Romana carries this story so hard. Rallying the Anethans, standing up to the Skonnans, wearing one of her all-time best outfits and having her own sonic screwdriver. Even River's sonic was a gift from the Doctor while Romana went and made her own. Queen. The Horns Of Nimon gets a lot of hate but the Greek mythology parallels and the legendary ham from Graham Crowden as Soldeed alone make it incredibly endearing to me. "The Nimon be praised!"
Yes, he actually turned it down due to the 3 year commitment and that’s why Ian Marter was cast as Harry as they thought he could handle the physical stuff for that version of The Doctor.
Graham Crowden was one of those actors who truly enhanced whatever part he was playing. I knew him best from A Very Peculiar Practice, alongside Peter Davison (and other Doctor Who alumni), and the brilliant Waiting For God.
The woman playing Teka is popstar Sophie Ellis Bextor's Mum. She's called Janet Ellis, and was later a Blue Peter presenter. Fun fact: the co-pilot splits his trousers at 14:56.
Other related fun fact - Janet Ellis hosted a BBC Children's show called "Jigsaw" - which also featured the vocal talents of John Leeson - the 'real voice' of K-9!
I'll never stop laughing at guard from the spaceship when he falls and his trousers split. I met June Hudson, the costume designer for this episode earlier this year. She's adorable and was very complimentary about my outfit
@@matthewt1772 LOL! In one episode of "Waiting For God", his 'partner in crime' Diana Trent (played by Stephanie Cole) referred to him as "Doctor Who"! (Because she was never sure WHERE his mind would be off to when he was off on one of his "mind adventures" (climbing mountains, escaping from a WW2 POW camp, etc.). I'm sorry, But I do NOT remember which episode that was.
Graham Crowden who played Soldeed in this 4 parter was one of four actors to consider for the role of the Doctor when Jon Pertwee was leaving Dr.Who. In addition Crowden was a veteran stage and movie actor. He was in two of the three movie trilogy of Lindsey Anderson seminal works which were O'Lucky Man and Britannia Hospital.
This is one of the most cult Doctor Who episodes ever! Such an interesting stories with a over the top villain. Soldeed is one I quote often and the Nimon remains a fan favourite referenced in several stories. In fact I assumed that it was the villain in Wild Blue Yonder when I first saw that episode.
I had hoped you'd notice the portly co-pilot's trousers SPLIT after the Nimon "zapped" him. That incident just adds to the outlandishness of this particular production.
Don't know if you noticed, but the pilot (accidentally) splits his pants during his death scene at the end of episode two. The Nimon are name-dropped in the Matt Smith episode The God Complex as an example of another minotaur species. I'm sure someone else has already mentioned that the six part story that was supposed to be the finale of this season, Shada, had to be abandoned partway through filming due to an industrial strike at the BBC. There is a version of Shada available for viewing where the uncompleted bits are filled in with animation and the voices of the original actors (wherever possible)
Romana's Red Hunting Jacket was apparently to Provoke the Bull-Like Nimon-Bulls traditionally charging when they see this colour (although this has been subsequently shown to be nonsense!)
I have been looking forward to seeing what you would think of Soldeed and his over the top acting. I live for it myself. One of the reasons I love this story. Also, I think Jess understands why Tom Baker is such an icon to a lot of the fandom.
This story gets a lot of hate and ridicule but it’s one of my all time favourites! What can I say, I love a campy over the top villain XD Also, Romana really got to shine in this!
Congrats on 100K, Sesska! And don’t worry, I felt the same way with K9’s voice in this season. I found it very jarring too. But thankfully, John Leeson returns as K9 in the next season.
So could Romana II be a future cosplay? Btw I hope you've got a nice spot picked out for the 100K play button that will soon be on its way to you. I'm very much looking forward to the grand unveiling. 😃
Her red outfit is based on the British fox hunting outfit and the man camping it up for England is Jonathan Pryce a really quite big actor, best known for the film Brazil and in Game of Thrones as the high sparrow.
The girl in the background while Lalla Ward talks strategy with lead Anethans Simon Gipps-Kent and Janet Ellis (who both have other connections to the show through the work in children's TV) is serving every 'concerned face' she can; almost as if thinking: 'My agent is going to love this...'
I love this story. Graham Crowden manages to outham Tom and by playing it as a straight, dramatic role, Lalla Ward steals the show and is really the Doctor.
Brilliant timing with this reaction. It was originally broadcast over Christmas time in 1979 and I've always felt it has a pantomime feel to it so I often watch it at this time of year. Romana is fantastic in this as well.
Of course you immediately recognize the Nimon from the 11th Doctor story "The God Complex"! They don't look quite as scary, but serve the purpose of Minotaur stand in. It's funny, I always think of this story being bad, but I enjoy it every time! I was always a fan of Classical myths and as soon as I figured out what they're doing I get an extra charge! I really like how Romana takes charge in this! She's progressing from sidekick to equal! 99.9k!!! So close!!!!!
