The main lesson is to stick to well trodden routes. If you are in a survival situation, do not attempt new, unknown routes. These may be much more difficult than imagined and cause the party to perish. A second lesson is to begin the journey in a timely manner, especially if snow id forecast later. Better to wait until the following year and start a month or two early. A third lesson is to take more food supplies than you calculate for: dried beans, salt fish (fishing hooks and line), flour, salt beef, corn, sugar, baking soda, oil, and medicines. Aim to catch game en route to protect current food supplies.
@@chicagogyrl4846 Chicago -- Perhaps they didn't have any fishing tackle on them! The Donner Party starved because they ran into winter blizzards in the Sierra Nevada. They couldn't move, ran out of supplies, and didn't know how to harvest meagre food supplies from mother nature in winter.
I played James Reed in a Donner Party documentary. So I studied, read and rode horses over most of the route Well done! And the emotion it deserves. My movie family survived .. 5 kids, wife and my movie self to enjoy beautiful california.
Perhaps you actually mean......"moving self"? Also, CA is where I have lived since '56.....currently 110 miles north of San Francisco, and from this computer office window (and 1100' elevation) about one mile away, I can see the mighty Pacific Ocean....and am now 84 years old.
Tough situation…people judge them to this day because most of us have never known starvation. We can’t say what we would or wouldn’t do to stay alive and survive.
Some one said his grandmother was Born so long ago she went west on a Constoga wagon and a long time later she Returned back flying on a passenger jet .......just lolzz 737 coming out of the sky we gotta move playing in a travelin Band

You can’t start a month or two early because there wouldn’t be any grass to eat for the animals!
Many of these people were rich, and didn’t know how to hunt or fish! That’s why they starved!

@@chicagogyrl4846 Chicago -- There might not be as much grass, but there certainly would have been some. Grass never totally dies off.
