I love how the robots have no frame of reference for what an "animal" is, so they don't know that cats are just silly little guys who sleep, roll around, eat hot tuna and lie. it'd be like if we met an alien and we all assumed it was as intelligent as us, only to later find out that's it's, like, a space cow that the greeblegrobbles raise as livestock.
The funny thing is, iirc, it's the same way for cats. Like, cats don't see humans as different from themselves, they see humans as big, bald, stupid kitten that need to be taught how to hunt and stuff.
@@vordjoncus IIRC, cats have an inteligence of a 5-8 years old child, as opposed to 3-5 for dogs. They treat hunans as members od the pack, essentially, but evolved special things to coexist with us, like meowing, which mimics cries of a human child for sympathy points. So, cats see that we provide food, shelter and affection technically for no reason, so they have a very vague reaction of trying to pay it back/contribute to the pack, which is why you find dead mice under your carpets and then the cat looks smug.

@@JustQerq I think you overestimate the mental capacity of a three year old. 5-8 is more accurate as a three year olds mental capabilities are quite lacking, as they are three years old.
@@markrexington8397 according to some studies that I found the average intelligence of an adult cat is comparable to a 2 year old human toddler.
People are understandably focused on the cat, but the animation work on the robots is so good as well. They have such a jovial, emotional vibe to them and the expressions complete their almost cartoony charm.
I was hoping somebody would mention this. They all walk around in such a gangly way, like they're all teenagers who just went through a big growth spurt. They're such doofuses.

Like after we’ve played this game for hours, it really hits you with a wave of emotions to see actual sunlight covering the areas we’ve explored and all of the bots we know reacting to it

Fun fact: when cats blink slowly it's the equivalent of them saying "I trust you" as in I trust you enough to shut my eyes around you. So as the cat left the city, they turned and said they trusted the Companions, or B-12. Either is cute

Honestly!! B12 gave me the new jacket, and then said “here I’ll take this off of you” and I was like “what do you mean I just got that!”

@@sidekic1109 there's a lot of cool worldbuilding that hasn't been explored, so the game is very open to big DLCs. I feel like the devs did that on purpose to test the waters, and if the game was well received it would get DLC.
Also yeah the jacket stays with you through different playthroughs. And if you go back to a different chapter to get a memory you missed, you get the jacket then, so it feels a lot less weird
The fact that Doc has a child yet is a robot so can't reproduce,means that the robots adopt eachother and this makes me so happy

I'd like to point out for everyone that missed it, at the end, the little flicker on the screens to the left is implying the "B12" didn't get deleted, he went back into the circuits but now has access to all of the city.

You know what's interesting? The characters don't seem to actually speak English to the cat: in fact it might also be just speaking in the language *for* the cat. The text must only be for us to read, but to the cat B-12 is basically translating in cat-tongue! Technology really has surpassed.
They speak a robot language they made which B-12 translates for us/cat to understand, as explained in a memory. I don't know if this is what you were saying or not?

It's also explained when first eaching the slums as B-12 states that he'll try to translate between Cat and Guardian.
I guess if they have the technology to transfer a human consciousness to a robot, then understanding the brain well enough to know cat-language shouldn't be too hard.

there's a lot of interactions like that in the game. Some smile at you, some look at you in curiosity, etc
MY GOD I DIDN'T SEE THAT, I LOVE IT
After finishing the game, I laid down with B12 for a full hour before getting up, I emotionally crumbled, and felt distraught, which isn't very common for me, which just shows the amazing writing of this game, they got me to care enough about a tiny drone in 4 hours to make me feel like I lost a damn loved one.
i held it together when B12 died, the whole "deuteragonist makes a noble sacrifice" thing is sad but i kinda expected it... but then the damn cat laid down next to them. i think i'm dehydrated from how hard I sobbed.
@@bennothanlesbibutch9591 The best way to make deaths impactful is to show the consequences of it. If you kill a character and then just say "next scene" and move on, nobody's going to care, but if you show how it impacts the characters you've established, the grief they go through, it hooks into our natural empathy, and primes us to feel those emotions, even if it's just a cat.
@@bennothanlesbibutch9591 Also it is a fucking crime that they don't let you pick up B-12 and bring him to the credits, at least then he'd be able to see the outside in spirit, and the cat could keep the drone as a momento, since B-12 is most likely in the system now with that little blip at the end.

I really love how the robots love humans. It's a nice subversion from the usual robot stories where they rally against humanity for a plethora of reasons. It's also really cute that they like the cat.
The fact that the devs have a few cats in the office to study their movements is quite amazing like how in Ratatouille, they kept a bunch of rats in the office to look at how they move as well.
I don't know if this is a joke or not but it makes me think about how disney brought real lion and bear cubs in to study and help with animation lion king and brother bear

living with cats just makes this game so much better. how the cat acts after b-12 dies is heartbreaking, the nuzzle and slow blink almost made me cry. that's a cat that truly loves it's human. i'd say the cat's love and loyalty to b-12 is really realistic, cats aren't as outwardly loyal as dogs but if i had a dollar for every time one of my cats has actively tried to help me i'd be a rich man.

