Did you check the radiator cap to see if it pressurizes? The engine can get cavitation were air bubbles form on the cylinder sleeve and cause pitting. A good diesel anitfreeze should have chemicals to help stop that. Adept Ape is a diesel Cat mechanic and did a good explanation of the cavitation. Hope you have a very safe harvest and your families stay healthy.
I have seen the failed pistons and liners from a 4020 that ran automotive coolant. Straight water will run cooler, but don’t run that way long unless you add a conditioner. You need the good diesel coolant to prevent cavitation and erosion of the engine cylinder liners.
Exactly. It used to be "antifreeze", now it's "coolant", and has anti corrosion additives, heat transfer additives, anti cavitation additives, as well as raising the boiling point of the water so you don't boil over as soon. You never want to run straight water in an engine, especially not a diesel.
It's a 4020 Shes making 100hp out of 6lts roughly It's no modern deisel doing 200hp out of 3lts at 3.5k rpm Water would be just fine apart from freezing It would be way better for it than sone of the additives in modern coolant reacting with 50yr old seals When the engines were designed they were most likely planning on straight water in the radiator back in the mid 60s or earlier
@@fowletm1992 can you show me from a JD manual that straight water is all right? They have known about corrosion and boiling points since long before the 60's, and the people designing the modern coolants also know about the types of seals in the engines. But this is why you should use the exact type of coolant (there are many different ASTM and Manufacturer specs for exact coolant chemistry) actually recommended by the manufacturer, because it will be designed to both protect the metal, and also be compatible with the seals. And even if they designed it back in the day for water, more recently they discovered the issues of galvanic corrosion (when they started using brass and copper radiators), and especially the major issue of cavitation erosion of the cylinder sleeves, and so the coolant technology to prevent the corrosion issues and the cavitation damage is relatively recent innovation, and helps old engines too. I mean, it wasn't long ago that Ford had major issues with it, and had to change the formulation of the recommended coolant to stop engines dying early.
Nick, something else to check on that Deere, as well as any radiator of a few decades. The cooling fines between the cores that get bent over from things touching them. Double check them for fatigue, sometimes they will get week and as air hits them or is being sucked past them, they will fold over and block the air. We had a truck that would idle fine, but going down the road the temp would climb. Checked everything. Put it on a dyno, it was fine. Stuck a fan in front of it and watched the fines fold over and the temp head for the red.
when i was younger my mom rolled the combine and we swath and then use pickup headers so it doesnt really stop you from rolling so i wear the seatbelt in a couple of our fields that have really bad hills

Years ago a good friend told to mix distilled water with the antifreeze instead of water. Been running it in my N14 Cummins for years now and radiator is clean no calcium build up . 👍

Hey Nick for a change of flags I’m going to suggest the Marine Corps flag!! Bob thanks for explaining the Mae Wes products. Great job! Thanks for sharing guys
Those filler plates all depend on crop conditions, variety and area. Used to put 1 or 2 in the front for customers with hard thrashing complaints. Then again, that was at the end of the 23 and beginning or the 2588 era
Last year, at Goldinger farm in Minnesota, he was on a narrow road, pulling a tilling implement, came around a corner, deputy in a small car coming toward him had no place to go(bank in her lane, steep drop off into a field on his) he sheared a electric pole in half. He didn’t have his seat belt on, he was very lucky. He wears it now.

