Filming the speedboat scene, Elizabeth Sladen's boat went haywire and she had to jump into the water. She nearly drowned in the strong currents and was saved by a stuntman who also got into difficulty and ended up ill in hospital. An electrician also broke his leg when his ladder collapsed and a production team member met a potholer in the caves, who the staff had no recollection of letting in or out. A potholer had apparently died in the caves three years earlier however...
The filming in the caves at wookey hole was supposedly cursed after the director's wife took some iron age arrow heads she'd found, and then more so when the production team touched a rock that was supposed to be the petrified body of a witch. The director later reburied the arrow heads and everything apparently ran smoothly after that.

There is actually a documentary, The curse of season 12, available here on TH-cam.
Additionally William Hartnell died while this went to air and Elisabeth Sladen died on the anniversary of it's transmission.

Here is some facts about this story:
    1. Robert Holmes had to rewrite this story because it didn't fit the style that Holmes and Philip Hinchcliff wanted take DOCTOR WHO as a more adult story.
    2. Elisabeth Sladen almost got severely injured while making this story

One of the things I liked about the Terry Nation Dalek stories was he did as little work as possible, leaving it to the script editor to flesh it out. The positive side of this was that it always fit the style of the series at the time.

Fun Fact: The actor playing the Vogan Chief Councillor Tyrum, Kevin Stoney, is the same one that played the villainous Tobias Vaughn in the Second Doctor story "The Invasion" (ironically, also a cybermen story).

Also he was in "Robots of Death" as a drill crew member with "robophoobia? Many didnt like Rev of the Cybe but i loved it and Ark in space, that curved set they used every inch as it wasnt that long and drops off and you see the actors step off of it accidentally in camera!! haha Same thing happened on "Seinfeld" where the video shop scene, the old ladies step down in the shot.

Even though this was the season finale, another story (the season 13 opener) was filmed at the end of this season and held over. This has been happening for several years...
Sarah Jane’s first story (‘The Time Warrior’) was shot as part of season 10 & held over, which is why her hairstyle changed between then and ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs.’
Similarly, ‘Robot’ was shot at the end of season 11, after ‘Planet of the Spiders,’ & was held over to start this season, which is why it feels more like a Pertwee story, plus the presence of the UNIT cast.
That’s why the Philip Hinchcliffe production era & tone didn’t really start until ‘The Ark in Space,’ the second story of this season.

True story: a few years ago I had some time to kill in a once glorious pub/club called 'Fab Cafe' in Leeds, UK (now sadly defunct). It's theme was retro/sci-fi/nostalgia and it was glorious.
Vintage series would show on the screens all night, regardless of what music was playing.
On this occasion, it was episode 3 of Revenge of the Cybermen. I know it was merely happy coincidence, sheer serendipity, but the shoot-out between the Vogans and the Cybermen syncs remarkably well with the theme from 'Rawhide'.

Gosh, Liz Sladen’s performance as Sarah Jane was always so charming. Just the little things she did. And also, I love a character who can be terrified but still try to push through, even if they have to tremble all the way.

  • @marinedalek
    @marinedalek ปีที่แล้ว +9

The music for this story is interesting - it's largely by Carey Blyton who also scored Doctor Who and the Silurians and Death to the Daleks. However Philip Hinchcliffe, the producer, didn't think certain parts were scary enough and so overdubs of more "traditional" synthesiser elements were made at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The overdubs were made by Peter Howell... more on him later!

Cyberleader Christopher Robbie (previously hurled around another studio in Dr Who by Wendy Padbury, whilst playing The Karkus in 'The Mind Robber') would also be a regional news presenter in the UK. And his delivery seems just about apt for that. Going full camp with hands on hips, on the other hand, probably wouldn't have gone down well during the weather.

