    The "idea" of dragons running on water in the air instead of actually flying / levitating is actual Chinese mythology

      @Eugene Oisten what do you mean. The dragons reference in the movies are based on chinese dragons. The dragons resemble the types of wingless long serpentine dragons from chinese myth and the thought that the death of a dragon causes the thing it represents to disappear is similar to how in taoist myths the deities are direct links or physical manifestations of the thung their linked to.(because dragons are also somethings considered to be divinity or are straight up just gods). Also that pose that petrified people get into is a stance commonly found in chinese statues mostly of mortals asking for forgiveness. So it has tons of chinese myths aspects incorperated into it

    • @lifeisgood6279
      @lifeisgood6279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @Eugene Oisten true but the most widely known ones are from taoist and (technically) buddist religion both of which are known as 2 of the three largest religion of china for most of its existence. Yes i know buddhism orginated in india but the most well known stories were popularised from china not south east asia. How do i know this, cause i live in south east asia and the origin of most of my nations buddhist and taoist teachings come for china. I know hindism also has wingless dragons and japan has them as well but they are simply less well known so the assumption that the movie was indpired by taoist or buddhist beliefs is not wrong. Bruh

      @Eugene Oisten also china has been know for 3 major religions buddhism,taoism and confucionism most of which have their own local myths,legends and beliefs. And the idea that dragons are linked to water and rivers are connected to taoisms 4 directional dragon kings which are the most well known wingless dragons i believe. Perhaps i should stop arguing if you lump all three very distinct religious practices as 'chinese religion'

      A video game setting could also make more sense of the ending. Rather than just the world learning to stop hating each other rather randomly, the process could be a little more naturally pushed along in the form of various side quests and such where the main characters learn more about the other people in the world and that they aren’t as bad as they seem.

    Honestly, my biggest problem with this movie, and one of the reasons I feel like its message about trust doesn’t work, is because Raya and Namaari’s relationship is handled really badly and confusingly. The movie acts like they used to be good friends and that they really knew each other, but they didn’t. The only reason Namaari was being nice to Raya to begin with was because she was tricking her into letting her see the gem so she could take it. She literally meets Raya and betrays her in the same scene. I feel like if they did something similar to Moses and Ramses’s relationship from the Prince of Egypt where they grew up together as childhood friends, but due to the ongoing feud with their clans and their parents’ obsession with getting the gem, they slowly drifted apart and became enemies, then that would be a much more compelling and heartbreaking story, and it would at least give Raya a slightly better reason for being willing to trust her at all again. And I don’t normally say this, but honestly, I think Frozen did a better job with its theme about trust. While I would argue it’s not explicit or the main point of the story, I feel like there is an underlying theme when it comes to Anna and Elsa and how they trust/don’t trust people. Anna is extroverted, energetic, and willing to let anyone into her life, while Elsa is introverted, isolated, and unwilling to let anyone into her life out of fear of accidentally hurting them. The movie shows through Elsa’s isolation and through Hans being the twist villain that being too trustful or too untrustful can be dangerous. That is a way more interesting way to teach a message about trust to kids in my opinion. Anyway, let me know if u agree.

    • @kabo0m
      @kabo0m 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      63 people so far agree with you for a reason! You are 100% correct in your observations! I felt that Frozen had a better story, presentation for that story, better focus, and it all made sense.
      I mean why would Raya trust Namaari again... After such a betrayal?
      Raya just met Namaari and ooh they both liked dragons (uh .. wouldn't everyone if the WHOLE WORLD had such respect and honor for dragons who they looked at like gods) and let her see something she was supposed to protect with her life and had trained years to even get the privilege of getting to even see herself?
      Actually .. that should have been yet another Sin. Raya trains for years to even SEE it yet shows Namaari on the first day they met.

    I can't believe CinemaSins didn't sin the rather unhealthy message this movie attempted to deliver:trust everyone all the time,no matter what.
    Namaari never apologized about the coup she started when they were kids, stooped to victim-blaming Raya for killing Sisu when it was Namaari herself that brought a crossbow to their negotiation and aimed it at them in the first place.Her mother may have influenced her but in the end, the person who decides how Namaari acts is Namaari herself. She never apologized on-screen and that was a missed opportunity.
    Sisu's story about how her siblings trusted her with the gem is no way parallel to what Raya went through: Sisu was NOT harmed by what her siblings did, Raya was hurt by Namaari did and once again, Namaari didn't act like the adult she thought she was and apologize to Raya.

      I was expecting a "Disney doesn't know how rivers work" sin when I got here. But, geographically speaking, multiple rivers *could* conceivably flow out of a lake, BUT these rivers flow to nowhere. And I suppose the reversal of the water could mean that the rivers were flowing backwards before Sisu was revived, but then, if all springs lead to the lake, regardless of geography, where is the rest of the planet?

      so, I didn't like this movie or its message, but I think that the point there was that the dragons were already good, but humans are bad, so with humans still in the world, acting badly towards each other, there wasn't enough power in that first blast to undo all the damage, but when humans finally started working together (because the bad cloud thingies came about specifically because of human discord) it was finally enough to undo all the damage... 1) The message of the movie is to learn to trust people... which they demonstrate by making the protagonist trust the person who practically caused the end of the world, has shown no remorse for it, and has only ever interacted with her when she was trying to kill her.
    2) Making a movie themed around an action hero martial artist princess and giving her enemies that cannot be harmed by physical means
    2a) ...which makes the climax just being people holding their little Not-Phials of Galadriel glowy rocks and shouting "Haaaa!" at formless shadow things
    3) Everybody here comes from a warrior culture but the only people that we ever see really demonstrating that are Raya and Naamiri. Kind of makes the giant warrior guy from Spine pointless when there's nothing for him to do.

