  • I purchased the new Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 40 L pack recently and finally got to take it out for a spin on an overnight hike on the Appalachian Trail. This video discusses what I liked and didn't like about the pack, and whether I plan to use it again. Give it a watch to find out if I recommend the pack or not!
    If you are interested in purchasing your own Unbound 40, or any other gear from Hyperlite Mountain Gear, consider using the link below to get 15% off your first order with HMG. Full disclosure, I do get a small kickback but how can you pass up 15% off?

    Nice review. Does the discount link still work? I am trying to order one and it is not giving me the 15% off.

      I was having issues with it a few weeks ago. I’m not sure what’s going on with it. I’ll check later when I’m at a computer to see if I can make it work or get a new link.

    lite AF is 400 for a pack plus 100$ for hip pouches which aren't even real lol just clipped on. I bought an unbound today and just watching diff vids while its in the mail.was gonna get a ULA same pack pretty much but load lifters and no seam seal taping. same price too. but after learning they aren't seam taped I found one of the 20 percent off hyper lite links and well at that price it def beats out anything else that I would be interested in. the unbound hardline def is much more durable and will last hella longer than the normal lite af dcf too, unless its their xpac fabric but as cool as xpac is its super heavy. the price def had alot to do with my pick. was using a gossamer for 3 yrs and hate it. feel like it was designed to get water in lol. a lite af pack would've cost me 200$ more. I can't justify that for fancy colors so my options were the unbound or the ULA ultra circuit for what would work for me. with the discount the unbound was like 70$ less and is seam taped. they carry the same load amount and are the same weight. same features same mesh etc. if the unbound carries not that great then ill just add my own load lifters. so yea it looks great at its price point which is funny bc in the past hyper lite was the most expensive option. the tables have turned I suppose.

      Thinking about getting the Unbound 40, how do you like it so far? Also wondering where the heck did you get the 20% off from?

      @@themodularmodular wound up falling in love with it in patagonia last year. mb 300+ miles on it plus used it to backpack for a few months. only thing id change is shoulda got the black instead of white nad mb the 55L instead of the 40. didnt expect it to be so comfortable. they have sales every once in awhile or can use an affiliate code for i think 10 percent off. can send u my code if you want or wait for a holiday sale.

      @@timearchitecture good to hear! I’m pretty much set on this, and badly wanted the white one for the pop, but I know it’s gonna turn brown real fast so I’ll opt for the black.
      Yea 10% is pretty much the default discount on their website, basically waiving the tax charge lol.
      Thanks for the info!

    Have you had a pack with load lifters and did the fact that this pack doesnt have them affect the comfort.

      I’ve had load lifters on prior packs and honestly don’t notice that they’re not there on this pack so far.

    I love this pack so much. I actually had the 40L in white and switched when to the 55L black when it came out. The 55 does add a small amount of weight but the top rolls down basically to the same size of the 40L. the difference is almost not noticeable (at least to me)

    May I ask what size you used for what body height? You mentioned the straps were comfortable and I'd like to see if this pack could work for me. Thanks!

    Where did you get that white shoulder strap pouch from? I see HMG only sell them in black - I'd like a white one to match the new Unbound 55 I'm going do buy. Thanks!

    Nice review. Could you comment on the stiffness of the "Back". HMG says it has an "integrated 1/8" high-density foam and shaped plastic PE sheet..." to give structure to the pack and assist in load transfer to the hips. Does this prevent or minimize barreling of the pack? About what % of the weight do you think was transferred to your hips? Could you transfer close to 100% of the weight to your hips? How much weight did you carry and and how did it feel?

    • @AliciaintheMountains
      @AliciaintheMountains  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not 100% sure what you mean by “barreling” of the pack. I haven’t heard that phrase before. Happy to answer that if you can clarify what you mean.
      I tend to carry a larger percent of weight on my hips than my shoulders (on purpose) so I’d say I had about 60-70% on my hips. I could definitely tighten the hip belt more if I wanted to attempt to transfer 100% - but I didn’t try. I carried about 24 lbs with food & water and it felt very comfortable. The pack didn’t felt overloaded at all.

      Thank you for taking the time to address my questions. Very nice of you to do so.
      Barreling is kind of what it sounds like. The pack starts to take on the shape of a barrel. This can become uncomfortable against your back as the rounded surface focuses the pressure into a smaller area. A full frame pack (one with vertical and horizontal bars/stays that are connected to each other forming a frame) prevents the pack from rounding or "barreling" against your back. Most of the time this is more comfortable as it spreads the pressure more evenly over a broader surface.

      @AliciaintheMountains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shanksmare ahh gotcha. I didn’t notice anything like that. It felt comfortable against my back. I know there is 1 single vertical stay in the center and it seemed to keep the structure of the pack. I also pack my pack in a way that tends to keep the shape as well I think. I do believe the way HMG designed the back of the pack was excellent and provides a comfortable wear.
