FYI Katie I have an ultegra rx rear derailleur it has an clutch … the really important thing for climbers is that it can handle easily up to a 36 tooth in the back without any adaptations…. It has a longer b screw, longer pivot length, and a longer arm than the standard long arm ultegra rear derailleur- I don’t use the clutch component. I just really like it’s wider range capacity… I found that it works far better then a road link and long arm ultegra derailleur.. the shifting with an 11-36 os just as good as a standard 11-32 with an ordinary medium arm Ultegra derailleur

I am a former distance champion and in 1978 set the American record of 462 miles (743km) for 24 hours. A few years later I paced the great John Howard for the first 300 miles in Central Park N.Y. for his 525/24 with drafting allowed. I have done 100 miles on 30 consecutive days in three different years. I am hoping to shed some light for you guys regarding ultras. Most importantly They can burn your love for the bike up in smoke as I did not ride for a decade after Central Park. About training progressive distances: it does not work for me. Prior to my 24 hr. record, I had ridden 200 miles only twice and neither within a month before. For me, there is something intangible that can get used up by these rides. it is physical, mental and not always easily replenished and not to be inadvertently tapped into in the preparation phase. I often say that my ultra distance ability is like finding that you could be the one who makes the Guinness Book of Records for burning your arm the most times with a cigarette! These distances, again I speak for myself, are not for your health. I would tell tales about my cross America solo rides and was always met with the question that I am sure many of you are met with; What is the farthest you have ridden in a day? My recommendation would be to limit your ultra riding to just a couple per year and the rest of your cycling maybe try to increase your speed and strength, as racing cyclists do, for most of your miles. This may keep your love of cycling alive! Case in point; I am now 70 years old and have not ridden more that 50 miles in a day this year. Last Friday I rode 130 miles and finished with plenty of daylight and good legs.
That's a really good insight. I burned myself out and I haven't ridden properly now for 5 years. There's really no enjoyment to do long rides and the cars, well, they just get right on my f..g nerves.

You have to build up gradually. The saddle is not gonna make that much difference. Bibs will. Brooks saddle maybe but depends on your sit bones/pelivs width.
Do you take back up (power bank) battery’s to keep your devices charged? Also, why not ditch the garmin and just use your phone, the weight you could save? And you thoughts on Dynamo or not? 🙂🙂
@@KatieKookaburra Just wanted to follow up, I had mine delivered (found it for £15 new!) and it's significantly more comfortably for me as a guy than selle slr saddle. Now I just need a 4h+ ride to test it properly
Weird Q..where did you get that charging cable with multiple ends?? It looks like it's a sensible length and not crazy long like all the ones I've seen!
Wondering what is the longest you've rode in 24hrs? What is your training/nutrition like leading up to a big ride? I am looking to attempt 322/200. 241/150 being my longest.
I think you can ease up on the toilet paper. Normal toilet paper takes about 1-3 years to fully decompose. This is longer than most people would guess, but it does take time for those strong wooden fibers to fully biodegrade. Biodegradable toilet paper, on the other hand, will take about 1-2 months to fully decompose. The process for all kinds will be quicker if the paper is exposed to water.
Oooh also I meant to add I don’t ever leave the loo roll out in nature. Never! Always bring it back with me until I find a toilet or bin :) always keep a specific bag to bring it back in.
I assume your bike is light (carbon/graphite)? That's what I use for distance. What kind of tires do you use? And rim brakes YEAH! And I swear I'll never ask you what saddle you use ever again...

@@markrushton1516 hahaha maybe but I do like their philosophy. I’ve had some issues and basically it all comes back to what feels nature. So I do like how they are questioning how riders have been pedaling for so long. It’s smoke and mirrors until enough people start to believe in it. Hahaha. Let’s see. Hence why I wanted a pro or someone who actually is in this field to evaluate it.