Great comment about seatbelt use. You may want to re-think running just plain water in the John Deere 4520. Tractor anti-freeze used in diesel engines normally have SCA's (supplimental cooling additives) to prevent cavitation especially in the cylinder liners as well as control acidity levels. Plain water does not give much protection.
Watch Wes work had a video of overheating on a similar John Deere. Ran for years with heating issues. The main one he found first was a bad radiator cap not letting it pressure.
One problem i always had a problem with was the design with John Deere new Generation 4020s up through the 40 series was the placement of the fuel tank and hydraulic oil cooler and the hydralic Lines so close to the radiator...too much oil in the vicinity of the radiator oil and accidentally spilled fuel plus dust equals clogged radiators. We had problems with one of our 4020s and our 4520....plus we pushed them two hard in most field tillage operations. And also John Deere did use dual thermostats which was good because very seldom was the problem of both failing at the same time....so some circulation was always maintained....
@@WelkerFarms he also made his point with the safety for the header. He’s talking safety and the air hose blew. I remember being an apprentice forty years ago working on farm equipment and we seem to have lost at least one customer or family member to a farming accident a year back then.
Thanks for the video as always. It was interesting and enjoyable. You always do a good job on videos. First of all: Love the Let Freedom Ring flag!!!!! Great you use that along with the American Flag. Many thanks Welkers. Thanks to Nick for clarity on the combine grates inside, only cover the screens when dealing with low bushel grain. When back in high bushel grain then remove the covers on the grates. The radiator on the old John Deere might have been the problem. Lots of junk came out during the flushing process. Hopefully it will not overheat now. Good work guys. Dad got the skid plates on the header in good order and ready for the field. You are in the wheat harvest fields now so hope most of it has respectable production. Do understand it is a hard year. Hang in there all!!!! Colby is enjoying his combine ride. Passing on a pat on the head for Colby. About it for now. Looks good seeing the grain go in the bin. You all take care and be safe. God bless all of you!!! Looking forward to the next video. Thanks. The Iowa farm boy from years ago.
We use CLR to clean clogged heater cores. It works. You can put a quart in the radiator and drive it for a while and it won't hurt things. Flush when it's in for next service.
If you still have issues with overheating after doing the simple fixes, I have a suggestion. There are supplemental radiator fans you can buy for older cars and trucks operating in desert temperatures. Basically they are just a 12v fan that mounts to the front of the radiator and helps push more air through. One of those kits might make a difference if the problem is due to the engine RPM not being where it was designed to be.
Here in Norway seatbelts on tractors and similar machinery got mandatory to wear/use when the machine is in use. At all times but if youre doing work that requires you to get in and out alot and is at low speed you dont have to use it obviously. For me personally this mandatory requirement didnt change much cause ive always been trying to use it as much as i can when on the road and hilly fields, just in case cause we never know and its such a small thing and it will matter alot

Amazing how much those header protectors are like the "shoes" that were under the header of my old IH 990 mower conditioner years ago. I wish that I had poly to put on them back then
On the old John Deere. Buy a box of the cascade powder dish washer detergent. Pour it in the radiator. Run the tractor and get it warm so the thermostat opens. Let it run for an hour or so. Then drain out and replace with new fluid
Kudos on the seatbelt! 😂 Didn’t see the previous video but based on your intro, some people didn’t understand the concept of a cover plate and criticized you???🤦♂️
I’m sure this has been said but a 4320 4430 4630 all take a straight upper water manifold piece where the thermostats are. that 90 degree hose may hold back the flow creating heat
I always use filtered deionised distilled water into my radiators blended with ordinary radiator/pump protection fluids or antifreeze. Use a lot of this and have a cheap to use own water treatment equipment to produce about 10 liters an hour and fill it in cans and barrels. Also to fill steam-irons, thinning paint, finish cleaning vehicles, batteries and closed circuit water heating/cooling systems and more. Then you don't have any calcium deposits or salts in water!
I had an old farmall C that would overheat. Used iron out mixed in water poured in radiator and then ran tractor for 30 minutes. Drained the water out and it out dark brown but it ran way better after that.
Here are a couple of options on your JD 4520 cooling problem. The JD 4630's came with a 6 blade fan (AR60401) which could help. Also there was a cooling improvement package available for the 4630's which consisted of an 8 blade fan (AR85892) along with a smaller diameter water pump pulley (R52593 I think) which increased the fan rpm over the stock set up. I'm thinking that these would bolt right on your 4520. Also check the pulley grooves as sometimes on these older tractors the "V" in the pulley edges is wore almost vertical and there is very little belt to pulley contact.
Let freedom ring, indeed! Scary times we're living in. Thanks for working safe guys! God bless🇺🇸

I’m sure this has been said but a 4320 4430 4630 all take a straight upper water manifold piece where the thermostats are. that 90 degree hose may hold back the flow creating heat
im so happy for you guys that the wheat is not so bad god bless guys
I always use filtered deionised distilled water into my radiators blended with ordinary radiator/pump protection fluids or antifreeze. Use a lot of this and have a cheap to use own water treatment equipment to produce about 10 liters an hour and fill it in cans and barrels. Also to fill steam-irons, thinning paint, finish cleaning vehicles, batteries and closed circuit water heating/cooling systems and more. Then you don't have any calcium deposits or salts in water!
Good call Robert, safety never takes a day off. 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
Awesome Video and Much Love as Always!!!
You travel so fast when harvesting compared to here in the UK. I guess we have a lot more straw to deal with.
You were clear the first time. Some folks don’t listen
