  • There is no need to be intimated when flying at a large international airport - knowing what to expect is half the battle, and this video shows a departure from Kansas City International, from starting the engine on the FBO ramp to requesting a departure clearance, to taking off, and even some sightseeing over the city of Kansas City. Follow along in this video, recorded on a beautiful day in January 2019 on a flight from KMCI to KCID (Cedar Rapids, IA).

    Always interesting watching your videos and hearing someone I know on frequency! The Tower (Local) controller you talked to that day is an old Air Force buddy of mine, he was a GS civilian controller at Whiteman AFB before and went FAA. Nice flight out of my hometown!

    Great videography and tour of the KC area. That area just NW of Downtown Airport is on the KS side and use to be the site of Fairfax Airport. It closed 20 or more years ago and a GM plant was built on the site. During WWII North American made B25's at Fairfax
    Airport. I think Pratt and Whitney also had a plant there then.

    Dang, that was cutting it a bit close for a VFR flight. You could even clearly see the PAPI on final approach. I have honestly never seen them on any other VFR landing on TH-cam. That shows how dark it was outside already. Still, controller said nothing, sounds like she has the hots for you. XD

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry, I don't understand your comment... VFR doesn't end at sunset. At least here in the US, night VFR is perfectly normal.
      Good to know, though, that the controller might cut me some slack should that ever be needed. :-)
      Best regards, Martin

    • @realitycheck3363
      @realitycheck3363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martinpauly Oh really? We need a night rating if you want to fly after dark. The clue is in the name, Visual Flight Rules. You can't see the ground in the dark. Well, there is so much ambient light where you fly, I suppose you can still see everything, even after sunset, which technically still makes night flying VFR. XD
      Anyway, just loved the way she said "You too" at the end there. She sounds really cute.

    hi Marty - Quick Q- you are PIC for a flight. Can passengers in the A/c consume alcohol during a flight ? whats your thought ? thx

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. An applicable rule is 14 CFR § 91.17 (b). This does not prohibit passengers from drinking alcohol, but it does set the expectation that passengers must not get intoxicated. Another data point is that most airlines offer alcoholic beverages to their passengers.
      I guess if things get our of hand, one could also point at 14 CFR § 91.13.
      So while the rules for the pilot/crew are very black-and-white, my understanding of the rules for passengers is that it's not a matter of "can they" or "can't they", but more along the lines of "what is a reasonable limit".
      If you know know of other regulations or FAA guidance on the topic, I'd be interested in learning more about it.
      Best, Martin

    Nice video Martin, where do you typically do your run ups when at these Bravos?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Paul. At MCI I did the run-up on the FBO ramp, before calling Ground for taxi (I cut the run-up out in this video). I've also done a run-up later in some cases, but only when I was certain that there would be time for it. A few times I've done rolling run-ups, when there were long straight taxiways and little traffic. So I guess the answer to your question is: it depends.

      Yes... in general, I am not a fan of the automated ATIS and the overloaded, very long recordings at most large airports. Yes, I know there are birds in the vicinity... Keep it short and sweet, and, oh, yes, get the cloud coverage right, please. :-)

    Interesting that they clear you into the bravo when you are on the ground. Is there another choice? :)

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree - it's a formality, and I wouldn't have been be too concerned if he had NOT cleared me into the Bravo (since I was already in it). Unlike on landing, where it's critical to hear the magic words "cleared into the Bravo airspace" before proceeding.
      Best regards, Martin

      @@martinpauly I suppose you aren't technically in the bravo on the ground since you aren't in the "airspace", so the controller was technically correct clearing you into it. I've never departed a Bravo VFR, so this was a new learning for me. Thanks for sharing it. Looks like you have some nice wx for this time of the year out there.

    Didn't you do a 360 video of downtown Kansas City some time ago? Was this the same flight?

    • @martinpauly

      Yes, that was the same flight and my first experiment with 360 video.
      I even used some of the 360 footage in this "normal" edition.

      I seen a forest fire at night from an airplane before at 35,000-37,000 feet, it looked like a ring of yellow on the ground, the middle you couldn't even see because of the smoke.
