I'm actually fascinated by these kinds of "hippy" psychotic-break cases simply because of a personal experience of my own. I've seen many examples of psychedelic drugs being used to manipulate others psychologically, i.e. the Manson family etc, or also seeming to lead to disordered and paranoid mental states (as in this and other cases), or having the potential to induce schizophrenia/psychosis in vulnerable individuals. However, strangely enough, it was one psychedelic experience that led me to leave intoxicants behind altogether, and embark on a more successful, meaningful, and fulfilling existence. One side of my family line had suffered generationally from alcoholism and neuroticism, and I inherited those genes/behaviors. When I was 22, I was at the lowest point of my life. I had been drinking almost a 5th of whiskey every day, since I was 17, and I started drinking at age 14, and I couldn't keep a job for more than a few months, not even as a janitor. Now, I'm not a "hippy" but one night at a mountainside party I took two Psilocybin mushrooms someone offered me. I would not normally just take a drug someone offered me, the only other intoxicant besides caffeine and alcohol that I had used were a few occasions when I tried cannabis. So taking these willy nilly was reckless in retrospect, even if it was one of my friends who offered them to me, but, I was very very drunk at that point, and feeling kind of "devil may care" due to my psychological state. However, I ended up having an intense, introspective, very unsettling experience, where I could literally physically FEEL throughout my body the damage that I was doing to my internal organs, how damaged they already were. I realized how ill I was mentally, and physically. I couldn't hide from the fact that I was addicted to alcohol. The truth stared me in the face, and I could see how far my trajectory had taken me to a place of emptiness, chaos, and sickness. I could see all the failures in my life that were precipitated by my addiction. It was terrifying to realize what the future would hold if I didn't change. No more mental compartmentalizing was possible. The next day, I did not drink. And the next day. And the next. It's been 34 years since I've used any intoxicant and it changed the course of my life. Now, I can't say that this is a route people should take, at all. I'm the least New Age person imaginable. I am an believer in old school, rationalist, Enlightenment thinking, but this was a profound, life changing experience for me. I don't want to engage in magical thinking about this, because I distrust that kind of illogic. But something happened to me that night, that changed the course of my existence here. I went on to work long hours as a cook to go to university part time, and eventually earned a masters degree, worked for about 10 years in that particular industry, and then eventually left that field to play music full time, and to teach music as well. I wonder whether these people in this video or others covered, would have behaved this way or presented mental illness symptoms and committed these egregious acts regardless of their using these substances, or whether these drugs actually pushed them over the edge? It's very possible that they may have. But one thing that does seem consistent is that even drugs that are known to primarily lead to positive outcomes, i.e. ones that are prescribed by a psychiatrist, that have been researched, can sometimes have unintended psychological effects, and of course, we are still learning new things as time goes on. I'm curious what Dr. Grande's take would be on such examples such as my own. Anyway. Love the channel, and thanks to you Dr. Grande for your amazing dry burns, and thoughtful analyses!

A very interesting look into the fine line between mental illness and counterculture projections involving a death cult, satanism, and other obsessive thoughts leading to murder. You present your case in a nice, droll style, which lets an audience know that there is always humor lurking, providing well earned entertainment value.
Thank you, Dr. Grande. I especially like the point you made about the others around them not recognizing signs of mental illness. From what I've seen, the "counterculture" and "New Age" (and also some in the LGBT community), are often so invested in non-judgment that they fail to call a spade a spade, (and even forbid others from doing so). They have even gotten to the point of changing our language, where definitions of words have drifted. Here's a minor example: I worked in a New Age bookstore. The owner was concerned about "shrinkage." In other words, some items had gone missing; were stolen; were shoplifted. We had an incident where a woman had been trying on jewelry. She tried on several rings, but didn't buy any. After she left, I was putting them away, and noticed that one was missing. We looked all over for it, but it was gone. I remarked to a coworker that I thought the woman had stolen it. She looked some more and then confirmed, "She took it." Rarely in the New Age community do you hear that anything was "stolen." It has always been "taken." A more serious example shows up in the LGBT community. Pedophiles and NAMBLA have attempted to align themselves with the non-judgmental LGBT community for many decades, but the LGBT community has always balked. Now the pedophiles have relabeled themselves as MAPs, claimed that they would never harm a child, (I notice they don't say that they would never TOUCH a child), and some of the people in the community seem to be falling for it. People who are into non-judgment really do need to learn the value of discernment. As one of my teachers told us repeatedly, "Just because you're spiritual doesn't mean that you have to be stupid!" JP Sears does a fantastic job of pointing this out - with humor!

