a keyboard without numpad, I would wonder why they do not want me to be productive 😆
I have the nuphy96 air with wisteria switches. I like it a lot but I honestly wish it had a 100 percent version, having a little bit of space to track the other keys is so important. But god this keyboard feels great. It's a good tactile and silent keyboard. A nice low profile mechanical keyboard is great.
Here is a simple suggestion: If you would like to get a silent mechanical keyboard - but the one you like, don't overspend over like $50 ... buy Epomaker sea salt lubed silent linear switches... job done...

loud cars are cool but by changing from a ceramic catalytic converter to a metallic cat it can generate an even better sound and isnt obnoxiously loud
