Great vid Katie I also use Aeropex which are the older ones I bought them ages ago when u first mentioned them brilliant.. sound quality isn’t as good as full in ear but good enough and you can hear things around you which is awesome 😎 need to get some new marigolds now

Hello Kooka "donkey" (in Spanish). The Spanish thing is an irony for travelers who from time to time leave Boris (the squatter at 10 Downing St) and come to the "warmth of the south". In recent years, TH-camrs and the "bicycle business" proposed us to carry bags on the handlebars (grills, baskets...) now a "carbon support" (expensive) to carry a "little bag with things", on top of the back wheel. The "bicycle business" will soon propose the usual saddlebags, and they will also "sell" us the advantages of the low center of gravity.

It'd be super interesting if you could do a breakdown of what you ate each day. I always struggle with getting nyhead around just how much I need to eat on longer rides, and often end up depleted dispite thinking I've been eaten enough 😅

With a little research I'm really impressed with Ribble Bikes and for your application and the riding you do have your entire kit down to a fine science, particularly the generating hub lighting setup and concise tools for mechanicals. Unfortunately there is no distribution for Ribble in Canada but I believe you can order them direct and pay duties. I've sold bikes and spun wrenches for a living but have kind of moved on from the retail side and am framing Art now. Nothing will stop me from keeping up with bike and sport gear though! I'm currently down to a F-sus Turner MTB, a Giant Cross bike and a Norco Fat bike for winter. You can't just have one bike!
sadly I found their (Ribble) customer service well, unless to be honest. I took a particular dislike to the lack of attention where the tubes on the frame where welded.
I opted in the end purchasing a frame from Mason cycles and built the bike myself. I have to say Mason cycles where bl00dy awesome, beautiful bike with great customer support/help.
Love the tailfin! It's one of the best investments I ever bought for my bike. It easily shallows up a cool bag for my lunch (don't judge me😅), plus loads of extra bits & pieces. Well worth every penny & a real pleasure to use.

Thanks for this, I am planning a 1000km off road bike trip. I have changed my mind on kit so often. It’s nice to get a recommendation from someone who has done this length of trip, who can talk from personal experience.

Hey Katie, new subscriber as I recently stumbled across your videos and loving the down to earth approach! Potentially daft question, but is the 20l bag compatible with any rack or does it need to be paired with the Tailfin rack? Love how practical it is to use but I already have a perfectly good rack fitted 🙈 Cheers!

Have you considered tubeless tyres? Don't have them myself but understand that they are more comfortable as running on lower pressure. May be beneficial on long rides.
I have but I personally prefer tubes for road. Just simple :)
Been looking at the Tailfin as my rack top bag has seen better days. All the night riding makes sense to have a back-up for the front light. The velotoes did they actually keep your feet dry, I also use mountain bike shoes and haven't found an overshoe to fit them, yet.
Overshoes will only keep them dry to a point - it was raining 12 hours+ so can’t expect miracles. But they are SUCH a pain to get on and off! They were MTB specific

Hi Katie, Just have two questions: the restrap tyre boot kit - did you use it and would you recomed it? I have fair skin as well and i am liable to get freckels would you recomed the Solait Face Sun Cream? I was thinking of a mineral cream - what are your thoughts?

Great update. Re the spare mech hanger I bought one following a previous video you did. Haven’t needed to use it yet but it’s peace of mind. And also the spare chain clips that you also recommended for emergencies. Now that the Garmin 1040 Solar is out will you be getting that as it will greatly extend your usage time without having to charge if you do further extended journeys ? Are you keeping the front dynamo light on the bike ?
The light is just for events like this :) glad you got the spare mech hanger - always good to have!!

That was quite a comprehensive amount of kit. I'm surprised you didn't have a spare cleat with you amongst the mech hanger & quick links?

V.unlikely those Shimano cleats will break. Possibly lose a bolt but tighten them beforehand.
I stick a couple of spd bolts in my rack mount holes on long rides for this reason. Take them out when you get back though or your bike will be 2g heavier!
Or you could use that loctite compound (blue?)that holds the bolts in place.
That weighs 3g though 😜
Katie, does the Monkeysee harness meet the reflectivity requirements for Audax? I think I would like that better than a vest. Our requirements in the US refer to EN1150 or ANSI/ISEA 107 certification. Want to know if it worth getting one shipped. Thanks!

What size of cassette do you have on the back to complement the 46/30 chain set? Good low gearing for those steep climbs, I’d imagine.
Whatever you want and can fit, loads of options - 34 is a good one!
I don’t think 3 inner tubes for 1100k is excessive. That’s what I ride in a month and I could easily puncture 3 times in a month so I think you were spot on. 👍

It’s mega!! :) and yup got enough equipment for 10,000 miles. Just need to top up the food supplies. That’s the thing with bikepacking etc is the armoury you take for one trip is what you would take on one ten times as long. All essentials :)
Great video. Do you not like hi-vis clothing/helmet? I wear it all the time because drivers in the states are not as use to bike riders. Btw, I love your channel!
Yeah for sure but the waterproof jacket is black only as the fabric is waterproof. But did you not see my marigolds? See them a mile off :)

I had at least twice what Katie had here, but I was never going to be a top ten. Slept out each night, so it’s horses for courses, no sleep, hotel, camping, the best sleeping bag I have ever used and so tiny is the SEA TO SUMMIT SPARK there are 4 in the series so test which is best for you and your season. They have a unisex ( which means men ) sleeping bag so for women check out YETI now NORDISK for female bags, worth the effort getting a female bag if your a female as ratings are different (sort of) manufacturing shape is better suited. Air mat was a neoair by thermarest but they puncture easily. check out how sleeping bags work because “no air mat no warm” simply put. And a bivi bag. But I am yet to get a mech hanger rather worryingly.

