    I am the Director/Librarian of a gem of a Library in the Adirondacks. I will be putting Ari's book on my purchase list tomorrow when I go to work. Thank you Marc and thank you Ari, for the outstanding work you are doing, have done & continue to do. I learned so much in your show today. I already posted the podcast on my fb page. I feel there is one issue on the ballot in November, you are either voting for Democracy (Biden) OR you are voting for autocracy/fascism (tRump). IMO We can do this! VOTE BLUE down ballot!!! When we win, the other issues will be addressed!!

      Ever since I read Carol Anderson's book, "One Person, No Vote" which has almost every single sentenced documented as to where something occurred, began my obsession with the voter suppression in America. It documents how involved tfg has been with voter suppression in America for decades!

      @aanyap2770 Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X get news online a lot more than from TV (or newspapers), in general. There's some crossover, of course - sometimes I watch clips online from MSNBC or CNN, and some independent podcasters are guests on those networks. Definitely the more exposure Marc gets, anywhere, the better! I can't fully get on board with Tik Tok, but I hope Marc has a good presence there so that younger people will hear him.

    got so much from it. Both these guys are fantastic in their work for us and the US

      If we were a democracy, even a representative democracy, we wouldn't have to be having this discussion, because the gerrymandering and voter suppression and that snake, McConnell, wouldn't have been able to keep a SCOTUS seat away from Obama... You get the picture. We would have fail-safes built into the system. Like we should have a fail-safe that someone who had stolen our NATIONAL SECURITY SECRETS and SHARED them with foreign nationals wouldn't be able to run for president or ever lay eyes on another top secret document. And we would have a SCOTUS that could read long enough to get to the 14th amendment, article 3, and comprehend what it says.
      Yet, here we are.

    Back in the 1960s, I was having a conversation with my Dad , Mom , and Brother , about voting . At one point , my dad told us he remembered when our churches priesthood members were sent through their wards , to tell each person of voting age , what political party to vote for . You vote for this party . And you vote for that party . My grandparents simply said , " ok " and then voted as they wanted to vote . And never said whom they actually voted for . You could do that then . Extremely difficult now .

    Congrats on new book and a great career! (already!!) Tea Party 2000ish was my turning point when placement of signage, and location changed to vote. "I don't think 'they' want us to vote".
    Voter suppression tactics and tribalism have become bold and blatant since January 6. Ease if voting a nonpartisan cause dear to my heart. Ruby and her daughter are everyday Heros. Please work (not observe) a voting location, if you can. Yes, you get payed for day training too usually. Fun to meet new neighbors while doing your civic duty🥰🗳️💟🇺🇸

    You know what's funny? Ads from Trump, begging for donations, keep popping up while I'm watching Democracy Docket! What are they thinking?
    Thank guys. This information is important and it's useful when having discussions with the few rational conservatives I still know. There seems to be a good 5% to maybe as much as 20% of conservative I know who still use reason and facts. Some of them really do care about keeping our representational voting system running.

      I'm still pissed about the voter suppression they passed right after 2020. There was no need in even writing that bill. We didn't have any voter fraud.
      And in the race for governor when Kemp won the first time, he was SOS and purged the voter rolls before the election and it was mostly minorities that were removed. It seems the republiCONS are always up to some shady shit.

    Remember, the electoral college possibly for the fourth time, will be telling the American people voting doesn't matter. Let's eliminate the electoral college, and as an aside...how do we do that?

    We talk about winning the popular vote and how it is not reflected in the Electoral College. The Constitution was written to allow a larger and larger House of Representatives. But we have frozen the number of Representatives at 435 since 1910. Why? Because the party in charge during the census of 1920, said whoa, we can't allow the increase to states with all those urban voters. This was repeated in 1930. Why not increase the House to like 1000 Representatives? (Comparison UK has 630 in House of Commons. Germany has 734 members in the Bundestag).

    Listening to this makes me think about all these students who are protesting about Gaza and not really understanding the situation there, and being ticked off at Biden for his support of Israel without understanding the history there, it seems that the students should be more worried about voting rights and do some protests against the GOP for that because the students that are protesting, are probably going to lose a lot of their rights if Donald Trump gets reelected and if the GOP continues this voter suppression agenda.

They blame President Biden for what Netanyahu is refusing to do is to stop the war and get hostages out cause Netanyahu wants to keep the war going until he defeats Hamas but he sends the innocent people down to south Rahal where they are planning to bomb next and kill all these innocent people and not bomb Gaza that's to the north. These people protesting should blame Netanyahu for not listening to the warning President Biden told him that he will with hold bombs if Netanyahu invades Rahal and Netanyahu did bomb there and these innocent people again have to move.       That is one thing we need to do . When our constitution was written, travel and communication, were extremely time consuming . Now , we have fast ways to travel , and communicate . So we have no need for the electoral college .

      Learn about the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and contact your legislators if your state is not on board yet. Marc has made great videos about it - I know some are on Brian Tyler Cohen's channel.

    America’s failure to treat personhood inclusively periodically precipitates economic, social, and political crises. Eventually, one of these crises will overlap with an existential challenge, like climate change, crippling our ability to rise to the challenge and that will be the end of American civilization. This is humanity’s tragedy, our failure of compassion is our doom.

