I saw her in March, and it was honestly the most genuine, powerful performance that I’ve seen on stage. She dug her heels into that role and threw everything she had into it. What’s funny is that I was Glee obsessed back in the day, and I think that it may have desensitized me to her voice some. I already knew that her singing was going to be out of this world (especially since i essentially saw her sing all of these songs on glee ten years ago). That was a given. No one doubted that - me included. So, while I’ve been a fan for a long time, what really made me sell my children so that I could buy that ticket was my desire to see how in the world her performance had gotten unanimous rave reviews. Everyone, just like me, has heard her voice. She was anything but popular when she started this run. And, really - hadn’t we seen her play Fanny Brice already. What could be so special? And then I saw the show. And immediately wanted to see it again. Her acting was fantastic and funny and sincere, and her voice was used as a tool to tell the story. It was not used to remind everyone of just how great her voice is. It did the job a fantastic voice in a Broadway show is meant to do: it taught me about Fanny. It told me how she was feeling. Parade was amazing, of course, but having seen why this character was so emphatic made it actually *mean* something. Her acting is what made this show for me, and I never expected that to be the case. I’m so happy she got a chance to play this role as her first step back to Broadway, because it has defined her for so long, and now everyone has gotten to see that part of her story play out. And as for My Man: I LOVE how it’s clearly a farewell from her to the audience. Her body language is informal and open, even as her vocals hold their usual weight. A perfect goodbye.
I agree with everything you said; I was already familiar with her from Glee, and knew she had an amazing voice…..but I wanted to see why she was getting such rave reviews, especially given how unpopular she was going into it. I saw it last October with crappy seats, and was mesmerized. By the final number, I knew I’d be back to see it again, but with better seats. I saw it again 6 months later with amazing seats, and it was THE best theater experience I have ever had, and worth ever penny.
Streisand also sang My Man on the last night of her run in Funny Girl .. i love that Lea kept the tradition of that ! Lea was exceptional in this show !
That night was so insane. The energy of the room could be felt throughout. The amount of ovations & bursts of applause & screams made that Sunday afternoon show feel more like a rock concert than the closing of a Broadway musical. Watching back my videos of this night is just insane. From listening through the intercom 'ladies & gentlemen; the role of Fanny Brice will be played by Lea Michele' to her speech at the end where she thanked the FG cast & crew & then getting the rendition of My Man. It all still feels like a dream.
Couldn’t agree with you more…she wanted it more than anyone I have seen want a show. Regardless what you think of her, she was meant to play that role and she nailed it. You are absolutely right, that song was hard for her to sing because that was the song she dedicated to Cory. ❤
This is excellent. Thanks for your commentary. She really is one of the best. When I went to see her on Broadway, I found myself in a bar next door listening to some guy spout on and on how she really isn’t very good. When I asked him “were you at the show? Have you seen her?” He answered , “well…no.” There is absolutely no denying her star power and what she’s done with this run. Just maginificent.
I think when she says about how difficult it is to sing was because it was the ending of the show. She was amazing. My favorite Broadway show I've ever seen.
Thank you for sharing this. I live in San Francisco and was fortunate enough to be able to see her performance twice, but this was special. I would have loved to be there in person for her last show. When she says it's the hardest song she has ever had to sing could be as you said about Cory, that makes sense, or just the fact that it's a very vocally challenging song in general. Whatever it is, you are correct, she was born to do this show and I was so happy it came to fruition for her. Thanks again for sharing it with us. 💖🎼🎹🎶🎵🎤🌠🌟
Thank you for this reaction; I agree with everything you said. She is so authentic here, and you can’t deny she’s a phenomenal talent. Whether you like her or not, she saved this production and the job of every person who was a part of it. Can’t wait to see what she does next :-)
Marc, it is always a pleasure to watch and listen to your commentaries. I did see FUNNY GIRL but with the understudy who, in my opinion, was respectable. Lea is on another level. I thought her rendition of “My Man” was so appropriate as her finale and she did rather well. Like you, I don’t know why this was difficult for her. Vocally, she nailed it and the audience rightfully supported her.
When she sang My Man on Glee, she did with an intro “Hello my name is Rachel Berry and I’d be singing the most difficult song I have I ever sung.” So I think that was the reference about hehe
@@neresqshe sang this song on Glee when Cory was still alive. The montage played because their characters had broken up and she still loved him. They used the same montage when she sang Who Are You Now in season 5 after he had died.
In a "Glee" episode called "Funeral" Rachel sings it for an audition at Nationals where she says “Hello my name is Rachel Berry and I’d be singing the most difficult song I have I ever sung.” That's because she was dedicating the song to her deceased "Glee" boyfriend, Finn, played Cory Monteith whom Lea was dating in real life when he died of a drug overdose. 2 minutes ago
He hadn’t passed away at that time on glee. When she’s seeing about him in glee it’s because they were broken up in the show. They weren’t even dating in real life at the time when she sang it on glee.
When I saw the clip I assumed she meant it was difficult because this was the very last time. It marked the end of her living her dream by playing the role. But now that you mention it, it sure could have been because of the associations with Corey Monteith. I went to NY to see her in the role in January. It was the most remarkable performances I have seen since Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz. It was a memory I will always cherish.
She was amazing in this role and I liked her in Glee as well. She did save this show. I hated to see Beanie not do as well as I'd hoped but Lea was so right for this role
Not sure if you saw the concert of Funny Girl in 2002 with a lot of Broadway stars, who have talent (unlike Beanie) and although they hit the notes, no one is quite right for the role of Fanny Bryce, LEA was simply perfect for this role.
RECOMMENDATION: Imelda Staunton's 'I'm Losing My Mind' from Sondheim's Follies is truly excellent and I think you'll have a lot of fun reacting to this legend of a performer.
Lea is wonderful but I saw someone even better last week, Katarina McCrimmon who is touring in Funny Girl and was in Providence. She was absolutely perfect in every way, the voice, acting, accent, just amazing. The ovations were as huge as I’ve seen in many years at PPAC. Check her out on youtube.