You need to be sure about R values. Sleeping bag companies are supposed to rate there stuff based on testing and common testing BUT…..
Anyway a female bag is probably best but some women will be fine in a mens or unisex ( mens )
I suspect NORDisk Passion used to be called YETI ( I had a bag from them years ago ) would sort out female sleeping bag shape style and stuffing of insulation.
R values state a bag is tested with a air mat or insulated mat underneath that is I think R6 to R8 or something. A small light air mat is likely to be R3 to R4 which is a compromise. And the sleeper needs to have a full length base layer so if you don’t you compromise again a tiny bit.
Check out sea to summit spark ( but they are mens bags )
I just do completed North Cape 4000 and slept in a hotel for 4 nights only. Two were due to issues thst needed sorting in town and a train ride away so hotel it was. I was totally comfortable in the woods and slept very well indeed. Every one can.
Bikepacking from hotel to hotel isn’t bickpacking. And packing for stays in hotels and not the woods isn’t bike packing either. Bike packing races need to be sleeping out and not hotel hopping. That’s called cycling between hotels and anyone can do that.

If a shop doesn’t know what a womens specific sleeping bag is walk out.
If you comfortable in a man’s bag or a unisex bag then sea to summit I have used Spark 2 but I will get a spark 1 too was perfect from Alba Ultra and APN22 and north cape 4000 all in 2022. For APN and Alba Ultra I slept outside each night.

Not tired them but would like to give them a go :) just take a bit of getting used to as it changes your whole position
No face cream, makeup etc? Even toothpaste 😝. However just got the Tailfin from my brother. It’s incredible.. I don’t even feel I’m carrying any weight. Fits on my gravel bike and now mtb with the right wheel attachment. Great review thank u!
The SPF was face cream :) toothpaste was in a little tub but I cleaned it out so didn’t film that :)

Bag zips always seem to be the first thing to fail... I used to put candle wax on metal zips but trying squirt on the plastic ones...so far much smoother operation,,, dont know if it will affect waterproofness
Had a tent zip seal up after a mouldy incident with a damp wooly hat left in an inside pocket from the previous trip; multi-purpose oil did the job with that one. The same bottle that now oils my hair clippers.
how do you feel about the garmin edge compared to the wahoo that , i believe you also had ?
The Garmin is way better! The only reason I moved away from Garmin was the battery life and that has been increased SO much and think it’s the best battery life of pretty much most other units on the market IMO.

Katie, I really want to get a top tube bag, and I know you have previously recommended a topeak one, but I'm concerned that it will scratch the paint off the frame... What's your thoughts?

Always wonder how it feels to ride on a Dinamo... Did and Have never invested in one why? well is a Cost-Benefit thing, Seems in my Educated guess one needs to put some power/speed minimum to generate a good decent light out there, And needs to be constant ... Here where I live we have hills and mountains everywhere... and probably any good bike packed experience is full of climbing even on nights ... and mostly off-road surfaces, probably climbing under 10 km hr perhaps 7 average... some times less... soo I will keep asking ... in your experience KK, do you think will it work for me (a Dinamo)? am sure in descents should be fine and better than my current set up that is barely a 1000 lamp sometimes on 500 because we use it on low to endure all night. your thoughts on it?
It doesn’t really feel that different with the Dynamo, and for the reliability of constant light it’s well worth it :)
I used to have a dynamo on my bike as a kid in the 80s/90s and it was a noisy drag that required more puff to overcome the inertia than I had in my skinny legs, managing only to get the slightest trickle of light out of it once I'd got over the starting hump. But I imagine technology has come a long way since then, not to mention the size of my quads...🦵⚡🦵

They set it up initially for when I did this back in 2019 but now it’s just a case of switching wheels and plugging it in :)

With all that equipment, for such a long journey, you may use a trailer instead ? Something like a Burley Travoy for ex.

What made you choose the Garmin over the Wahoo?
A few reasons…Garmin battery life is phenomenal and the ProClimb feature is just great. So so good for hilly days. Also the Roam had a glitch that it would stop recording / navigating around 12 hours in. So would be stuck with no navigation until a full reboot. And it happened on multiple rides, so just couldn’t trust it any longer.

Everyone says tailfin are too expensive. Once you try it on your bike though, there is no other option. I have a thruaxle on my mtb, gravel bike and road bike so can switch between each within seconds. I would use nothing else EVER

Awww I never mentioned those…. In the wash and put away. They were just cheap ones from Decathlon. Peter Storm I think is the brand. Not the greatest but just to keep most of the wet off my bibs :)

Oh, boring: I've just completed 1413km around mid France, without any of this modern stuff. My Holdsworth, tent, panniers, and other important items (think corkscrew) are now all 42 years old, but still working well.
Me? Still riding strongly, aged 76.
