- Affordable grow lights that work! These simple shop lights are all you need to grow successful seedlings inside the home. Keep this particular type of bulb consistently 2-3 inches above the seedlings and move them up as the seedlings grow.
Everything in this video can be found at a large hardware store. I purchased my wire rack at Target - but I have seen similar ones at the hardware store also. I found these Amazon links that may be helpful -

Thank you for this video I've been struggling with led lights for a couple of years, simply because they're cheap to run,but I never realised that you can use fluorescent tubes too,I grow mostly vegetables seedling to grow on to potting up stage,well some veg like, aubergines and pepper family take a long time to get big enough to be planted out even into the greenhouse,your idea has given me a new insight and taken the guesswork from LEDs,thank you so much,
Walmart sells a 4 foot led shop light for 20 bucks. No bulbs to buy or hardware, so it's cheaper and puts out almost twice the light. Less money on operating as well. They are so efficient your plants will grow way faster. So plan accordingly. Grow on my friend!!!

This is why I love your channel! I live in zone 5 and wanted to start some flower seeds but then I priced the grow lights and knew that wasn’t going to happen because of the price. Grow lights are expensive because they are marketed as grow lights.
but there are many lights and shop lights and other flourescent and LED lights that give off the same Lumens and Kelvin ratings that you'd find on plant lights (referred to as warm and cool in the video).
Also keep in mind that if you're just growing seeds , you won't need some higher-tech or higher cost lights like if you're trying to do an entire growing cycle indoors (seed/seedling/mature plants/flowering/fruiting etc)
I purchased my rack at Aldi for about $40. a few years ago. Keep an eye out for it as it is a”special”only and is only offered once a year.

This is awesome! You should seriously make a tiny e-book out of this, and charge $10 or. You could sell it to ppl who are new to you. Either way: It would seriously be worth having it in text form just to feel 100% comfortable getting this done. You could also use this exact info as a landing page - you could be that person, out of all the growers, who ACTUALLY show us everything. I have watched countless similar videos and *never* seen someone show us exactly how to do this.
Thanks for not doing sponsored content! Although cost isn’t a big inhibitor for me, I know that it is for a lot of people. Unfortunately a lot of gardening TH-camrs are promoting very expensive grow light systems and just very expensive gardening stuff in general. It’s just not necessary! You can have a beautiful garden without all the fancy tools.

Almost exactly what I do. I also bought foil faced 1/2 inch 4x8 styrofoam insulation, 3 sheets will totally surround the shelving unit. The foil bounces the light around and seems to help.

I got an LED Hyper Tough shoplight 5000 lumen daylight at Walmart for $18.99. Draws less electricity and comes with chain and S hooks. Happy Gardening
That was a great video! Simple and easy to understand. My boyfriend made me a stand out of PVC pipe and a board. He drilled holes in the PVC pipe so I could put the chain closer and further away from the plants. Very cheap alternative to a shelf.

I was so excited and had my husband watch this too. Went to Lowe's and Home Depot and you can't even BUY fluorescent lighting anymore! Now what!? Everything is LED.
LED works well, and fluorescent bulbs have mercury and recycling locations for them are not widespread.
This information is so helpful to me! My husband surprised me with a grow light for Christmas and I have yet to have figured out how to hang it, where, etc. This takes all the mystery out of it for somebody who just wants to start a tray of seeds. Thank you so much!!!

SO glad to see this video. I already have my lights, but it was a struggle to figure out what I actually needed vs the bells and whistles that were recommended by others. I ended up with something similar and it's nice to see affirmation that the simple and cheap option really is just fine from someone who has been successful with it for years. In going this route I'll be able to start hundreds (thousands??) of plants before my season starts, as opposed to spending the same amount of money on a single 3ft specialty light and rig that would have given me space for maybe 100 very cramped seedlings. I'm also happy that others may find your video and have less difficulty than I did!

Thank you so much for the video on shop lights. I'm new to starting seeds indoor. I already have two shelving units because I'm a quilter. So, I have extra space to condense my fabric to free up one or two shelves.
The only seeds I've started in the past were zinna which I placed directly outside until desired size then planted in our flower beds.
