I wonder how this could work in practice as some games have differences in UI/text scaling between portable and docked, or portable exclusive features that use the touch screen. Mandating docked mode for Switch 1 BC would be out of the question, maybe allow a launch option or for the devs to toggle it?

@@MisterTambourineMan The base Switch can already change modes on the fly when docked. The easy solution is to include a toggle in a system sub-menu for Switch 1 games. The default could be docked mode with the option to change to portable mode if desired.

I actually think Nintendo would go for 8 inch 1080p screen
    1) Backward compatibility will be simpler, switch 2 in portable mode will use the docked mode of switch 1 games. Which is up to 1080p. No need to deal with scaling issues
    2) They could market this feature, switch 1 games will look better portable or docked mode.
    3) Nintendo has a habit of not putting anti-aliasing on their games, since 1080p will have smaller pixels, it will look better. they don't have to do anything.

Yep, 720p looks just fine in handheld mode. People who claim they can see the pixels should stop having their nose touch the screen and hold the console at a normal viewing distance.
Hell, most phone games do not even run at native res. Waste of battery life and you do not even notice the reduced resolution due to how small the screen is.
TH-cam also tend to favour 480p if possible on phone because most of the time, you do not notice on such a small screen.
If they were to increase the res, it would be to something like 900p. There is very little sense in going for 1080p on such a small display.

      @Ozzianman 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@balloonb0y677
It depends. Going off the assumption it is a Switch game running at 720p:
If the higher screen resolution is exactly double which in this case would be 2560x1440 (Which Nintendo will never go for due to cost and battery life), then yes, 720p would look fine. That is called integer scaling. It just doubles the pixels so it remains crisp. That is why PSP games look amazing on the PS Vita as its display is exactly double the resolution of the PSP.
If the resolution is not exactly the double, then some kind of image interpolation is used when upscaling. In most cases this causes the images to blur, which looks bad and makes the game look worse unless you got an upscaler like DLSS or XeSS which uses AI (something I am hoping Switch 2 will support). If you have ever played a DS game on a 3DS without disabling the upscaling, then you should know what I am talking about.
So no, higher resolution screen does not necessarily mean it will look better. What can make games look a lot better without increasing the resolution is by using panels with better color accuracy like OLEDs or MiniLEDs which in my opinion is a way more worthwhile upgrade for a handheld.
Higher numbers is not always better.

If expected to go 7-8 years at minimum, that is into the next decade where competition is going to be much different and other platforms may push further into next gen expectations. If both GTA6 and ‘Switch2’ launch in 2025, it will be quite the benchmark.

Yes. Considering it’ll be under clocked in handheld mode with lower GPU and ram speeds to save on battery, like what the Switch does now and it’ll have a smaller battery than say the Steam Deck, I don’t see it having a 40 or 50 Wh battery and be just as large to house one. I can see it being too much and too expensive for what Nintendo is going for. If it’s running at like 6watts or lower in handheld, I don’t see a need for a 1920x1080p screen. 1280x800p 8 inch screen is fine. I don’t care about upscaling in handheld either, it would be a waste and should be saved for a very large panel in docked mode when the rest of the hardware is at the maximum TDP and higher GPU and ram speeds. I would prefer to still have an OLED with HDR at half the resolution of 1080p with 1280x800p and be cost effective over saving more and having and LCD at 1080p. OLED is still pricy and you can’t have both a 1920x1080p OLED with HDR, it would cost more over an LCD 1080p, sacrifices have to be made somewhere for cost and I hope Nintendo does keep an OLED still and be just a but larger with a slight bump to vertical pixel count, 720 to 800. So yeah, I don’t see a need for the next hardware having 1080p and running at 5 or 6 watts thinking rasterized games would look good using 1080p natively or wasting upscaling and running them internally at a lower resolution. I would rather see all the nice stuff on a larger tv when it will actually count. My eyes will not notice much on such a tiny panel.