Fun fact: when the Eleventh Doctor has defeated the Minotaur in The God Complex, he finds out that it is a distant cousin of the Nimon, the minotaur in this story.
I know it's premature and slightly off topic but congrats on 100k subs. I think I joined on right on the brink of the 11th Doctor's reactions and haven't stopped since. Looking forward to what's next.
“Why is he calling it like it’s a kitty-kat?” Because it’s AWESOME, that’s why! That’s the answer to every WTF in this story. You really have to be in just the right mood for it, but when you are… Seriously, though, I don’t think anyone has ever had as much fun doing anything as Graham Crowden had playing Soldeed in this story.
Been waiting a bit for you to make it to Tom Baker and The Honourable Lalla Ward's run of Series. Watching these Reactions is So Nostalgic for me. Tom Baker was my first Doctor and still my favorite. Well Sara Jane Smith was my first Companion, And I loved her, and others like Clara, Rose and Amy, However, Romana II still is my favorite companion and character in Doctor Who. If they gave her, her own spin-off show still to this today I would be glued to it ;) But At least I got the Gallifrey Audio Dramas. Can't wait for your next episode reactions. ;)
As a Doctor Who story, this is crap. What it is, however, is two of Britain's most eccentric old actors doing battle with each other. And I love this story for that reason alone. Forget the plot, forget the supporting cast, forget the monsters Tom Baker and Graham Crowden steal every scene they're in. This story never fails to cheer me up.
And so begins the final Dr Who story of the 1970s. I may not have been there at the start, but I was there to see it out! A peculiarity in that the dialogue sometimes feels like it could have been scripted by an AI prompt. The only AI on display here is K9, sadly. Fans would not be fans if they didn't let a full Nanosecond go by before revealing that Soldeed-actor Graham Crowden was once considered for the part of the Doctor. He gets a bit of flak for going over the top, but I think he looks positively restrained compared to Myra Frances earlier in the season.
Just wanted to celebrate with you re: the makeup touchup. The little things are worth celebrating, because little things are dominoes for big things. Anyway, I appreciate your taking pride in alll your accomplishments. Good reaction, too, by the way. Thank you for your time.
I remember this one 😀 It seemed quite scary at the time. This is of course a retelling of the story of the Minotaur. And yes I like the old K9 voice better
The thing to remember particularly about this era of Doctor Who was that often it was arch and had tongue firmly planted in cheek. 'Nimon' half tells a decent story. The rest of it is British character actors goofing around not taking anything remotely seriously. It wasn't long before the show reset itself back to seriousness after this.
As a really boring, cissy, non-campy boy, I gotta say I’m obsessed with your nails, hair and jumper, everything is on-point 😂 Great video as per usual. People who hate this one must lead very dull lives. I mean it’s absolutely awful but in the best possible way ❤
Look, I've split my trousers before now, but it takes a special kind of performance to do it on national television on a Saturday night. Some people might call it silly, but I'm calling bull.
Normally I would wait until you've finished a story before watching both parts but I had to make an exception in this case, as it's one of the all-time great 'so bad it's good' Doctor Who stories with the marvellous overacting from Soldeed and the co-pilot. The latter actually came up with the 'weakling scum' line himself and also split his trousers during his death scene. You seem to be really getting into that and the costuming which is great.
OK,I see New York today 18/12 is in the middle of a torrential rainstorm. No Christmas snow then.I think that Peter Davisons Doctor picks up a bit,He became a bit more whimsical and something out of a pantomime.Have you tried looking at BLAKES SEVEN,a great BBC series an alternative look at a1984 fascist society in space with "Dirty Dozen" style rebels.
This story gets some (quite fair) hate, but I always had a soft spot for it. Romana is awesome and love the coat. The doctors so snarky, and soldeed is so over the top. For some it’s too much. But for me the idea of conquering the galaxy is so over the top in itself only someone as dramatic of soldeed could truly dream of it. So it works. At least soldeed is having fun and living his best life all the time.
There’s also some good sci-fi ideas here, digging a black hole, the decayed skonnan empire, the Nimon journey of life thing explained in the later parts. Another thing I don’t want to spoil. K9 getting buried in the list of nonfunctional tardis components. Extending the tardis doors. Lots of great little nuggets.
The Horns of Nimon tends to get lumped alongside Underworld as the worst story of the Tom Baker era. For me, while there are some interesting concepts and ties to Greek mythology, this is ultimately a serious story that gets played for laughs, especially by Graham Crowden as Soldeed, the most OTT and laughably ridiculous villain in Doctor Who history (he even makes Tom Baker look like the straight man). It even has the Doctor giving K9 the kiss of life for some reason! I distinctly remember watching this for the first time and getting to the end of part one where the Doctor's clutching K9's head in mock terror as a planet (which looked more like a dog biscuit!) is hurtling towards the TARDIS scanner, and taking deep sigh and saying to myself afterwards, "Well, if the fate of the entire universe was in the hands of these buggers, then God help us!" Fun fact: Graham Crowden was actually in consideration for the Fourth Doctor but he declined since he was more passionate about theater work.
