I thought Sing was an OK movie at best. Yes, It's not Zootopia, but when comparing it to other Illumination Movies, it could have been a whole lot worse.

But Lance cheating on her, in their own apartment, caused her to have an emotional breakdown. Especially since she was singing "Call Me Maybe", a song that rubbed salt in the wound due to it's naive viewpoint of relationships.

13:47 Johnny actually caused the crash that ended up stopping him from getting back to the heist. When he races to get to the theatre he makes a quick turn, causing the buffalo to crash into the monkey's car. I like that little detail, it's one of those 'blink and you'll miss it' moments.
If there's anything I'll give Sing credit for, is that they did a surprisingly good job balancing all the separate plots. They didn't try to combine all of them and I was fine with that, although I feel like a tv show could've and still could (if Illumination plans to do tv shows) explore them more in depth.
I agree, I don't dislike the film. It was alright for its time and I really was interested in Johnny's story and some of the jokes/concepts of the characters, I think Sing has a lot of potential to be great but for me, it was okay but could've turned out a lot worse.
Johnny's or Ash's story would've been interesting. The other characters... no. Just no. Everyone else is dull and bland. I don't hate it, I'm just disappointed on how much potential the film had and how it wasted it.

Twp things I'd like to point out, regarding Johnny most of all. When he's rushing to his rehearsal, he actually causes the accident that he later gets stuck in. It's a quick scene but if you watch that sequence again, you can see that as he's racing to get to the theater he causes two cars to collide. These same cars are the ones that end up holding him up and getting the crew busted. Second, regarding the father doing a complete 180 upon seeing Johnny perform... I can assume you weren't a father at the time of recording this video. You might have understood the scene a bit better if you were, namely that was a scene of him realizing that his son had found something that made him happy, that he was good at. He sees the joy on Johnny's face, and he hears how well he sings. It's easy to see why he'd do a 180. What father wouldn't want their child doing something they're good at that they enjoy?
Agreed i really enjoyed it when I first saw it and there our flaws both there good moments and if illuminations learn from the flaws since this is the first moves in the franchise so it will be far from perfect but if they make those flaws not becoming a thing in the sequel its could be amazing and be a big hit im hoping thats what will happen and im hoping they won't screw it up
I heard somewhere that the real reason they decided to have animals, when people in the movie would have not changed the plot one bit, was because Illumination takes shortcuts and cuts corners, and animals are apparently easier to animate than humans.
That's the dumbest part of the movie, is the world is boring. They just put animals in human houses, human jobs, and human life. They should have spiced it up to make it look more like a world really run by animals, like Zootopia did for its world.

Got to give Sing credit for tackling serious subjects like prison, cheating partners and marital stress. When done wrong these areas can come off as cheesy or unrealistically resolved. Even for a kids movie, I think Sing covered these pretty decently.
"What's the point of them being animals if they're not going to play with it?" Well, as it turns out, bipedal animals are easier to animate then humans. So, the answer is essentially laziness.
It's not just ease of animation it's also a tactic used to make ethnically ambiguous characters, it's done alot in any media for children. We're actually pushed to use animals because kids like animals and "no one is excluded". Which is ironic because now everything is animals instead of kids seeing a variety of people in their media.
Yeah, I really hated how they were just animals in a human world. In human houses, human buildings, everything was bland. Remember in Zootopia they made the world unique to fit animals lifestyles instead of just putting them in a human like environment?
I definitely agree. They're also gonna dumb it down again when it comes to any of the more "complex"(?) characters like Ash or the Monkey guy. They both seem to have doubts and a slight bit of trauma.
I didn't notice until watching this that Ash's sunglasses in her performance are the same ones that the other female porcupine left behind when she kicked her out. i kinda love that

FWIW, there definitely WERE animal “relationships” in this. Lions and buffalos are hardcore enemies and buffalos regularly “wreck” lions lol. For the jail scene, crocodiles eat antelopes (not a deer), the buffalo bull was talking to a buffalo cow, and then of course the tortoise and the hare.
My take on Illumination is this: Despicable Me 1 and 2, as well as this movie (if heavily flawed) were fine in my book, the rest however were either mediocre (Pets 2, Lorax) or pretty bad (Minions, pretty much every other movie from them)
I actually liked "Sing" when it came out in theaters a few years ago. I just hope the sequel doesn't take away much from what made the first one decent.

