I'm happy you mentioned Nyder in your post-episode thoughts, he's my pick for the best henchman in Who history. Cold, cunning, fiercely loyal to Davros and played to perfection by Peter Miles in his third and final Who role. The ruthless enforcer (Himmler) to Davros' megalomaniac (Hitler). I'm not surprised you find him menacing either because his name may have been inspired by 'neidr' the Welsh word for snake!

Davros is a child of war. A war that lasted thousands of years. He lost his entire lower body, his left hand, his eyes and sustained damage to both face and vocal cords, permanently leaving him crippled. It’s only natural that he wants to end it by any means necessary.

What was great about the character of Davros as a concept is how Terry Nation made it clear Davros based the Dalek's hard-wired, genetically engineered personalities on himself, a ranting homicidal fascist and xenophobe obsessed with conquest. Convinced he is an avatar of intellect and logic, but descending into shrieking hysterical fury at any opposition.
The Daleks are psychopaths because they were created by a psychopath.

Watch for the moment when Davros asks the Doctor and he to 'talk together, simply talk, as men of science'.
One wonders what Davros might have been without the war he grew up within.
There is an excellent audio drama from Big Finish called 'I, Davros', where his life is explored, similarly to the famous Roman tale: 'I CLAVDIVS' (I, Claudius).

It's one of the extraordinary things about this story, how the huge war is between two vast city-domes, which are within walking distance, and how while the Doctor and Harry can get into the Thal dome, but Davros and Nyder can beat them there, and by quite a margin, too.
It's almost as if the war is not really happening any more by episode 4.

The Thal that dangles Sarah from the rocket cone is Hilary Minster, who played another of that race, Marat, in 'Planet of the Daleks' (and was exterminated for his bravery). Later on he's reunited with Guy Siner ('Boy General' Ravon) in the wartime BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo - as a stereotypical ranting German General. And that transition is also a reminder of the blurred line here between the Kaleds and the Thals; so clearly distinguished in the earlier Dalek serials. Perhaps typically for the 1970s, the people you used to think of as the good guys are just as bad here.

Thanks for your lovely commentary! I first saw Genesis of the Daleks when I was a little boy in Australia more than 40 years ago. At the time it wasn't one of my favourite Doctor Who Stories, probably because all the sets and filming locations are so very drab, grey and miserable looking, and the story felt to be so slow moving. The amount of screen time the actual Daleks have in the story is actually very, very small, and for the most part the story lacks the monsters and fantastical settings characteristic of Doctor Who. It's a philosophical, psychological suspense story for the mature viewer, devised by the brilliant talent of Terry Nation and it's definitely grown on me over the years. Thanks again for your reaction - much appreciated!

I was trying to find out recently why Tom Baker’s doctor is so good, and I think I got it. In short the 4th is a goofy, funny, lovable, bohemian in dark depressing landscapes like war fields and murder caves. But he manages to be a powerful positive force in these conditions which is what separates him from other doctors. No other Doctor not even David Tennant or Matt Smith have the same positive outlook on a depressing situation like Tom Baker. No wonder he was a Doctor for kids to look up to. As even when they were watching something scary they knew that this doctor wouldn’t be so scared.

@@christianwise637 It's so clever. General Ravon comes across as a delusional fanatic when the Doctor and Harry are first captured, yet here he is with the other senior Kaled council members being concerned about the unethical experiments of Davros. Maybe for the wrong reasons, he could still be motivated by ideals of "racial purity", but that makes his character both consistent and, at this time, a valuable ally. The stakes are high and though the future must be a foregone conclusion (at least for Terry Nation's bank balance), the Doctor doesn't believe so and thus neither do we. It really feels like the story is momentous and everything is hanging in the balance.

The tales about Michael Wisher sitting in a chair with a paper bag over his head to simulate the discomfiture he was about to experience in costume are always a fan favourite (particularly with Tom recalling how he would cut holes in the top of the bag so that the smoke from the constant stream of cigarettes passing under the bag could escape). And there's a nice one about kids visiting the set and creeping up on what they believe to be an inert dummy - only for Wisher to lash out and grip one of their hands! The stuff that nightma-dreams are made of...