      I disagree with your premise. Societies have been governed by men of power, and in the West, white men of power for centuries. The empowered make God into their image and likeness which leads to patriarchy. This strong father figure concept has become entrenched in the collective consciousness to such an extent that for all the talk about democracy, most institutions are run top-down. And generally, it's wealth white males at the heads of these entities.
      Therefore, to take what the powerful do and attribute the fall-out to "our failure of compassion" is a frame that is inaccurate.
      It reminds me of the strained way that researchers into serial killers often leave out gender even though 90% of these crimes are executed by males.
      Until rights and privileges are more equitably distributed (and better wages to offset the ridiculous redistribution of wealth that's occurred over the past few decades), the notion of a universal WE or "our" flaws is a false frame.
      I recently listened to a George Carlan podcast as he decimated the notion of Democracy.
      Here, Ari and Marc point out that we do NOT have a one vote one person true Democracy. And women only were allowed to vote a bit over a century ago, with Black citizens not much earlier.
      Many people have compassion and act from it. But they lack power. THAT is the issue.
      And if you want to make compassion your focus, why not mention that Jesus, the Prince of Compassion is the opposite of what most MAGA republicans emulate. They are the party of cruelty towards those they construe as outside their tribe (or tent).

    I can tell you when it (GOP antipathy to democracy) began, or at least when it was already well underway. In 1988 I participated as an intern for Republican Pete Wilson in a fundraiser for Project 90. Project 90 was an effort to take over state legislatures prior to 1990 so that congressional districts could be gerrymandered after the census.

      As mentioned above, GOP focus on controlling statehouses goes back at least to the 1980’s. As it was explained to me at the time, this was a generational effort to elect school board members, dog catchers, police chiefs, city council members, county supervisors, etc. to build the bench to take over statehouses so that they could control the redistricting process and gain an unfair (my word) advantage.

    I donate monthly to Democracy Docket Action Fund. It's money well-spent if you care about our democracy. That said, I am against non-citizens voting in local elections because it gives justification to voter suppression efforts everywhere. Fix the immigration system instead of patching it with green card voting.

      Well, this country was founded on freedom of religion and no taxation without representation. And if those immigrants are working, and most do, they are paying taxes and they are not being represented locally/in their state.
      We have needed an easier to navigate immigration system for decades. Most of the people coming to this country are leaving places that WE, as a nation, caused to become unstable. Far too often, this country has taken our big ol' stirring stick and stirred up a bunch of shit in places we had no business being.

      There is no end stage. There are cycles. If autocracy takes hold in the U.S. you can bet that anarchy if not domestic civil war will follow. It's like taking women's rights away from half the population. That is not a static situation that CAN last.

    We human beings tend to be specialists and the "separation of disciplines" which guides and governs school curricula plays a role.
    I share that because at the 30-minute point, where Mr. Berman mentions the Right's focus on gaining control of the nation's courts--should be tied to the rise of Right-wing Christian Fundamentalism. The courts were to be the bludgeon to destroy women's reproductive rights. The control of females is central to patriarchy and fundamentalist religions are the bastions of patriarchy.
    The number one threat to patriarchy is the independent woman while the cultural threat is the rise in status of Black citizens.
    As to environmental issues, that takes us to the merging of two key focal interests: the Right-wing Church and Energy corporations that wish to avoid the cost and responsibility for installing cleaner energy protocols and processes. Therefore, the Libertarians push for a version of "Free Enterprise" that pockets profits and externalizes costs (like exploding trains and oil spills) to citizens.

    Heather Fox Richardson, US historian extraordinaire brings history into todays state and possible future: And, as that concentration of wealth and power among a small group of people reveals, the real plan behind Project 2025 is the rule of a small minority of extremists over the vast majority of Americans.
    The plan asserts “the existential need for aggressive use of the vast powers of the executive branch” - that is, it calls for a very powerful leader - to dismantle the current government that regulates business, provides a social safety net, and protects civil rights.
    Instead of the government Americans have built since 1933, the plan says the national government must “decentralize and privatize as much as possible” and leave “the great majority of domestic activities to state, local, and private governance.”
    We have in front of us examples of what such governance means. Because state legislatures control who can vote and how the state’s districts are carved up, Republican-dominated state legislatures have taken absolute control of a number of states.
    There they have banned abortion without exceptions and defined a fertilized human egg as a person; discriminated against LGBTQ+ people and immigrants, banned books, attacked public education, and gutted business regulation, including child labor laws. They have also attacked voting rights.
    Project 2025 presents an apocalyptic vision of a United States whose dark problems can be fixed only by a minority assuming power under a strongman and imposing their values on the rest of the country.
    And yet the authors of the document assert that it is not them but their opponents who do “not believe that all men are created equal - they think they are special. They certainly don’t think all people have an unalienable right to pursue the good life. They think only they themselves have such a right along with a moral responsibility to make decisions for everyone else.”
    In 1776 the Founders were quite clear about the relationship between rights and government, and their vision was quite different than that of the authors of Project 2025.
    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” they wrote.
    They continued, “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men,” and that those governments were not legitimate unless they derived power “from the consent of the governed.”

    I remember agreeing with Michael Moore, when he said Chump was people's molotov cocktails. Although I didn't vote for the idiot, I understood how it could and did happen. What people didn't know, was Chump was going to turn out to be more like C4. Now the question is, do the people think they have made their point. I certainly hope so, and believe if all the non-cult members of our country get out and vote...Biden will win big.

      Record numbers of women and younger people have been registering. People don't like their rights being taken away and those young people have had to practice active shooter drills their entire life. There are about to be some changes coming. At least that's what I think. And what I hope!

    XIV Ammendment: “But when the right to vote … is denied …, or in any way abridged, …, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.”
    Apportionment should be reduced for voter suppression. In fact, a case can be made that apportionment should be based upon the whole number of voters in a state rather than citizens. Let’s see the get out the vote campaigns then if your state stands to loose representation of people don’t vote.

    It’s important to note that the gentleman misspoke. The census was created to count every living human being in the country regardless of citizenship because that data dictates some very significant Federal spending on the States and the amount of “Representation” those States have in Congress.

    Every person who has the right to vote but fails to vote is an example of a failure of government in a democratic system. These governments should be working to expand the number of people who vote.
