“Between 12 and 18” - such a thought-provoking and real point. The most notable and mysterious transition for me was a totally spontaneous pivot from thinking Name was a decent song to hearing and being mesmerized by the chorus of Black Balloon…it’s like the Kool-Aid man blasted through a wall. Name became something life-altering to me. One of the best songs quite literally of all time.

Live music is spiritual, it just is!! I hear John talk about Petty & other great artists & it hits me that he may not see himself as one of the great writers, I think he is! I am older & have loved the GGD's since the 80's but it's because of the writing & the music. I think John's writing is raw & it comes from his depths, his place in life. Lyrics are musical poetry & he's great at it. His guitar playing with so much rhythm & riffs is unique. There was always a vulnerability & emotion in his music that always hooked me & drew me in!

What a great interview. My favorite song of Tom Petty is Refugee. I loved it the first time I heard it on the radio when it first came out! Name is like my signature song. While I was in the Navy when I'd go to a bar, I never told anyone the right name or place of work or residence. My thing was I wanted to drink beer and shoot pool. So I'd never tell anyone my name.

A ways back I saw Johnny’s band at Dodger Stadium. He was playing a Les Paul Junior (or was it a Special🤔), anyways, his punk rock credentials were pretty undeniable!🤘😎