The Rachel casting was a little to close to home.
I am so glad I saw Lea's INCREDIBLE performance in person in April. So amazing - perfect merging of actor/singer/role!!

That forever at 2:02 had my ears ringingggggg she sounded absolutely amazing 😭😭😭

That note on “alright” my lord….

About it being hard is a quote from glee before she sings My Man and in that song her character was thinking about Cory''s character, Finn.
When she sang My Man on Glee, she did with an intro “Hello my name is Rachel Berry and I’d be singing the most difficult song I have I ever sung.” So I think that was the reference about hehe
Moreover, because she did this song over a montage of Cory Monteith as Finn after Cory, whom she was dating, died of a drug overdose.

"the most difficult song I have I ever sung.” it's a Rachel Berry line on the show, it was a nod to Rachel.
I saw the show live last September. I can’t endorse her as a person or workmate, but my goodness, she’s talented.
I saw the show in April and she was fantastic. I’m so sorry she didn’t sing My Man at that time.
Bernie 😂
She’s coming back for the revival of Chess next spring
I'd love to hear her sing it without the NY accent.
That’s her normal voice.
@@mshalo1822 I disagree... I've heard her many times without it.
RECOMMENDATION: Imelda Staunton's 'I'm Losing My Mind' from Sondheim's Follies is truly excellent and I think you'll have a lot of fun reacting to this legend of a performer.
She's better than Barbra! 😉
I hope you mean that sincerely because if you do, I’m right there with you thank God somebody finally said it.
Eesh
''I feel bad for Bernie, who started with the O.G. run ...'' ... That, of course, should be Beanie.
I still prefer Barbara’s rendition but Leah’s was good.

It's really not that hard to sing, not for me anyway.
Is calling Beanie "Bernie" shade?
love MDP!!