Much as the Doctor snarks at Harry from time to time, I'm glad to know that behind the scenes Tom Baker and Ian Marter got on really well. Apparently they even worked together for a time on a Doctor Who Movie concept that never happened.
As for the story I always thought it has been a pity that the Glittergun never made an appearance. For example maybe the Vogons could have had one stored in a vault or something from the first time they faught the cybermen.
It's a bit of a pity that NewWho has dropped the toxic gold story element from the cybermen.

Tom Baker kept what they had worked on for the script, and just a few years ago dug it back out, and completed it as a novel called Scratchman. It is very good, and very much in the style of the Hinchcliffe/ Holmes era. It's a great read, but part of me thinks I should have bought the audio book so Tom Baker himself could read it to me.

  • @AtariDad
    @AtariDad ปีที่แล้ว +2

The original version of the script was actually called Return of the Cybermen and it had quite a few differences between the version that ultimately made it to air. The main difference being that far more of it took place on the Nerva Beacon and in place of Vogan it was simple human miners who inhabited the asteroid. The script was rewritten by Robert Holmes, who added the Vogans and made some other changes. Big Finish recently adapted the script to an audio drama and, in my opinion, it was actually a much better story. The writer who adapted that script also posted a deleted original ending from the script which ended with the TARDIS starting to go crazy and time starting to move in reverse. As the Doctor tries to figure out what's going on, he's visited by the Time Lord Messenger from Genesis of the Daleks who informs him that his interference with the Daleks' creation is echoing throughout history, even in his own timeline. He goes onto explain this being the reason for various contradictions between the main show and expanded universe materials before telling him that his current timeline is about to become redundant. The Doctor, Sara, and Harry then blink out of existence before the TARDIS materializes in Nerva Beacon, leading to the beginning of this story. The writer in question said the ending was cut for being "very silly," but myself and other fans think that it should have been left intact.

In defence of the Special effects. I think the average budget of Doctor Who back in the 1970's was around £5,000 (read it one Doctor who book or another). That wouldn't get you Matt Smith's toenail these days. A young designer called Matt Irvine who joins the show behind the scenes had to learn to be very inventive with shampoo bottles and numerous other household objects to get that Science Fiction look. Glad you're enjoying Tom. Even on the occasions when the show isn't quite up to scratch he is still always watchable.

Pretty much all of the season 12 stories were conceived by outgoing producer Barry Letts and script editor Terence Dicks (particularly Genesis of the Daleks), so it wasn’t until Season 13 that producer Philip Hinchcliffe and script editor Robert Holmes could use their own ideas and concepts for what they really wanted to see on the TV screen! For me, every story bar one (story 4) is a stone cold classic, with its mix of gothic horror, inventive ideas (some original and some which are plagiarised) and superb performances by Tom Baker, Lis Sladen and Ian Marter!
I think you’ll enjoy it! And remember, If you get too frightened, there’s always your sofa you can hide behind! Lol.

When I watched this on first broadcast, I thought it was a reasonably good story (well I was 12 or so), but in hindsight its always felt like there was a bit too much filler in the story. As a tighter shorter story it could easily have been a classic. Of course as the first Cybermen story since the 1960s (some 10 years before), they didnt get the Cybermen quite right and I think the head weapon idea didn't quite work. The voices weren't treated as much as needed either. The caves scenes were just a little too well lit to generate as much atmosphere as those scenes needed. The Vogan face masks work better on the 21 inch low resolution CRT TVs as well.

The Cybermen's aversion to gold (later exhumed as a callback in 'Nightmare in Silver') is immediately rendered farcical. According to the Doctor, Voga was instrumental in the development of the 'Glittergun' that won the Cyber-War, yet the Vogans make no use of this seemingly essential bit of kit. And our biomechanical chums beam down to the planet (the very witchy Wookey Hole) and wander about, oblivious to the fact they're on a rock made of the stuff, or that any of it might be floating about as particles in the air. It's Dr Who at its B-Movie base-level; though I do recall house mates at college sitting through it in fits of laughter back in the 1990s. It's a pity, because on paper that's a lot of back-story to work with.