I enjoyed your observations about the hippie counterculture and how there was so much rampant drug use that it was hard to tell who was normal and who was just high.
I follow your videos and feel astounded about the shoddy police work in so many cases. If you leave the murder weapon in the police car how hard is it to make a connection to the crime? The police actually had Suzan’s notes at the first brutal murder. Wow.
I understand what it is like to try and talk to drugged nutters. I get their frustration and lack of will to try to find out what happened, because it just drags out and drains you of everything just to talk to one of these "hippies" about anything important. How do I know this? I have one in my family.

@@beeimaginative I agree. How do you miss a gun in the car? And NOT connect it to a homicide. Sounds like incompetence, or, perhaps a very busy, overworked, and understaffed police department? In your analysis, I was glad you brought up the drug factor but disappointed that you didn't have more to analyze about their LSD use contributing their mental problems --- you only mentioned the connection in the background segment.

I always feel like that hippies are "easy to spot" so we have quick biases pop up in our heads even before we speak to them. In contrast, the "normal" people who happen to be very out there are not easy to spot at all. It's an anecdote, but I feel like the amount of times I've gone "okay, wackadoo" regarding conversations with strangers is consistent across the board. At first glance (or reflection in my case), the hippies/counterculture might pop out more in memory, but I don't really have a negative reaction to them. I feel like I've had more frustrating and "okay, wackadoo" conversations with very "normal" people way more often honestly, especially in recent years.
Suzan had an extremely creepy smile that instantly made people uncomfortable...yet Suzan had some 150 sexual partners in the 8 years since she got divorced. Guys, our standards are, as ever, exceedingly low.
I legit almost CHOKED on my Now n Later chewies! The triple 6's thing with Reagan's and Carson's name. Omg lol.. He said " No! because William has 7 letters." LMAO!
I've really enjoyed these cases from the sixties and seventies. Astute observation about mental illness not being detected inside an already deviant community.
Take a small bit of exception to the word "deviant." Often a group will rebel against those who came before. This is a pretty normal occurrence. As a former hippie 👵 , We wanted an end to war and more personal freedom - not so deviant.
I was thinking of the drug use, permiscous sex, and rebellious attitude toward authority. None of those traits constituted mentally, physically or emotionally healthy lifestyles.
Well there were many different lifestyles and many of them were perfectly responsible and sane. Not all authority is worthy of being followed blindly ( think Hitler). And drug use has been around a long time so hippies were not alone. What you say seems right only if each piece is not examined.
I would love to know your opinion and thoughts on Colleen Stans case How she was able to survive for so many years baffles my brain. Also thank you for another interesting, informative video.

We looked all over for it, but it was gone. I remarked to a coworker that I thought the woman had stolen it. She looked some more and then confirmed, "She took it." Rarely in the New Age community do you hear that anything was "stolen." It has always been "taken."
A more serious example shows up in the LGBT community.
"Maybe she decided their was nothing in her head ". Dr Grande, you are the best.