I saw this episode in 1979 when I was on vacation in Australia. And it scared the 11-year-old of me. But when I watched again over and over and. When Davros said the ultimate conqueror of the universe. That means the Star Wars and Star Trek. And I ask every Star Wars fan. How many Sith and Jedi can kill a Dalek? And I look at the episode. Micheal Wisher must have looked at all the World War two films of Hitler's speeches. And read Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. And Dr. Mengle because if you watch the Bunker and Downfall. And watch Frankenstein. And I came to to the conclusion that Davros is a combination of all three. Micheal wanted to continue with Davros. But his stage commitments prevented him from doing this. Man, I wish I could have seen him on the stage.

Very much enjoyed how much your post-episode thoughts focused on Davros. I like to try and imagine what it must have been like for a viewer in the 70s watching this for the first time. They would've gone into it knowing the Daleks, of course, but I wonder how they felt about Davros and how it ended up being his story.
Rewatching this story, one part scared the crap out of me; when the one guy meets with Nyder in the holding cell, the camera pans over and Nyder is standing in the dark. You can just see the light reflected in his glasses and his creepy smile.

One of the elements I like of this story, as you mentioned is how Davros is written so well and a villain. He's not just there to chew the scenery, he has clear goals and a fully developed personality. It's also worth pointing this out because when this story was written, he and the rest of Kaleds were never expected to come back. He's just a one off badguy for this story, unlike the Master, who was always intended to be recurring. Yet you do have a feeling of there being more to them. Thus when something this well written is expended upon in new who for example, you can see why they have become so iconic.

I had an idea for a prequel/sequel to Genesis of the Daleks, being an obviously Dalek-centric but perhaps Doctor & Companion-lite one, where a temporal anomaly alerts the Daleks that they must go on a secret mission back in time to Skaro's past during the Thal and Kaled war and to the cause of the incident that crippled Davros in the first place, which led to the Daleks creation, the Daleks must ensure this incident happens, even if they have to cause it themselves, thus via time travel in a grandfather & bootstrap causal loop paradox, the Daleks have to create their own creator to ensure their own creation and survival... this then leads to a scene back in the future timeline where Davros who's so far is unaware of any of this trying to remind the Daleks that he created them only for the original Supreme Dalek to respond with correct... but it was also we who created you..!

Michael Wisher turns in a remarkable performance as Davros. Despite the prosthetics and heavy modulation of his voice he manages to project Davros' character and obsessive near mania very clearly yet still portrays him as a far from one dimensional character. He sets the bar high for later actors taking on the role.
Another delight in this story is the relationship between the members of the Tardis team. The writers seem finally to have got a handle on Harry's character and role. It's such a pity that he was largely wasted earlier and that his character (as discussed in earlier reactions, so not a spoiler!) was regarded as largely redundant once Baker was cast. Harry is the first male companion since Jamie and the first 'older' man since Ian way back in the first Doctor's day. We see, of course, the same trend continuing (until the 13th Doctor) with a series of young female companions other than Rory who only gained maturity slowly towards the end of the (over-long) Amy & Rory saga.
I'll come out and say it, "I like Harry" and, incidentally, Harry Sullivan is *not* an imbecile!

So glad you are reacting to this amazing classic. Love your reactions to this. Michael Wisher as Davros is simply phenomenal, so creepy and the make up is extraordinary. Credit to Peter Miles too for his cold and calculating, cunning portrayal of Nyder. Love your channel. By the way, dig the dress and sorry to sound personal here, but you have a lovely body. You're reactions are fun and you aren't hard on the eye either.

I wondered when you'd get to this story eventually.

Your point about the Doctor and Harry getting around brings up a weakness in the story, namely the small sense of scale. The Kaleds and Thals have been fighting a war for centurie, which originally involved weapons of mass destruction, despite the two cities being next door to each other, with a handy tunnel enabling them to sneak in. It would be like Moscow being within a few miles of Kiev and yet unleashing all their nuclear arsenal on Ukraine.
