- It's the Hyrax, and its origins are mind-blowing.
Watch new episodes of the Wild Warrior series every Wednesday.
The Rock Hyrax or Dassie is native to much of southern Africa and can be found in large colonies where they scurry around rock faces. They are herbivorous and are about the size of a large rabbit, but they aren't in the rodent family. Can you guess who their closest living relatives are?

Rabbits aren't rodents either . . .
He was referring to what his cameraman had said previously “this is a Rock Rabbit”. Which is a name for baby/young Dassies.

Congratulations
Congrats bitc-

They are the relatives of elephants
do they belong to the squirrel family
bro, did you even watch the video? ffs
Yip again don't know that about the dassie...
Are they related to lynx? Maybe?
elephant
Adorable-no question there but related to elephants? Just not seein' it-LOL
They have a pretty long list of features they have in common with elephants, details of anatomy and behavior that set them absolutely apart from rodents or other animals.

Doesn't this video just encourage more people to keep them as pets?
We hope not! Perhaps we'll go back in a few months and show what a nightmare they are when they hit maturity. Pokemon may not be released, but he'll start becoming aggressive and smelly. Not a good pet. Thanks for pointing this out.
@@WildWarrior Zach the camera man is equally cute! 😘
@@WildWarrior I'm a biologist interested in studying the hyrax, primarily to establish reproductive technology to help the elephants. Could you please describe the potential problems with keeping hyraxes indoors? Would be great if you post the promised video :P