Have you ever weighed all that kit all together? Just out of curiosity? Obviously it can’t be avoided, you have to take it
Nah I don’t bother with weight - just take what I need :)
Fail to prepare ---- Prepare to Fail (Si from Bath) ps ace vids
Hi Katie, I know it's different for everyone, but what Bib / pants do you wear on these long rides?
I have a mixture - Cafe du Cycliste, Maap and Rapha are my go-tos. But try on a few different pairs and get the best fit for you :)
I know saddles are very individual but what one do you use? I've had so much trouble with numbness it makes me so nervous to cycle :(
You have to build up gradually. The saddle is not gonna make that much difference. Bibs will. Brooks saddle maybe but depends on your sit bones/pelivs width.
Be good to get a video on your favourite podcasts 👍🏻
I listen to a few on repeat for motivation 😎😂
@@KatieKookaburra haha well that's good but that doesn't help me listen to them myself...
Interviews with awesome riders, Fiona Kolbinger, Mark Beaumont, Abdullah Zeinab. Search them and listen to any of them :)
Do you take back up (power bank) battery’s to keep your devices charged? Also, why not ditch the garmin and just use your phone, the weight you could save? And you thoughts on Dynamo or not? 🙂🙂
most phones aren't water proof though and you don't get the battery life from a phone like a dedicated bike computer.
Nah I just take the one power bank. If it was a really long one I would take a power bank and Dynamo charger :)
Also using a phone over 300km plus wouldn’t be ideal for me as it souls drain the battery too much I think.
❤️🔥
Looks like you have two exposure lights in the front?
Yeah I talk about them both in the video 🙃🙄
@@KatieKookaburra are you gonna make me watch it again to find out or can you tell me the time mark in the video
Hi Katie, what saddle has worked for you on such long rides?
I have a Bontrager Ajna that they no longer make - but I'm currently looking at s few new ones. I also like the Specialized Power Mimic! :)
@@KatieKookaburra Thanks!
Amazon, special :)
@@KatieKookaburra ooh! what brand should I look for please and thank you?
No idea any will do the job :)
Which connector did you use for the front light that attaches to the k-mount
It’s the one that comes with Exposure lights 😍
Katie dont suppose you have a link to where i can get the mount for my exposure?….bit of a noob👌
Wondering what is the longest you've rode in 24hrs?
What is your training/nutrition like leading up to a big ride?
I am looking to attempt 322/200. 241/150 being my longest.
It was 420km but that was under 24hrs. Also distance depends on how hilly the ride is.
I'm currently stuck at a certain millage on rides and finding it difficult to progress further, any useful tips please?. :-)
Have a search on my channel, loads of building endurance :) and way more detail than I could give in a quick reply in the comments
Determination
Are you allowed to ride with headphones in GB
Yeah i think so …
Cool 🔥👍
super!!
You look amazing love your videos.
Cheers Anthony :)
This is such good info THANK YOU! I’m going to get some biodegradable loo roll now! :)
Oooh also I meant to add I don’t ever leave the loo roll out in nature. Never! Always bring it back with me until I find a toilet or bin :) always keep a specific bag to bring it back in.
Sorry, but if I am going to take a massive shit in the wilds that bogroll is staying there. It's biodegradable
Minha adorável, gosto muito das dicas.
How many extra kg is that? Damn
Rim 🦂
💪💚
I assume your bike is light (carbon/graphite)? That's what I use for distance. What kind of tires do you use? And rim brakes YEAH! And I swear I'll never ask you what saddle you use ever again...
I have 25s Michelin Power Road 💪🏼👍🏼
@@KatieKookaburra LOL Thanks coach!
Get you with all your rings on. Don't they add weight ? :]
Can you research, test, and give your opinion on the new Pedaling Innovations catalyst pedals? A different way to pedal. Feel like they are on to something but would like your expert opinion.
They are just long flat pedals. No clip in. Suspect smoke/mirrors myself.
@@oneopinion5231 Some Shimano sponsorship/love on this channel so dont expect to see them. Plus they are flat. OK for what flat pedals are ok for
I'd like to share a ride with you.
My bike is a battleship compared to Katie's bikes.
Очень красиво!
i would love to go credit card tour
Att ctear like always have a great WE ciao ciao
I'm never tired you girlsplaining things 😂😂😂
I don’t think you know what it means 🤣🤣 Mansplaining or womansplaining -as you put it - is UNWANTED advice. Whereas you clicked on a video of me explaining my set up. So maybe click on other vids next time 😎😎🤣🙄😘
@@KatieKookaburra just joking Katie. I follow your vids couse you provide some good advice and experiences. Unlike some other IG cycling models who ride creaking bike and complain about mansplaining. I get it, everyone likes attention and prefer good one at that. For me (as I don't have IG) content aren't just good looks and pretty pictures. I like real work advice and expirience, as willingness to communicate with your audience. Thank you, Katie.
Katie's hard as nails did 80 miles on Monday nearly did me in.
somehow an endurance ride for me is 15+ miles. 😂
Need a turbo bike.