Dear Dr G, an extraordinarily complex analysis. The clarity combined with humor that you consistently provide is soma to any. Bravo.
There are still several young women missing on the Southern Oregon Coast. Who disappeared during the time frame when the Baer’s were living there. I’ve wondered if the Carson’s possibly had anything to do with any of their disappearances.
The beast who failed math! Dr Grande, you slay me.
Just catching up on all your videos I missed, while I was under the weather, Dr. Grande. They were worth the wait. Having my own little Grandethon, right here in the Garden State! 😁 This video was especially interesting. Loved all the funnies, throughout, too! You still got it! 🤣
Thanks for all your great work, Todd! 🤗 😊
Suzan was a psychic and spiritually gifted until another woman came up in the picture. Then she suddenly reverted to an ordinary jealous woman.
Always informative and interesting good man! … thanks again!
The number of the beast who failed math! That actually made me LOL!
Doc! Your content is so perfectly done for what it is. You present the story. And you give details that are relevant to the case. And your occasional dry comment is always appreciated too. Thanks for the consistently great content!
Michael to Suzan: "I wanna make Karen my second wife"
Dr. Grande: "Now let's move on to the scene of the crime"
Dr Grande, could you not diagnose anyone but merely speculate about what could be happening in a situation where people feel the compulsion to comment "first" on your videos?!
I can. They are very low in self-esteem.
😆
Hey! If you have never had the rush of being the first commenter on a video I feel sorry for you. It is a thing!🌋
🤣 I'm curious about that to.
cute
Excellent analysis as always.
Thank you Dr G.
Their mutual reinforcement reminds me of Perry Smith and Richard Hickok, the "In Cold Blood" killers. They would make a great subject for a video.
Yes that would be really really interesting!
"..She felt this way about a lot of people.." 😊 (Droll!)
The "Number of The Beast who Failed Math Class" got me wanting to draw! It sounds like a children's book title, the Beast Who Failed Math, doesn't it? Somehow that phrase stuck with me.
"Common sense astral projection" Thank You Dr. Grande! Excellent as always. ♥
It astounds me how creatures

I’m so stoked I grew up without all the Internet❣️ so many very very excellent memories of my life in the valley and surrounding areas!🏄♀️
@@troy3456789 First person experience is better than making judgments from afar. I appreciate your comment. I appreciate what a hard job police officers have but when Dr. G reports on case after case of really bad investigations it is frustrating. Hope your family member is ok.
@@beeimaginative The one I am talking about has been arrested and charged with arson twice; both times for setting her own apartment on fire from the inside. It is impossible to have a normal conversation with this person. I cannot imagine what it was like for investigators to try to interview this person, and the witch hunter lady.
@@beeimaginative I agree. How do you miss a gun in the car? And NOT connect it to a homicide. Sounds like incompetence, or, perhaps a very busy, overworked, and understaffed police department? I could see that happening in NYC, especially back when this happened. Those days investigations were a lot more difficult. Just can't get over the gun, though. Smh.
I think this has to be your funniest analysis to date!
In your analysis, I was glad you brought up the drug factor but disappointed that you didn't have more to analyze about their LSD use contributing their mental problems --- you only mentioned the connection in the background segment.
Always interesting.
Your humor is outstanding.
Seems to Me, that most of the people you talk about have the same problem.
Sex, misuse of drugs, and having a G-d complex.
So, again this is why I isolate myself a lot.
Love you, Man.
Thank you.

How about a speculative analysis on the 1984 kidnapping of Jody Plauche by Jeffery Doucett? What made the case famous is the reaction of Jody’s father, Gary Plauche. Very interesting and chock full of potential mental health factors. Either way please keep us the amazing work you are doing. We all enjoy your videos regardless of the topics you choose.

'but her common sense frequently did' that made my day lol
Was gonna say magical thinking is not just a hippie thing. It is everywhere.
@@alisonmercer5946I agree, these Muppets aren't hippies .

As a former hippie 👵 , We wanted an end to war and more personal freedom - not so deviant.
usually the negative use of the word deviant is used over other groups to not question or even justify our own deviancy.
Literally nothing good came from that "culture".