Love that you're enjoying this story; it gets slagged quite a bit, but I think it's so over-the-top (especially Graham Crowden as Soldeed) that it's enjoyable. The Nimon was referenced in passing by the Eleventh Doctor in "The God Complex" as being related to the Minotaur in that story. And 100% agree with you on Romana's red coat. 👍
What's that saying? When the script is bad good actors overact? He is actually a good actor. He was offered the job of Doctor before Tom was offered it. Oh and pointing out Romana's boots when something else was standing out....I can't be as mature as you are.
Will you be reacting to Shada after this story? It was the lost story that got the animation treatment and should have been the final story of this season.
I like them all tbh. The Marian Conspiracy feels a bit First Doctor-ish but with the Sixth Doctor instead, which is neat. Whispers of Terror and ...ish are good if you like 6 and Peri as a pair. The Spectre of Lanyon Moor is highly recommended, he meets the Brigadier.
The only reason I was interested in this story was seeing your reaction to the outfits. Especially that one guard with the sleeves. :) I disagree about Romana's outfit though. She looks like she's going fox hunting.
According to Tom Baker, Soldeed was played by a stage actor who didn't understand the difference between acting for the stage and acting for TV. He overacted. So much drama! :D
Well there seems to be a large contingent of fans of this serial on here, so all I will say is....not my cup of tea. Thank you At least Jess is having fun with it so that's a plus.
Unfortunately these Tom Baker episodes (1979) are quite poor, just treading water. His last 2 stories are better but his career by now was doomed.Even though 5 years later he appeared as a great character in Blackadder 2 he couldn't shake off being type cast as the Doctor.
It’s classic Who’s own version of an overacting competition. Even Baker gets a run for his money here…. In all seriousness at this point it was a show desperately in need of a change in approach, style and focus. Wonder when that would come?
Oh dear… i do not like this story. Underworld maybe my least favourite story from the 4th doctor, Horns of Nimon is second least favourite. The quality is pretty bland nimon themselves are look pretty awkward and no disrespect to Graham Crowden bless him. But the character he’s playing is very annoying and really gets on my nerves. “Just shut up please! “
Romana? Nonsense. This story is all about GRAHAM CROWDEN STEALING EVERY SCENE HE'S IN.
I'm reminded of a review I read once that said "The Doctor is great in this story, it's her sidekick with the scarf I'm not sure about"
This was one of favorite episodes growing up, and Romana was a big part of that.
Fun trivia note: The villain of this story was almost cast as the 4th Doctor before Tom Baker was.
Oh for what could have been! 😂
You beat me to it! lol
So we could have had Tom Baker playing Soldeed instead?
Yes, he actually turned it down due to the 3 year commitment and that’s why Ian Marter was cast as Harry as they thought he could handle the physical stuff for that version of The Doctor.
Graham Crowden was one of those actors who truly enhanced whatever part he was playing. I knew him best from A Very Peculiar Practice, alongside Peter Davison (and other Doctor Who alumni), and the brilliant Waiting For God.
Soldeed is an icon and a such a fitting antagonist to end 1970s Classic Who.
The woman playing Teka is popstar Sophie Ellis Bextor's Mum. She's called Janet Ellis, and was later a Blue Peter presenter.
Fun fact: the co-pilot splits his trousers at 14:56.
In fact Sophie was born only a few months before this story was made
Other related fun fact - Janet Ellis hosted a BBC Children's show called "Jigsaw" - which also featured the vocal talents of John Leeson - the 'real voice' of K-9!
And Jigsaw, we were all there for her legs, don't deny it.
She wasn’t on Blue Peter, she was presenting Jigsaw at this point. She didn’t join Blue Peter until April 1983.
With these first 2 parts, you have now finished 1970s Doctor Who! (The final 2 parts aired in January 1980).
I'll never stop laughing at guard from the spaceship when he falls and his trousers split. I met June Hudson, the costume designer for this episode earlier this year. She's adorable and was very complimentary about my outfit
This is a brilliant, fun, silly, campy story. Graham Crowden totally rocks as Soldeed.😂👍
No scenery left unchewed!
He played such a different character in Waiting for God; a sweet and naive old man in a retirement community. Worth watching if you can find it.

Six year old me watched this back in 1979 and I was hooked. What a fabulous story!
Someone may have commented but the main young lady among the Anethans is Janet Ellis, mother of the singer Sophie Ellis-Bexter.

The Greatest Worst episode of Doctor Who, such a fun time.
Sesska, One Piece when?
Well there seems to be a large contingent of fans of this serial on here, so all I will say is....not my cup of tea. Thank you
At least Jess is having fun with it so that's a plus.
Really is a rubbish story. One of the few Baker stories I won't watch...
Graham Crowden is normally a better actor than this but he's hilarious as Soldeed