I actually really like Sing. I thought, while the obvious Illumination problems are there, the actual movie was pretty cool, had a nice message, and I really liked most of the characters.
ikr??? It's a down-to-Earth, realistic setting with nice people and institutional/social problems, I think the movie fucking slaps. I watched it at the cinema when it came out, cried 6 times during it. Then rewatched it a few years later, cried just as many times. Who the fuck CARES if the characters are non-human animals?? They did a fantastic job with their designs and I think that each character's story is very charming.
Kinda makes you wonder if there's animal versions of all the artists whose songs they use. Like an animal Nikki Minaj or Elton John. And since they have "hallelujah" is there animal religion? What animal is Jesus?
Compared to a lot of their other crap, this is actually not a bad movie by Illumination's standards. I know they missed a lot of hits with jokes and opportunities to use the animals' distinct traits. But just because you have an elephant doesn't mean it has to be loud. I actually think a shy elephant is a good subversion of expectation. It would be just like Zootopia if it made use of all the stereotypical animal traits that we seem to expect from anthro animals. And not only would it get branded as unoriginal for copying Zootopia (which it already has been, but in this case it would just get worse), but it would also defeat the purpose of both movies combined. Everyone is unique in their own ways and shouldn't have to uphold society stereotypes and standards that were forced onto them unreasonably.
Calling the elephant “Jumbo” is still witty. Jumbo was the name of a famously large African elephant, likely where dumbos name originated. I believe the elephant died in a rail accident as he was part of a travelling circus at the time

What I wished for the singers: Johnny: Stays the same Rosita: Wanting to start a career as a singer, but stuggles to decide if her dreams or her family is more important and more joyful to pursue Mike: Be more daunting and takes it a bit more serious Mena: Have her wanting to do her passion, but her family is more so not sure about it because of some sort of tragedy she had as a kid Ash: Stay the same, but has more depth and more development Gunter: Wanting to have everyone else to have some happiness that he didn't get to have as a kid This is not amazing, but is honestly better than Illumination's take on these.
I do just want to point out that at 14:20 Dazz is saying all of the animal pairs are random and lazy, but at the very least there IS a Tortoise and a Hare which he missed.
the point of the crash in Johnny's scene was that his hurrying to the theatre is what caused the collision in the first place, the animals in question weren't a gag it was just a random Bull and Baboon.
Honestly, the first Despicable Me and Sing are the only good illumination movies. While Despicable Me is good for how good the formula worked before they totally murdered it with the sequels, I think Sing is good because you can tell there is a form of heart in the movie. The songs with the sets fit beautifully, the opening scene is honestly one of my favorites. Some of the cuts they do with Buster I love, and that half camera shot with Buster and his friend on the phone is great as well. The story with Johnny, is my favorite part of it, which Buster's being a close second. You can tell the movie had a form of heart, but it doesn't exactly show it due to the jokes, some bad scenes, and things that just are weird or don't make sense. Overall, it's a good movie, but not a good movie. Like if it was rated, good movie wise, for me it'd be around a 7 out of 10 good movie, purely because it's a nice movie to watch from time to time.
okay with the starting thing, the gorillas could have driven past the mouse, who walks past the club, then something happens leading to the pig, then the pig father drives past the elephant
The one thing I really liked about Sing was that the world isn't at all adjusted for the different sized animals. For the most part at least. The elephants squeeze through doors, the giraffe has to duck his head to get through a doorway in the beginning, Moon and the mouse have to climb a lot to get to eye level. It's really subtle and I've always liked watching how they moved through a world set with a general size in mind, rather than how zootopia had a lotta places completely customized to the animals of specific sizes.
I don't know if anyone said anthing about this yet but at 14:06 there is a link between at least one pair of animals. The first booth has a rabbit and a tortoise. I'm pretty sure this is a refrence to the tortoise and the hare. I know that it was easy to miss but I wanted to point it out because when I first watched the movie I thought that it was a fun little refrence to the classic childrens story, and to everyone reading this I hope you all have a nice day :)
Sing hit home for me, especially with Johnny because the period it came out and I watched it is when my dad was deployed. So I've kinda just had biased nostalgia to it, and it makes me happy fellow comment section dwellers also enjoyed the movie.

sing has great placements for the animals. the mouse is a trickster, yet so small you can barely catch him as portrayed in this movie. the elephant is very wise and in line, but can't seem to find one place where they won't rock everybody's boat spilling water. the koala is sharply eyed, and like the elephant, very in line and organized but constantly placing others in that one single line that he wants them to be