    Wayy too much storytelling and exposition in this movie. In fact, I only liked the dragon because she was voiced by Awkwafina! And the visuals were amazing, but I don't think my kids got it AT ALL, and I was even confused. I would like to point out that this entire movies plot was due to a pre teen girl trusting some outsider girl she never met before THINKING that she could keep a secret of where a precious gemstone was and NOT call to arms every tribe in the area. I mean there's child like innocence and sheer stupidity that im sure even 6 year olds were scratching their heads when they first saw this

      I have a book smart(straight a student) preteen step daughter, you'd be surprised how dumb they are, my step daughter almost gave up our address to a little girl she never met before while we were in line to get lunch, this movie sucked ass hard but that part ain't why

    • @dua_junaid
      @dua_junaid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Actually that part was believable. Not saying there aren't any preteens with common sense, but if you think back to a time when you met someone you _really_ got along the first time meeting and thinking "wow we're going to be besties forever cause we clicked so fast," forgetting that you barely know this other child and revealing everything about your life to them. It's nativity that does exist, and it's very common in preteens especially because they're so trusting never imagining the bad intentions many people may have.

      I was actually really curious how things would have gone if the girls hadn’t gone there. The other Fang folks knew to respond to the flare, so there was obviously some kind of plan in place. Perhaps Namaari wasn’t the only one given a flare, perhaps the plan was for someone to sneak around and find the gem chamber on their own, and Raya trusting Namaari just made things go a little faster.

      Like, they could have pulled an Inception-esque ending by having the camera linger longer on the lightly losing light loss, and have it feel full of futile flickers for the finale frames, exempting the extinguishing of the illumination's emissions and leaving the ending *just* open-ended enough that the viewers get to debate whether or not the world gets fixed, without overtly telling us if it does. . .

    Yeah, I know I'm going to sound like a horrible human being for saying this, but I REALLY didn't like the movie, personally.
    I thought the writing was too childish while still wanting to be taken seriously, I thought that all the characters were 2-dimensional at best, and the humor was just extremely forced. I also thought that Awkwafina was not a great choice for Sisu's character design as the dragon. When she was the human, I bought it, but when you have a dragon that looks like Elsa's fursona with a voice of your Aunt Margaret on her 12th cigarettes of the day, it's very distracting for me.
    I'll admit, the animation is still good, the virtual camerawork is STELLAR, the concepts involved with water dragons are impressive, but I was just not only unsatisfied, but aggravated.
    I could just be subliminally comparing this to Tangled, Frozen, Moana, Wreck-It Ralph, or just other better CGI Disney movies, but I just have to say that I think this is very overrated.

      I completely agree lol… I also thought the pacing was really weird and sped up, I think it’s because of the ambitious world building, which I did like, but there was no time to explore the world or the characters and there seemed to be no set demographic, parts were kinda serious, other parts completely childish…. I didn’t feel anything for the characters.. maybe if this was a series, with more time to develop and with more mature writing it could have been great, but as it is, I thought it kinda sucked because it completely missed the pacing, characterisation and tone.

      Is the movie overrated? To be honest, I've not seen anyone talking about it at all. The most I've heard about this movie is now this Sin's video. I passed on it when I heard they put modern jokes in it that breaks the immersion but that was all I had heard until today. I saw Frozen talked about everywhere and saw Moana talked about a lot, yet this movie? its like it came out, no one saw it, then was forgotten.

      I absolutely agree. Superficially pretty but paced and plotted poorly. Awkwafina's voice did not match the "dragon" (it's a fluffy snake ffs) and the dialogue was so annoying. If they'd found middle ground between Sisu's blind trust and Raya's complete distrust it would've been a much better message (i.e You can respect/ work with someone without them earning your trust and you need to learn to look after yourself). Also the Rise of Skywalker mcguffin collecting to get to the final climax is really getting old, is there any Disney climax that does an artifact to collect at the moment??

    Namaari’s mother died because Namaari took the stone to lure Raya and Sisu into trusting her. So she didn’t have it with her to defend herself. Even though I agree it would have been more interesting to have Raya fight both of them and get Namaari onto her side while her mother was there.

  • @TamTroll

    18:05 i think the reason no one else goes into the "Hand cup" pose is because other then Raya, everyone else's hands are on someone else or otherwise obstructed.
    Boun's hands are around Raya's leg
    Tong has one hand on Raya's back and one holding Noi
    Noi i think has her hands pressed against Tong? idk she should probably have the cup-hands too, maybe it's because she's on her back instead of standing?
    the monkeys have their arms wrapped around Tong's leg
    and Namaari has her hand on Raya's shoulder.
    Best i can tell, becoming a statue physically moves your body into that pose rather then magically pops you into it, or phases through solid objects. Tong and Namaari don't have their heads pressed up against anyone else, so their heads still take the position. Other then Tong, the Noi, and the monkeys, i think everyone's feet are in the right position too. Tong might have his feet stay in place because of the monkeys around his foot. and again, Noi is being held.
    If you were turned to stone while hugging a tree or possibly sleeping in bed, you might keep that pose instead of going cup-hands as well.