With technology similar to the RTX 4050 mobility, the supposed Switch 2 could theoretically support two 2160p60 monitors. In the mobile world, most screens are currently 20:9 or close to that aspect ratio. Cheaper IPS screens are around 2400x1080, while premium screens are 3088x1440, with the iPhone sitting in between. Most mobile games operate at resolutions up to 1600x900. These resolutions are upscaled, and the popular anti-aliasing solution is TAA. This is also true for most current Switch games in Dock mode; for example, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, and Metro Redux are rendered at 900p with temporal upscaling methods.
For the Switch 2, they will probably use a similar approach but with the help of DLSS. This means the internal resolution could vary between 720p and 900p, and DLSS can help achieve 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p. Developers might also use FSR, depending on their choice. Therefore, the difference between docked and handheld modes will likely be the target quality of this upscaling. On a higher PPI portable screen, less detail concentration is expected. Along with upscaling solutions, Variable Rate Shading will be introduced, allowing for dynamically lowering shader precision in portable mode. This will reduce resource usage without significantly compromising image quality.
The Switch 2 could have either 1080p or 1440p screens, but my guess is that it will have a 1440p screen, as 1440p is a multiple of 720p. In Japan, 1440p portable screens are quite popular. Japan adopted 1080p much earlier than most places and is a major producer of screens. So if Nintendo has a chip capable of supporting a 1440p screen without compromises, they will use it. Thus, the Nintendo Switch 2 will likely have a 1440p portable screen and support 2160p on a TV, both upscaled from a lower resolution. However, the HUD would be fixed at the native or intermediate resolution.

DLSS, a better/bigger battery, and having low rumored clocks will allow them to output 1080p with decent battery life. The technology will be customized to what they want to do. If they're doing 1080p, it'll be fine. Most games will probably still run at 720p Natively and upscale from there.

    My freaking smartphone is 2160P.
Twenty years ago worlds smallest 1080p flatscreen was 8 inches.
    Here's a though:
IF the screen size is bigger, then there does not need to be upscaling from 720P into 1080P on original Switch -games, as those games can be displayed with black boarders around the screen.
But in order this to work, Switch 2 would need to utilize exact same pixel density as original Switch.
So, when old Switch -game would be played on Switch 2, the actual picture would be just as large as on original Switch, and of course full screen on Switch 2 -gaming.
Only thing they would have to work around is method to avoid screen burning, if boarders would be on during long gaming sessions.

I don't know. I mean, 1080p WOULD undoubtedly look better. It's like a lot of the displays that were fine at 1080p when 1440p or 4K came around. Technically you can get a plenty good enough image at 1080p on those old 32 - 40 inch displays at around 4 - 5 feet away. But you do still notice a clarity boost at 1440p or 4K there. It's kind of the similar thing here on these handhelds. We're looking at smaller screens, yes, but also at a much shorter distance from our face. And I can definitely still notice jaggies, some artifacting, and pixelation from 720p on these handhelds. Especially because the way they are achieving this is by forgoing a lot of the post-processing (to save on performance). And while that's fine, at lower resolutions like these it's not that much more expensive to just generate a good image from the start. Sure, I'd say the same as John if the discussion was 1080p to 1440p or 4K simply because the higher you go on resolution (beyond a certain point) the cheaper that most AA and other post-processing solutions will be relative to going to the higher resolution (and probably still needing some of them).
But at lower resolutions like this going up to 1080p I don't think the power cost is going to be significantly different than all of the extra post processing needed to make 720p look good on these smaller displays. Like, I've hacked the switch to output to 1080p on handheld mode with the clock speed boosts as well. And it absolutely does improve clarity and fix a lot of the jaggy, clarity and pixelation issues some games have, even with absolutely no additional post processing being done. Sure, there is a slight performance cost increase. But it's nowhere near as expensive still as the resolutions most consoles are trying to hit. And hell, I even agree with some of the people in these comments, if 1080p seems too high, just aim for 900p. On a handheld it'd be barely (if even) noticeable of a difference from 1080p and still give roughly a 15% or so performance increase over 1080p while still looking much more crisp than 720p. It might scale even worse with last gen (Switch 1) titles, but I suppose patches could be introduced in egregious cases to support a higher rendering resolution. Not an optimal solution, but I think would really improve the games on Switch 2. If they launched with a proper OLED screen on Switch 2 (which they probably won't, but if they did) then they could do like Steam Deck OLED and just have an ever so slightly larger screen for 900p that would just cut off a few rows and columns of pixels when rendering at 720p to provide a closer to native feel like the Switch 1 for games that struggle to achieve 900p. Or upscale, but alas there are options.

No, 1080p isn't too much for a mobile chipset. The most important aspect of whether they go with 720p or 1080p depends on what the docked resolution will be. 1080p and 720p with 4X scale is 4k and 1440p respectively. A great visual for this is split-screen multiplayer, where each player's screen res would ideally be 1080p or 720p respectively on a native 4k screen.
If the target is 4k with mostly upscaled games, with some indie and 1st party games running native 4k (yes it's doable. Devs/publishers that care enough will optimize their games), then the screen should be 1080p because it evenly scales into 4k.
if the target is 1440p, 720p would be better because 720p evenly scales into 1440p.