I actually thought Angry Birds is a bad adaptation of the game that I used to play as a kid. When I actually watched it, I find it enjoyable but what I learned is that anger does not solve everything. That's relatable for me considering the fact that I have stress and anger issues and I think that kind of lesson really helped me a lot.
In this movie, the fact that they are animals has nothing to do with the story You could have all the characters be humans and nothing would be different

At 14:24, there's actually a good reference with the turtle and the hare from the fairytale, where a hare and a turtle decide to race to establish who's faster but the turtle keeps cheating, thus winning the race. It's actually quite nice as well, it cheated to win, and -if you grew up with another version- killed the hare but doing so, making his heart beat so fast from all the running that it exploded
Sing holds a significant meaning to me because it was a film I watched on the plane during an international trip and it was one of the funnest times of my life before life got harder. But I agree, its not the best and I don’t think it needs a sequel
Two things i loved from this movie, both related to the same scene: 1) i learned the song I'm still standing, which summarizes my feelings towards my abusive mother. 2) The VA of the gorilla impressed Elton John enough he handpicked him to play as him in Rocketman
I mean, Dreamworks honestly is a great company. Yeah, they have piles of trash but they have some real gems like HTTYD, Kung Fu Panda, Shrek 1, 2 and 4, Megamind, Rise of the Guardians and Prince of Egypt and at least Dreamworks tries new ideas despite how ridiculous they are and I’d rather have that than a safe piece of entertainment that does nothing new
I hope this doesn't do well, so Illumination actually fucking learns. But, of course, they will make a shit load of money, because it's basically Zootopia but it's a crappy musical.

@notcoolG Well, a lot of American movies do. While overall this is not great, it really doesn't change much about the movie. But a lot of movies over in England use the American stereotypes of the "we're all fat," "we all have neckbeards," and "we like guns" so it's a mutual thing. Besides, it's just a kids movie.
Im JUST IN LOVE with this movie, i was 13 when it was in cinema, and i loved the characters, songs and the story... The pacing was cool too, the fact that they are animals is 100% better then human Relaxing family movie, cute and i watched it like more then 10 times and yes, my parents liked it too :)

This explains so. much.
It's not just ease of animation it's also a tactic used to make ethnically ambiguous characters, it's done alot in any media for children. We're actually pushed to use animals because kids like animals and "no one is excluded". Which is ironic because now everything is animals instead of kids seeing a variety of people in their media.
Yeah, I really hated how they were just animals in a human world. In human houses, human buildings, everything was bland. Remember in Zootopia they made the world unique to fit animals lifestyles instead of just putting them in a human like environment?
If they make a sequel, either there's going to be missing details, too cartoonish models, or both.
I definitely agree. They're also gonna dumb it down again when it comes to any of the more "complex"(?) characters like Ash or the Monkey guy. They both seem to have doubts and a slight bit of trauma.

FWIW, there definitely WERE animal “relationships” in this. Lions and buffalos are hardcore enemies and buffalos regularly “wreck” lions lol. For the jail scene, crocodiles eat antelopes (not a deer), the buffalo bull was talking to a buffalo cow, and then of course the tortoise and the hare.

My take on Illumination is this: Despicable Me 1 and 2, as well as this movie (if heavily flawed) were fine in my book, the rest however were either mediocre (Pets 2, Lorax) or pretty bad (Minions, pretty much every other movie from them)

I actually really like Sing. I thought, while the obvious Illumination problems are there, the actual movie was pretty cool, had a nice message, and I really liked most of the characters.
ikr??? It's a down-to-Earth, realistic setting with nice people and institutional/social problems, I think the movie fucking slaps. I watched it at the cinema when it came out, cried 6 times during it. Then rewatched it a few years later, cried just as many times. Who the fuck CARES if the characters are non-human animals?? They did a fantastic job with their designs and I think that each character's story is very charming.
Kinda makes you wonder if there's animal versions of all the artists whose songs they use. Like an animal Nikki Minaj or Elton John. And since they have "hallelujah" is there animal religion? What animal is Jesus?

Compared to a lot of their other crap, this is actually not a bad movie by Illumination's standards.
I know they missed a lot of hits with jokes and opportunities to use the animals' distinct traits. But just because you have an elephant doesn't mean it has to be loud. I actually think a shy elephant is a good subversion of expectation. It would be just like Zootopia if it made use of all the stereotypical animal traits that we seem to expect from anthro animals. And not only would it get branded as unoriginal for copying Zootopia (which it already has been, but in this case it would just get worse), but it would also defeat the purpose of both movies combined. Everyone is unique in their own ways and shouldn't have to uphold society stereotypes and standards that were forced onto them unreasonably.
The sequel will probably be about a rival theatre that takes all the spotlight, but is ultimately overshadowed by the main cast.

