*I've had mine for a Year and I'm Glad I bought it. I bought the 15mm G Lens and Never looked back, it's an AMAZING combo and now that I shoot it in 4K60fps, it's just AWESOME*
4K 120fps is exclusively what we use to film all of our motocross sport videos, it’s works great on the fx30. Film 4k120p in XAVCHS SLOG3/SGamut3.Cine at 1/400+ shutter ISO800 with an ND and in camera exposure typically +0.3 to +0.7, on the waveform (in monitor) expose highlights to 90-95% max (SLog3 max is 95% ire) and it looks great. Lol DCI 4k with Anamorphic’s looks fantastic on this camera too. I recommend the fx30 and fx3 to everyone as well, even my friends with RED Komodo’s lol
Great review as always Zach. I was turned off on this camera because of the EVF delete. I'm an old guy that prefers using the EVF for many reasons. Easy to see (focus and size), three point stability AND you can see in the bright sunlight. Keep up the good work🙏
Final bug beat is that it is crippled because Sony are protecting the FX3. Let me explain, the FX30 sensor is capable of delivering open gate, 6k30 BUT Sony don’t let us because they don’t want it to overshadow the FX3. Overall, the S5ii just does everything the FX30 can do but better and more user friendly. Unless you already have an EMount lenses, I wouldn’t recommend this camera.
Im about to sell my s5ii for the fx30 as i need a real estate lens and L mount simply doesnt have a wide enough range. Also the 4k60 crop is bloody annoying. *Update, sold my s5ii for the fx30 and i absolutely love it. Love the massive range of lens and the auto focus is significantly better. tracks so much better.
@@coin777 I won’t be able to shoot slo motion or speed ramping with 18mm as the 4k60 crop will bring it to a 27mm. I need a 10 - 11mm lens in reality. Which there is only one 11mm fisheye lens but then even that I will have to keep lens swapping to a 16mm for real estate photos as there is no crop. With the fx30 4k60 no crop and there is a plethora of 10 - 11 - 12mm primes and a lot cheaper to.
Isn't every camera a compromise? It is always a balance of tech compared to costs, even when you pay USD 8,000 for a camera. Interestingly, the FX30 had more features than the FX3 and A7Siii as e.g. the live streaming over USB-C is not an option on the full-frame brothers. I think for sub USB 2,000 you get a lot of camera and it is great value, and that goes equally for the S5ii (which is also not perfect).
clear image zoom is possible because of downsampled footage. its a 6k sensor shooting at 4k which means theres room to crop into the 6k footage without cutting into the 4k
In low light situation If you are trying to record the scene brighter than reality ISO 12800 is necessary, otherwise if you just want to capture as you see, ISO 2500 is fine. BTW have you guys tried exposing for 800 ISO but recording at 2500 ISO?
to some this up, you can only use this camera in natural light. You'll spend more on lights, which is good, but everytime you want to use the camera is crazy
My FX30 has been an absolute workhorse! Planning on getting an FX3 soon just for the cleaner 4k120 but if I didn't shoot so much sports the FX30 would be the perfect camera for me.
Have to disagree with you on the photo capabilities. For stills, it is absolutely crippled needlessly. No mode dial makes it a journey to take photos. It’s just deliberately made inconvenient for product differentiation from the 6700.
He did say quality not ergonomically. its given that it would be harder since its cine camera first. but yeah I wouldnt use it because its a single switch on my 70D to switch between video and photo.
FX30, A6700, and ZV-E1 with Tilta cage and fan are a good combo. It's nice to have a different look to tell different stories so the softer image of the ZV-E1 helps with softer lenses to get a "cinematic look". For some strange reason, Sony cameras can't shoot 30fps H.265? It's the most perplexing thing that makes me wish I had gone Panasonic.
I recently picked up a metabones speedbooster which helps significantly in low light situations. I can get clean footage at 3200 iso + speedbooster. Top it off with NR in Davinci which even lets me add an additional stop of light after the fact! The FX30 is an all around camera that makes you a better shooter bc you have to actually think.
Alot of my work is shot in very poor R&G lighting conditions and this camera just didn’t work for me. So got another FF camera instead. Everything else was pretty dope though.
I wouldn't sell a full frame camera for this if you already have a complete lens ecosystem around it. But if I was starting out, I'd pick this over FX3.
Thanks for the nice video, I fully agree and have really been loving my FX30 too. Especially when you use fast glass and don't shoot in ultra low light, it is a really excellent camera for sub USD 2,000.
The slow rolling shutter complaint is an odd one. It's actually not, really. It's on par with a bunch of cameras like the C70/C300, etc.. and better than pretty much all full frame stuff in the price range.
I was literally about to record a video on this same topic. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. Also you go cart documentary inspired me to buy the Helios 44-2
I’m about to hit bestbuy for one. I’ve been itching to pick one up, but I’m trying to be smart with my budget too haha. What about you recommend as a solid starter lens for this camera specifically, I’m trying to get more doc style and cinematic stuff. I have a Sony camcorder for vlog related stuff but need something for those crispy videos I’m trying to make. I’m shooting mostly Motorsports and mini motorsports(rc cars lol) if that helps. I appreciate the video. I’m still watching so if you answers this i apologize haha
I use a full frame because I don't want to deal with the cropped lens factor. For example, a 50mm lens has the field of view of a 75mm lens (1.5 factor on a Sony FX-30). The math is not difficult to figure out, and it's mostly not an issue until you get into wider angle lenses like a 16mm which has the FOV of a 24mm. There are times when you need a very wide view, and the crop factor is prohibitive IMO. I'm not a Sony user, but if I did move to Sony I would consider the full frame FX-3 over the FX-30. But since I'm not a Sony user, I have a Panasonic BS1H (box camera) and S5IIx - both of which are full frame. Also, both of my cameras have shutter angle, which if you're shooting video is a must. I'm not sure why Sony continues to leave out an important feature? Nonetheless, I appreciate what you had to say in this video!
But Zach! Saying this will get you blacklisted by the Full Frame Federation! Joke aside, as a hobbyist/amateur photographer, I was compelled to upgrade to full frame but after some time with my Canon 70D and my Olympus E-M5 (the first one), I thought the pictures looks great as long you dont unreasonably pixel peep cuz you'll wont see that when printed, and thus I didn't felt compelled to move to full frame. But if I go pro, i''m pretty much forced to however I have no intention of going pro for the foreseeable future.
I think someone has tested 6400 ISO FX30 in night scene is pretty clean, dare I say deliverable for work. With post and AI, I'm not really concern about noise nowadays. My problem with FX30 or other Sony cameras is the lack of open gate which limit the choice of anamorphic lenses and vertical crop. Nevertheless it's still my workhorse camera.
I have this camera and still watching reviews of it. haha. But this is a good review too. Thanks Zach. Bought it to do videos mainly with some photography. Suits me best.
I am thinking to get rid of fx30 beczause I shoot music video at night and I feel I should jump to Lumix S5ii . What’s your opinion bro on image quality differences
Honestly i would keep the fx30 and get the zve1 thats a sweet combo, i use my zve1 for night shots and my fx30 for my documentary shots or my long record shoot on a tripod. The zve1 is great for high quality shots and broll (fx3/6 sensor) and ive been lucky to not have any overheating issues
Nice. Got myself one for a gig a month ago and im loving it. I did cage it tho... top and side handles are too important to me haha. I basically have all the prime cropped sigma lenses and a Sony 11 1.8. hard to switch to anything else (without a lot of money) at this pont.

The only downside to me is the fact that IF you need the raw output, it is cropped, not the full S35 width.
