  • Full movie of my 5 Day 114KM Solo canoe camping trip in Algonquin. this was a couple weeks after ice out and a perfect time to go out.
    In this video, we take a journey into Algonquin Provincial Park and explore the area's beauty and rustic charm, as well as some great fishing opportunities.
    This 5 day trip takes you through some of the lesser travelled parts of Algonquin Park, where you'll have the chance to try out some of the area's best fishing. I will take you to some of the park's most beautiful spots, where you can fish for trout in crystal clear waters. Don't miss out - this is one adventure you won't want to miss!
    The goal of this trip was to relax, disconnect and search for native brook trout in the heart of Algonquins backcountry.

    You planned that hunk of salami perfectly..lol. Excellent adventure, enjoyed every minute of it especially your simplicity and minimal gear/weight. Looks to be a terrific route to stretch out the fly rod and adopt a single carry

    • @DerekSOutdoors

      salami rationing is a backcountry skill learned from many last day salami'less wraps of previous trips 😅
      And thanks for the kind comments, I like to pack for single carry, it gives me the option for single carry when the portage is easy or do a double when it gets more technical. My boat is also quite small so can't hold a second backpack anyway... You know the saying, when you get a bigger boat or bag, "you find ways to fill it" 😂

    Great video. I had been wondering about getting to Crow River by heading upstream from Lake Travers, but didnt know how doable it was (especially in spring high water). Glad to see it is very possible, even in a single day...

    • @DerekSOutdoors

      Yup, it is indeed paddle-able, I was there 3 weeks after ice out for that trip last year.
      It would be good to plan for some headwinds when heading up river on the Petawawa because you are going west into the prevailing winds and the river can turn into a wind tunnel in some areas

      I use a 12foot H2O pack boat, probabaly should have went with the 13footer for a bit more storage, but this one is good for navigating around smaller creek and rivers .

    man you are a god at fly fishing. why do you have multiple fly rods? and how do you decide which one to use?

    • @DerekSOutdoors

      I have different flies tied onto each rods and different fly lines as well. It is like bass fishing where you see the anglers have multiple lures and setups for each situation. I usually bring a 4wt with a floating line for fishing in the streams, then a 6wt with a sinking tip to fish with streamers. Also bring a spinning rod for trolling around 😅

    • @wc4572

      @@DerekSOutdoors I see I've only ever used a spinning rod but watching you fly fish makes me want to learn. Can you recommend a good all rounder rod/reel setup for a beginner to use in Algonquin/Credit?

    • @DerekSOutdoors

      @@wc4572 I fish the upper credit a fair bit. Most people say to start with a 9foot 5wt rod, but I find a 8 or 9 foot 4 wt will be better suited for Algonquin and the credit. (Shorter rod like a 8ft better if you plan on fishing really brushy streams and small rivers, and a 9ft for if you plan to hit the more open water)
      I don't think brand matters as much as just getting the correct weight and length of rod... I'd start out with a floating line as well as it is more versatile and you can practice different casts and techniques

    So you book two trips for one person on a lake?

    • @DerekSOutdoors

      Nope, I book 2 separate trips (and pay 2 separate booking fees)
      First one that would start at my access point and when I get to a road block on the system because it says it is too far distance then I would start booking a 2nd trip so I can go to the camp/lake that I want to make it to the next days.