Revenge of the Cybermen is a complete mess of a story and one of the biggest reasons is because of what it does with the Cybermen. I think the moment that sums it up best is when the Doctor just nonchalantly blurts out that it's the Cybermen they're dealing with. I understand Cybermen being in the story is spoiled by the title, but they still should've built it up a bit more and presented them as a big deal, it's their first story in 7 years! The way the Doctor works out that it's the Cybermen doesn't work either and is really stupid. Supposedly the Cybermen have an aversion to gold and died out after attacking Voga, the planet of gold, at the end of the "Cyber wars". The issue is that the Cybermen's weakness being gold has never been mentioned before, so what should be a lightbulb moment for both us and the Doctor feels really weird and unnatural instead. I also really hate the Cybermen's new voices. Gone are the mechanical, emotionless voices of the 60s, to be replaced by... normal human voices that are way too emotional. it's not even the voices though, the Doctor goads the Cyber leader into making mistakes several times in this story, but that shouldn't work on a Cyberman because they have no emotions. The Doctor takes every opportunity to take the piss out of the Cybermen, but this really undermines their threat. If the Doctor isn't scared of them or taking them seriously, why should we? There's no tension. They really should've just created an entirely new monster for this story because from their aversion to gold (which is a really lame weakness), their overly emotional voices and shoddy characterisation that forgets these are supposed to be emotionless cyborgs, the Cybermen in this story don't feel like Cybermen in any way.
The plot itself is really weak and full of holes too. The Cybermen want to destroy Voga for obvious reasons, but why do they need an agent to kill people on the beacon? Why is that necessary for them to be able to take it over? Why not just attack the beacon and force a group of humans to go down to the planet to blow it up? That still doesn't work though because why can't the Cybermen just fire a bunch of missiles at Voga to destroy it? I mean, it's a planet made of gold, one of the softest metals, surely it's within their capabilities to do so? Also, their plan to kill off most of the crew on the beacon is really shortsighted as well. If something went wrong, they wouldn't have anyone else to send to Voga. To make matters worse, their agent is actually a double agent working for the Vogans, which makes no sense because why is he killing so many people for the Cybermen then? If he is working for the Vogans and setting up a trap for the Cybermen, why do the Vogans seem so ill prepared and why are their weapons so ineffective? They're literally on a planet made of gold, why aren't they firing bullets made of gold at the Cybermen? Also, if gold is so detrimental to Cybermen, how can they be roaming around Voga, the planet of gold, so easily? Shouldn't their systems start to malfunction as soon as they land?
It's a huge shame because season 12 as a whole is really good with two stone cold classics (The Ark in space and Genesis of the Daleks) and two solid stories (Robot and The Sontaran Experiment), but Revenge of the Cybermen ends it on a real low note. It's especially unfortunate because it wasn't meant to be the final story of this season. The first story of the next season, Terror of the Zygons, was actually meant finish off this season, but was held off for season 13 because the BBC wanted to start airing Doctor Who towards the end of the year instead of the beginning as had become the norm. As a result, there's only 3 months between the last episode of this season and the first episode of the next, so they felt they had to hold Terror of the zygons back to give the production team some leeway as they prepared for the quick turnover and put stories together for the next season. It's a real shame because Terror of the Zygons is another classic and would've ended the season in a much better way.

two great quotes from this serial:
"HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN EMBICILE' One of the greatest lines in Doctor Who
    and
" You've no home planet, no influence, nothing! You're just a pathetic bunch of tin soldiers skulking about the galaxy in an ancient spaceship!" such a great 4th Doctor Line!

Loved the reaction, but it’s a rubbish story to end an otherwise strong season (with two 10/10s in it - Ark in Space and Genesis). Almost the worst classic Who Cyberman story.
Anyway on to the two most consistently brilliant Who seasons ever of Classic or new Who