Calling the elephant “Jumbo” is still witty. Jumbo was the name of a famously large African elephant, likely where dumbos name originated. I believe the elephant died in a rail accident as he was part of a travelling circus at the time

Imagine having a toddler with Rett Syndrome and difficulties eating and doing basic things. You become a straight up chameleon depending on the perceived need to get shit done.
What I wished for the singers:
Johnny: Stays the same
Rosita: Wanting to start a career as a singer, but stuggles to decide if her dreams or her family is more important and more joyful to pursue
Mike: Be more daunting and takes it a bit more serious
Mena: Have her wanting to do her passion, but her family is more so not sure about it because of some sort of tragedy she had as a kid
Ash: Stay the same, but has more depth and more development
Gunter: Wanting to have everyone else to have some happiness that he didn't get to have as a kid
This is not amazing, but is honestly better than Illumination's take on these.

I do just want to point out that at 14:20 Dazz is saying all of the animal pairs are random and lazy, but at the very least there IS a Tortoise and a Hare which he missed.
the point of the crash in Johnny's scene was that his hurrying to the theatre is what caused the collision in the first place, the animals in question weren't a gag it was just a random Bull and Baboon.

Honestly, the first Despicable Me and Sing are the only good illumination movies. While Despicable Me is good for how good the formula worked before they totally murdered it with the sequels, I think Sing is good because you can tell there is a form of heart in the movie. The songs with the sets fit beautifully, the opening scene is honestly one of my favorites. Some of the cuts they do with Buster I love, and that half camera shot with Buster and his friend on the phone is great as well. The story with Johnny, is my favorite part of it, which Buster's being a close second. You can tell the movie had a form of heart, but it doesn't exactly show it due to the jokes, some bad scenes, and things that just are weird or don't make sense. Overall, it's a good movie, but not a good movie. Like if it was rated, good movie wise, for me it'd be around a 7 out of 10 good movie, purely because it's a nice movie to watch from time to time.

Johnny’s arc is great, he’s my favourite character
The one thing I really liked about Sing was that the world isn't at all adjusted for the different sized animals. For the most part at least.
The elephants squeeze through doors, the giraffe has to duck his head to get through a doorway in the beginning, Moon and the mouse have to climb a lot to get to eye level.
It's really subtle and I've always liked watching how they moved through a world set with a general size in mind, rather than how zootopia had a lotta places completely customized to the animals of specific sizes.

I don't know if anyone said anthing about this yet but at 14:06 there is a link between at least one pair of animals. The first booth has a rabbit and a tortoise. I'm pretty sure this is a refrence to the tortoise and the hare. sing has great placements for the animals. the mouse is a trickster, yet so small you can barely catch him as portrayed in this movie. the elephant is very wise and in line, but can't seem to find one place where they won't rock everybody's boat spilling water. the koala is sharply eyed, and like the elephant, very in line and organized but constantly placing others in that one single line that he wants them to be

I actually thought Angry Birds is a bad adaptation of the game that I used to play as a kid. When I actually watched it, I find it enjoyable but what I learned is that anger does not solve everything. That's relatable for me considering the fact that I have stress and anger issues and I think that kind of lesson really helped me a lot.

At 14:24, there's actually a good reference with the turtle and the hare from the fairytale, where a hare and a turtle decide to race to establish who's faster but the turtle keeps cheating, thus winning the race. It's actually quite nice as well, it cheated to win, and -if you grew up with another version- killed the hare but doing so, making his heart beat so fast from all the running that it exploded
Sing holds a significant meaning to me because it was a film I watched on the plane during an international trip and it was one of the funnest times of my life before life got harder. But I agree, its not the best and I don’t think it needs a sequel

1) i learned the song I'm still standing, which summarizes my feelings towards my abusive mother.
2) The VA of the gorilla impressed Elton John enough he handpicked him to play as him in Rocketman

In the film, it is revealed that the squids were all okay when they play the news scene after the flood.

@notcoolG Well, a lot of American movies do. While overall this is not great, it really doesn't change much about the movie. But a lot of movies over in England use the American stereotypes of the "we're all fat," "we all have neckbeards," and "we like guns" so it's a mutual thing. Besides, it's just a kids movie.
