    I love it how one plane helps you build another, a second helps you build a third, etc. I began working with beech recently. It is such a nice wood for hand tools. I now understand better why it is so often used for hand planes. I enjoy your channel! Thanks for your posts!

    Amazing work! I'm slowly building up my skill set in the hope of one day making a few planes. Quick questions if you have time, why applewood boxing? I thought fruit woods were soft and so would make a poor choice? You obviously know more here than I do so was I wrong about fruit woods? Also, why bother with boxing on a rebate plane at all as I thought it was used in molding planes to reinforce parts which stood proud of the surface? (Newbie questions, I'm sure. Sorry about that!) Thanks for you video, I learned a lot!

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    13:29 The apple wood boxing set at the bedding angle is visually absolutely stunning. Does the forward angle of the boxing end grain cause any chip out of the boxing during usage of the plane? Is this a compromise made for looks verses operation?
    Can you provide any information on the slotting plane shown at 3:04? Where did you get that?
    Love your videos, glad you returned to making tools, hope you make many more.

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tim! The boxing is more durable for friction than the sole of the plane. That allows to keep the profile of the sole for very long time.

    Congratulations, very nice came out. You need a wooden vise, maybe we can make a collaboration this summer as I currently work on a 43 mm tap and die set for wooden screw. ☺

    A few questions: why hide glue and not normal glue? Why is the box stronger when parallel to the bed? Could you make some day a tour of all the planes you've got and explain very briefly what they are used for? Thank you very much for your videos!

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jonas, hide glue is traditional glue and allows to remove the whole boxing (after heating) to repair. Every end grain (or even mitre side) is more durable for friction and will keep the edge of the sole for long time, so the plane will work propertly. One day i'll make that kind of video. Regards!

    Okay, so the only powertool here is only a bench grinder which is usually not so pricey for a first timer. Awesome video.

    Hello Stavros, I really appreciate your work. It has become an inspiration to continue my little workshop. I do not have a lot of tools, but I want to make my own. Would you help us to know how to make a simple or regular continental or horn style hand plane from zero?

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jacob! Ithank you :) i'm not a fan of that kind of planes, but my buddy Łukasz showed how to make that horn. Here is the link

      @@StavrosGakos Thank you so much, I enjoyed the video a lot. Instead of the continental or horn style plane, Would you consider making an Infill-Norris-style hand plane, for those of us that cannot afford one? I have been a woodturner for many years, but now I want to start doing more square things, so I want to make my own tools for hand woodworking. Thank you for the inspiration you give to all of us!
      Happy New Year.

    Or perhaps 19:43 ?
