Light therapy is recommended for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (aka SAD). In parts of the world days can be quite short during the winter.

We’re all enjoying these glimpses into each other’s gardening lives and I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering when part 2 of the container gardens will air? Keep up the great fun/work! It’s wonderful to keep up on garden tips and dreams while enduring snow and freezing rain here in Alberta Canada! Thank you for all you do!

Enjoyed seeing all the different beautiful seed starting setups. I got a used "Outside the box" shed/greenhouse that I was so excited to start seeds in, but some little critter got into all my seedlings and pretty much destroyed them all !! The same thing happened in my four shelf outdoor covered greenhouse. I'm so discouraged from last year and don't know if I should bother this year or not! Any suggestions???

Don’t give up. Try making a “hot sauce” and spray it around. On the containers and maybe where you think they came in. I made one with water and pepper flakes and used my vitamix. When plants are bigger I have sprayed plants. You could try sprinkling with diatomaceous earth. Maybe traps. Good luck.

I love that you are bringing in photos from other gardeners so we get to tour their gardens and set ups. It’s like having a day of garden tours in one’s town. Something that used to actually happen. One of my favorite memories was a day of garden touring on Sauvie Island outside of Portland. Many of them had areas where they had let grass get high-above knee height-and then mowed pathways and little rooms with seating and often their was a view of some sort from seating area. One Gardner had made her “room” around a tall dead tree with white bark and hung a chandelier from one of-the branches and underneath was a bistro set. It was beautiful.

How crazy was that to sit with my cup of coffee and turn on Garden Answer (morning ritual) and see my ugly basement front and center on my screen. When I took those photos almost a year ago, never would I dream I'd be on Garden Answer. I'm looking at the photos just laughing at my set up with an old ironing board I pulled from the metal scrap pile, tables everywhere. Organized chaos for sure. But a gardener has to do what a gardener has to do. And "greenhouse" on my husband's to-do list? We're on it! Carried all the windows (70+) from our barn into the basement to start scraping and painting them to get a jump on our soon to be spring project. Also picked up a small (very cool) vintage woodstove today to heat it. Happy gardening! ~ Lauren, South Hampton, NH

I love seeing so much creativity with starting a garden! One day I will do this. I have been scared to start planting anything because I don't know much and am afraid that I would have to move a plant to another area if I don't like it or the plant is not working in the location I chose but watching Garden Answer is so inspirational. Laura is not afraid to move things around or replant something if it is not working or try something new. I finally think I could do this! Thank you so much!! I am so glad I found your channel!

There were a few very good tips here. A small greenhouse is very easy to maintain and heat especially a lean-to like I have against the garden shed. I haven’t tried heating it during winter, only early spring. I also use it as a drying shed. Bootstrap Farmer and Greenhouse Mega Store have been great places for heavy duty seed trays etc.
Biggest tip is don’t start too early. Yes, up-potting is expensive, time consuming and space hogs. Yes, it’s difficult to wait, but I looked at last year’s journal and realized I still need to wait at least another week to start. I had a jungle last year. Running around covering transplants from frost is getting slowly written out of the game plan. I also found out many plants did better planted later. Work smarter-not harder.
Love our wire racks with wheels. The 2’ wide are great for smaller places and fit perfectly in front of windows and can wheel them out to patio when it’s time to harden off.
Checking out that gal with zip lock winter sow! Interesting! I love the WS!
Thanks for doing this as it condensed a lot of know how from others in a small bit of time.😊

I did a simple plastic shelf and put it agains a window and used binder twine to string the led shop lights . I used reflective survival blankets at the back and side of the shelf and it really increases the light .I bought the foil blankets at the dollar store for $1.25 a lot cheaper than extra lights and power during the low light days.

Origami brand folding shelving racks work really well for seed starting. They have wheels, are sturdy, and they fold flat for storage in the off season. I got mine last year and it fits 6 of the GrowEase trays. I use clip on grow lights with wired movable arms so I can adjust them as needed.

Hi Laura! It was fun seeing the different set ups that people use for seed starting. I got a couple of ideas from them and may even try the Ziploc method. Those metal shelves are definitely not Bakers Racks. LOL! They make a nice set up though. I have 3 Bakers Racks that my husband made for me out of wrought iron and they're much more decorative. I've thought about getting grow lights and using a shelf, or two, on one of them for seed starting. Thank you so much for sharing!

💚💜 haha love how you say 'grown up' sounds like Benjamin your mirror image 😄!! That lady with a jungle in her house is just like mine 😆. I had to rescue 2 kittens last summer so idk how it's gonna work this time around, but I can say this I will make it work!! I think that's why I don't care for formal is because I just love knowing that what I do and how I do it on some limb comes out looking like a million bucks lol!!! Formal to me is to easy I'd that makes sence. Nothing wrong at all with formal I just like thinking out the box basically making things harder on myself lol. I love Elizabeth channel ❤️

I started tomatoe and pepper seeds for the first time last year and had a huge fail! I ended up buying starts at the garden store. However I haven’t given up and trying again this season! Thank you for doing this! Great tips!

Gonna try baggies for winter sowing ... So easy to store year to year. Now I have to wait for 3 feet of snow to thaw. Staying cozy with a cup of coffee in -30C.

Yes we always keep the 4 inch pots as well to start seedlings. I make sure to wash them all out in case. I have reused some for years. Great video of others growing seedlings. Just great ideas.

My set up is not pretty but I used PVC pipe to hold up a 4 ft shop light with grow light bulbs and can fit two seed starting trays under it long ways. I set a mirror behind it the past two years. I still need to practice with it. I didn’t have wonderful success growing , managing pests, hardening things off, and planting. This video gives me inspiration to try again this year even though I’m busier.

These are really neat! My seed starting setup this year is an aerogarden brand LED seed starting light over a 72 cell Bonnie brand self-watering tray. They sit on one of the tables in my guest room/office. I use a timer and keep the light on for 15 hours. The room has a ceiling fan, but I may add an extra fan if I feel like they need it. I’m in 7A and currently have cool weather crops just beginning to germinate that will be planted in early March. Then I’ll do my warm weather veggies after them to plant out in mid/late May. Our springs tend to be long and the temps oscillate a lot so even though our last frost date is the end of April, our soil won’t be warm enough to keep peppers or eggplants happy for a few more weeks.

I have never started seeds because I didn't think it was possible without some type of greenhouse. So good to see that you can do this anywhere in your home even your basement. I think I want to give it a try! Thank you so much for the inspiration. Keep up the good work!

Really enjoyed seeing this video with your comments Laura- thank you! This will be my 2nd season of seed starting in my basement laundry room. Last year I was excited to get up early every day (and I'm not a morning person;) to water and check on my baby seedlings! Can't wait to do it all over again!

I loved them all! I’m the type that will pick out my favorite part of each one and put it together… so a room with terrarium built into an exterior wall, a blue wall & rug, normal furniture like a baker’s rack, the glass door hutch, shelves and tables with grow lights, wheels, mini fans and cords hidden. Plus small table top glass growers with lights. And I also like to start seeds in hanging baskets…I love the black pipes Miah put up over the windows for Jess on Roots and Refuge! How awesome would it be for us to start a trend of repurposed furniture into seed starting setups that look like normal furniture when not being used?! 🤔😀 Thanks for the inspirational video!

Thank you for showing small set ups. Mine is the gardners supply small bamboo set up. It's in my office/spare bedroom. I greatly appreciate the book shelf shown as I don't have extra space and need a more "aesthetic" set up. Now I'm on the hunt for an inexpensive shelf for next year!