Based on the cat collapsing and then the fade out/cut to a door opening I'd guess the cat was probably down there for a while recovering and they just skipped over it since it would be unnecessary time wasted to show it. Although imo it felt somewhat abrupt and I half expected to be limping around for the first section before someone patched us up
The fact that the cat is smart enough to solve a puzzle without anyone training him how to really makes me wonder if all the cats we're seeing are actually humans transformed

Honestly cats are very self sufficient so it wouldn't surprise me if they just knew it. In the wild most cats don't even live in groups. Humans just don't see them as smart cause they don't listen to humans commands a lot of the time

Cats do that because they trust and/or love you. Think of it like "I feel so safe with you I can close my eyes and not fear for my safety".

I’m convinced that Stray is secretly a Kirby game or a game set in the Kirby universe for a number of reasons:
1) You play as a cute and lovable character that you would die to protect.
2) You get to meet a numerous amount of characters in the world with their own unique backstories and personalities.
3) You face against Cthulhu-esque monster and creatures for their sole purpose of making you their next meal.
4) You have a sidekick that helps you along your journey where at the end of the game, they either sacrifice themselves to save you and everyone or return to their own home.
But regardless on what you think, this game definitely deserves GOTY for the sole purpose of having a dedicated Meow button 🐱
5) The ending **REALLY** looks like the start of Kirby and the Forgotten Land

One of our cats snuck out of our front door. When I realized she was gone I freaked out, because we lived on a high-traffic road. But she had just jumped the gate into our backyard and was sitting at the back door meowing indignantly to be let back in.
Between this and goose game I think one of the most sublime gaming experiences is being able to interact with the world as a small bastard animal

On my playthrough, I didn't find the memory that explained where the Zurks came from, so they were just this unexplained and absolutely terrifying horror element.

When this game was announced I was hyped, but I kinda thought it would be a joke. Seeing this playthrough really just shows how much love is in this game. Not only for cats but for the work and gaming meowdium (I'm not sorry) as a whole. Genuinely a great game, an amazing story, and a lovely experience
I expected a fixed perspective puzzle game similar to gardens between with timelie elements, the fact the game is this big after 2 years of hearing almost nothing was the BEST surprise I could ask for

I love how at the end, when the cat looks at the camera, it does one long blink, which is a cats way of smiling, so its essentially thanking you for playing.

The meowing is probably for our sake, really. It's probably hard to get across genuine cat concern otherwise.
My 2feral cats I adopted when they were grown ups say other wise, in the morning they start crying and everytime they hear our voices
"Feral" cat means a former domesticated animal that went back to living without human supervision, but often near humans or inside their city. Just as "feral pigs" are not the same species as "wild hogs". And these cats don't look like wildcats... and as you said, adult cats only meow to get human attention.
While there is a species of wildcat in Japan -- the solitary Iriomote mountain cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis, a subspecies of the Bengal cat) that is endemic to the small island of Iriomote (Okinawa Prefecture). But those would never live in a ruined city.

While also pointing out that a wild cat wouldn't be in the city areas to begin with.
Loyalty is actually a thing for cats. Most cats would get depressed if their owners went missing for too long. To the point of refusing to eat and eventually getting sick because of the stress if nothing is done.
But yeah, some cats are little devils.
My brothers cat almost died when he went to college, she got so depressed that she refused to eat. She is healthy and happy now that he came home, but it really shows just how loyal they are
Many indie studios have pets in their office, so I can just imagine the idea for this game went like this:

this game was directed by Larry the cat, Chief Mouser of the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom at 10 Downing Street. A brown and white tabby, Larry directed the game as a metaphor for the current state of UK politics, as well as a representation of his own personal views on London city. An anonymous Member of Parliament purchased Larry a high end gaming PC so that Larry could play a role in the development of Stray from his residence at 10 Downing street. While Stray is his first title, Larry has always exhibited a passion for game design, and has expressed his joy at seeing his game on store shelves.

I love at the end the cat just slowly blinks(the sign of love for cats) which shows that the animators and all the people who have worked on this game really put their heart and soul into it. The fact that they were able to patch plot holes SO well is absolutely amazing. this is an amazing game 100% 11/10. Also the first game that got me actually stressed on how it would turn out, and crying like a baby
Cats can be pretty loyal. Our dog got attacked by a couple cats a long time ago and our cat jumped in to help her. Likewise our cat would always accompany us when one of us would be doing things outside and attack thinks like snakes and rats when they got close. My cousins also had a cat who ripped out a pitbull’s eyeball (he got injured as well) when the pit bull mauled their little dog.
It's not typical, since cats havent been domesticated as long as dogs or been bred to be as dependant on humans, but definitely there are cats who are fiercely loyal
@@PointsofData I don't think it's a matter of how long cats have been domesticated, so much as it is their personality. Some cats run from threats, some will attack it, just as some cats will run from a threat to a human, or attack the threat to protect their companion, cat or human
Exploration games are by far one of the best gaming experiences. Journey and Abzu are similar to this game and were also phenomenal.

