    Bryan you are a legend., I repaired a ten foot fiberglass rowboat ( ex hire) when I was 17. (1977)It was a badly done job. I had Absolutely no Help but it lasted for years. I am now repairing a fiberglass canoe. I Think With all the information available And with your determination and enthusiasm. As a mentor. I am optimistic I can do a better job then 43 years a go. Thanks Brian. keep making videos. And good luck

    You’ve got a very good start on the glass reconstruction and it nice to see your progress. As a good size Collision and restoration facilities owner for 40 yrs I’ve done my share of fiberglass repairs and your doing a great job and it looks like your avoiding one of the biggest mistakes in glass work by NOT Over Catalyzing your resin, of course if you did in that hot Florida sun you probably would have set your boat on fire from the heat created ! Keep up the great work 👍🏻

    Loving it. great tech talk.
    When you watch an expert explain something they often miss a lot of assumed knowledge, things that seem obvious to them. When you watch a self taught person you often get more details as well as insights into how they got to grasp the concepts. The latter is the case here.

    I rarely comment but I want you to know I am enjoying your project very much. I have built boats and rebuilt a totaled Class A motorhome as well as other large scale, multi-year projects. I like your honesty in how much work is involved and how much it is going to cost. Few people have any idea how much a major project takes in time, abilities, and money. I'm enjoying the simple explanations of various materials, why and where they are used, and the costs. Far too many people use cheap materials then try to sell it to an unsuspecting buyer. Keep up the great video work!

    A thought on the roof. I saw one cat that had a built in rain gutter. It uses it as a water catchment system. And adding a lip around the edge would help strengthen it. Love your videos. Thank you!!!

    • @BryanSailing
      @BryanSailing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool idea! The Antares has a gutter designed into the hardtop, interesting idea to put one on the cabin too.

    • @jacksbackable
      @jacksbackable 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like this idea, but I don’t like the idea of birdshit also being funneled in the (was) freshwater tank! A tarp is another option, but of course you have to be able to secure it, and with rain comes Wind💨 🙈🤨

    • @CheersWarren
      @CheersWarren 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The st Francis cats have a built in rain catcher, you can retro fit with something like fiddles used to stop things come off table tops. Some boats have the rain catcher built in to act as a handrail too.
      You can easily filter the water before it goes in your tank or keep it for not drinking water applications.
      It's way cheaper than a watermaker and uses no power as long as you have rain! Cheers Warren

    • @JF-4444
      @JF-4444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most rain catchment systems have a way to let you manually send water overboard the first 10 minutes of a storm until the roof gets cleaned off.

    I have to say, Bryan, I have great admiration for your derring do in even THINKING about taking this on and I'm very impressed with your ability to solve problems as they arise. The number of software engineers/programmers I know that would be willing to take on such things I can count on the fingers of ONE hand. Your videos have re-inspired me to get to work on the RV project I started two years ago but have allowed to sit idle for the last several months. It would be extremely helpful if you could get organized to the point that you could have video of you working the fiberglass/foam core laminations but I understand that you are at least is concerned with getting your project going as you are with making videos. Don't give up and thank you for sharing your experiences.

    Very well explained, I’ve only really used polyester and vinylester, with roven and CSM fibreglass. From an expert in fibreglass came the information that you should use CSM between roven wovens, backed up by testing by CSIRO. This is not allowing for the other types of fibreglass. I’m certainly NO Expert, and just sharing the little I’ve learned. I’ll look forward to your next episode! Thanks for sharing and stay safe. 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

    I know what you mean regarding the intense heat during the day and trying to work with glass and resins. On the other hand, I'm a little envious as winter is rapidly setting in here in Downeast Maine. It won't be long before we're freezing our butts off and shoveling snow - resins don't like such conditions and that type of work comes to a screeching halt for the next 6 to 8 months (if working outside)! As I'll shortly have to halt work on my new sailboat construction fairly soon, I'll live vicariously through watching your project progress each week here on TH-cam. BTW - you did a great job with your "tech-talk" and I think you made excellent progress since your last video. Keep at it!👍

    Well, that was a good lesson. Fiberglassing is really hard, but the more you do it the better you get....nerve racking because the resin hasn’t got a lot of time, you better go fast, that’s hard! Thank you, looking forward to your next episode. Thank you!

    • @BryanSailing
      @BryanSailing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. When it's hot like Florida, that resin kicks fast. One of the reason I don't have good video doing the lamination, but I'm getting it figured out.

    I found that a good description . Not much to question. I have 15+ years in hands on commercial fiberglass work and continue to be involved in the tooling side mainly. It did not really come up but you did not mention that CSM ( chopped strand mat) is measured in OZ per square ft. Woven/ knit by the squ yd. You did not seem to consider that as a good repair material , which it is. Especially with the weird shapes you have to work with that CSM can conform to so much better , but I've been doing it so long I can laminate just about anything! Cheers Warren

    Hi Bryan! I wrote something in your last episode. When you cut out broken foam parts, do it in an angle about 30 degree. Also the new part to glue in. There you have more area to glue together. In germany we called it "schäften". Take a look in the wiki then you know what i mean. A small but important tip from a german boatbuilder. Greets Paddy

    Hey Bryan, greetings from SV Serenity, Antares 4434. Would like to make a public comment about how amazing your videos are. Super instructive, even though I haven't had a need for major repairs on my boat (knock core, right!?). It helps prepare for all eventualities. You are so very much appreciated. THANK. YOU! Mark.

      Your welcome. I just joined the Antares group and it's amazing how welcoming they are despite the condition of my boat. Antares is a great boat and I'm looking forward to sailing mine someday.

    The "experts" usually don't want to give away their expertise as its $ involved. The self taught independent does not have that conflict of interests. Thank you for your honesty . Want to congratulate you as you picked the right cat brand to fix IMHO..

    • @BryanSailing
      @BryanSailing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The more I "tear into" the Antares the more I like the way it is built. I don't want to insult anybody's boat, but there is a big difference in between a boat built for charter and this boat. Nothing wrong with a boat designed for charter if that's what you are looking for.

      @@BryanSailing as far as i ve seen Antares is probably one of the strongest cats around..you picked up a right hull to invest ..best luck. T care.

      @@BryanSailing by way, check all bulkheads joints exterior and interior for stress cracks..if you don't find much , she should be fine. Mast step compression etc. Bests

    You're doing great, man! There are tons of utube videos with slow mo of process/etc, but not so much of knowledge applied to the particular case: e.g which fiberglass to use and why, and which resin and why. I'm really looking forward to your series! Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it!:)

    Very interesting. Feels good to see that it's possible to get seemingly difficult glass work done without being a professional. I'll never get used to these crazy units of measure though; ounces/square yard? Oh come on america :D