The fall and the cat friends meowing is the single most heart breaking moment in all of gaming history... It always makes me get up and go cuddle my cat... I hope they are reunited at the end 🥺

if it makes you feel better some dude made an entire map of the game using math and figured out that at the end stray would just need to walk 20 seconds to the right to be reunited with his friends
Even the sons name is a back to the future reference! In the third movie, Marty goes back to 1885 and meets his Irish ancestor, who’s name is Seamus. Really cool and sweet :) awesome play through ^-^
His rainbow holo hat and red-orange vest are also a nod to Marty's future garb.

The third movie is underrated in my opinion
I'm so happy you played this game 😭😭 my only criticism of Stray is that there's no cat customization. But an orange cat becoming the savior of a new civilization thanks to its chaotic cat nature is somehow fitting
The fact that the cat is orange actually gives minor context clues (mostly that orange cats are male about 80% of the time) so they wouldn’t have wanted to add customization if they were intending on giving that little hint. Considering how the studio seems to feel towards cats, I feel that it’s actually pretty reasonable to think it may have been intentional.
As someone who owns an orange cat it is incredibly fitting
My issue is the speed run achievement is 2 hours. No room for forgetting passwords or routes

This cat seems really evolved, understanding signs, solving puzzles, talking to people through the bot, doing missions... I fully expect that when he gets back to his pack, they'll return to a fully functioning cat city, with cars and everything :D
Now I'm imagining the cat just strolls up to a bar and orders a beer saying "you won't BELIEVE what happened in the last few hours"

Cats slow blink to show their love to someone, so when stray slow blinked at the end at the city (b-12) he was saying love you to friend.
Some of this game is much better when you can read cat body language. At the very end when the cat is looking at the camera in the direction of the underground city, he does a long blink, which is a cat's way of declaring love and trust for the person their looking at.
He's literally saying I love you to the friends he made in the underground city.

And the worst thing is it happened completely out of nowhere, the last time something like this made me cry was at the end of endgame. And even there it wasnt nearly as intense as here.

Seamus was probably not a random name too bcs they bring up a Seamus McFly in BTTF3 as one of Marty's ancestors and a cautionary tale about being hot-headed! It's a neat little detail)

In terms of cat loyalty, I once had a cat that would get jealous lol. If he didn't like someone I was hanging out with then he would wedge himself between us. Like he was never mean, but any time someone sat next to me he would wedge himself between us and push them over. I actually had a breakup once cause the guy I was dating kept getting blocked by my cat ahhaha
as cute as the "i'll keep you in my ram" at the end was, it also implies that she is going to forget you if she ever turns off because the ram doesn't store anything without power

Not quite, if the thought was in RAM, then he'd always have the memory ready for quick access, if it was on the CPU cache or directly on the motherboard, then he'd be thinking of the cat at the specific moment
You know what I adore about the ending? It's the slow blink. Cats usually do that to show their content and love to someone. So when it turned their head to the camara and blinked slowly, they either blinked at the player or at the very city they just left.
I just find that very cute.
The relationship between b12 and the cat was actually very reminiscent of the relationship between me and my own cat, Ebony. She has saved my life twice at this point, like cat has for b12, so when b12 died and cat looked back with a sad face, I couldn't help but start crying. Hell, I'm still crying...

With all the neon lights scattering the city and the bamboo scaffoldings, I find it very cool.

Cats are almost perfectly adapted to survive after a human extinction event. They are cunning, resourceful of modest size so energy requirements are low. While still being incredibly agile and efficient hunters. And if there are other sentient creatures they can integrate themselves into their lives. Just as they did with humans. Cats affectively domesticated themselves rather than being domesticated by us. So unlike many dog breeds they don't need humans to survive, they rely on us because it's easier. Not because it's necessary

As a cat person, I very much had to fight the instinct to meow back at the cat every time I pressed the meow button.
This game proves that I am dramatically more emotionally invested in cats (and robots) than people. Every time I saw the cat limp or yeowl with pain, I felt like my heart was ripping in half!
... Here's hoping this becomes a series - or better yet, a genre. We need more cats in our games. We need more cats in general.
I always loved how sympathetic humans are towards animals when it comes to works of fiction. Mostly because animals can’t speak their mind and are generally less sentient than we are. Knowing that makes it hurt much more when bad things happen to the animal and they don’t know why.

Hate the time waste. Wants you to beat the game in 2 hours which might add up if you mess up. Then 1 hour catnap. Then replay the game again because you have to scratch in every chapter and switching chapter dosent count

*_Some lore for you!_* This game was originally called HK_Project, with it just being the kitty exploring the HK infrastructure (particularly inspired by Kowloon Walled City), something that is heavily reflected in the design of the environment you traverse. And I can vouch for the accuracy of this game as basically a 1:1 of Kowloon City. From the leaky rusty pipes, questionable puddles, cramped streets, neon signs, security booths, old style metal gates, even the awful mouldy wet cardboard - all things that most would not give a passing thought but screams home to me, which made this experience so much more surreal and enjoyable. I don't think theres any other game out there that mimics what old kowloon side look like as good as this one does.

So far, this reminds me of Rain World: an animal trying to survive in a dead place that they don't belong in. Granted, I've only watched 6 minutes of the video, so we'll see.
